Right?!? I’m so excited for that. I truly think this is the ground work for logic and final cut to come to the iPad! That would mean goodbye to my MacBook Pro. And I also enjoy your iPad videos! I have your latest one saved and ready to watch when I get home.
@@ChrisLawley I think that the philosophy of this is that apple is a profitable company (like every other company) . They must sell more products not less! And any move must not cross that line. Unless there is a worldwide or still-profitable change to the iPad, they won't do that.
Just for M1 users. I don't buy the idea that 12x, 12z, and a14 can't do it. Samsung dex works well on snapdragon chips that are not at the level of the ipad chips I mentioned. We don't need 8 apps at the same time, 3 or 4 is enough. Everyone without an M1 has been abandonen in this regard.
Totally agreed. Has nothing to do with ram or processor availability. It's a reason to 'justify' the M1 in the iPad Pro and artificially segment out features to upsell you - they haven't justified it otherwise.
Totally agree. I don’t even have a monitor I could of use, but I could get one kinda cheap. Now to use that feature I’d have to get a monitor and I totally new iPad, when the one I have now works perfectly.. I can’t justify that. Why not enable that feature but limit the number of apps that can be on the left side.. I know I’m in the wrong place to say this but things like this are the reason I typically don’t use apple products.. I’m really kicking myself for even getting the iPad.. if I could go back I wouldn’t of purchased it.
Yeah well remember how it feels now that it has happened to you? Because Apple had been completely shtty to us for over a decade, from Power PC to the OS releases they cut off millions of users who have perfectly functional laptops and phones. Apple makes amazing devices, Apple is a terrible company
I have an iPad Air 4th Gen and i really dont think this chip cant handle the Monitor thing or the window stuff, thats just ridiculous, normally i think Apple makes some choices based on keeping the normal performance of their stuff, but with this, they are really pushing on making you buy a new one, i really dont like this decision. And you as a super fan just excuse them… i seriously think this iPad has enough power to do that, not any RAM limitations.
Apple is squeezing the pigs until they say "oink." But this is par for Apple. I mean, if an old 400 MHz iBook can handle the dock's "suck" effect, I think any iPad (any) can handle drawing a few thumbnails at the side of the screen. The best thing to do is simply not give these jokers any of our money until the rescind such dishonest and arbitrary policies.
Agreed! The other iPads could handle every single one of the new features and even if they didn’t want to “stress” the chips could have limited the the number of apps in stage manager. This update blows to anyone without an M1 iPad which had only been out for about a year..
@@greg5892 I believe Apple said you need an M1 chip to use Stage Manager. That would suggest that this is a speed issue, not a memory issue. But given Apple's disingenuous (even predatory) marketing practices in this regard, who knows?
Hi, I'm ADHD and to me Freeform was the one most exciting announcement. It's exactly the kind of tool that I'd long imagined and failed to find, like this is precisely what I need my digital note-taking/brainstorming/drafting app to be because of how my mind works when it's planning something - my thinking becomes pretty complex.
It makes me sad that my 2018 iPad Pro 12.9 wont have these new features. Albeit, universal control has been a game changer for me in tandem with my MacBook Pro M1 Pro 14”. I low key promised myself, that I wasn’t going to keep upgrading to the latest apple products. Current setup includes: MBP 14”, iPhone 13 Pro Max, Apple Watch series 5 SS, and iPad Mini 6. I think I’m covered, lol. Still gonna have FOMO without the stage manager, etc. 😕
Agreed . I got my 2018 iPad Pro in Nov 2019 (no clear sign of next pro model at the time) so I won’t quite give it to Apple that they ‘listened’ to their users as our models are still not considered ‘old’ especially since many consumers end up using their iPads for easily 5-8 years.. Technically this would mean Apple was unable to give full updates to models that are < 3 years old. Would really wish to see Apple providing a concerted effort to still reasonably new model years. The 2021 M1 model still has 80-90% of the functionality to the 3rd and 4th gen models so for most of us simply isn’t likely an upgrade for another 2-3 years. They are eating into their own value-proposition here by excluding us from the full updates..
@@teryyy5052 I have the 2020 iPad Pro it’s a device that can easily handle that feature I would think and is not old at all even the battery life ain’t too bad after almost 2 years of usage
Ok its great that they are trying to focus on the pro with the M1 but what about the people that shelled out 1000’s on iPad Pros, MKs etc? iPadOS 16 literally doesn’t give any previously released iPads ANY features. I’m fine not getting Stage Manager on my 2020 iPad Pro, but I literally only got a weather app. A WEATHER APP THAT I NEVER CARED FOR. Edit - meant Stage manager, not center stage.
Doesn't all iPads with ipados16 get the new APIs for desktop class apps and for example the the better file manager? Also, what I like is that you can now lock the "hide folder" in photos with a passwort so none can look inside.
Although not really a surprising move. I have the 3rd gen 12.9 and it is an awesome machine - pound-for-pound the best iPad ever made IMO. To match its configuration with M1 I'd need to spend £1649.00 in the UK. How else will Apple convince us to move to M1 iPads unless they throttle the software? It will also likely kill the 3rd/4th gen 2nd-hand market.
I get it why stage center is a M1 exclusive, but it is a shame Apple could figure out a variant for the external screen support. Having full screen or split screen available also on the secondary monitor (not the floating mode) would have been useful
I think it is the RAM, the 4GB base 2018 iPad Pro simply could not run as well with four apps in the foreground and maybe 8 if connected to an external display. Moreso if those apps used RAM intensively like Procreate. Even Apple suggests that 8GB is the bare minimum as they have added memory swap to boost that. I am sure that it could have Stage Manager running in its basic form, but not the way Apple has leveraged it or what they probably hope to achieve with updates. So, no, I feel that the 2018 iPad Pro 4GB version would not work well and as MS has done, with W11, sometimes you just have to cut-off legacy support so that the newer tech is not disadvantaged by having its arms tied by older more obsolete devices (M1 is the new standard and older A devices should now be seen as a sub-set).
@@_Digitalguy You are of course right, a stripped down version of Stage Manager is possible, but that is def not Apple's MO. It is clear that lower RAM will not perform as well as 8GB plus. The 2018 iPad on 4GB will be limited badly in apps like Procreate that need to use nearly 3GB of that for an average project, leaving little active RAM for the other apps multi-tasking. Swap is fine for inactive apps but not for those in the foreground. For this to function as well as Apple intended 16GB is the best choice and 8GB with swap and restrictions on RAM in some apps is doable.
I really like all the new features which apple annouced, especially the stage manager and external display support. These are the main features which I bought my iPad originally for because i hoped they'd come to iPadOS in 2020 already. But now my 11" iPad Pro 2019 is obsolete...
I believed most A12X or Z processor and 6GB are powerful enough for external support and stage centre. Like Procreate limit the layers. Older processor can open less apps. However, Apple decided to kill those overpowered A machines
Stage Manager is more for pro users so the RAM usage is going to be high, the 16GB version being the best option for max utility and performance. Apple has added swap memory as 8GB iPad Pros may run out, which should make sure that they do not bottleneck too badly, but the 4GB/6GB versions would likely be too little especially as they cannot swap memory as efficiently as the M1. The point of Stage Manager is multi-tasking, up to 8 apps in the foreground so this will easily max out memory if these apps are pro. I mean running Procreate on a 2018 4GB iPad would mean maybe a couple of layers before it ran out of memory which means you would have to switch to normal mode making Stage Manager pointless for intensive multi-tasking.
I agree with you, andyH is just trying to justify it..with current multitasking with the iPad you can already have many apps running at once along with a PiP video going with the current RAM, so all of a sudden because stage manager suddenly the especially 2020 iPad Pro cannot use stage manager!?! Get out of here, I love Apple and I have many products but this iPad OS announcement was a blow to anyone without an M1 iPad that has been out for about a year..plain and simple
@@cedricthompson140 I am not being an Apple apologist, I just understand that for prosumers of an iPad Pro, which those that hate on Apple keep saying is what the M1 iPads are, then those users may need 5GB of RAM for Procreate alone, so another 7 apps if they include say LumaFusion and Excel, will mean constant crashing or heavy restrictions per app on the older versions. Yes, if all you do is run YT and Twitter with Safari then 4GB will be fine, but Apple cannot assume this is the 100% user case especially as YT comments always say they use the pro for pro work.
@@cedricthompson140 The current “multitasking” is not actually multitasking, with the exception of split-screen view. Background apps in iOS are not held in active memory for very long when they’re running in the background. This is one of the things that folks have been complaining about in the first place.
Computer can “multi-tasking” and support external monitor ages ago. Any Mac with 4GB of ram could do it smoothly. Why not iPad? Memory intensive theory is purely a lie to force people buy M1 iPads. Why can’t an 6GB iPad support a full size external 1080p monitor and still only support mirroring😂😂
I'm glad to see Apple finally bring features that utilizes the power of the M1 chip. But it kind of sucks how it came too little to late for me. I thought of buying an M1 iPad Pro last year to be my main computer, but after iPadOS 15 being somewhat underwhelming, I ended up getting the M1 MacBook Air instead. While iPadOS 16 has brought significant improvements to where an M1 iPad can actually be my main computer, the purchase of the MacBook Air has already been made. So I don't intend to buy a new iPad anytime soon unfortunately, regardless of how much Apple improves the iPad at this point which is a shame. I really wanted to use an iPad solely, but Apple was just too slow with the changes
It took a little longer to make it work (Stage Manager) and especially as the M1 was new on an iPad there was enough for them to have to work out without complicating it with such a big upgrade. I understood that and kept my M1 iPad as I knew that Apple's roadmap was to make the M1 iPads mini-MacBooks but running iPadOS. The MB Air is great so win-win really!
I'm going the other way, I think the inclusion of "stage manager" only on the ipad is underwhelming. Selling my M1 iPad Pro for a baseline M2 Macbook Air.
As a 2020 iPad Pro user, I’m devastated. Bought that iPad truly believing that it will have support for several years, but now I find out that it won’t have the newest features.
The M1 iPads are a forked off iPad so no, you are not getting stuff aimed at the M1, which eevryone on YT asked for last year, saying all that power but no features, well Apple has done it. The iPad 2020 will probably be supported until 2026/7 so not sure why you think it will not be supported? It is just not M1, if you want M1 features you obviously need an M1 device. I do hope Apple does a Stage Manager Lite advising that it will be nowhere as near good as the M1 version but will add features. It is just not possible for your 2020 iPad Pro to function as well as the M1 iPads will do in Stage Manager (RAM mainly).
@@andyH_England that's a ridiculous statement, you're telling me that the 2020 iPad Pro is no longer considered "pro" enough to do the m1 stuff because of 2 extra gigs of ram? its literally been 2 years and its not getting any pro features besides the weather app, I can understand iPads older than 2018 they had a good 3-5 year cycle but the shelf life of the 2 year iPad is just disappointing because its like they just had a "filler" year. 2018, then sell the same thing plus an extra camera. when we say we don't think it'll be supported, we mean pro features, because if we wanted basic features we would've bough an iPad mini or iPad regular, we buy the pro to do the pro stuff, and its just a shame apple is gate keeping it just for the m1. so you're telling me I have to upgrade every year in order to get software support that should've been there from the beginning ? they want us to buy laptops instead then fine, but then what's the point of an iPad = its my favourite device but apple is making it obvious they don't care about iPad users because this is the bare minimum of the power, say I buy the m1 and sell my 2020, well guess what next year the m2 iPad will be out and then maybe it only has features the m1 doesn't have. if I'm spending $1-2k per year on a device, I want to be able to use it for at least 2+ years without having to buy another $1-2k device just because some software doesn't work since its gate kept. its just really disheartening because we waited so long for more iPad support and regardless of m1 or not, its a terrible update, we already have multiple windows. do you even own an iPad m1 or are you speaking on behalf of a community you're not even a part of? the iPad at this point is just a glorified media consumption device. nothing more nothing less, and its exhausting waiting for apple to give more features only to give the bare minimum, my iOS 16 update gives me the weather app and thats about it. $1500 for my 11 inch iPad Pro and thats as pro as it gets.
Been following you for really long. One of the reasons why made my ipad purchase. Love this outdoor format. You look so much slimmer here. Hope you're doing fine. Like that you didn't totally remove the background noise after you sat down. Made it a lot more real & natural.
I just loaded the beta on my iPad Pro 2020 which I bought late in 2020 not long before the 2021 M1 IPad Pro launched. I thought to myself: If you buy a 1.000€ apple product now, you will absolutely get the latest updated for the next 5-6 years no problem. Now I’ve been waiting for an entire year to finally get external monitor support and now it is finally time. The 2022 iPadOS 16 update I’ve been longing for. But oh surprise! The new features absolutely don’t work on my iPad. Why? Because I bought it one year too early and I won’t get the new features🤩 I like apple but as far as I know my iPad Pro is still almost the most recent iPad Pro and also still a pro. My iPad Pro still has enough ram. And if it doesn’t run smooth just limit it to less apps. My 2012 gaming pc without a graphics card and 4gb of ddr3 ran can run multiple programs side by side no problem. Why can’t my iPad Pro 2020? It makes me mad and definitely sad aswel. I can’t just get a new iPad a year after I bought mine for so much €€€€. I was about to order the Magic Keyboard case from apple just to make my iPad finally my main laptop but nope. Definitely thinking about giving my iPad away and upgrading to an Laptop again. The new update is exciting for everyone that bought the M1 iPad but I didn’t and a lot of others didn’t aswell because apple stands for continuing updates for many years and now I feel betrayed.
I think Apple are just doing what they said they would do, branching off with the M-chip iPads, making them more feature-rich without having the expense and time-consuming problem of making Stage Manager work on other devices. I have a 2018 iPad Pro and it is disappointing, but I get it. If Apple is going to do what techies on YT channels have been asking them, that is use that M1 power, then they have to concentrate on that rather than hamstring a fix for lower-RAM non-M1 iPads.
@@_Digitalguy They did imply it by saying that the M-chips would get more joint collaboration. This is obvious in retrospect as they are like brothers and sisters and is relatively easy for Apple to code for both together.
@@andyH_England I agree. In name, my iPad is a Pro, but I’m happy for there to be two tiers of Pros as it were. I don’t want my 2018 Pro to be slowed down with software not really designed for it. I kind of see it as iPads that can heavily multitask like the M1 iPads and ones that can’t, but I think Apple could have made some tweaks to iPadOS for the non-M1s. In many ways I prefer how my iPad is a device where I can focus on tasks without toolbars, files on the desktop, overlapping windows. Therefore I’d have appreciated some improvements to features like Focus, where the non-M1 iPads can become very streamlined devices
Wish they would find a way for iPad Air 4 customers have a version of Stage Manager. Another feel bad moment. First it was not getting centrestage, then it was M1 and now SM. The device isn’t even that old.
I bought the 11" M1 iPad Pro because of all the hype surrounding iPadOS 15. When that came out, I felt like a fool. Now, with the announcement of iPadOS 16, I'm beginning to feel more confident. The big thing for me is the fact that Apple are finally bringing changes that don't apply to all iPads. Looking forward to the public beta so I can try it out.
When we going to get the ability to format external ssd drives…..I spend approx 6 months a year travelling with my job and photographing Asia…this is a big one for me….
I replaced my personal windows laptop with an ipad pro 12.9 2020 and slowly found it‘s limitations: no monitor support, lightroom and photoshop apps lacking features which were already available on PC, crappy files app etc…slowly Adobe caught up and now after the latest update i don‘t need Affinity anymore nor am i switching to Capture One (beta tester here) but the iPadOS limitations were still there. Ipad OS 16 solved most of these..bummer that my 2020 ipad pro won‘t get these features i want but i was kinda planning to either upgrade my iPad to the M2 version when it comes out or switch to a macbook air. Now i‘m convinced: sticking with the iPad and getting the M2 when it‘s out, probably in autumn BUT, would i be better off with an 11“ now that i can properly connect a monitor to it, for an even more portable device, provided the 11“ will get the same OLED display as the 12.9 or would would i feel cramped by the smaller screen? A friend has the current Air and it seems like such a light tossable device…like a bigger phone…well guess i‘ll check his M1 Air when iPadOS 16 comes out…
They could at least make an extended display mode for non M1 iPad. There's no need for windowed mode with 8 apps open simultaneously anyway. Since you could already go full screen on stage manager.
Happened with W11, MS has to make a cut off to get rid of the complications of legacy support. Apple has done the same. It is technology and the A-chips run on an inferior architecture so will not get the benefits of the M1 iPads that are using basically a desktop SoC. I have a 2018 iPad Pro and it is sad but I get it.
After years waiting for a good operating systems for iPad, now I feel I must be sure : iPad Pro is the best tablet you can own and the worst computer you can buy.
I'm just so happy that they've given us for monitor support. I have a 12.9 inch iPad 2018 model and an 11 inch 2021 pro model with 16 gig of ram, so I think I’m pretty much covered. Yes I agree with some of the comments they could’ve given us for screen support for the older 12.9, but they didn’t and we have to get on with it. I’m just so excited to see how this works. Great video Chris and your lucky sod to be there.
Meanwhile my 2020 non m1 iPad Pro is crying right now cos its being neglected. It still runs butter smooth and everything. Just don’t understand why it cant get the full features
The only thing that scares me about “desktop class apps” is that Apple will hold the desktop app we are all waiting for, final cut and drop it on the M2 iPad in in the fall
It is not "desktop-class apps" per se, it is giving the API so that iPad apps can utilise desktop versions of that apps features easier. So it will remain at heart a downscaled iPadOS app but with a bit more functionality, though I expect the full version will offer more still.
Chris - read the comments to the MacRumors article that points out that the best features are limited to the M1 chip - there are many angry people - not just me - that we are cut out. I don’t think Apple cares.
The weather app is just a silly thing tech RUclipsrs were on about. Glad to hear from someone who actually uses an iPad regularly how silly it is, too.
I’ve been an avid user of the iPad Pro 11” 2020 with the Smart Folio Keyboard. Using Cmd Tab to switch apps… Until I tried and purchased the MacBook Air M1 for work because I was frustrated by limitations of the Files app. Very happy to work with the MacBook Air M1 and consume content and knowledge with the iPad Pro 11”. Not to mention that the stage Manager needs to be used with a 12.9” ipad because it’d be too small otherwise. And still use the same Cmd Tab afterwards on both devices!!! With the option to have 2 different desktops feature on the MacBook Air M1!
Great informative video, I am excited for all the changes as a 12.9 M1 iPad Pro user. Keep up the great work! I am looking forward to your full iOS 16 review. My 1st Generation iPad Pro still works and looks like new except for the battery life. I love the design and quality of all Apple products.
When apple shows central stage and desk type apps I decided two buy new iPad Pro with m1 chip after iOS 16 release. It’s really great update for iPadOS and really excited to try it. Waiting for new video from you, Cristopher, so see all new features from new release. How do you thing does it means that next generation of iPad Pro will more expensive and Apple will narrow difference between Mac and iPad? And when we get calculator app on ipad?😅
I’m in the disappointed 2018 iPad Pro ‘camp’ this time around with not getting full features of iPadOS 16. Although I am upgrading this year anyway. My issue is one of upgrading my 2013 MacBook Air OR getting the next iPad Pro.
@7:30 I really and very vehemently disagree with you there. They do want you to buy new gear so to say they don’t is just naive Chris. Like others have said, sometimes you tech folks struggle to be negative about Apple. Appreciate the video and info and love the outdoors filming 🙂👍🏻 It’s gonna be a great tech year.
Agreed that it's a RAM issue more than anything else with regard to the M1-only features. There's a big difference between 4 or even 6GB of RAM compared to the base 8Gb in the M1 Air and Pros. Man, I remember getting an extra ram chip for a Core2Duo MBP and what a difference it made! A line has to be drawn somewhere and I think this is a reasonable one. I'm looking at getting a refurbished 2020 iPad Pro for one of my parents to replace their ageing MBP as these will have better longevity with 6GB RAM, but I don't expect them to have the full features of the M1 models.
Christopher thanks for doing a non-standard video on the features. For me the external monitor support is what I have been waiting for most. Centre stage also a superb addition. Cant wait for iOS 16
I’m sad ! I bought an iPad 8 gen to work as a student and I was like « oh it will be very cool and confortable to have the possibility to work on a second screen with the new stage manager for iPad » and finally it’s only for M1 iPad :-(
I am excited to see your next workflow when iPad OS 16 will be released. I am a fan of your channel because I really want to use just an iPad as my main computer
iPadOS 16 is great. My only Complaint regarding iPad apps is Instagram that still is an iPhone app. They could easily make an apps like Facebook for iPad. Do you agree? Overall love your videos and as an iPad Pro only User I find your content useful for my daily life!
I just need the Adobe Creative Suite to catch up with the iPad and I will be giving up my desktop iMac forever. I CANNOT WAIT for my iPad to be my main work machine!
Real question: why use an iPad at all when the MacBook Air is so much more versatile? Plus you get real apps, amazing screen, great speakers, a better keyboard/trackpad experience, ect. I've had many iPads over the years, but since the M1 Air released, I've never had the want to move back to an iPad. Looking for other opinions, use cases and thoughts as to why one would still pick an iPad in 2022?
Oh! This would be interesting to hear from others too. Mine is one of those use cases where an iPad would hands down be my first choice. I’m an artist, comic author, and art teacher, and it’s pretty hard to beat the iPad for combined portability, apps that beautifully fit my needs, and the Apple Pencil. I use a MacBook for managing device backups, for my music library, and for a handful of tasks and apps that are genuinely handy to have in my toolbox, but my primary production workflow for my big art projects all happens on an iPad, and I’m personally more efficient with this setup and enjoy the workflow way more than drawing on a laptop or desktop. I’m also not on an M1 iPad and don’t plan to upgrade just for the new Stage Manager. I see a lot of tech reviewers who have wanted more complex multitasking and external monitor support, and it’s great if this update supports their workflow, but I personally get plenty of mileage out split view, slide over, and screen mirroring as they are. For me, an iPad isn’t a broken or stunted laptop, but a unique kind of device that offers advantages others don’t for my workflow.
Because some people have the delusional idea that Apple will cannibalize their computer lineup with their tablet lineup. That’s the real answer you were looking for at any rate.
Manage your expectations people! Stage center is nice and all and it's def. better then not having it but it's still not nearly as good as a Mac so if you're a mac user wanting to have the same on the iPad Pro, don't get too excited.
Yes, Stage Manager still runs on an iPad that runs iPadOS apps, so nothing has really changed apart from better multi-tasking and external monitor support. As good as that is, it is not close to a desktopOS.
@@SalivatingSteve I think that can be an excuse. But if they wanted to, they would. Samsung does it with Dex on subpar chips. Apple just gave other users a big middle finger so they have to purchase new products. IMO
My Setup: - GE 76 Raider 2022 i9 RTX3080Ti, an ASUS ProArt Display PA329C 4K HDR Professional Monitor, WX1000XM3 Headphones; iPhone 12 mini; 12.9 inch iPad Pro A12z, MX Keys, MX Master 2S. The reason I am writing is to provide a complete context of how I work. I am Structural Engineer and can thank god afford such an extensive setup for work. The only thing that I use my iPad for is for taking notes unfortunately. At the time of buying the iPad Pro, I seriously thought that it's LiDAR scanner would come in handy, it'll soon have pro engineering and design apps like ArchiCAD, Plaxis, xCode, ANSYS, etc. because they were rumoured to be announced for the iPad OS at the time. But all these years after, still nothing. Absolutely bloody nothing. It's just an overexpensive note taking, sketching, reading tablet with nothing that can professionally be leveraged. Another gripe that I have with Apple is that in the recent years, Apple's stance of "PRO" is just for the people in Video editing, Photo editing, and related industry. Trust me it's not pro. There's not a single workable Structural Engineering or any other Core engineering Work place solutions on the Macs or the iPads. Architects use the Mac but not engineers. Macs are stupid pieces of junk, no matter how extensively you spend on them. Trust me, if you're anyone who's not working in the youtube, other social media content creator space, or movies, video or photos, neither the mac nor the iPad is made for you no matter how rich you are or however many items you can buy on company paycheck. It's just junk at the end of the day.
Thanks Chris, great video, loved the fact that you commented on the implication and hopes for this release rather than just recycled the event. Also what mic are you using - sound quality outside if really good.
Thank you! I really wanted to avoid that. I’m using the Rode Video Mic Pro+ but the quality came from the voice isolation feature in Final Cut. Without that it picked up everything.
While I would love to do that, they don’t let people walk around filming. I got to film a bit at the Steve Jobs theater yesterday but there was so many people it’s mostly unusable.
I really could not care less about a weather app. As someone who loves my iPad air, I feel its potential is really being limited by the lack of support for running desktop apps (specifically applications I use for software development). It is disappointing that they are not opening their ecosystem more for 3rd party software to be run on their devices (Docker, anyone?). You do not need a massive amount of processing power to spin up a Docker image and run it in terminal mode.
i've been wanting to buy one for years now, but the operating system holding back the hardware has been stopping me. when do you think the best time to buy one is?
I should’ve got the 16Gb ram model on my M1 iPad Pro 12.9 but at the time everyone said it was pointless, “at the time”… next one I get will be a specd out one like, & will wait for another 3 generations to come out
Now with stage manager I would like to work on my iPad, walk to my desk, plug-in the iPad and *boom* continue working with my Bluetooth devices and standard monitor….so how would you connect an iPad and Mac Mini to the same monitor (not simultaneously, of course) without unplugging the monitor cable all the time? Are you aware of a docking station with TWO Thunderbolt host connectors? Or a hub / dongle?
For starters I use LumaFusion carefully now for the exact reasons you spoke ok. I mean identical. I have cautiously re-introduced it. But my team still uses premiere and Davinci just to be safe. Do we know if external monitor support means that there will be no more need for an adapter? We have one of those monitors that draws power and signal off of USB-C and is about the same size as an iPad. It would be awesome if that just plugs in. Right now it’s a MacBook tool only.
Regarding the Mail App, when I attach a photo it gets sent "embedded" and appears within the body of the email text ... so if it has large dimensions, the person receiving the photo on their phone sees the image at an enormous size and it shrinks down the email text to a tiny size in relation to the dimensions of the image. So whenever I send a photo with an email, I have to use Safari to sign in to my email account via the browser because the browser version allows proper "attachments" instead of "embedding" the image. Am I missing something? Is there a way to attach photos to emails without embedding them ... without having to jump through a bunch of convoluted hoops of having to remove the photos from the Photos App and copy them to some other inconvenient place ?!
The updated Mail app (for all three OS) make me want to get rid of Spark... I am looking forward to Stage Manager. I got a MacBook Air M1 (thankfully for a reaaaaally good price here in Germany) a few months ago because I got rid of my Magic Keyboard case which I rarely used. With Stage Manager, I wish I kept it. But Universal Control works as good as. What's pretty great: you can use your iPad 12.9-inch as a reference monitor. That's pretty mindblowing to be honest. One less device you need to buy which is always a good thing in my book.
Apple tries to reinvent the wheel too much…windowing and external monitor support doesn’t need to be reinvented just make it work like it has worked for years.
I appreciate you pointing out your perspective because I missed some of that. But what really angered me was that 80% of us are cut off from Stage Manager and external display support. That would be okay if we had Ipad Pro 18’s but my ipad mini that you just mentioned late last year and my ipad 2020 is now obsolete for these features. The YT infuencers gloss over this and don’t share an opinion for fear of not being invited back - so we get a fanboy feedback loop to Apple that does not complain about Apple doing this to us. I notice that because people cover these products they always have the latest but the customers can’t buy a new model every year. Also why upgrade to the M1 which is over a year old now - so most of us won’t get to use stage manager until the M2 issues - I think it would be foolish to get an M1 now for this reason - not well thought out by Apple.
Im in the same bucket as you, as I have an iPad air 4 which does not have an M1 chip. Now if you think of it, this really boosts a lot of productivity, not ability. ofc its frustrating but how much will I use it, not that much as I am usually coding via vsc on the web and my iPad gets that done.
Influencers don’t give this a second thought apparently because they get the latest hardware. On the other hand, I have a 2nd gen 11” iPad Pro ( ‘20) and after watching the Stage Manager and external display demo, I feel like Apple just shot me the finger.
@@towjam2359 lmao this is literally just business at this point….ooh new features, let’s just put those on our latest versions to troll the community -apple
First I buy all my own hardware, let’s just get that out of the way. Second like I talked about it in the video it has to do with RAM limitations and disk speed. The virtual memory swap feature is required to make all of those apps run. The older iPads storage isn’t fast enough to support this in a smooth environment.
Christopher, I've been waiting for your take on these announcements. I have been dying to buy the M1 Ipad Pro, but just needed a reason to get it. Apple yesterday gave those reasons. I'm a proud owner of a new M1 Ipad Pro
I have an A12Z 12.9 iPad Pro and although I am bummed that I wont be able to use stage manager right away. I am planning on getting an updated M2 iPad Pro when they are released.
I really hope there will be an improvment in other productibity apps like microsoft and python, since the great majority of users won't ever use photoshop or video rendering.
RIP to my 2018 iPad for true external monitor support. I get it but it seriously makes ios16 for older iPads nothing. As a teacher I was hoping to use my iPad Pro 2018 more next year with true external monitor support.
I am actually excited with the potential for IOS 16 and finally be able to have the IPad Pro be able to use its full potential. Personally I believe Apple should have separate IOS for IPad, Mac Books, or IPhone's. Each of these devices need to have their own experiences with user interface. Now I am seriously looking to getting a M2 series IPad ( I need more memory ) and a M2 series iMac next year.
Hey Chris. Did you happen to have a chance to see what the experience is using universal control between a Mac and iPad both running center stage and both using external displays. Is single mouse and keyboard functional over all four screens?
As a 2018 iPad Pro user I am disappointed that stage manager is not coming to my iPad but we’re talking about Apple here, the company that is first class when it comes to software support on older devices. Features that work on seven year old iPhones that otherwise wouldn’t be the case for android devices. If Apple says that there is a hardware limitation to this feature I don’t think they’re lying about it. It’s always easy to shout corporate greed but I’ve been with Apple long enough to know that if a feature doesn’t absolutely work perfectly on all devices it’s not getting shipped to all there devices because they would rather deal with people being bothered by Apples decisions rather than reflecting poorly on the devices due to a poor software experience. Their hardware and software experience is the crux of the business. They know that people will get over decisions like this but people will seldom get over hardware issues or software issues. The last thing Apple wants right now is stage manager gate.
I’m very upset because I just bought an iPad Air 4 in December because my mini died. And now I can’t even get the next update? This is wrong. I have this thing for only less than five months and I can’t afford to buy another one. 😞
It's good that floating windows will exist, but I don't see this as any real improvement to concurrent multitasking. I've been using iPads for 10 years and always use the current Pro generation. But honestly, I think DeX on the Samsung Tabs offers a far better and true concurrent multitasking capability and I feel like Apple have just created another way of doing the same thing. I will judge it when I use it, but I don't really understand the furore.
@@arandomhumanbeing2464 Firstly you can run it off a phone, that can't be done with Stage Manager, and from what I've seen on the reviews, Such as Alex Gear and Tech, it's still better for multitasking.
Hearing about the initiatives on desktop-class focus for the iPad was suuuper important to me too. Always love hearing your thoughts on iPad!
Totally true. I was thinking about buy an ipad mini and now i have doubts
DEX only supports QHD 2560x1440 max. iPad monitors support goes 6K.
Even I think it’s ridiculous🤦🏻♂️
Agreed! The other iPads could handle every single one of the new features and even if they didn’t want to “stress” the chips could have limited the the number of apps in stage manager. This update blows to anyone without an M1 iPad which had only been out for about a year..
@@bradnelson3595 Uh, it’s not the thumbnails. Those apps are running in active memory.
Yes, for us less gifted people, seeing how you get to wherever you go with Freeform will enable us to maybe (?) understand the thinking a bit better!
The app store already had a similar app
@@teryyy5052 you summed it up perfectly. My iPad feels just as new as the M1’s. It’s a shame.

Doesn't all iPads with ipados16 get the new APIs for desktop class apps and for example the the better file manager? Also, what I like is that you can now lock the "hide folder" in photos with a passwort so none can look inside.
Agreed. Not to worried about a weather app. A bit disappointed my 3rd gen ipad pro will need to be updated to an M1 to get some of these new features
A bit, its a major disappointment
Although not really a surprising move. I have the 3rd gen 12.9 and it is an awesome machine - pound-for-pound the best iPad ever made IMO. To match its configuration with M1 I'd need to spend £1649.00 in the UK. How else will Apple convince us to move to M1 iPads unless they throttle the software? It will also likely kill the 3rd/4th gen 2nd-hand market.
Why you survived so far. Not the end of the world.
@@mikepxg6406 great point.
Real bummer.. Bought in 2020 for a fortune and already obsolete? 6GB RAM isn’t enough for StageManager?
I get it why stage center is a M1 exclusive, but it is a shame Apple could figure out a variant for the external screen support. Having full screen or split screen available also on the secondary monitor (not the floating mode) would have been useful
thats the feature thats probably thr least sence to not give to all
You get why? There is no reason other than to get people to buy M1 iPads.
I really don’t see why… commercially apart…
But now my 11" iPad Pro 2019 is obsolete...
you mean 2018 that when the first 11 inch came out
I believed most A12X or Z processor and 6GB are powerful enough for external support and stage centre.
Agree. I wonder if the M1 iPad was a year too soon or iPadOS 16 was a year too late. I am going with the latter.
It was never „either or“, it was and is always „and“.
I'm going the other way, I think the inclusion of "stage manager" only on the ipad is underwhelming. Selling my M1 iPad Pro for a baseline M2 Macbook Air.

All of these features sound amazing, can't wait for new iPad Pro! 🙌🏼

2020 iPad Pro owners got screwed over with their purchase. Already not getting features the new ones are getting.
Happened with W11, MS has to make a cut off to get rid of the complications of legacy support. Apple has done the same. It is technology and the A-chips run on an inferior architecture so will not get the benefits of the M1 iPads that are using basically a desktop SoC. Meanwhile my 2020 non m1 iPad Pro is crying right now cos its being neglected. It still runs butter smooth and everything. Just don’t understand why it cant get the full features
The only thing that scares me about “desktop class apps” is that Apple will hold the desktop app we are all waiting for, final cut and drop it on the M2 iPad in in the fall
iPadOS 16 won’t be officially out until the fall. So even if it was ready we wouldn’t get it until then at the soonest.
I can see them doing this 💯
It is not "desktop-class apps" per se, it is giving the API so that iPad apps can utilise desktop versions of that apps features easier. So it will remain at heart a downscaled iPadOS app but with a bit more functionality, though I expect the full version will offer more still.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think what he’s saying is those who don’t have an M2 iPad Pro won’t be able to use Final Cut on their older iPads? 🤔

I’m in the disappointed 2018 iPad Pro ‘camp’ this time around with not getting full features of iPadOS 16. Although I am upgrading this year anyway. My issue is one of upgrading my 2013 MacBook Air OR getting the next iPad Pro.
i'd recommend to get the M2 Macbook Air
@@markmoncera5010 yeah good advice 👍🏻 I love iPad but let’s face it that’s gonna cost £1200 to get the right spec.
You are the one I was waiting for comments. I’m also very excited the future of iPad with this new iPadOS. I’m just hoping now for a M1 iPad mini :D
Great video (again), Chris! Just keep it up!
🤗 VERY COOL 😎 CHRIS …that you were able to be there 🤗 and we look 👀 forward to the future with OS16 😍😍😍
Display scaling support is key!
My only
Complaint regarding iPad apps is Instagram that still is an iPhone app.
Tbh i only uses my ipad for Playing mobile games and watching RUclips or Netflix. Or maybe some light work like creating documents for work and stuff.
Why use iPad instead Macbook Air? OFC the versality to draw digital art.
@@marcy2693 That’s what an iPad can be used to supplement a Mac with, but never replace it.
I am not excited because the Mac apps such as Final Cut Pro and Xcode are not coming to iPad os at this stage
As good as that is, it is not close to a desktopOS.
so wait, Apple wants to say the A12Z was good enough to be put in the test kits to run macos, but can't handle stage center. interesting
It’s because those iPad Pros are limited to 4GB-6GB of RAM.
Most feature or update reveal at this year WWDC is exclusively for M and above chip only.
I’d love to see vlogs about you going to the Apple Campus!
I’m most excited for the UI upscaling!
Thanks…I enjoyed your vlog. Blessings on your day.
I have the 2020 iPad Pro, but would u urge me to go m1? Or mine is still good? The 11 inch
I should’ve got the 16Gb ram model on my M1 iPad Pro 12.9 but at the time everyone said it was pointless, “at the time”… next one I get will be a specd out one like, & will wait for another 3 generations to come out
External monitor support is only for the M1?
Im so excited. I already have the beta loaded on my 12.9 pro. Cant wait for your review.
How did you get the beta already
@@shadedsoul890 go to beta profiles dooooot coooom sorry had to spell weird because of comment blockers.
Thank goodness for jailbreaking
When do you think iPad mini 6 will get stage manager??
Now with stage manager I would like to work on my iPad, walk to my desk, plug-in the iPad and *boom* continue working with my Bluetooth devices and standard monitor….so how would you connect an iPad and Mac Mini to the same monitor (not simultaneously, of course) without unplugging the monitor cable all the time? Are you aware of a docking station with TWO Thunderbolt host connectors? Or a hub / dongle?
I was excited to hear your take on all the updates especially stage manager.
So excited to see your reaction to floating windows!!
😃😃😃
The updated Mail app (for all three OS) make me want to get rid of Spark...
I am looking forward to Stage Manager. I got a MacBook Air M1 (thankfully for a reaaaaally good price here in Germany) a few months ago because I got rid of my Magic Keyboard case which I rarely used.
With Stage Manager, I wish I kept it. But Universal Control works as good as.
What's pretty great: you can use your iPad 12.9-inch as a reference monitor. That's pretty mindblowing to be honest. One less device you need to buy which is always a good thing in my book.
Can’t believe iPad Pro 9.7 is still supported!
Do we know which year model number iPad will no long get Apple support or OS upgrades?
Apple tries to reinvent the wheel too much…windowing and external monitor support doesn’t need to be reinvented just make it work like it has worked for years.
Maybe I’m naive, but I believe „m1 only” features might land on different ipads as well since it is still queit some time buforem official release
@@bapple9173 Imagine IOS16’s best new features worked only on Iphone 13. That is what Apple did to the Ipads.
I'm excited for it too!
Hell yeah welcome to M1 gang
Why proud??
@@sahilsiddiqui5937 because it’s great 👍🏼
@@sahilsiddiqui5937 It’s great upgrade!
I have an A12Z 12.9 iPad Pro and although I am bummed that I wont be able to use stage manager right away. I am planning on getting an updated M2 iPad Pro when they are released.
sooo stage manger is only m1 exclusive !!
Damn it, im an ipad pro 2018 owner :(
I really hope there will be an improvment in other productibity apps like microsoft and python, since the great majority of users won't ever use photoshop or video rendering.
Are you using A7 IV to shoot this video ?
Do you know if you need other people to use free form? Or can you use it by yourself?
Does the iPhone have external monitor support yet? Because iPhone is fast enough for 85%+ of people.
I have an 2020 ipad pro and won't upgrade bc apple wants us to do. I'm pretty disappointed and pissed.
have you heard of sharepoint and ms teams , Microsoft has had collaboration tools for years and they have a suite of ipad apps
What is superior about Samsung Dex compared to stage manager?
@@arandomhumanbeing2464 Firstly you can run it off a phone, that can't be done with Stage Manager, and from what I've seen on the reviews, Such as Alex Gear and Tech, it's still better for multitasking.
Stage manager is only for the M1 iPads too?
Really hoping Visual Studio Code for iPad will be coming.
i wonder why no one complains that there's no way to upgrade ipad internals but there is in macbooks..
