Those Seattle Autumn photos were very pleasant. Glass floor at the top of a tall tower... less pleasant. But that's me.
I could say I got the 7A body cap lens for my OM-5 for this purpose; but the problem with an EDC is that I need to be somewhere to justify the use of an EDC, which hasn't happened much with a month of cover shifts in cold & flu season. So my EDC has been my phone, but even that implies I've been snapping away with it. 🥴

I'm loving the OM-D E-M5 with the 17mm f/1.8. I did add the Fotodiox metal grip, not for the grip on the front so much as it added just a touch more height so my pinky has a place to go. That 17mm is perfect for street, and love the MF clutch so I can quickly go MF with a preset distance for that "Ricoh GR snap focus" effect. Brilliant little street camera and I might like it more than my M240 at the moment.

My everyday ILC camera is usually my Pentax Q7, but a lot of the time, lately, I've been carrying an old Pentax point and shoot (the VS 20) in daylight because I love the pocketability and the way the CCD sensor images look really appeals to me at this moment in my life.

I wish Panasonic (or OM) would release a modern small body again. At the moment it's all giant, heavy, expensive bodies at prices where most people may as well just get a full frame mirrorless camera unless they are a professional with a particular niche where smaller lenses are needed.
Stuff like the GM / GF series and the old Olympus Pen E-P series are what brought a lot of us to m4/3.

I don't get this idea that somehow one should give up the size and weight advantages of MFT just because an OM-1 or G9II body with industry leading tech costs what a mid-range FF body without much if any of that tech costs. I have no interest in ever lugging around lenses that weigh far more, are far larger, and have half the reach.
Heaving said that, I would love to see both a high end range-finder MFT body like a PEN F II or a GX-something with an EVF. Also, there should be a mid-range body also with EVF.

I want a 3.5mm audio jack for my small Panasonic body! Since there are so many video features having the jack would be great and wouldn’t threaten the G or GH body sales.

@gregfeeler6910 because the newer bodies aren't that much smaller anymore, the benefit comes primarily from the lenses but some fairly small very capable lenses are available for aps-c. I just switched to MFT but I bought older cameras because of the size. If I wasn't such a sucker for the lens selection that I realistically will never use, I could have stuck with an aps-c camera with one or two lenses. MFT has it's place but they're making it harder on themselves by not providing the tiny bodies to boast about.

There can never be enough GX8 videos! It’s still my favourite despite all its limitations, there’s just something about it that makes you want to grab it and use it. I’m most often pairing mine with the SLR Magic 25mm T0.95 cine lens, it matches the body really well and gives such a nice dreamy look to the photos. Btw. as a tall person I many times use the tilting viewfinder in order to be able to shoot from a more normal perspective :D If I held the camera straight to my eye I’d aim over everything unless I either point the camera slightly downwards or crouch, neither of which is usually ideal. So for me the tilting viewfinder is actually often quite useful :D

Thanks for another great video, Emily. I worked my backwards to the GX8 after being a GX9 user for the past 5 years since that camera's release in 2018. Following problems with my GX9 after being caught in a heavy shower, I decided I needed a weatherproof alternative and bought a used GX8 from MPB earlier this year, mainly as a back-up. But once I started using it, I realised what I had been missing with its superior ergonomics (I love that grip - and the excellent EVF). The result is role reversal with the GX9, which I still love using but is now serving more as a 2nd camera body, with the GX8 taking over as the constant companion, especially for travel. It is also feels far better balanced than the GX9 with larger lenses, including my Lumix Leica 12-60 or 14-140mm II. As I get older I find that SLR style cameras are too bulky and inconvenient for me to carry around and I sold my old G9 a while ago. I have neither the will nor the budget to consider the G9ii (I don't need a hybrid as I don't shoot video). Like others here - I really wish Panasonic (and/or OM Systems) would turn their attention towards producing a GX10 (or PEN F II) equivalent, taking advantage of technical advances but keeping the form factor. In the meantime, please keep posting about the GX8 - it will be fascinating to see what results you get.

      @martingreenberg870 8 месяцев назад +1

Like @bobstephenson956 I backed into the GX8. I started with the GX85 which I liked very much. Early last year upgraded to the GX9 and kit P12-60mm lens. Last month purchased the GX8 @ a local camera store for $400. So far I don’t know if I prefer the GX9 vs the GX8. Last weekend I purchased the 20mm pancake lens. No more cameras or lenses for a while.
Amen to a GX10. Upgrade the GX8 with phase detection. A full size audio jack (3.5mm) would be nice too. Better IBIS and IBIS that works when shooting 4K video would be nice too.

I found the same thing about EVFs! I live in the Inland Northwest, which is quite bright--especially compared to where I grew up in Seattle. I bought a Fuji X-M1, and within a year realized that I needed an EVF for composition. I was getting so annoyed at missing horizon straightness, visual rhythm compositions, and so many awkward edges. So, I picked up a X-T20. LOVE both cameras, but I can only shoot with the X-T20 most days. I thought it was just the old 2013 panel on the X-M1--but based on what you said, I think it might just be the sun. Thanks for another great video filled with fantastic photos and interesting thoughts.

Being old, I like an EVF vs. the LCD screen. One reason I’m not a Ricoh GRiii fan. To give that body it’s due, for this series, it may be the king of small cameras.

I think the GX8 is a superb camera but... although its EVF and grip are far better than the GX9, and it is weather sealed, I do prefer the GX9 for street photography. It is smaller, a little lighter, has a tilting monitor and much better IBIS, together with a sensor without an AA filter. I also think some of the controls on the GX9 are better positioned and cannot be pressed inadvertently. With that said, for many settings other than street photography, I'll pick up the GX8 with a 14-140mm lens, and the firmware update seems to deal with the reported shutter shock.

I looked at the GX8 for a walk around camera but I wasn't crazy about some of the limitations of the older camera. I considered the GX9, but didn't want to pay that much for a walk around camera. I ran into a deal on E-Bay for the G95 with a lens I planned on buying anyway and the bundle was just $200 more than the lens itself would be. The G95 is only slightly larger and heavier than the Gx8, plus it is a much newer camera with good video capabilities and bonus features like live composite that I don't even have in my newer GH6. Paired with my 8-18 lens it works great. But I am considering a 12-35 2.8 or the 12-60 2.8-4.0 lens as the ultimate walk around combo. The Olympus 12-200 could also be interesting.

I did not enjoy the experience much - I just got a bit light headed, and not in a good way.

Just yesterday it was reported that OM System is making a “very high end” camera, possibly an OM-1X. While this is great for the M43 market and wildlife shooters, it does not fit with my interests. OM, in particular, seems fixated on the “REI ad” or “Nat Geo assignment” aesthetic.

I have noticed of late, that M4/3 cameras seem to be getting, shall we say, larger in the girth and heavier with it. Even some of the pro lenses are not the tiny light weight things that they used to be. For me, the smaller light weight cameras and lenses is what M 4/3 should be what it is about.

Thank you Panasonic for including an audio jac in ANY GX body. It seems nuts, to me, such a little body with all this video goodness I hoveled by the audio jac lack. The GX line doesn’t compete with the GH bodies. Hope the next GX body has a 3.5mm audio in jac plus phase detection. I’d buy that in a nano second.

Being a huge fan of viewfinder shooting, the GX8 gives me the chance to get almost a TLR feel to the images. It also makes it easy to get the low angle shots without resorting to the washed out screen. (My eyesight also loves it much better). The GX8 is my go to for travel and at times event photography. I own both the GX 85 and GX nine. The GX9 is an incremental improvement over the GX 85. 16 megapixels versus 20 megapixels. I can’t see the difference. The GX9 has slightly better ibis and video features. Maybe not worth the upgrade.
The one feature of the GX9 has that I love that the GX 85 lacks is L monochrome D. This setting is my favorite B&W setting.
The GX85 is cheap. A good body alone on MPB is selling for $354. You can get the two lens kit from B&H for $650. I can recommend this body from personal experience. I have the black body. A real looker.
