Brick Pattern Cutting Board

- In my latest video, I make a Maple and Walnut brick patterned cutting board. The maple was from an old tree that fell in my back yard, so this is a fun conversation starter as well. I've been wanting to tackle this project for a while and I finally got around to completing it. I provide you with some tips for making a brick pattern cutting board based on lessons I've learned by making several cutting boards over time. You will see some of the issues I ran into and what you can do to avoid them when you build your cutting board.
Finished size:
11 1/4 inches x 17 3/4 inches x 2 inches

I really enjoy your videos! I made three different cutting boards like yours mixing end-grain and face-grain. Everyone of them checked the end-grain badly and I had to remove the face-grain. Good luck with yours and keep up the great work.

I do the same with mine I usually don't have enough stock to make the second set of strips end grain. I've heard from the purestest that you should never do this your board will fall apart and it will cause problems in the future so far so good.

Thanks Scott. Yeah my table saw is so small it won’t hold a sled which is really to bad. Do you use a sled? I’ve never used one but it looks like a game changer.

Amazing job on this beautiful cutting board. With your skills and tools you are completing some pretty & useful projects. I can’t help but think that the process you used on the cutting board would make a paneling for a small accent wall in room. It would be tons of work but it would be really eye catching. Looking forward to a Christmas project.

Can I use this technique for a decorative partition?
Just a thought, in case you ever make the same mistake and cut the end grooves first - (unfortunately I have made mistakes more than once in my projects).. Could you bring the fence out flush with the front of the bearing while cutting the radius on the ends?

Good question, I still have it and it’s working great. I should say though that I don’t use it to cut on since I have another one so it hasn’t been fully tested

Very Nice, been looking into making a brick pattern lately... won't the end grain with long grain combination result in issues like cracks or warping ?
I’m not sure. I’ve never mixed up the grain pattern before so I will for sure report back on it in future videos and once I know better I’ll update my description. Those are very likely results.
Yes!! Mixing the grain will result in the cutting board to crack. I learned this the hard way.
Could you share how this board held up after a year? Curious because of the walnut cut. Thanks!
It’s still working great. It has a lot of cuts in it from use but other than that good. Great question.

so far all i read was that the board would fall apart quickly, due to uneven contracting and expanding. i guess this maybe was a bit exaggerated
Am I wrong or did you mix edge grain walnut strips with the end grain sections? Edit: Haha....I just watched the rest of the video and saw that you knew about this..:). I will be curious to see if this board develops cracks or not. Good luck!
I will definitely let you know how it holds up. Not sure if I mentioned but even with all the sanding I can feel a ridge where the edges meet. I believe this is due to the mixed end grain for sure.

why waste so much time using 150 grit first when 50 or 80 would do the job faster and then go up the grains to the finishing grit which I use 320.
