Dave you are the Man you have outdone yourself two videos and a cooking instructions all in one day you are to be commended see what retirement can do for you its like your 30 years old again
For removal of knobs, there is a plastic tool at Auto Zone that I picked up for removing fasteners on car doors ( for accessing speakers, etc) that is perfect for removing knobs without any damaging them in any way. Comes in a kit of three ,..they have different angles. Just thought you may want to look into it. Love the videos.
Dave, I really enjoy watching you work on all these instruments. Your talent and knowledge mixed with the comedy really makes for great entertainment. Thank you!
want to thankyou for your videos, as i cannot afford to post my guitar to you for a setup, your videos are the best and have let me do the work myself. keep up the wonderful work.
3 in 1 in a can! I bought a used can from the 80s on eBay for $6 and was half full! I now have a can from the 80s and one I bought in the 70s! I did buy one of the new plastic containers and just use it for jobs suited for the terrible nozzle end.
Nice video, yes truss nuts.I usually drip a drop of 3 in 1 oil on the nut so it seeps into the threads from the top. I recently got a guitar about 35 years old that had never been adjusted, was frozen. The oil got in and I loosened it up. It creaked mightily in defiance but she gave way. The fretboard had an S roller coaster jump in it thought for sure I would have to refret after sanding the fretboard in a nice radius but the neck actually straightened out. It was like it was so bound up it literally sprang loose. The guitar unplayable and now is normal. Again great video on that.
Dave? I care. Gotta Squier Standard to fix. The saddles are raised way to high. With no tilt function, I shall have to remove the shim I installed in the pocket. Going to watch this video several times. Thanks
They get slagged a lot, but I like the micro tilt on Fenders, when they work. I had one that was so stiff I essentially had to chase the threads to get it to turn. And I've seen some where the little screw has fallen out.
My first strat was (still is) a 1976 I bought in late ‘76 from a guys pissed off sister whom he split on,and shafted her with all the bills. I paid $300 for it. These days, it’s not black anymore.......except for the under pick guard and trem pocket. Love those tuxedo strats! Third time watching this Dave, damn your good!
I was on the edge of my seat at the beginning of the video fearing that the neck rest would fall over and make a dent in the back of the neck, jeez. But as always Dave has, almost, everything under control.
Dave! Big fan! But wonder if you could do myself and maybe others a favor? When you are adjusting things such as action or relief… can you please say aloud the numbers you are seeing, and the numbers you are trying to achieve? Like “.010” relief.” Or “4/64”. And if it isn’t correct or what you want to see… those numbers aloud as well. I know for many setup is about feel. But the specs and numbers are important to people like me, and I like to know various techs’ take on such things. Thank you!!!! Love the channel.
Just a thought ~ I never use 3-in-1 Oil or *gasp* DW-40 anywhere on or in my guitar. Both will attract dirt, dust, grime and moisture. Dupont Teflon Non-Stick Dry Film Lubricant will not and is safe to use on any of your guitar parts. A 4oz squeeze bottle will last a lifetime, $3.50 and will loosen up frozen hardware. I also use it as my preferred "nut sauce" (nut and saddle lube) specifically because it dries dry (unlike "nut sauces" and Vaseline based lubes), leaves no film/residue and won't attract DNA and other gunk. Silicone spray will also not attract dirt, dust, grime or moisture but DON'T get it on your guitar's finish.
Hi Dave, a little off topic, but as another proud guitar playing Canadian, where did you get that great tee shirt? Thanks again for all the great tips and advice and humour on your videos.
Hi Dave, ever thought of rubbing a fine pencil point in the nut slots? I've never had any tuning problems. I guess the carbon acts as a lubricant, especially with trems.
Damm I was waiting for the intonation. Dave, what do you do when the saddles become maxed out against the back of the bridge? There has to be a trick. I have an american pro strat. G string is giving grief. cheers!
Isn't it amazing that Fender makes 5-figure guitars and STILL leaves plastic residue under the control knobs? Or uses open potentiometers instead of sealed ones so that dirt and grime can get into the pots? Or proper shielding for the electronics? Then again it makes paid work for Dave and the luthier community. Yay Fender USA, the GM of the 21st century!
Hey Dave love your channel, the videos are extremely helpful! I have a couple of questions for you, sir. Sorry this is so long, but it's driving me bonkers! I have an 1999 American Standard Strat with the 2 point bridge. I've put it in for a full setup, and fret dress. Upon getting my guitar back, I've noticed the saddles are sitting at an angle where the grub screws don't sit evenly (one is taller, than the other), I know it is meant to follow the radius of the fingerboard, but this seems a bit too extreme. The low E sits almost at 45 degrees. Surely this can't be correct, can it? The other issue is a warble on the low E harmonic and fretted 12th note. This has been going on before I put it in for the setup. The tech who did the setup, mentioned it was a wolf tone, because of improper pickup height. He decked the pickups, and the warble was still there, strings were replaced twice (just to take them out of the equation), still no joy. Any ideas what other components could cause this issue? Appreciate any advice mate. Cheers!
Other things can cause them too, such as a loose nut, a bridge saddle that isn’t sitting straight, or even unusual interactions between the strings and the guitar’s tremolo springs.
I just acquired a Squier Strat, circa '04, and the first fret action is too high so I was happy to see you file the nut down. Dave, was that a .022 guage gapper? I think I have to pop the nut off (huh, huh) and sand the bottom because I don't have them nut files.
You should do an all inclusive Stratocaster video. I have watched many of your videos to try to get all your points. This one has a great tip on filing the nut to .020 +1 .002. I replaced my strat nut with a graph tech that is not exactly plug and play. The nut is 7.25 and the guitar is 9.5. The second go round provided better results. I sanded the nut on the 9.5 radius and ended up with a much better result. I thought I went too far with the .007 second fret method. The nut actually just filed well to the .02 measure at the first fret on all strings. I am more confident in the job now. Intonation sounds improved. I do recommend the SM files as the GT material takes a bit of sawing. Maybe cut all your points into an all inclusive mish mash. Thanks again.
Unfortunately, that doesn't work cause it's not a fully enclosed shield. There are still areas unprotected that the signal can get through. I have a fender Am Strat, has the paint and pickguard shield and it buzzes. And noiseless (stacked humbuckers) pickups just don't sound as good as singles. But when you find that sweet spot (body position where it doesn't buzz) it's awesome.
That's why I hate those crap vintage Fender saddles, with less than 1/16th of actual threads, and their pokey screws . Not only that, the high peak leads to premature string breakage on the unwound strings.
someone said years back, you never take all the strings off, instead, you take one off at a time, then replace it with the new string. In this way the tension on the neck remains consistent. Is this theory a load of bullshit?
So, some people actually leave the plastic tear-off foil for years just sit there sticking out under the knobs?! collecting all sorts of crap? really? ... I don't even... what?
Pretty sure the main unspoken reason people bring you these used guitars right after buying them is cause then it's you who cleans two decades worth of gunk and rust off all their nooks and crannies. Full setup right off the bat, or checking for defects/problems/authenticity... all just excuses, they open the box, say "fuck me it's grimy, I don't even wanna touch it" and then it shows on your doorstep 5 minutes later. :)
I love watching your videos Dave. You’re like a slightly pissed off Bob Ross, except with guitars.
getz76 “slightly“
I was thinking Carl the groundskeeper's smarter twin! To each his own.
Dave you are the Man you have outdone yourself two videos and a cooking instructions all in one day you are to be commended see what retirement can do for you its like your 30 years old again

Special stew Mac spoon...I lol’d. Nice work on the strat.
She's floating again! It is always fun to hear the chiropractic popping of a truss rod that hasn't been loved.
Nice job Dave who ever the guitar belongs to should be well pleased, Cheers
Yup I am very pleased with the job Dave did, he does all my guitars all the time.
MrMikepresley are you in Toronto? Are his rates reasonable?
@@matthewmp111 sorry for the late reply, I am in Toronto, and his rates are very reasonable.
Great job by Dave, making some one's hurting strat, stratocastic!!!
Those Neutric silent jacks work perfect and I highly reccomend them. Ive never had one break. EVER! The Germans know what they are doing.
I have that exact guitar. I’ve had it since I was 13 years old.
I thought I was the only one that removed knobs with a teaspoon. Actually I use one on each side of the knob !
Hey Dave I love your RUclips videos. My favourite one is the Ampeg SVT video
I did a Black Squire Strat a while back (before I started posting videos guitar repair) for a practice guitar for daughter.
Easy peezy Dave nice setup!Cheers

Guitar luthiers and techs everywhere " Let me play you the song of my people 13:36 "
Little birdies in the background.

"For today's trade secret we have this...special ah stewmac........5 seconds later......spoon." HAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!
Pure Awesomeness
"People's stuff from the world". The Canadian perspective must yield some odd expressions, but this one is perfect.
will a cheap strat copy whammy bar stay in tune if you intonate and set it up right?
I was taking knobs off a Squier Affinity Strat like that once, and the shaft came right out. Oops.
I want that T Shirt
Hi Dave,
Great video. I always like the trem. arm set ups. Can you talk about your fret erasers? What grits do you suggest?
I thought the birds in the background were outside my window. “Don’t be scared”
Spoons: also good for removing bridge pins.

I want to be a luthier..are there groupies?
Damm I was waiting for the intonation. Dave, what do you do when the saddles become maxed out against the back of the bridge? There has to be a trick. I have an american pro strat. G string is giving grief. cheers!
An American pro strat that won't intonate properly??! Never heard of that.
its a gooch
Last resort put a shim under the heel of the neck.
Dave when are you getting more t-shirts
Is the neck tilt option MiA? My MiM doesn't have it.
No flat washers under the nuts on the pots?
@4:56 ...Can be yours for $79.99 plus $14.95 shipping..
I CARE... that's why you're good
another question lol, any advantages or disadvantages with a 'set -neck'? Or does it make no difference?
Elixir for life😆

There's those nighttime birds again...

Great one Dave!! What feeler gauge are you using for 1st fret nut action? 22?
i have to get one of these stew mac spoons hehehe

Dave, I cared to watch how to adjust the pickup height, what happened?
What’s with the Veg?
Is it growing from the neck support!
Great video as per Pal.
G in the U.K.
SEEM TO remember you took tuning stems of to place in order of size. these look different.
19:16... like Peter Frampton
I mentioned the Penny Black album during my show last week, hope someone came over to this channel to buy one or five!!
Have you talked to Hank at RATTLESNAKE CABLES?
Excuse me, but what does the strip on back of neck indicate? Why are two screw strat tremolo better than the six could you explain?
Skunk stripe is where they install the trust rod
It's not just a spoon... it's a luthier spoon!
Its a, official knob remover that can be used as a teaspoon !
I would add a drop of 3in1oil
Start with static...the Staticaster!
Stew Mac Spoon made me *snort*.
What is the point in Fender shielding the pickguard when they don't shield everything else? That little shield does nothing.
Unfortunately, that doesn't work cause it's not a fully enclosed shield. There are still areas unprotected that the signal can get through. DAVE!
Does it matter if it’s boiled linseed oil or not?
Dave!
Thank you 😊
I had asqier like that.great guitar for a plywood body. But that fender bridge sucks
170 lb. , +/_ string tension, ,.. i would set the neck, ( top bow ),, slightly proud?
Oh, Big sign in the city plaza ...
No money for tools?????
What happened Einstein
Spoon mac
That's why I hate those crap vintage Fender saddles, with less than 1/16th of actual threads, and their pokey screws . Not only that, the high peak leads to premature string breakage on the unwound strings.
Agreed! A lot of people seem to hate the block saddles but I love em! I think they function, feel and even look nicer, especially on the 2 point trem.
Shouldnt use compressor air near electronics
someone said years back, you never take all the strings off, instead, you take one off at a time, then replace it with the new string. In this way the tension on the neck remains consistent. Is this theory a load of bullshit?
Thanks Dave.
Cervical Spoon...Lick it clean before using on Guitars
A can of air? A compressor? Why would you want to blow all that gunk around your shop? Seems to me a vacuum would be the go to tool for that.
why straighten, the neck, with no string tension?, .. should be slightly proud, with no tension???, huh?
👍👍😎!
So, some people actually leave the plastic tear-off foil for years just sit there sticking out under the knobs?! collecting all sorts of crap? really? ... I don't even... what?
