  • Great Lakes Maritime Institute hosted the program at the Dossin Museum in Detroit. The program started with a Lamp lighting ceremony held at the anchor of the "Fitz" located in the yard of the Museum. The ceremony was followed by a talk from Capt. Don Erickson who searched for the Fitzgerald on Lake Superior the night of the loss. The ceremony marked the 28th Anniversary of the loss of the Edmund Fitzgerald on Lake Superior at approx. 7:00 pm November 10, 1975. Viewers from across the country were able to submit questions to the speaker online.

Outstanding presentation - what a thrill to have Captain Erickson re-live his experiences during the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald. His experiences prior to Great Lakes sailing were notable. Among his military decorations were a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart, Navy Good Conduct Medal + various campaign medals and ribbons. Thank you for your service Captain & GBU from an Old Coastie.

Why they haven't made a big budget film to HONOR these brave men (incl the ones who went back out to search for the Fitz) I'll never understand...it's a story that deserves to be told.

Would love to have known which storm(s) Captain Erickson thought WERE the worst he ever encountered in his career- I was just curious, as he states that the one that sunk the Fitz was REALLY bad, but not the worst he experienced. It’s really a great opportunity to learn from the wisdom of our elders while we still have them w/us.😊

Sad that Michigan had such a rich history of ship building that is now gone, Big business no longer has any public responsibility to the people that buy their products, ever since the loss of another Fitzgerald in another November 1963

So she was over loaded, beat up badly in need of major repairs, pushing hard in following seas, lost his radar completelyblown off the ship, lost half of his communication antennas, 2 vents gone, starboard rail was down, caught in possibly the worst storm ever on Lake Superior, was way to close to 6 fathom soal, using charts from 1919, and hit by 2 Rouge waves in succession, (those two wave were the tallest Bernie had ever seen. The timing from those lifting his stern nearly out of the water and hitting the Fitz was the exact time to put her out of sight and off the radar)😮 taking on water with only one pump running for unknown reason! Dont forget the way those pellets are shaped easily could have plugged half of the screen on the old style pump inlets on the Fitzgerald. Could that be why only one pump was pumping out water that night?
If you think it was aliens, some triangle, or any other supernatural reason she went down instantl my friends, look again.
The captain was in a hurry due to his wifes being admitted into a nursing home the day before, and it was the last unscheduled run of the year. He was known to have pushed her hard, setting various records and had several collisions during his time a master of the Fitz.
To me its obvious and it should be to you as well what sank the Mighty Pride of the fleet, like so manybyimes when something like this happens it a combination of several things, not just one that make it happen.
But if hed have slowed down staying closer to Bernie Coppers ship, with sight and his radar, Mc Sorely wouldnt have been pushed up north to close to the shoals, breaking her keel on those rocks and there by causing the water to flood the cargo holds.
That was the reason the Fitz took the nose dive, hitting the bottom, cracking in half when it hit driving the bow over 20 feet into the lake bed.
She just couldnt float any longer! Gordon lightfoots song will immortalize the Fitzgerald forever, its haunting and a appropriate send off. R.I.P. All those who went down on the Great lakes.

I think it's absolutely insulting to the crew of the Edmund Fitzgerald to think that they didn't know about the list and all the problems and it's a insult to captain mcsorely . They knew and were trying to save there lives to get to safe harbor.these guys knew they were in trouble. This whole story makes me sick. The fitz knew they were in one hell of a mess. They should of dropped anchor

What brave men they were. And of course not one word about how Mcsorley put them all at risk with his careless and childish behavior being out in that weather for no good reason at all. The Fitz was not the rock steady boat many make it out to be. It definitely had its safety issues due to this type of behavior again and again. Still, his brothers put themselves last and risked their lives where none of it was required at all. 100 percent Mcsorelys fault.

I agree w/you 100%…it’s the captain who has the FINAL say & Captain Erickson is an excellent model of wisdom, self-control, & good judgement in taking the broad view of what’s safe for his vessel & his crew, plus weighing anchor when the weather is BAD. Of course, those pushing lake captains who don’t have the same kind of backbone & integrity as Erickson are also responsible. As in McSorely who succumbed to the pressure of those from whom he collected a paycheck.

It wasn't Morley's fault. Can't really do anything when you are literally caught out in the middle of lake superior and this is exactly what happened to the Anderson and Mcsorley. It's the largest and deepest glacier freshwater lake located anywhere on the planet. Where you gonna run? You aren't traverse 237 miles back through these storms back to the twin ports harbor, you aren't gonna traverse 114 miles to the south shore which is infested with Rocky shoals as is the northshore. you most definitely aren't gonna attempt swinging such a large vessel and risk getting caught within the troughs of 60 70 ft waves which will undoubtedly capsize the vessel. The sea return within lake superior is truly off the charts and The wash alone is a force to be reckoned with, this is just what I've seen shoreside during my 47+ years of living within the twin ports region and the further out you get the worse it is.
The cliffs on the south shore of lake superior ( Wisconsin ) get relentlessly slammed by 30-40 ft waves ( washes the cliffs out ) this is just the outcome shore side.. The deeper the depths the more substantial the waves and sea return.
