Watch next! I also reviewed the OM System TG7 tiny tough camera on this trip. It's a beaut! : ruclips.net/video/QMAoZlV1JQo/видео.htmlsi=QMJdsYnwSxQsfRuY
I love watching videos like this that show just how capable old digital cameras are still today, and then go on to read some RUclips whiners crying about how they just can't get the shots they want because the latest mega-tech camera isn't even *more* amazing than it is already. Love your work!
I bought my GH1 back in 2009 along with the 14-140, 20/1.7, 45/2.8 macro, and 100-300 over the next 12 months. There were lots of lens announcements, but they actually came available in the shops in dribs and drabs throughout the year. There website went big on the colors (I think the big image at the top was the gold version) but I never saw any color other than black in the wild. I think the colors were mostly popular in Japan and Asia. I remember the EVF was quite bad in very low light, but I got great pictures in the dark with the Voigtländer 25mm f0.95. I loved the camera so much I upgraded to the GH2 as soon as it came out. That was the time of people sharing hacking recipes online, and indie filmmakers going crazy for the camera. The GH1 and 2 sit beside each other on my shelf. These days I use the GH5 II, GH5s, and dream of the GH7... one day
An old magic wand still has magic...especially in the hands of a master magician! Once again, Emily's provided us with a master class in the art of photography with old magic wands...cameras.😂 Anyone can click the shutter, but Emily shares the thought process that can transform a flat scene into a vivid memory! My old G1 has shown me some of the magic that Emily has so artfully described. Get an old magic wand and create your own magic!👍
Oooh, I LOVE these kinds of videos...giving love to old goats. I still haven't dared to buy from that site. If I had more time, I'm certainly as daring possibly as you but so excited that you do this...also, I'm from Greek descent, so this video of you being in the area is extra exciting!
I saw the thumb nail and was like, no way! I picked up a GH1 the whole of about 10 days ago (Red version) and no regrets. I too was surprised by the AF having owned a GH3 in the past, and the Jpegs out of camera are lovely for such a old camera. I like the focus mode switch on the left to save from digging in menus and it's a plastic body, but without wishing to sound weird, it's a silky plastic which is nice to hold. The battery life seems good so far too! Thanks Emily, always enjoy your videos :)
Lovely. It reminds me of my DMC-G3, which I bought as my first MFT. The material of the body looks very similar, it's just a different colour. Mine is chocolate brown, which looks great with this material.
Beautiful location! I do love your edits. I've been living at 43 degrees C during the day in Vegas for the last few weeks. It's 21:00 and still 36 degrees C. So yeah, I feel your pain. Safe travels.
Apologies if I missed you mentioning it, but I think it’s worth mentioning that the GH1 and GH2 are the only m43 cameras I know of with slightly oversized sensors so you can use different aspect ratios with the same sized diagonal on the image!
Enjoyed ur vlogg on older mft, I still use my Olympus omd 10 great little camera like u say light weight and on small prime lenses makes great sense. Have a great holiday Gerry. 0:20
I found a GH1 on the local junkyard a year ago with the cardslot door a bit broken and couldn't imagine it would still be working... but also couldn't resist giving it a try. So here I am, with a fresh battery and just 2k shutter counts on mine (so almost mint shutter). Emily, do you happen to know where to find replacement parts like the cardslot door? I did not find anything on the interwebs, yet. And like you, Emily, I love the colors coming out of it. As long as it's not high ISO shooting. :) This is really where the age shows... ISO 1600 is unusable and with no IBIS, you can basically only use it with a tripod in darker scenes. :) But for daytime, all the way!
I still have the exact same combination, GH1+20mm, and its stunning how capable this is nowadays. Could you show up your camera settings in the pictures (aperture, ISO and time) in your future vids? This would be extremly inspiering. Cheers
Great video. I love the energy of your content. I bought a G1 for six quid on ebay. When i got the old cover gunk off it, itworked beautifully with a 14-42 pz lens. I just got sunburnt in Cumbria!
Good one, I have most of the GFs and G series cameras (have traded or sold off the current crop, too much money to have on the shelf) but have never owned a GH model. Cant recall if you have done a video on the GF1, but if you havent, it is very well worth a punt. Basically a GH1 in a pocketable format and reasonable fully speced as well.
My G2 is very similar and I'd agree you can get some lovely images from such a cheap camera. I prefer it to my G3 because of the selection of buttons on the body. As long as you have a stabilised lens it's happy days:)
I remember selling my G2 to buy the G3 and being so bitterly disappointed. I failed to check the specs and didn't realise they had removed the auto switch to EVF. Total deal breaker. I had to go and plead with the camera shop to take back the G3.
@@Russellhawker yes that was a funny decision removing the sensor. When I've used the G3 i kept the screen folded away and just left it on the evf only. I bought the G3 almost free for the cost of the kit lens i was buying for the G2 so it didn't matter what it was like but it was interesting to compare the two cameras and shows what good value cameras are out there and still very useable quality.
I bought a GF1 together with a 20/1.7 for about 70€ because I wanted the lens. This combination is great fun and if carefully exposed the images are surprisingly good. Battery life lasts basically forever. I have it with my while cycling because at the pricepoint I wouldn't be too upset if it breaks one day.
Thanks for your ongoing tips and sharing about M43 first! If possible, could you also share of your experience by using Buyee and shopping used cameras from Japan directly? Thanks in advance!
My main camera is still my gh2 I got when it was new. Yes, I keep it with negative exposure comp on in bright conditions. I wish it had ibis, focus peaking, better evf and some better high iso performance. The size is absolutely perfect (about the same size as older manual 35mm slrs like my Nikon fe2). I'm due for an upgrade but I can't stand the size of a lot of new cameras and more so the lenses!
Always look forward to Emily’s videos. What new toy will she be playing with? Where in the world will Emily travel to? I am an accidental camera collector. I buy and use cameras. When I buy a newer camera I don’t sell the old model. Sometimes I gift the bodies. Never the lenses. I marry the lenses. Right now the sweet spot for me is six year old cameras. Good enough features. Sensor density about 16MP. IBIS still pretty good. Prices are alright. Just purchased backup GX85 & 9 bodies. The G9 is still a winner. Can’t believe what a bargain it is. Love these cameras. Small. Lightweight. Highly performant. Both handicapped by lack of microphone input. Why LUMIX? In particular, love the L monochrome D JPEG. My FAVORITE B&W file. Looking for a GX8. Let me give you some Olympus love. EMD1 Mii with 12-40 pro lens. The subsequent models have incremental improvements. Bang for the buck the 1 ii is a winner. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
Lovely photographs. I have a Panasonic G5 that I bought for $169.00 dollars with a 14-42mm pancake lens. About eighty pounds. It takes great photos but not good for video.
The G5 is a hidden gem. Got it for cheap, in a white version. Nice Grip. Perfect to work with the 20mm pancake or M42 old lenses. I like it better than the GX9 !
They're very very similar. I think if you go down the route of wanting to hack the camera, you can squeeze more video performance out of the gh2, but for photos they're pretty much identical
I'm going to write a blog tutorial soon, but the software is called PTool and it can only be used on Windows. If you Google "PTool GH1" you should find it 😊
One has an "H" in the name. But seriously, I think originally when the G1 came out, there was no video. The h in GH I believe stands for hybrid in that it can do both video and stills. I believe the GH series was always their flagship m43 camera and the gh2 was so good for video at the time that it was used for shooting commercial things like tv shows. After that, Panasonic decided to make the gh3 as a video specific powerhouse and has followed the formula since. The regular g series even though they have video take a backseat to the GH series. Many of the g series are known as lite versions of the GH series like the G6 to the gh3, g7 and g85 to the gh4, etc but less featured less powerful, and plastic builds. After the Gh5 came out which I think was their first camera that could do 4k no crop whereas the g series all have crop in 4k. Actually the g95 might have a worse crop than the g85 because of it's 20mp sensor. Though the g9 is the only g series camera to break the g series mold but that's because in reality the g9 is a "pro" camera. I think it's called the g9 pro in Japan. The g9 is on par with the GH series in most areas but instead is their stills flagship.
@@ToolCrazeI remember when the G1 came out, I was excited, wow electronic viewfinder, so good for video, I had been waiting for this. But was very disappointed when I found out it did appear not to have video. Why they made a camera with electronic viewfinder and no video, I was asking myself.
I kind of feel like the camera that comes after the GH2 is the G7. Nice lite weight camera. When they went with the GH3 they started making cameras heaver.
Unrelated, but did you know about the SwitchLens on Kickstarter (the campaign just finished)? Similar mobile phone bolt-on like the Alice Camera, but 20MP with either a 1in or M43 sensor (Sony) and compatible with M43 lenses. Didn't you do an Alice video long ago?
The earlier Lumix cameras were made in Japan. The quality for the Japan made cameras does make a difference and that is probably why it is still working well after all these years. Please hunt down a GF1 as well.
I think the contrast auto focus works good for video in 720p and 1080i and 1080p. My GH2 camera the auto focus is not that bad for video. Its not as good as what newer cameras can do but its not bad like how people talked about the GH4 and GH5 and GH6 for video. I think those cameras are doing a lot more pushing 4k and you need a very fast CPU to handle all of that.
