Why not use the short map names like E1M1, E1M2 and so on? Most Doom fans know these names better than the full names anyway, like "E1M1: Hangar". It's just E1M1 to most people (Episode 1 Map 1). Great work btw. Edit: I see you've now added map names in the v1.1 update!
I think they should have got the chip VR for the genesis so more people would have bought it even if it needed two controllers if the 32x had Saturn controls.
I'd love to hear a 32X / 32X Resurection / SNES comparison video. Great job on the team that worked on this! I knew the 32X had more in it than a bordered window. Glad to see fans showed the world it's true potential.
Played through the first few stages of this yesterday. It feels like a version of the game worth playing all the way through. Phenomenal work. Great video as always.
Oh man this is what I expected when I first put that awesome looking 32x cart in my system back in the day. I hope this effort continues onto the saturn version
We were too poor to afford a PC so I got a 32X On clearance at wal mart and it got me through to my first lawn mowing job with which I saved up for my first PC thanks to Doom and Star Wars Arcade
Me to bro. I remember gathering aluminum cans, and mowing to save money to go to the fleamarket and buy 2600 games when people was abandoning Atari for Nintendo. You could score 2600 games for around 50 cents a peice. Very memorable.
Damn this channel is quickly becoming my go to for content simply based on the upload schedule. Bravo, sir. You work very hard and deserve more recognition for your efforts.
I'd love to see the developers give the same treatment to Saturn Doom... This is fantastic work :) I remember reading that a lot of it is derived from a disassembly of the Jaguar version, but not sure how true or not that is.
This is jaw dropping awesome. I kept having to tell myself I wasn't watching the PC version. What am amazing job that was done to the all time great of classic gaming.
Really impressive work! This version rivals if not surpasses the Jaguar port! If it had been the official release back in the day? The 32X story might've turned out a little differently. A port of this quality would've really shown what the hardware was capable of & raised gamer's expectations for other developers to match it.
@ammonitida SNES Doom ran on a custom engine & while the source code is out there? It might be an apples & oranges situation since it's a different engine on different hardware. Hopefully another team as talented & passionate as 32X Resurrection picks up that challenge!
I was curious about this rom hack, as my phone gave me a notification about this the other day. The 32X version was my first entry into DOOM and I must admit that while everyone rightfully hates on the music of the game, the craptastic 32X tunes always will hold a special place in my heart. I'd like to give this a go on my actual hardware some day, but I'm definitely going to check it out on emulator this weekend. Nice coverage on this update, SLX.
This is a welcomed upgrade to an already good port. I owned this game back in the day, and played the Hell out of it. I was in love with it, that is, until I got the Atari Jaguar's port, and then that became my favorite!
Wow, just imagine if Doom 32x had come out like this.. and the thing is, it could have been like this. Doom was one of the reasons I wanted a 32x as a kid but just couldn’t afford one back then. Back then it still looked amazing to me 👍🏻

Nice! I played the original 32X version back in the day and had a good time. This looks so much better. Sega rushed it out the door to beat the Jaguar version to market.

I tell them about my memories playing the games myself and how spot on (most of the time lol) you are about a game. So super appreciate the videos please keep um coming.
Such a great effort. To the original developers' credit though, it is much easier nowadays to fully utilize the hardware than it was back then. Tooling is much better today. Better compilers, communication between developers, easy access to documentation and Q&A on the Internet. Also keep in mind how much faster machines are now, which means fast compilation instead of having to wait a long time to rebuild an entire ROM, which would then have to be flash to an EEPROM. That required one heck of a long development cycle. I would not slight developer's past efforts in comparison to what ROM hackers are accomplishing today, because it is so much easier to get every bit out of the hardware now then it was back then. The comparison is unfair IMO.
The reason that the original version was so poor was due to it being rushed out the door, not lack of documentation or tools. I'm pretty sure the original devs working for Sega had much easier access to proper documentation than these guys, the 32x isn't as widely understood as the Genesis by homebrewers. Also this isn't a romhack of the 32x version, it's based off the Jaguar source.

I just played this for the first time and it's pretty incredible. The latest release fixes a lot of the issues too, such as level names being present in the level select. The default resolution is also set without the borders. I'm blown away that the 32X was capable of this all along. Back in the day I had SNES and my cousin had a Genesis & 32X. We both had Doom and argued over which version was better. I argued the SNES had all 3 episodes, more levels enemies and weapons, and that music was a million times better. Had this been what we got on 32X back then, I would not have had that same argument!

I interviewed John Romero on our podcast (InstaGamers Assemble) recently and he was speaking about how much he loves the modding scene for DOOM. He's also appearing in Gamertag Stories: Level 2 the new book sequel to Gamertag Stories. Fantastic guy.
Please give us more of these videos! I had gotten Doom with the 32x when I originally bought it (it was either that or Cosmic Carnage) and being a PC gamer as well at the time, I hated this Doom port right away. Would love to see more videos on newly enhanced ports of Saturn and 32x games.
I just had an awesome idea. Master Chief, in side-scrolling fashion. 2D backgrounds, 3D polygonal players and enemies. I now want that to be a 32x game. If that were ever to become a thing, I will play it on Kega Fusion 3.64 emulator no questions asked.
Such an amazing piece of fan dedication to the platform! I guess every Doom port on every platform back then would be so much better given the proper developmnent time and resources. Maybe we will see a polygonal Saturn port of Doom someday.
Wow! This looks like a really good port, and the music doesn’t sound like ass anymore. The music alone makes this version better. I love Doom, but always hated the 32X soundtrack.
The music is better than the original PC MIDI. There's now a patch for Brutal Doom PC source port which lets you use this music. There are countless over improvement too, from running in full screen, to full-featured enemy sprites (the original only had the front facing sprites), all of the levels, etc. Plus, it all runs at a vert playable FPS!
Funny thing. I have Spoony Bard's soundtrack not only as a WAD file to use via source ports, but the mp3 soundtrack as well. I gotta say, his work is phenomenal and definitely shows what could've been if DOOM on the 32x was given more time in development. Glad to see this exists. :)
Having spent time playing through this, I can honestly say THIS version of Doom would have made the 32X a worthy purchase back in the day. Its more-or-less the Jaguar port, but with in-game music. If Sega wasn't so damned up their own asses in needing to be first. This is the version that could have been.
"Just because a game is released in a poor, or downgraded state back then. Was in now way indicative of what the hardware is fully capable of." I agree. I mean look at the Saturn version of Doom compared to Powerslave, Duke Nukem & Quake. Lobotomy have showed how well those games can look and run on the Saturn. Doom on the Saturn would've have been much better if Carmack didn't interfere.
I played this game last night on Rasberry Pie 3 with retro pie but the original 32 X version. Even though i have the original game through steam on PC,PS3 and Switch I'll be checking this improved version soon. Thanks Sega Lord X!
I also think it depends on the music style - the FM chipset in the Genesis is great for rock soundtracks, but not as good for classical sounding music where the sample-based sound-chip in the SNES excels. Both systems could produce some great music if used well of course.
Generally yes, byt GEMS could actually produce some good results in the hands of people who actually knew what they were doing, like Tommy Tallarico. Unfortunately, most didn't. :( With the original version of Doom 32X, they just run the PC MIDI files through the GEMS auto-arranger (MIDI to FM converter) and never manually cleaned up/corrected the results. They were planning to, but ran out of time before the release date, shipping the game with the "placeholder" soundtrack.
My favourite part about this mod is that it has compatibility with the SEGA mouse. Connect that to Port 2 with a controller in Port 1 and you practically have PC Aiming. Outstanding work by the people who made this hack.
Thanks man. I couldn't figure out how to get the rom working. I didn't know you needed the EU version or how to patch it. I internally hard wired a 32x to a genesis model 2 so I only need one power supply and wanted to test it out on my mod. I figured it would work because the rest of the 32x roms did but I couldn't get it running on my flash cart. It actually looks good through the pound cable I got that outputs HDMI. I'm gonna try to go through the levels in full screen to see if I get any crashes. Thanks again for showing me how to patch it. Keep it up, I enjoy your content.
OMG me too! I never thought it was as bad as everyone says. I like the ultra deep bass sounds. Having said this, the SNES version admittedly destroys the original 32X Doom in the music department.
Wow what an upgrade! This would have been a real system seller had the 32x port been this good from day one. Can't wait to fire this up! Nice work guys!
There seems to be a bit of misinformation going around. This isn't a hack of the 32x version, it's a version based on the released Jaguar source code running on the 32x. A huge amount of effort went into getting this running on the 32x so well so seeing people call this a simple romhack is a bit of a shame.
Pretty sure that all of the 32-bit ports back in those days were based on the Jag version source already. It's is a rom hack in a sense that it's a patch applied to the original ROM. If it was a full remake (on the same hardware), it wouldn't be needing the original ROM. Doesn't diminish what they achieved here in any way though. Amazing work all around.
@@Prizrak-hv6qk This version isn't a hack of the original rom though. The only reason you need the original rom is for the assets, though many of the Jaguar exclusive assets are in the patch. The patch was created as a difference.
the sega community of developers is awesome.. we see all these great improvement hacks for street fighter, doom, mortal kombat, etc.. and new games that look great. like Demons of Asterborg, and that new Megaman trilogy.

I'm playing this on the PS Classic/Retroarch. They absolutely nailed it, it's much smoother than PSX Doom and the always run option is glorious. Not to mention save states and L/R strafing.
Me too. I rented a 32X along with Doom and I was very disappointed. I didn't expect it to be better than the PC, but I expected it to be better than it was. Of course... if Doom was better, I may have pissed away $150 on a 32X, so blessing in disguise maybe?
@@oleblue73 You should've just waited like a year or so when the 32X was in the discount bin for $20. Say what you will about the 32X, but it seriously had the best ports of MKII and NBA Jam around, and Blackthrone was pretty dope too.

Carmack himself coded this, camped out at Sega of America. He must've been seriously short on time (thanks, Sega), but did a great job despite the constraints. I wonder how much more performance he would've extracted from the hardware, given a little more time?

I just had an awesome idea. Master Chief, in side-scrolling fashion. 2D backgrounds, 3D polygonal players and enemies. I now want that to be a 32x game. If that were ever to become a thing, I will play it on Kega Fusion 3.64 emulator no questions asked.
Such an amazing piece of fan dedication to the platform! I guess every Doom port on every platform back then would be so much better given the proper developmnent time and resources. Maybe we will see a polygonal Saturn port of Doom someday.
Ty for making this video and please continue to make rom hack videos, didn't know this even existed!
Dude, your prayers have been heard.

This look amazing! Nice job to these developers and awesome content as always SLX!
"Just because a game is released in a poor, or downgraded state back then. Was in now way indicative of what the hardware is fully capable of."
I agree. I mean look at the Saturn version of Doom compared to Powerslave, Duke Nukem & Quake. Lobotomy have showed how well those games can look and run on the Saturn.
Doom on the Saturn would've have been much better if Carmack didn't interfere.
I'm still hoping against hope that someday we will get the full rom dump of that canceled Xmen game for 32X.
I could easily see this version contend with the Jaguar and even Saturn ports. Props to everyone involved with the project!
I played this game last night on Rasberry Pie 3 with retro pie but the original 32 X version. Even though i have the original game through steam on PC,PS3 and Switch I'll be checking this improved version soon. Thanks Sega Lord X!
This version shows what can be done without time constraints and a limited game size.
Man If the gems driver never existed there would never be an argument over genesis sound quality. Genesis music is amazing when effort was applied.
I've been waiting and hoping for something like this to happen!
Thanks for covering this, SLX. Great video. 😊
The biggest and best change has to be that the enemies don't constantly face you anymore and you can run all the time :)
My god, the new soundtrack is AMAZING.
I still have a brand new Sega 32x and games with receipts from video games heaven back in 94.
I loved this system.
Loved MK2
the monsters in Doom 32x always faced towards you, so they wouldn't fight each other. it made it the hardest one by far.
They fixed that here.
Am I the only one who has a soft spot for the original 32x music? I mean, I know it's objectively terrible but I still enjoy the hell out of it ;)
OMG me too! I never thought it was as bad as everyone says. I like the ultra deep bass sounds. Having said this, the SNES version admittedly destroys the original 32X Doom in the music department.
Just makes the Saturn port look all the more unforgiveable when you can see the raw performance on display here. Wow.
Thank you... I mean one more idiot calls this a hack...
@@Prizrak-hv6qk I guess you have a point. I don't know why it needs to do that. I guess I can ask Chilly.

I had this game back then. The only game I have ever bought for my 32X. I can't complain though. 32X did me a big favor. Made me buy a Playstation. One of my best gaming decisions ever.
Doom 32x was the first way I was able to experience Doom. I enjoyed it and played it a lot. It held me over until the Playstation version came out.
OH
MY
GOD!
THANK YOU FOR SHOWING US THIS UPDATE!!!
I have been hoping for a doom mod on 32x forever!!! Thank-you and thanks to the guys that made this possible!!
On a related note, would you consider talking about Megaman the sequel wars? This project is shaping up to be EXTRAORDINARY!!!
I'm playing this on the PS Classic/Retroarch. They absolutely nailed it, it's much smoother than PSX Doom and the always run option is glorious. Not to mention save states and L/R strafing.
This looks awesome X thanks for sharing
I was fortunate and had it on PC 🥰
Say what you will about the 32X, but it seriously had the best ports of MKII and NBA Jam around, and Blackthrone was pretty dope too.
that looks sounds and seems to play amazing! the team did a great job. i loved doom when i got to play it for the first time on my 32x. i really need to try this version and actually complete the game, instead of getting that screen at the end. i think it was a command prompt
Who else would buy a cartridge release?
100%
This morning I burnt the Doom 2016 soundtrack to a CD. Makes an amazing experience while playing this game.
Hard to believe that the 32x original port of Doom is vastly superior to the more powerful Sega Saturn port. Crazy world we live in.
This must have been a total passion project, I mean 32X... hmm that's long gone
This is nice. 32x had so much potential. Now, i want this in cartridge form.
Carmack himself coded this, camped out at Sega of America. He must've been seriously short on time (thanks, Sega), but did a great job despite the constraints. I wonder how much more performance he would've extracted from the hardware, given a little more time?
