I’ve actually done race walk races and it’s extremely hard. I go to William Penn University and I’m on the track team here and since we’re are in the NAIA instead of the NCAA, race walking is an actual event. I did the 3k racewalk at my conference championship for indoor season and finished 9th in the conference. The training absolutely destroys your shins and after about 250m of the race you feel a constant burn up your legs. The training is just like any other distance runner besides you walk instead of run. I did 800m repeats walking, 200m intervals, it’s very similar. The worst part is the judges. I got to two fouls during the championships and it’s extremely scary knowing if I plant my leg wrong and buckle at the knee or push off to hard and lift off the ground for a fraction of a second near a judge, it could all be for nothing. It’s an awesome sport that looks goofy but people should definitely look into

There are 4 fcking ways to swim, and u get shocked when you see a different way of advancing on earth other than running? I believe that in the rest of the world outside U.S. this sport is much more recognised.
Jorge Gatcan And another way is crawling. Or skipping. Or rolling along he ground. Why aren't they Olympic events? I don't agree with those other swimming strokes either. As far as I'm concerned it should be about the fastest way to cover distance on foot or by swimming, not introducing ridiculous ways so those that can't keep up in the serious event can have a shiny medal too. I'm outside the US, and 'racewalking' is openly mocked where I am, as it should be.
Reuben Allan Exactly. Why don't we have bike races where they don't get to have a seat, or where they have to sit backwards on the crossbar while they try to pedal and see where they're going.
I can see how walking in a straight line naturally gives your hips the sway. Good example are runway models, those with less bouncy walks keep their torsos straight and put one foot in front of the other.
First time I saw this sport was during the evening 2008 Olympics. It was like 2 in the morning and I flipped over to NBC and saw the strangest people in a line. Being so late I could not tell if I was dreaming or not. I continued watching until I fell asleep. I never seen the sport again until this vid. Anyways a debate about the differences between running and walking sparsely come up between me and my friends. No one seems to understand that running is practically jumping on one leg or quick successive leaps
I agree. They explained what 230.2 is but not the actual number 230.2. It could very well be 453.5 and it still makes sense because they didn't explain the number.
Ciera, 230.2 means "rule 230, section 2". It's right in the video at the 2:05 mark... it gets explained right after they mention it. That rule *defines* the sport, that's why it's "the number" (of the rule relevant).
My uncle was a winner in a few race walking competitions. My other uncle was a track star. Both my parents did sports back in Kenya...mom did field hockey. Can't remember what dad did. But I think they also did track. And there is me. Growing up people would ask me if im a runner..was it because I was Kenyan...or I...looked like I would be a good runner? All I know is I hated running and would come in almost last, if not dead last in our mile races we had to do every few months in school. My fastest mile was in HS, at like 9:36. LOL. The only other best ive had was doing a 6 mile bike trail in under 15 minutes, months before it took me 45 minutes and was pure torture, lol. Now 34...some reason, they were in my recommends, I just began watching these track and field competitions...first time I ever watched Usain Bolt, WOW JUST WOW, and there are a whole lot of Kenyans I didnt even know we compete in these races lol! Anyway...im feeling a motivated to get into some training...I have always wanted to win a charity run (do you win those?lol) and always wanted to compete in at least one of those obstacle course events they have...like Spartan!
Barry Klonsky your correct they are not “walking” they are race walking, two completely different things all together. if the rules are a joke, why is race walking in the olympics. this is a very disrespectful comment especially to direct at a race walk like me who is friends with multiple olympic race walkers
When we were kids, Me and my friends would go for a walk, and suddenly we would start a walking competition. And I was the winner most of the time. Only if I had known that this is a recognized sports at Olympics lol, I wouldn't have stopped playing this game XD
Dude same with my brother and sister, although one day I just started using my hips, danm I left them I'm the dust, they started jogging, this was when I was like 5
When I was at school I was a pretty decent sprinter (county/district standard) and went to a training camp at Loughborough university, while I was there we met a guy who the British walking champion, he was training for the 1980 Olympic Games, and I’ll tell you we were jogging to keep up with him!
I did race walking for fun today at my track meet and came first, I did well enough that I might be going to provincials, this is honestly a really fun activity
If you guys have ever wondered how strict they are with the rules, in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Jane Saville was leading in the last 100 meters of a 20km racewalking event and they disqualified her for lifting. It was especially rough because Saville was a lifelong Sydney resident and was representing Australia
I did sports in highschool and I tried this one, other than my long distance track race. It was really hard. Our body must be really be well warmed up. Especially the hip and legs. And we have to be flexible enough. The rules for this race is really strict. There's a term in this race called 'Floating', if you do that, you're out right away, even when you're not finished yet. At least, that was what I experienced. I remember I only took that race once because I injured my leg after that. My hip got dislocated. I over warmed up my body before the race.😅 That's as painful as my broken arm.😂
Guys almost all of you are making fun of racewalkers... Just try to speak to some of them... Almost all of them are very chill and kind person's. All of them are training 2-4 hours a day just to become better. Sometimes it's even longer. This sport has been around since the beginning of the new Olympic Games (1904)

There are 4 fcking ways to swim, and u get shocked when you see a different way of advancing on earth other than running? I believe that in the rest of the world outside U.S. this sport is much more recognised.
Jorge Gatcan there's like a hundred different ways to ride a bike :/
My country won it’s first olympic medal in this event in the 1920s i think...mby in the 1930...i’m from Latvia btw
I can see how walking in a straight line naturally gives your hips the sway. Good example are runway models, those with less bouncy walks keep their torsos straight and put one foot in front of the other.
Why race walk? Because it's FABULOUS you silly goose!
oh my god lmao
Qualifying rounds for top competitions include coming out to your parents.
this is so inspiring!! I want to become a professional race walker!
4:17 "bicycler's drift" lmao, "cyclists draft" you mean?
Yeah I thought that too, why the hell did he say drift.
Hal from Malcolm in the Middle anyone? 😂😂
I miss that show 😭
I miss that show 😭
Haha
you beat me to it... first thing I thought of.
Monkeybox Gaming XD
Um actually Malcolm in the Middle already taught me all this
Lol oh yea!!!
When the teacher said "no running in the hallways"
me and my friends just continued playing tag like this
Lol, anyone watched Malcolm In The Middle?
Hal in that tracksuit, lol
you made my day good man
good times
Hahaha, that's the only thing I can ever think of, when someone's talking about race walking
One of the best shows ever.
Vox by far has the best youtube of any news corporation.
They never explained why 230.2 is a relevant number?
it is called looking at the video. It is shown right as they say it.
I agree. They explained what 230.2 is but not the actual number 230.2. It could very well be 453.5 and it still makes sense because they didn't explain the number.
Kieran Yeah I saw the paper and it didn’t explain what the number was
Ciera, 230.2 means "rule 230, section 2".
Anyway...im feeling a motivated to get into some training...I have always wanted to win a charity run (do you win those?lol) and always wanted to compete in at least one of those obstacle course events they have...like Spartan!
you just described sports in a way that honestly gave me more interest in them
I only know about this from malcom in the middle 😂😂😂
Legend says if you are this early Vox will reply.
legends were wrong
+Legit Name hahaha *tears
how's that working for u
another legend says that if you ask a good question to vox they'll repy, but it sounds like bullshit to me
+Tauras Jurgutis that was mean and unnecessary
This was well put together and very knowledgeable insight, good job guys 👌🏾
1:26 "Both her feet are in the air!" - Hal
Go home guys, race walking's over.
But that was through a camera eye, not the human eye like the rule states.
@@sidshaw1927 they are not walking; the "rules" are a joke; should be eliminated from Olympics
Barry Klonsky And you are a certified racewalking judge who can tell the difference? I thought not. Nice try though
Barry Klonsky your correct they are not “walking” they are race walking, two completely different things all together. if the rules are a joke, why is race walking in the olympics. this is a very disrespectful comment especially to direct at a race walk like me who is friends with multiple olympic race walkers
This is professional Ace Ventura walking.
Glad I watched this, because google searches & articles were not helping me at all in understanding this sport! 👍
This is incredible. Is it in this year's Olympics? I want to know where I can watch (and laugh) at them omg
People in school: runs down hallways
Teacher: chooses me out of 20 students to go all the way back
You guys have come a long way since this
Mom: you should be a scientist when you grow up
Me:
When the lifeguard says "no running"
Does this sneak into their every day steps? Without realizing it they turn their hips and bend their arms at the grocery store?
I did race walking for fun today at my track meet and came first, I did well enough that I might be going to provincials, this is honestly a really fun activity
School: no running in the hallways
Speed walkers: Uno reverse card
Now I can’t unsee the leg straightness and it’s making me feel like I’m hyperextending my knees 😬😬
"I was not walking. I was POWER walking."
-Cpt. Raymon Holt
NINE NINE!
Hal taught me the entirety of the sport, thanks tho.
I race people everyday down the sidewalks of SF
Time to go pro
I'll print out a bib number to attach to my shirts
I raced walked 21.1 km in 1 hour and 47 minutes. My 20 km time was 1 hour and 42. It was a fun time! 18 minutes away from Olympic standards.
Well, I'm lazy af, this is the sport for me! 😂
My sport would be more like Eating, or play a sport game
Vemund Langaas 😂😂
It looks slow but to an average runner this dudes/dudettes who race walk are deceptively fast. they might look like they are walking but they are walking as fast as normal people run tbh
...walking as quickly as you can for 20 km? Yeah, the perfect sport for a lazy person.
@ less than 7min/mile pace, that's way faster than the average person can 'RUN'. It's a lot harder than you think to maintain that pace.
Tsunami coming!
Them: Just keep walking, Just keep walking
Answer to the age old question. Well done mate good research.
"It's like watching the Gods return to Olympus..."
~♫♪ at night...i think of you...♪♫~
wtf ?
How is this relevant to the video?
Bet you don't know the actual name of the song or who did the song...
oh my god, you all are idiots. shes referencing the running man challenge, it kind of looks like the people walking.
because the race walking looks like the running man challenge
As a distance runner, if my coach tried to convince me to compete in this, I'd be the first person ever to be DQed for running
When you wanna rush to the bathroom but it says no running.
That's the best videp I could have found today. Made my day
This reminds me of the episode of Malcom in the middle when Hal does fast walking 😂
yesssss that was my favorite episodeeee
The reporters sound like they're doing their best to not laugh.😂
