    I wanted to thank you for all your videos. I have many projects finished thanks to your videos. I’m just finishing my first two end grain brick boards. In the mineral oil now. Also, I’m so impressed how you fit everything in such a small space. I get my comments on my garage and how I set up all my machine and tools. I always reference your setup. Thanks for everything, I really do appreciate it.

    Just did my first end grain board (black walnut and hickory - it was what I Had left over from a cabinet I made.) . Question: Of course the adhesive (Tite Bond III) wants to really suck into fibers which I fear will block out the mineral oil. I started the pieces at 1.625 knowing I would be "sanding down" to 1.5" Don't have a drum sander so using belt sander knowing I will go to random orbital at some point. (Taking a long time to reduce I think because the hickory is incredibly hard) Do you think the reduction to 1.5 from 1.625 will avoid the mineral oil not getting blocked out by adhesive? Maybe my fear is not founded. Your help / thought please.

    Beautiful boards. I watch a lot of wood working videos. People always make it look easy. But I seem to make at least one mistake!! Just finishing up my first end grain cutting board for a Christmas present 🎁. One big problem I had was getting it flat!! I do have a drum sander. My board had a twist in it. 🤨. For some reason my brain didn't ingage and it just compounded the twist. Once my brain did ingage I put it on a sled and shimed it. But I lost 3/8 off the thickness, BUMMER!!! LESSON LEARNED I GUESS. And being self taught I've had a lot of lessons!!! 🤣🤣.

    • @SixEightWoodworks
      @SixEightWoodworks  3 года назад

      Totally get that! My first end grain board I had to flatten with a router sled and lost about the same in thickness. Definitely lots of lessons encountered with trial and error.

    I am a decent woodworker yet have never made an end grain board, starting my first this weekend. I have probably watched no less than 75 videos on here about them. You are the only one that mentions alternating grains being catastrophic. Can you clarify? Were you just referring to the “mortar” strips in between the bricks? I have been watching some pretty professional woodworkers on here who don’t worry about that? I’m curious if I’m not understanding your intended message. Thanks.

    Do you think that Bosch sander one turbo mode would work in place of a drum sander until I could afford one?

    • @SixEightWoodworks
      @SixEightWoodworks  3 года назад +1

      You bet! Like I said in the video with the belt sander, it will be just be a little bit more time consuming to make sure it’s flat. If you have a great glue up without too many ridges, shouldn’t be too bad. Personally, I always have some high and low spots. So I might start with some 60 or even 40 grit to speed it up at the beginning and then switch to 80 as you’re getting closer.

    • @SixEightWoodworks
      @SixEightWoodworks  4 года назад +1

      You bet. Using just the fence solely should most always be used for rip cuts and not cross cuts. For cross cuts I add a 1/4” block to give some clearance (then account for that with the fence measurement. If you ride the fence directly for a crosscut, you are extremely likely to have a kickback. Some exceptions include plywood, if you’re pushing between the blade and fence. Also dado cuts, where you’re or fully cutting the board. I’m pretty sure Steve Ramsey over at Woodworking for Mere Mortals has some table saw safety tips that show this more clearly. Highly recommend watching that!

    • @SixEightWoodworks

      I have when I’ve added too much water while raising the grain in the summer. Important to not go too heavy and let it slowly dry. After it’s a finished board, really important it regularly gets wax. End grain absorbs water and dries out much quicker, so needs to be sealed well.
