Dude I can listen to you talk all day haha. So we’ll explained and thought-out comments about this annoyingly complex feature. Plus I agree with you on just about everything. You’ve got my subscription.
right off the bat, worth coming here. I wasn't going to enable Stage Manager--I use split, etc every day all day--but you're saying I would miss a lot. Back to watching.
Starting to like my decision to buy the 12.9 since every reviewer out there was recommending the 11. The huge screen gives so much real estate while using the stage manager with multiple apps at once. Wouldn’t feel like I would use the feature it to its max potential if I was using a smaller screen
As usual super comprehensive video! I never watch anything else in terms of iOS / iPad Os guide. Thanks Chris! Do you plan to do a follow up once Stage Manager is baked in 16.2?
It might not be perfect and i hope they will improve on things like always but i have to say stage manager makes such a positive improvement i am loving the experience !!!
Just phenomenal! I have watched a lot of videos introducing new OS and this was awesome. All the new features of the iPad made watching it and interacting with all the things you were talking about at the same time! Thank you so much for taking the time to do this, you are an excellent teacher, consistent use of feature names and comparisons to the desktop and other OS; all were so helpful to highlight what these new features/differences relate to. I sent your video to all my staff who use iPads as their primary devices - we Remote Desktop into our desktop computers from the iPad Pro 12.9 with Magic Keyboard/touchpad and so no longer need laptops.
They’ll stack in a ‘cascade’ but you have to be in Portrait mode … you’re welcome 😁 Yeah, I know, we majority use the Pads in Landscape. I like Stage Manager. There was a similar feature on PowerBooks over 25+ years ago. Yeah, I’m an OG Mac user. Happy to see it on a iPad.
I forgot to add, Great video. My favorite feature is the update to Notes & Reminders. The core Apps. Also dictation is worthy of use, a huge step up for those with special needs.
I really like that close button. I close every app after using it and now I don't have to swipe up anymore. I was really used to not just swiping up, but holding to open the app switcher and close the app. Now I just tap the multitasking button and select close.
My friends suggested I buy the M2 12.9. After watching this video, I afraid to go near it. I figure it'll make a nice cheese platter. Your knowledge is astounding.
The best iPadOS review video on YT Comprehensive and detailed. I feel you have saved me tremendous time exploring myself in this iPadOS 16 The fact that Stage Manager can’t freely move app window at a location one chooses, is driving me nut and causing users to make extra efforts to rearrange app window! Apple is losing my confidence in them
I like stage manager, I actually like the windows moving around and the animations, it basically guarantees that you can't hide and loose an app. I can certainly see how it would annoy power users, but so far I love it. I also liked compact tabs in safari on my MAC, I generally like the new features that apple introduces that power users often complain about so oh well I'll just have to enjoy them until apple takes it away, Great video as usual. Thank you.
While I think the automatic windows managing feature is great, I also think Apple should make it as an option in the Stage Manager setting to turn the automatic feature off for people who prefer to manage their windows manually like on the Mac
@@kamilstudios nah I think it’s better to have the opinionated take. Especially since people have been complaining about snapping and window management on macOS for years
Too late … we’re already using it for ourselves 😊 I’ll watch anyway ‘cause I like your channel. Kewl thing with SM is if you’re watching, say, a RUclips video, no matter the windows opened RUclips swings around on top minimized. Also in calendar, just press and hold the date & a new event window will pop up.
Thank you so much for that display scaling tip! At first I wasn’t going to use stage manager much on my 2018 11 inch iPad Pro, but after turning on more space it feels different and way more usable!
This is the best review of iPados 16. But one thing you missed is the overall stability and battery life, I‘ve heard people complain about it. Do you think this update is already ready to be installed or should people wait for a later update?
Chris I have ADHD and I heard you have it to can you please do a detailed walk through of your phone setup and app placement for iPhone and also iPad. Love ❤️ your style and setups.

I don’t use the setting to hide the recent apps on the side. If you drag a window to a big enough size, it hides on its own. I like to have something there when for example I use an iPhone app in the middle of the screen. Anything’s better than emptiness.
I use Things as well…Seeing your overview of Reminders I am thinking….is it time to move everything into Reminders??? Feature-vise they seem similar now…Things obviously is much more polished. But then, 2 apps vs. 1. What do you’ll think?
You know a new software feature is great when you’re automatically drawn to it. The beauty of Apple used to be that they understood this. They’ve been losing this slowly but surely. There is WAY too much thought that has to go into Stage manager. I don’t see myself using it. If I need to use that many different windows, I need to go to my PC/laptop that’s hooked up to three monitors. The split view on the iPad is all I really need.
Honestly... For me, the stage manager is obsolete because it's very poorly executed. Resizing, grid, and all other features are unnecessarily complicated and not executed well... Its tiring to use because of all resizing and begging windows to stick to the grid you need... The only thing iPad needs in my opinion is the ability to split screen horizontally when used in portrait mode. Great video btw... He always explains everything in such detail!
Overall i like iPadOS 16 new update, but im so mad about stage manager. I currently have a iPad Air 4th gen with the A14 bonic chip but today i find out after I updated my ipad that i dont get stage manager and it only works with iPad pros that have the A12X, A12Z Bonic, M1 and M2 that’s some bullshit I really like the idea of being able to use your iPad as a PC and connecting it to a external display and using the full screen (even though stage manager on a external display is delayed)🤦🏽♂️ they should’ve specified that when they announce this stage manager feature cuz i thought all iPads were getting that when iPadOS 16 comes out so now I gotta sell my iPad Air and buy the new iPad Air with M1 but I’m also thinking I should just go ahead and get the pro m1 or the new pro M2 cuz who knows what else they’re going to start locking down to the pros, especially with Davinci resolve coming out for iPad soon I really think its going to be an iPad Pro only app.
Extremely helpful video. One note about Remind Me in Mail -- once you add a Remind Me to an email, the email stays in the inbox and does not disappear unfortunately. So, for people who love an inbox zero every day this is problematic to use :(
This was really helpful, I could never pull this all together intelligibly. What a dark time for my favorite Apple product. The software and product line are in deep confusion.
By definition not everybody is an early adopter so can understand criticism of SM, however for me its an important step forward as an “ipad-first” user. Not sure on the too complex call out. Apple needs to understand how people use it in the real world to make interface decisions. If youre wary of change, keep SM turned off. Personally I love the new features
Thanks for your great reviews. Quick question that even apple genius couldn’t answered: once you use the apple pencil and want to type, the small keyboard appears (like in an iphone), how can we switch to the big ipad keyboard. Couldn’t find any button. Am obligated to switch to an other app like safari pretend I want to write something, they big ipad keyboard appears, i switch back to the previous app, and big keyboard is there again… Probably has a quicker way to do. What do you think?
Eh I prefer the grid system it avoids the mess of windowing on macOS. I actually wishes that macOS windowing system worked the same instead of being so arbitrary and messy.
Hi Chris, is the battery draining fixed on iOS 16.1? And have you updated your previous iPhone 13 Pro Max to iOS 16? Because I updated my iPhone 13 Pro to iOS 16 and now I'm on iOS 16.0.3 and the battery life is a little worse than it should be.
Same here! Before iOS 16, I could go from 7am to 6pm, arrive home and still have about 50% batter, not anymore. I’m now reluctant to upgrade to iPadOS because of this.
Your iPad videos are amazing. Question, I cannot figure out how to open up two documents from the same program at the same time much like you can do on a MacBook. For example, I cannot open up 2 separate files from the Apple Numbers program or the Google Numbers program. This can be done easily on a MacBook or desktop, but it appears it cannot be done at all on an iPad. Any suggestion? I’m trying to use my new iPad Pro is a every day computer. Please help.
thanks for the video - I’ve been hoping that I’m just missing something. I just can’t get stage manager to work for me. But there are some things I need like live camera support while working on something else. I just HATE using stage manager. Not quick, easy, or efficient. Terrible to use in my opinion.
Just starting to use the new features, but liking most of stage manager ... so far. Excited about notes and reminders changes. I would love to see improvements in Files! this is one of the areas that (for me) keeps the ipad from being a "real computer" I do a lot of stuff with files and being able to have tabs would be a big help. Also, compared to Finder on MacOS, it just seems a bit cartoonish and not ready for prime time, still.
And now the news apps are open in the same stage. Apple really listened, and I am confident that the stage manager will be amazing after few more updates. I really wish there is more mouse support for the ipad. I mean track pad is ok, but my mouse is much more precise, and reliable. At last, i really want try using ipad with an external monitor with mechanical keyboard and mouse. It will be amazing if it can perform like my laptop. Now, we just need some desktop ported app to ipad, such as a real excel, Microsoft word, PowerPoint, etc. Now, those apps loses so much features that they are basically useless.
Can’t wait to see you creating new shortcuts for stage manager. Like I’d love to have a automation which disabled center stage when I take the iPad off the Magic Keyboard and activate it automatically when i put the iPad on the keyboard.
Congratulations, Apple, with Stage Manager, you made the iPad unexplainable to Grandma and Grandpa. My mother had dementia, and she could use the iPad long after she lost the ability to use the computer. This video is good.
I tried using Stage Manager on the beta, and abandoned as too confusing and reverted back to split screen. 90% of the time I prefer to have one window full screen and rarely is two in Split View, plus a third in slide over not enough. I did try Stage Manager again after watching this video, but find it too fiddly- I waste time managing windows, rather than actually working and even on my 12.9” iPad Pro having three or four windows open side by side is rather cramped and I hate having them overlapping - that is something I tried to avoid on the Mac. So for me Stage Manager brings a complication from the Mac and makes it even more complicated- not good
I get why the right click menu is vertical in tablet mode, that’s cause cause of the screen is filled by the keyboard so right click will lead to a menu that will have to overlap the keyboard, so I prefer the current layout
I wished stage manager combined the old split screen as well, so you could still pair 2 apps with a full screen view. There is wasted space with stage manager in certain situations. It just doesn’t feel as intuitive or efficient as it could be. I think its a good step forward.
Great review. I have an M1 iPad Pro 12.9 and did the iPad OS 16.1 update, but the weather app looks nothing like in your video. It looks more like a blown up iPhone weather app. Any advice would be greatly appreciated
Great video as always Chris!! I was very used to multitasking on ipados15, with shortcuts to open simultaneous apps as I needed and the lateral apps… i Think Stage manager is random still, It would be good tho have your 4 apps “inmovible” but when I come back to my group is a mess because of what I have open!! The notes and reminders apps improvements are good!
As always a very informative video and great job. Thanks! A personal note: I find that Stage Manager runs better on my old iPad Pro 2018 than on the M1 iPad. How can that be? More bugs on the M1 than on the old iPad. Maybe I should sell the new one again.
