I can personally attest to how servicing your fan clutch can improve engine temps. Pierre told me exactly how many degrees my 350SDL’s engine temp would reduce when he was finished and he was spot on. Mind was blown.
I did this today to my 79 300D. Temp is now a full 20-25F lower. Worth trying for sure! Super Lube part number is 56504. Mine took 3 ounces. Thanks, Pierre!!
Thanks for this info. Hope I still have the BEHR/SACHS fan clutch in my R129 SL500(M119) I have minor overheating when I stuck in traffic with my car, it can go up to 100-105Celsius so I guess my fan clutch might can go low on silicone oil. Going to find out in the next month :)
Hah this just figures, everything on this 240d is fixable. I had a fuel sender issue where it was stuck at 1/2 tank. I figured I'd just buy a new one and swap it out. Nope ,I took it all apart and cleaned the nasty diesel gack out of it and it works fine now. Probably not a bad idea to look at my fan now, I figured those are a sealed deal like most other cars.
I was curious if the pin and spring do anything, I assumed the spring was some kind of bimetallic strip that increased the coupling to the fan when it got warmer. I had no idea you could add oil.
I'll have to see if my W140 has this style fan clutch. It seems like it locks up pretty well but the engine chronically runs hotter than I think it should (95-100°) on hot days.
Remember that the thermostat does not fully open until about 95°C (varies slightly between engines). 95-100°C engine temps may be hotter than you think it should run, but it is not hotter than MB engineers think it should run. If your engine doesn't go above 100°C on hot days, that is fantastic.
@@W124performance It does go above 100°, pretty easily sometimes. Even on moderately warm days with the A/C off it'll sit right at 100° on the freeway which doesn't seem right to me.
Can someone explain why the clutch needs to be stored with the pin oriented a certain way? After it's installed in the car, won't the pin turn with the fan, thus allowing the oil to leak?
Is it normal for the fan clutch to slowly leak oil after refilling? I started noticing silicone oil residue on the fan blades and shroud after I refilled mine.

Pierre....thank you! Had no idea that the fan clutch could be serviced....
good video, didn't realize you could service these.
Thank you for this info , this channel is so underrated much love from 🇲🇦
Best Mercedes advice channel. Thanks

Just installed a new Meyle clutch in my 250D. Glad I kept the old one that was free wheeling... Maybe I can bring it back to life!
Thank you for that information, great tip.
Thank you.
thanks, i have a 420sel. will check this on my vehicle
Thank you!
Thank you very much!
Very good and useful, Pierre.

Is there a specific amount of oil or do you fill till it holds no more?

Is 5000 cst the more aggressive engagement fluid, or is that normal viscosity for the fan clutch?
is it worthwhile to try draining the old fluid before refill?
How can you make sure that you are not overfilling?
Can I delete my fan clutch and just run the blade like the 240D?
I take it that my w126 420sel has a serviceable fan clutch? I have noticed when you spin the fan there is not much resistance

Luckily I didn't throw mine away from my 380sl
👍
I replaced mine with a electric fan and thermal switch out of desperation.
Hey, if it works, it works!
