THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, I was going crazy trying to figure out if my 1983 clutch was still any good. Thanks a million for this tutorial. You saved me some money.
Thannnnnkssssss u so much for this video i'have fix my car with this video thanks u SO MUCH! Before i see this video suggested by a friend of mine I'm gone a be crazy!
@@straybenzes recall learning the rolled newspaper method, where you thrust it into the spinning blades while the engines cold. It should cause the blade to stop whirling about. Shade tree mechanic stuff I'm afraid. Stay safe and be very well.
@@straybenzes they just don't make them like they used too any more. Used to use them for shelf paper in my kitchen before I got married the first time. She thought it was a tacky idea.
Additionally if you can use a rolled up newspaper to stop the fan at idle speed the clutch is no good. On my 95 C280 is a perfect example of that not only can I stop it but I can turn it backwards while the engine is running. That causes the car to run at a higher temperature causing it to depend more on the dual auxiliary fans.
Yup, heat is not your friend and not fixing it right away has far reaching consequences. Not only is the head gasket more stressed, but the transmission oil temp goes up too on units like the S class Benz 722.3+ transmission that has a cooler line connected to the bottom of the main radiator. Aux fans for the older cars were really more of a main back up measure and are more so needed keeping the AC condenser temp down. Thanks for your post!
I just bought new one, and it's odd that my temp higher than the old one, 100 celcius at night. Then i tried your method and yes i can stop it. I tried when the engine off too. The restrictions also not as good as this video. I didn't know vicious fan can be bad even new.
The brand is Liland Global and you can get it from multiple aftermarket sources. Here is one from RockAuto: www.rockauto.com/en/parts/liland+global,455AA,radiator,2172 . The cooler works just as well as the original. This one is for the 300SDL. Engine overheating issues usually are not caused by the radiator. Very often it is either the thermostat and surprisingly the temp gauge is not all that accurate. The other culprits can be worn coolant pumps but more likely build up in block or head. That means taking the head off to clean the engine cooling paths thoroughly. The radiator is so oversized that very rarely will you be able to reduce engine overheating issues with electric fan conversions etc. Good luck.
Unfortunately, the OEM part is the way to go. Expensive, but that is the only way you are not going to end up with absolute junk. I would even take the chance on a genuine used part before I buy another reproduction unit made with pride in China.

@@murraykriner9425 I like this simple trick. Trying to find a newspaper is going to be the toughest part anymore. ;)

happy wrenching ! Thanks man.
Any time!
Where did you buy your aluminium radiator. How much was it and did it help with cooling. Thank you.

Which fan clutch do you recommend for replacing? Some people say that original Behr one is not that good theses days... Which brand can you recommend?

is it also applicable for 1990s m104 engine?
If it is an inline six like the W24 300E for instance then yes, it is the same concept.
I freaked out my freind showing that their fan needed replacing by stopping it with my fingers when the engine was running.
Yeah, be careful. That can hurt badly if you are wrong.
Your valve lifters are bad
Thx.
