I just learned Yoshihiro Takayama suffered a spinal cord injury awhile back and is paralyzed from the neck down. Don Frye's message to him was incredible:
“Takayama-san, God gave me the greatest opponent anybody could ever ask for, you. You made the greatest fight the world has ever seen. You are the reason that our fight beat the World Cup of soccer head to head on TV. You are the image of Bushido and strength and triumph. You are the first person everyone asks about when they meet me. You are the warrior we all look to be."
What an incredibly inspiring comment from him!!😢💪💪
Remember when fighters had respect
@@papercut7141 Fighters still have respect, fans... another story.
Im sorry but what? The World Cup of “soccer” has BILLIONS of views, what are you talking about lmao 😂
They weren’t EVEN CLOSE to beat them, maybe in America but worldwide? Yikes
I'm usually against US defaultism too, but in this case they're probably comparing viewers in the countries both things aired. If the fight only showed in the US, it's fair to judge viewer numbers with other US broadcasts at the time.
Fun fact: The fights leading up to this had all been really boring and slow. Both men agreed to just go all out to bring some excitement to the event. They did not disappoint.
Wow that’s interesting
And it was the greatest and manliest fight ever recorded. Legends.
@aphex500 Where does it say that?
@@VenusHeadTrap2 This was During the Dark Age of New Japan
The more fun fact. Yoshihiro got called up to fight on short notice (about 10 days). He wasn't in session/training. He still went and left nothing behind.
Him and Frye have been good friends ever since.
Mr. Frye & Takayama-san are two legendary warriors, this is already one of the most famous fights in history
Already ?
Now takayama is in a bed paralyzed
@@benjack8477 damn dude I thought you were being purely offensive, then after I checked out the fact I feel so bad for him... this is sad but gotta be a lesson all of us that we gotta fight smart with a big heart... what a waste of him being big and tall:( let us pray for Takayama.
@@plom3518 yeah it's terrible how things can change for a person we don't know how we will end up
Why you saying already like it happened recently
Manliest fight ever.
That would be Robbie vs Rory. This is close though.
@@oceandrop7666 cant compare Rob V Rory good fight too.... but the first 2 rounds were duds until half of the 3rd even people were booing. This fight on the other hand had action the whole way.
@@oceandrop7666 Incorrect on every level
Well don Frye is a man's man
@THERE WAS NO CHECK!!! for the criteria they were duds
for technique obvs not
“Takayama-san. God gave me the greatest opponent anybody could ever ask for. You made the greatest fight the world has ever seen. You are the reason that our fight beat the world cup of soccer head to head on TV. You are the image of Bushido, and strength, and triumph. You are the first person anyone asks about when they meet me. You are the warrior we all want to be. Takayama-san. If you are done with this life, and this adventure, and wish to move on - good luck. We are not ready to lose you and let you go, therefore we will always remember you. But if you must go, sir, God speed.” - Don Frye said to takayama when visiting him in the hospital.
Amen brother!✌️💛🤘
@Lt. Rammshteein It sounds like he made it up lmao
@Lt. Rammshteein nope, Don really said all that. You can look it up
Did he die ?
@@DrSpaceman69 no he didn't you melon
What a show of sportsmanship.
This is the DEFINITIVE "I'm not backing down" fight!
Greatest MMA bout in history
Shut up
Incorrect
@@scotttowers1759No. Absolutely correct.
I Love how they respect each other as fighters when the fight was over
The best part is they both showed sportsmanship at the end.
🙏🙏🙏🙏🍷🍷🍾🍾
Their respectful behavior made THE Perfect finale.
Back in the days when competitors had true respect for each other, hell, even enemies had respect for each other
Real men block with their face. The mustache was the deciding factor in this fight.
Cheated. Had extra mouth guard
LMFAO look at Wanderlei in the back at 0:19 🤣. You know you have a wild one in your hands when one of the craziest fighters is looking with his mouth open.
He's the bald guy
@@catsndogs98 I know
@@eifelitorn😂😂
Wandy was like "man, I wanna be like this when I grow up"
LMAO
I love knowing, every time I see something commenting on this fight, that it's somebody's first time being exposed to this fight. It puts a smile on my face, imagining their jaws dropping.
Me today! Unbelievable!!
Happened to me when I saw it today
fuckin me today, holy shit wtf
I’m wigging balls about it. My son’s been into fighting for years but I’ve never seen anything like this.
Most brutal frontal fight that I have ever seen. Respect to both warriors!
One of the greatest ever mma fights.
Pride was so good.
Not always great fights, but at least a few class fights per event 👍🏻
My fav ever!
Good pay for the fighters... Unlike UFC
So basically every card ever?
@@scotttowers1759 Doilum
And the fans were actually chill. Nothing but respect for every fighter's archievements. Unlike the UFC rivalries today.
20 years ago today?! Wow!!!!
full fight is basically a highlight video
PRIDE had this vibe. Never forgotten...
More or less Striking really does make a difference in watching an MMA fight. Man Don Frye was one tough dude.
'Man Don Frye IS one tough dude. There i fixed it for you.
@@formersomethingsomething3273 I meant the same thing despite using different wording you don't have to correct me.
TOUGH..
unfortunately, after this fight. frye suffered lots of medical issues.
@@brandoncook6190 Your wording implies he's passed on.
Crazy stuff. Pride was awesome.
Best fight of all time
You haven't watched many fights I assume.
*one of them
For those who don't know the meaning of his last name. Takayama 高山 means high mountain.
Best stand and bang fight ever
Sanchez vs meledez ?
Don Frye is such a stud
Legendary.
I remember this was one of the first mma fights I seen back when you had to go somewhere like the library or at school to get on the internet.
We still had dial up internet back then. A 5min decent quality clip would take almost an hour to download
Japan is fucking wild
The only fight where the audience was at risk of second hand CTE
Don Frye is a legend one of my all time favorites
Even the women in attendance grew balls after witnessing this fight
Lol
Unfortunately, nowadays, they actually have balls.
They all got pregnant* 😂
They sure did
懐かしいなあ。
今や格闘技はPPVやらスマホで見れるしそれはそれで良いんだけど、この当時は誰か友達の部屋に集まってみんなでワイワイ見たりしたもんです。
I had to be a freshman in high school I was scrolling through the channels & seen these two literally holding each other giving each other CTE..I was on the wrestling mat the next year & been in love with mma every since
looking back from now, this fight looks like its taken from a comedy/action movie. it's unreal that its real.
After the first exchange, I knew I found a sport that I loved
both are fearless and no hesitation just going straight beat up of each other both was enjoy it same time both had respect for each other this true sport-membership.
This fight never gets old...Two Warriors with respect for each other....hard to beat something like this
They both fire hailmarys each other like life depends on it.
From my view, I thought it was WWE for a second, this is incredible
Wow...THAT was a real wild west Shoot-Out !!!!
Don patted "taka" on the chest afterwards. Wow! he triunes it On and quickly as turns it off!!
Respect, then, now and ever!
It’s sad you won’t EVER see shit like this again. I miss old MMA where it true style clashes from different disciplines. Now the discipline is just MMA.
Still love the sport but man do I miss these days.
GOAT Fight 🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐
Iconic fight! Ultimate respect from both warriors who left it all on the canvas 🙌
The strength, the endurance, the manliness, the sportsmanship. Beautiful.
No one will ever see a fight like that one !!!👏👏👏
Frye won in 6:10 of round #1. Takayama looked like he'd been in a car accident! Both men exhibited outstanding sportsmanship.
本当、高山さんは凄いの一言。見た目と違い紳士だし。
不幸な事故で大変な思いをしてるが良くなって欲しい。
プロレス好きではないが高山さん推し
One of the all-time matches. Honestly, how can you take that many bombs from Don Frye and still stay standing?
DAMN !!! They were not only punching kicking and wrestling each other ,,,,, They were in fact beating up each other horribly. I have not seen any MMA match like this. :}}}}
This is exceptionel,the beginning
I wish I could see this for the first time again… 😩
Still the greatest fight of all time.
There was more action and guts and fury and punches thrown and ferocity in that 5 minutes than the last 10 ufc fights I’ve seen. Absolute fckn warriors.
Both are true warriors.
One of the best, if not the best fight I seen in my life❤
Two actual men right here.
두 남자의 뜨거운 투혼.. 20여년이 지나도 결코 잊을 수 없는 명승부였다.
Great fight great sportsmanship
What a great fight and what good sportsmanship!
This is pride
Real pride. Not the other "pride".
@@g.w.7893 Nope, it's Pride
Awesome fight

Two of the toughest men ever to enter a ring.
When Don spat his mouth guard out it just went to show, this is a passion they both shared.
This has to be one of the greatest fights ever.
100% attack 0% deffence
That was f*cking AMAZING!!
One of the most iconic fights

Cut straight from the warrior cloth
I still have have this recorded on vhs from when it came out
One of the best fights of all time!!!!!!
If anyone wanted to know what a real man looks like, there’s two of them on your screen right now.
Don Frye is a monster... 🥊
Pride never die
The fight IQ and the gameplan are so good 👌
Don Frye's game plan was always to fight and win. Rounds, points and "fight IQ" has created some boring fights.
@@moto-fl3rd Works for boxing, but in MMA sucks
@@sergiowinter5383 rounds and points have made for some boring boxing matches too. They used to do 15 rounds until they realized people were getting bored. They can't fight that long so they have 5 feel them out rounds and 5 or so rounds of actual boxing.
@@moto-fl3rd Strategy in boxing is interesting: attack, counter, movement, stamina, the boxer needs to consider all of these, it's chess with punches. In MMA both fighters are often rolling on the ground all the time, is this a fight or gay porn?
@@sergiowinter5383 MMA is chess, many more options to win. Boxing is checkers. Only jab, hook and upper cut allowed in boxing. 99% of all real fights end up on the ground. MMA will only seem gay to those inclined.
One of the best fights of all time.
Takayama displayed courage beyond courage. He was outmatched by Frye and yet he gave all he had without anything held in reserve. Why? For the honour of Japan. The man is a warrior and hopefully revered as a national hero. Takayama may have lost the fight, but with all respect to Frye, Takayama was the hero, the hero of his people. Bless Takayama!
This is will forever be the standard for what an MMA “war” is
Those are true athletes
This is what testosteron looks like
Great head movement 👍🏻
I mean, Don Frye looks fucking indestructable in this fight, he's got blood on his face sure, but there seems to be zero damage. It's like punching a damn wall.
We need Don Frye circa 2000 to come to the future and portray Omni-man in live action.
two warriors that unconsciously agreed to destroy and to be destroyed. iconic bout
You'll never see that again, too. Real warrior's
Not exactly the most technical but like BEST FIGHT EVER
Some say that they're still in the clinch punching each other to this very day.
Uma luta lendária que atravessa gerações!
What the actual Frick. That was insane
The most epic round ever
This is how our fathers went to school.
