When too much is going on.... That's when you smoke some ganja and you figure it out lol but I get it, some people just want the bass blaring simple catchy tunes so they don't have to actually pay attention
Tool is probably one of the most complex bands you’ve done. That’s probably why it feels a little overwhelming or messy. 4:00 they do this a lot. It’s to leave space and focus on other instruments or to create a build up into a breakdown or bridge. Which is what you hear at the 7:00 & 7:35 mark. I think tool makes the best rhythms and riffs that makes you want to head band.
Yeah but if you’ve never listened to a lot of heavier rock and metal, they do this a lot. The emphasis in this kind of music is that the instruments are a big focus, and sometimes is the main focus.
Maynard is one of, if not the best singer of his generation. He is really good friends with The Deftones. He does a song with them called Passenger. It is fantastic. This song is about the hypocrisy of government officials telling you not do something while they are doing the exact same thing And the saying is The POT calling the kettle black.
Tool, is really for people who can read between the lines, it's not like typical music. Too many humans these days are needing things so damn literal. Like everyone is Drax. There is a lot to see, hear, feel, and read in their music. It's never the same. Lyrics matter. The time signatures matter, overall, people need to push themselves to be more. Critical thinking is a must to listen and appreciate it. If you're wanting it to be so literal like most popular music is, it's not going to vibe with you. Not trying to say you're dumb and incapable of this, please don't take it that way.
you're making stuff up here, I've seen people reacting to Tool, who enjoyed it, even if they describe themselves as "rap fans" not everything is so sophisticated as you try to describe here, "10 000 days" album for example is a very groovy album (best example is actually the song she's reacting here to - The Pot), you don't have to "read between the lines" here too much Lateralus and Aenima actually are a bit of a different story, because there's actually more going on there, but the truth is, it doesn't have to be for everyone, it's as simple as that, some people will dig it, some not, even if they're normally listen to the most sophisticated and complex jazz music
Once you get to the point where you listen to Tool everyday for 30 years, you will start to cherish and appreciate the times when you couldn’t understand this band. You are so lucky, you’re doing great!
When you hear that beautiful bass line and she says that something was missing and that something sounded wrong, I almost cried. In fact, something sounded completely wrong, but not in the music...in the reaction!
Hi, i hope you see this. This song is about hypocrisy. Tool uses a lot of abstract language, metaphors, and idiomatic expressions. Everything is intentional with tool, if the instruments are chaotic, they're calm, or the music is louder than his voice or the other way around it was done with a purpose. Tool is exactly what it is, a tool for you to use. The lyrics leaves interpretation to create your own relationship with it outside of how Maynard relates to his own lyrics.
I myself and a lot others didn't like tool at first but it grew on me to the point where i listen now to tool everyday and it just gets better trust me. You're doing great ❤
100% this was me, used to make fun of my friends for listening to them back in the 90s. Then they dragged me to a Tool concert, came out a different person and have been a huge fan ever since. Went to Woodstock 99 the next year and nothing there came close to the experience I had at that Tool show, well Korn came pretty close lol.
Tool are one if, if not the most intelligent band ever. Maynard is such a generational singer, high iq , does not suffer fools easily. Its not a band thats for everyone, thats for sure. Fair play for your honesty.
If you’re into Korn, I’d recommend your next Tool song being something off of their first album, Undertow. It’s a lot more straightforward and aggressive without as many time changes and prog elements.
Youre missing something, then there's so much going on... give it time. It takes time for your mind to appreciate the work they put into all these masterpieces.
I once said to someone in the distant past..."Those who don't understand the actual art in everything are as shallow as walking in the rain for 20 seconds"
Hey, nice to see that you gave Tool another listen. If the sound isn't for you than it's not for you. They use a lot of odd time signatures so that makes it difficult to pick up the beat on a first listen. If you do decide to try Tool again may I suggest Lateralus, If you don't like that than Tool is for sure not for you. :)
Its got "odd" time signature beat. Hard to get used to if you're not used to it. Some people come around, eventually & have that lightbulb moment when it all starts to make sense
Tool is complex. Overtime you will appreciate them. Do the “sober” Live version with Maynard. You will really appreciate them after that live performance
Hey Mia, about Schism, no one is going to be or should be surprised by your reaction to that video. I'm sure someone has already stated this, but if not, listen to Schism again, use the lyric video. The song is a playback on how a relationship devolves and how it can evolve again. There are literally counselors who would say it should be required listening in couples counseling. Schism is a beautiful song. Once you get it, it's easier to appreciate it. This song was written about a judge who went to prison for a cocaine ring after putting a friend of his in jail for Marijuana. Music is supposed to be art, and most modern music is art akin to taping a banana to a wall. That's reality and many modern music lovers don't require artistry and true musical talent to consider music to be good, if it has a snarky chorus and an easy beat to bob their heads to it's great. People that appreciate real art and elite level instrumentation will always keep this stuff alive. It's all good. Tool makes music for people to help themselves with. To help you come to terms with reality, your mental states, how to cope, how to improve and thrive. They touch on social issues, personal issues, and personal growth, and especiallythe human condition. Not all of it is comfortable, but if you listen long enough, you realize, it's VERY Real!.
It's funny to hear someone say that a moment where most of the instruments cut out except for the bass doesn't sound good. When you hear a song enough times, a decision like that makes perfect sense. It's a constant build up to the next part of the song, and doing something like just leaving you with a tasty bass hook for a few bars is a great way to help you settle into the groove of the track. Then they hit you with another layer, then another. If they threw it all on you at once, it might be too much. But like other comments have said, this is a kind of music that takes time to "get".
"Kangaroo done hung the juror with the innocent" is such a deep line. When you really pay attention to the lyrics and understand what he's saying, it adds a completely new element to the song
Tools instrumentation is advanced. For some it’s hard to find the grove. The more you listen to Tool the more your brain will start to understand what it’s processing. They use a lot of syncopation in their music. Which basically means the instruments are all playing different time signatures. At certain parts of the song all the time signatures will come together and sound “normal” to you. They also use odd time signatures.. most rock music is in 4/4 time. “Schizm” for example is in 5/8 and 7/8. The Pot is standard 4/4 time but with the syncopation it sounds more advanced. Try Tool - “Sober” If you don’t like that song, Tool isn’t for you. :)
“A lot is going on” is an understatement. This is the band with what are likely the most complex arraignments in the rock world. Not everyone gets it. Still the best band ever. I love Korn but Korn is to Tool as Itsy Bitsy Spider is to Beethoven’s 5th Symphony.
Happy Sunday Mia! 🖤glad you gave the band Tool another chance. This is one of their good ones. They were weird and hard for to me to get into at first too haha
Not my favorite song of theirs, but in most of their songs, 'Vicarious', '7empest', 'The Grudge', (just to name a few) they use a ton of polyrhythms and odd time signatures. In their song 'Lateralus' they even incorporate the Fibonacci sequence. They are not a band to casually sit and try to figure out. Really some complex stuff...again, not so much in The Pot.
This song is about hypocrisy in general and is written using mixed metaphors (like "the pot calling the kettle black" and "don't piss on me and tell me its raining"). The singer lives in Arizona. Around the time this song was written, in the news a prosecutor in the state, who was known for seeking maximum punishment for simple drug infractions was caught at Sky Harbor airport trying to fly to Mexico with something like $30k in cash.
OK, try "Sober" or "PNUEMA", Also its harder to get into them without any musical background as then you would really be mind blown. As for your last question, thats a you call, but I will say this, after one you can just sit down and throw on 10000 days (the ablum "the pot" is on) and just get lost in bliss
"The Pot," a standout track by Tool, is a compelling intersection of heavy funk grooves and biting political commentary, laden with idiomatic references that echo the linguistic richness of Black American culture. The title itself nods to the expression "the pot calling the kettle black," a phrase rooted in the vernacular of hypocrisy and self-reflection, but here weaponized to skewer moral corruption and duplicity. Maynard James Keenan’s vocals are practically a sermon, snapping with phrases like "Who are you to wave your finger?" and "You must have been out your mind," evoking the cadence of call-and-response traditions found in gospel and blues. The syncopated rhythms of the track mirror the elasticity of funk, a genre born from African American ingenuity, while the sneering delivery of lines like "You must've been high" drips with the playful rebuke of someone calling out a preacher caught sinning. Beyond its linguistic and musical nods, "The Pot" is Tool’s most overtly political track, a seething critique of power structures and moral grandstanding that feels as much a cultural artifact as it does a progressive rock anthem. It doesn’t just groove; it accuses, implicates, and challenges, all while nodding to the rich traditions that inspired its funk-infused fire. Also, great tits!
most progressive rock and metal takes several listens to appreciate. after all these years enjoying lots of it, it still takes several listens to warm up to new stuff for me.
Good reaction. Just answering a question. Ganja is just another name for that wacky baccy. That devil's Lettuce. That Mary Jane. Tool us either hit or miss for people. No worries. Everybody likes, dislikes different things. Glad you gave them another try at least! Thank you!
Don't feel bad if you don't like everything you hear. Tool fans being mad at you shouldn't concern you at all. Many of them simply can't comprehend someone not thinking Maynard is god's gift to man.
I almost got in trouble wearing my Tool shirt in 10th grade in the mid 90s. The back had what sort of looked like a wrench but there were two circular holes at the bottom making it clearly resemble a penis. But still had the metallic texture and design of a normal wrench. I loved it, one of the first edgy shirts I ever owned and have wanted to push boundaries with my shirts ever since.
Hell yeah!!! This song is so good Mia!! 46 and 2 please. You won't regret it. Such a great song Also check out a new band for your channel In This Moment - Blood I think you're deep enough in for them
Ngl took me a lil bit of time to get into them and now I love them honestly give it another go later on its like a movie the first time it's alright then u watch it a second time and laugh ur ass off I'm glad u did like some of it
4:05 You'll notice a trend with Tool songs. They like to buildup. By the end of every song they're basically just jamming out. Too bad you're not a fan of Maynards voice. He's actually considered a legend in the scene 😂. Not for everyone I suppose. I'm not mad... I'm just Disappointed. Lol. You should try 46 & 2 though. If that doesn't hit, then probably just move on. There's thousands of other great bands out there. 😋😋 Edit: You should give Linkin park a try. they might be more your jam. they have a female singer now (since chester passed away) I'd start with something off their first 2 albums though. To get a better idea of their sound.
Wild idea - you should listen to the reaction OkayReno did to their Aenima album today. I think he did a good unpack. It's their best album IMHO, perhaps my favorite rock album just for how deep it goes but also for how cohesive it is.
When you hear one of their songs on a random day and time, then you will just notice something grow in you. That make you obsessed. Thats what happened to me, heard them years ago for the first time with a friend that suggested. Didnt get hooked. Until I heard them randomly later. When you can hear the genius behind everything and dont focus on one thing like you do now. But I love the honest review, makes you stand out from other reactors.
No hate here- it's best to focus on the music first with a band like Tool; the music is enough to overwhelm most people. Glad you've given them another shot. As cheesy as this may sound, Tool is more of an experience than a band; and yes, being high takes Tool to another level. ;) Continue Spiraling Out...
You are doing a great job! Keep going. Tool is different and most peoples minds are conditioned for songs to follow a certain recipe. Just think of it less as a song and more of a sonic work of art. Admire it like a painting in a gallery and it’ll make more sense! That said, Maynard has some beautiful singing on the new album that I think you could appreciate. For example, “Descending” is a close-your-eyes experience and a masterpiece IMO.
Yeah I think this evening is the best song as far as what they put into it the Man of Steel it took because it's not my favorite my favorite is always the same I mean of course it's the one that's playing
The Pot calling the Kettle black is a saying for hypocrisy. Maynard is talking about evil hypocritical lawyers saying the ganja (Weed, cannabis, marijuana) is bad. Saying they must have been high. Tool is probably the most complicated band you've reacted to. Schism describes it best, "Finding beauty in the dissonance." The music doesn't always make sense and alot of people find it difficult to bob their head to because of the odd time signatures, but there is always a groove. Hint: Usually slower than your first assumption :P Pneuma sometime soon? :D It's my favorite TOOL song.
Can't blame you for missing the music if the video strokes some kind of primal fear. I bet a lot of commenters would forget what they were listening to if it went along with a video of IRS agents walking up their front yard, or something else personally terrifying.
A young female in an AC/DC shirt saying Tool doesn't sound good and she doesn't like the screaming is an effing WILD thing to me 🤣🤣 What is this world coming to 🤦
I think it is fair to say that Tool is not conventional rock and roll and therefore not everyone's cup of tea. I agree with @indade that musicians love this band because of the uniqueness, lyrics that make you think and the skill of the band members. The bass guitar on this song is bad ass.
I would consider Tool to be in the category of “prog rock”, which explains the “weirdness”. They use a lot of odd time signatures which can make it hard to “groove” along with. FWIW Danny Carrey (the drummer) is a drumming icon! Personally I think their song Pneuma is the best one.
If "too much is going on" Tool may not be for you. It's okay.
When too much is going on.... That's when you smoke some ganja and you figure it out lol
but I get it, some people just want the bass blaring simple catchy tunes so they don't have to actually pay attention
Well said... I remember thinking these guys are really good at ROCKING, and Math! 🫡🤘
Forty six & 2 is a nice piece, imo.

Now this is how you are introed to Tool.
This song is such a banger. I love this album. Jambi and Right in Two are other tracks that are great to review.
You're going to love A Perfect Circle (3 Libras) and Puscifer (The Remedy).
One of the most incredible songs ever performed.
Ngl took me a lil bit of time to get into them and now I love them honestly give it another go later on its like a movie the first time it's alright then u watch it a second time and laugh ur ass off I'm glad u did like some of it
Maynard rocks young lady.He one one the smartest intense song writer. GIVE THEM A CHANCE MIA
Edit: You should give Linkin park a try. they might be more your jam. they have a female singer now (since chester passed away) I'd start with something off their first 2 albums though.
To get a better idea of their sound.
They are the best band you’ve reacted to. You need to listen to more!
Im shocked and respect that this woman aint got a only fans ..because she would be a multi millionaire by now 💯👍🇬🇧
You should check out the Deftones song Passenger.
The singer from Tool sings the chorus.
WHAT!!!!!!!! Something is missing??????? Yoooo That Bass is EPIC!!!!!!
Maynard James Keenan is a vocal phenom.
I used ro hate tool. But omce you get to know them, they are amazing.
Great live shows too.
If you love drums you should check out the drum cam video of pneuma
insane bass work from tool
Yes! Double meanings everywhere. The pot calling the kettle black. Talking about the battle over legalizing pot. A lot going on.
Maybe you should try A Perfect Circle - Judith.
Maynard is singer in 2 other bands. This is his 2nd band.
You need something very basic and simple. Do QUEEN "Dragon Attack." I think that may be up your alley.
Schism describes it best, "Finding beauty in the dissonance."
The music doesn't always make sense and alot of people find it difficult to bob their head to because of the odd time signatures, but there is always a groove.
Hint: Usually slower than your first assumption :P
Pneuma sometime soon? :D It's my favorite TOOL song.
Baby girl I have nothing but LOVE AND RESPECT FOR YOUR EYES
You do know her eyes are up there, right?
Can't blame you for missing the music if the video strokes some kind of primal fear. I bet a lot of commenters would forget what they were listening to if it went along with a video of IRS agents walking up their front yard, or something else personally terrifying.
A young female in an AC/DC shirt saying Tool doesn't sound good and she doesn't like the screaming is an effing WILD thing to me 🤣🤣
What is this world coming to 🤦
This entire song is about Hypocrisy and the pot calling the kettle black, Tool is all about research in every song they write.
Still haven't heard Tom MacDonald yet! Please try him out You won't be disappointed😊😊
