Patrick, our resident videographer and photographer has been with us 5 months now and has NO IDEA how to take care of his car.
Many people like Patrick can sometimes get lost in the sea of car care products. What do I wash my car with? How can I keep it clean after I've washed it? It's the simple things that we want to help and educate you on.
So, introducing "Detailing 101". A step by step guide on the basics of car care, featuring Patrick and his BMW E36. During this series you'll see us educate Patrick on the most simple ways to Wash, Clean & Prep, Polish, Protection and Maintain his car.
Our aim is to share with you the simplest forms of car care, whether you're a non car guy, a car enthusiast, or someone that just wants to further their knowledge about detailing or the Meguiar's product range.
Once upon a time the action of "Clay baring" was to be used by professionals only. Well that's a total myth. Claying is one of the easiest steps you can do in your detailing adventure. This video explains not only the benefits of clay but also the simple steps in how to do it.
If Patrick can do it, ANYONE can do it!

I just brought a car and washed it multiple times. It had black tar splats and other random splats on the surface which made it rough. I brought a clay bar, as soon as I rubbed it on my clay bar was brown!
I always appreciate a British accent. It ads a sense of legitimacy to everything.

Once the first side of the hood was done and wiped dry, it looked shinier to me! Of course it still needs more work!
This worked like a charm for me last year. Now that winter is over, I just stopped by to refresh my memory.

Bro I used clay bar on my 2015 mustang gt and omg the paint looks like it’s brand new, it kept leaving the clay bar yellow and the residue from the lubricant was yellowish too. I highly recommend clay bar bro
If the detailer your using is just for lubrication purposes just use soapy water mixed in a spray bottle and save yourself a few quid .

I plan on using Adam’s detailer the pink spray bottle. I don’t mind using something expensive when it comes to my car, I’m keeping it to last longer

This series in general has taught me a lot about how to do things I've never thought I'd do because of time or my skill level. Given the extra time I have while in lockdown I'm going to attempt to go all out on the exterior of my car to get it looking better.
Bought a load of new products and did a trial area until I can spend a whole day on my car. TBF my bonnet wasn't that bad but the clay still picked up some contamination and feels perfect to the touch.

My grandad used to use a bar of Irish spring soap. After it dried off, he go over the whole car with a coffee filter. 1960s Dart olive green. Rip grampa 🍻

Detailing spray contains chemicals that clay baring doesn’t require... would you not want to use a lubricant especially deigned for clay barring?

Recently clay barred a front bumper section on my black car using another manufacturer’s clay bar. What a mess! It left loads of marks and light scratches despite following the instructions. It took my a while to get it back to normal! Have since tried your product and followed your video and the result is amazing! Thanks for sharing!
Hi great instructions on how to clay your car, ive got slight yellowing around the wheel arch of my white sandero, will claying remove the yellowing?
I think you see a hazy layer removed with the claybar imma try the ceramic next week I ordered it today I cant wait to try it on my subari and Volkswagen

It comes as part of our clay kits. Just a good lubricant for the clay.
Love the vids guys but Dale I’m sorry but I don’t think Lubricity is a real word , lubricant , lubrication maybe lol. Amazing video thanks a lot, i bought the Meguiar's clay and I'll try to do it and then compound Polish, i have a question, after every section i need to push the contaminating to the center right? How many times i can do this? (My car is 7 years old), and can i use this process for all my car? And after i finish can i re use the clay for another time (months) or do i need to buy a new one? Thanks a lot

It will dry..i keep mine in a zip lock bag right after use

What are the general steps to detail old paint?

If so, which product do you recommend for each?
Halfords own polish. "They" did a comparison of products and some at Halfords got the formula wrong and it's as good as the most expensive out there.
If anyone is sceptical about a clay bar then try one. I personally never used them until recently but I was absolutely amazed at the amount of contaminants it removed. Even iron dust from a grinder that has settled on a car was removed.
Does it work wonders? Like the shiny lasts longer or car washes become easy
Hi guys, love the clay bar, but iv never tried it on glass.
If I used this on my windscreen would it smear it , ot would it work the same way on paint work.

best ever is to use Bilt Hamber clay fr UK they have their own clay mine ! avail in S , M, H grades it is so pure they say and it is TRUE ! you can use just plain water for lube ! ! try it let me know what you think ? and update your video w/an addendum ? thx Jack

So in 7 years of my detail experience I've never done clay bar.. but i do ceramic coating and paint correction and polishing. If you can polish is clay bar ever worth it?
I saw him using the bar on the sun roof, do you do that on all the windows?

Thanks for the video guys... Just what I needed. I’m only just getting into detailing. I’ve had my 8 year-old Mazda 3 since new. It’s been washed incorrectly most of it’s life with me I’m afraid and is now absolutely covered in swirl marks (though in my defence, they used water-based paint which is not as tough as the stuff used on older cars I’m told). I’m hoping to start clay barring it soon and already have the boxed kit you show at the start. Are there any other precautions I need to take with the water-based paintwork? Would I have potential problems using a DA/rotary polisher when I finally get one? I’m looking forward to having a crack and have bought hand polishing pads and Ultimate Compound and Polish for after!
Iron is the worst, have to hit it with an iron remover also once down to a clean surface. Probably best to do before claying.

Thanks. Going to try on my 66 Mustang tomorrow. Definitely has a rough feel to it. Just did my 93 White Mustang with Ultimate Compound, then ultimate wax only. Which was fine. But the dark blue 66 has a little more roughness to touch. So I bought Meguiars clay kit. We'll see how it goes. Sounds and looks straightforward and easy.
Use white spirit on soft cloth, faster quicker cheaper before detailing, removes old waxes and polish's. Keep away from textured trims (black rubberised etc) won't harm it, but will leave white residue that will need to be cleaned off. It will also remove tar and colour scuffs without needing abrasives like G3. As to that old BMW they are cleaning, better to spend the money sorting the rust scabs first on those quarter panels. There's an old saying, you can't polish a turd👍

I’ve never used mequiar’s I use Autoglym products on my Mercedes SL. I’m thinking of trying Meguiars hope it’s good as Autoglym.
can you use the ultimate quick detailer for clay bar also? because i have that one instead of the one you guys used on the video
We suggest using the generic quik detailer as you only need it for lubrication for the clay.

So i waited for the sun to cool and clayed the car, hard graft for a beginner but chuffed with the results. I also did the car once clayed with a coat of ultimate quick wax all over, including wheels and gelled the tyres. I use the ultimate quick wax and ultimate detailer on a regular basis as i like the ease of use. Should i be thinking of anything else polish wise?
Good work! Clay really does improve the way the car feels but not looks. If you want a polish we would suggest the Ultimate Polish.

accidentley dropped the bottle from the Maguire's foam kit bottle the straw part would you bin it or just wash it and use it again
The detailer lube thingy, can I use water or some home grown solution?
CRM6718 water with just a couple drops of household washing up liquid will work
We suggest using the Quik Detailer as it a brilliant lubricant for clay. There isn't enough lubricity in water to make sure the clay works effectively.

Will a clay bar remove what looks like tiny rust particles all over my white two year old hyundai i10. It's as if the whole car was sprayed with a fine orange mist....argggggh!!!!
silcedpage: Your problem is called "rail dust" and it is very common on white cars. Actually, it's common on most cars, but it is more visible on white colors. It should come off with clay... but it might not. Try a test spot with the clay first. If that doesn't work, try a test spot with a cleaner wax. Meguiar's cleaner wax is good but I personally like the D166 Ultra Polishing Wax from their professional line (M66 quick detailer is great on rail dust as well). Be sure to "work" the cleaner wax onto the surface. Don't just apply a coat, make sure you work the product into the paint with some slight pressure. That pressure will help the product cut the rail dust off of the surface of the paint. If the cleaner wax won't work, you can use any Meguiar's polish. If that doesn't work... you have some nuclear rail dust and need to compound and polish the car! Don't worry, it probably won't go that far and the cleaner wax should remove the rail dust without too much trouble.

I never see people clay their doors or side skirts etc.... Is it ok to do so? I could imagine being loads of contaminants on them areas
Absolutely! You can clay pretty much anything! Even Wheels!
Easy and quick. Yet it cost $1000-$3000 for them to do it for you. Do it yourself for like $100
seen detailers just using a bucket of fresh wash and wax with water as a lubricant is that suitable?
You can use shampoo in water to lubricate however we would advise using the Quik Detailer as the lubricant
After folding clay bar many times on same car, wouldnt the dirt eventually end up on the face of the bar??
Each car is different so some cars you will be able to do the whole car with just half the clay, If you find the clay to be getting visibly dirty you can switch to the other half of the clay you cut earlier.

When you call bar your car can you add a ceramic coat as a protectant or do you need to add a wax then add the ceramic coat
Doesnt quick detailer leave some kind of residue on the vehicle? Would that not be bad if you are going to polish it?

Once you've finished clay-barring, can you go straight to using Meguiars Hybrid Ceramic wax to finish, or should you wash off any remaining detailing lube first?
you can wax the car immediately absolutely! maybe try our new Hybrid Ceramic Liquid Wax?!
@@meguiarsuk yes, I did that and I'm pleased with the results, although I'm convinced the Wash Plus shampoo has caused swirls in my paintwork all over. I'm pissed off
@@husky041 Sorry to hear this. It's unlikely that the wash plus itself caused the swirl marks. However they can easily be removed with the Ultimate compound.
So after claying the car should I go straight to ceramic wax spray or would you just use polish then wax?
Will it work to remove paint splashes from Car?
I was amazed how smooth my Acura ilx was after claying. It also made waxing by hand a lot easier.

The clay bar will remove any contaminants sitting on the surface of the paint.

I’m just getting into your videos! Already picked up some Meguiar buckets and grit trays. Hopefully you guys still reply, my question is, say I’ve washed my car, am I okay to clay bar it, and that’s it, or do you have to do other things after you clay bar every time?
I would wax it after that. Or else contaminants will accumulate within the porosity of the paint faster than it would without a coat of wax, y'know? 😊👍🏻
