"THE HANDY RELATIVE" LOL!!!!!!!!! No one makes me smile like you do sir. You don't know me from a hole in the Strat but I watch you every day and love you like a brother. A genius brother who fills my life with joy and laughter. Thanks for that Dave. 🌞
Where was this video six months ago when I rewired my Chinese Strat?!? Seeing this video actually makes me proud of the job I did because it shows I did a good job. Thanks for the video Dave!
"The bigger the blob, the better the job" LOL so many times I've had to fix this kind of mess but I'm stealing that phrase, unless you put it on a t-shirt and then I'll just buy it Dave
Caloss2 Channel I got an ultra bent neck with about an inch of clearance above the 12th fret. The truss rod is super bent. Is there any savior for my p bass.
I think I remember seeing a vid where Dave took the neck off the instrument, (forget bass or guitar), put blocks under each end, then placed a clamp in the middle to bend the neck back in the opposite direction - but I don't know wether or not there was a truss rod in there. I've never heard of a P.Bass neck not having a truss rod and since bending a truss rod would be counter-productive, that probably wouldn't help you. So it might be time to go check out Warmoth or just buy another bass. ...and that's "Warmoth" - not "Mighty Mite" Mighty Mite is garbage in everything they make Could just be your instrument needs a shim. Just dealt with that on a 1970's Epiphone ET-290 I got for my birthday.
Its amazing how you have patience with gooched guitars. Another great video. Thanks for the entertaining and educating content Dave! Greetings from Sweden!
Dave, you are the best! I have never made any comments in the past but, I have to say I love your vids. I laugh my ass off with your funny comments Rock On!!!
Dave's World of Fun Stuff Your welcome Dave, love watching your vids and your play with words......what gets me is why does RUclips keep coming down on you for swearing ? That's how us normal people talk. It's not as if you swear every other word, just when it's needed or when it's funny. Keep up the good work.
Regarding the pickup alignment and the strings aligning too far to the treble side: sometimes you can loosen the neck screws and tweak the headstock toward the bass side. On this Stratobastard, that would center the string alignment on the neck (look at the heel of the neck or the dots between the D & G strings when you do this) and get the strings over the pickups' polepieces where they belong. Most Strats and Teles (and clones) have a little wiggle room to do this. Many necks slip at the neck joint and the alignment goes all cattywompus, and it has to be reset. Rock on!
Great stuff as always Dave. I'd like to request a video or two summarizing what to look for when buying a used guitar, I think that would be really useful info
Finally had time to watch it. Dave, you mentioned refinishing a lacquered maple neck after the refret. I guess since you refret all sorts of instruments, you do that yourself. Can you show in a video how you refinish the neck and how to get back a similar nicotine coloured finish? Also, how to protect the decals (or do you just sand down the neck? Can't wait for your new reveal.
Thanks for the vid, Dave. It reminds me of a Fender Squier I bought a year or to back. I got it from "Cash Converters" for a mere 40€ because "the electronics were all bust". He-he, I thought. When I got it home and opened it up, it was easy to fix, but... there was a full set of Texas Specials in it! The guitar, however, is a disaster, with the bridge all skew-wiffety as in your video. It says Fender on the bridge pieces, but it should say Bender. And since it's a plywood body, I don't think I'll be fixing that. Still, the PUPs are fine. :)
The crummy headstock decal job was a dead giveaway its a crapbox strat.. nice " relicing" on the body lol. Dont blame you on not being jazzed to work on that guy. That morse code bridge is awesome !
I appreciate you doing what you can for these cheaper guitars. Guys like me try to get deals or can't pay good enough to justify buying a 2000 dolor guitar.but I'd like one.
The Turd-O-caster returns folks... This time someone ran a truck over it, gooched the electronics and called it a day.. And then of course sent it to Dave.
Great tips, Dave! When you do the tap test on the pickups with the screwdriver, do it with the screwdriver perpendicular to the pickup. If the shaft or handle of the screwdriver is near another pickup, it can cause a false result. Try this: select the middle pickup only, and then tap the neck pickup like at 16:08 in the vid (screwdriver handle over the middle pickup). It will sound like the neck pickup is activated, but it's not. The middle pickup is sensing the magnetized steel of the screwdriver and making signal to the amp, causing the impression that the neck pickup is on. Happy 2018!
When I worked in car stereo installation back on the late 80s in California We had a guy who's work was sloppy like that .. we called it the "clump" method
those pickups are brilliant. The whole neck could be re-done and acquire THAT real strat type feel. Big potential on that guitar. Nice video. Mission Control Over. Roger. Over/
Seymour Duncan's wiring diagrams are the best out there. What a mess that was! Agree that a lot of people don't get yhat you can use any part of the pot for the ground, you don't have to put five in one spot!
I need your help with something. I’m making a lefty 74 jazz bass replica. What was the neck finish in the 70s? Was it polyester, polyurethane, fullerplast, or something else? I would just use a clear polyurethane, but will it have a slight amber tint to it since it is oil based?
wayne rorbach can’t find the answer online. Some people say polyester, some people say polyurethane. Can’t ask fender because they’re idiots. I asked if mocha brown was nitro or poly in the 70s. They said poly, but I know it was nitro. I am leaning towards polyester, which seems correct, but I don’t know where to buy it
That bridge looks as if it has shifted a bit south of the old "38th parallel" there. Guess you'd have to fill in the old holes and re-drill and move it towards Pyongyang to make it straight. Just don't tell "Lil' Kim" about it. Then that axe would have some Seoul!
David quick question .Couldn't you put some back pressure on the neck. as in pressure bowing neck backwards. As you tighten the truss rod nut and help the truss rod nut move the neck into position so you don't put so much stress on the truss rod ?
youtubesuckspoo okay I didn't read down through all the replies. I usually just loosen the truss rod nut to put the guitar between my legs so that the back of the neck is on my knee and then just kind of put pressure on the neck and then tighten the truss rod doesn't take long time. Works most of the time so far .as I am an amateur !
this is a $100 pile of shit, and that's probably $90 more than its really worth.i wouldn't have touched this repair atrocity for under $150 to unfuck the mess it was in.
might be the customer's 1st guitar,i guess some in here started with a $3000 les paul as your first axe? also tune down the 3 treble strings then loosen the neck screws and the neck will pull pull up to get the correct reveal, takes 30 seconds to do.that is an sx body, mex pickups, cts pots and squier hardware and neck.poorly re decale'd (clear not levelel'd).
Fu?&ing hell Dave ! You could have a leased drop filled those small paint chips??...Great pronunciation on the word "SOLDER" cheersDave... Rob from England
Hey Dave i play bass in concert band for my school i use my own personal bass but its i don't think i have my hand in the right position on my fretting hand any tips when i play the the schools aerodyne jazz it seems to be much easier. But this isn't just for school its a bit hard to stretch for some of the notes any tips ?
if you haven't already, check out the forums at talkbass.com You'll get loads of information regarding technique. Though not knowing what you have for a bass, my guess is that the neck is wider at the nut than the Aerodyne jazz is. That would make it more comfortable.
"Electronicals"?? :) As soon as you exposed the wiring I noticed the wires were quite long and there was no shielding in the cavity. Near the end of this video you can see the strings aren't centered down the neck. That is another problem that should be addressed but is it worth the effort?
I will never understand buying a Chinese fake strat. But a used Fender Squire for $40 at a pawn shop that you like the feel of the neck on then drop in a real prewired pickguard with your choice of pickups and you will at least have a decent guitar that you can still even put more upgrades on if you like!!!
"THE HANDY RELATIVE" LOL!!!!!!!!!

when you hear a big snap, you back it up a quarter turn and then call the apprentice and tell him to finish the job
SuperDd40 good thinking
lmao

What Caloss2 Channel said, Dave.

A new neck.
"Dave to mission control... come in"
I laughed so hard, thank you. I really enjoy watching these videos. 👍

Really appreciate Dave taking the time to give the extra pointers and tips along with the usual main course of gouche.

"The bigger the blob the better the job," you are a master poet Dave. Thanks for the entertainment. Happy New Year Dave.
"How to add an extra pickup to any Strat for free by using your bridge"
This is awesome. The Pretendocaster looks nice. I like the body, with all the cracks.
Classic Dave-I smiled all the way through.2018 starts the best way.
Thumbs up just for the title, Dave.
Wow, there was an ad at the beginning...does this mean RUclips loves you?
Dave, you are the best! I have never made any comments in the past but, I have to say I love your vids. I laugh my ass off with your funny comments Rock On!!!
Worst case ontario? Let’s just let it be water under the fridge. That way we can get two birds stoned at once.

I was thinking the same thing, and then add a shim on parts of the side of the neck to try and keep it in that position.
this vid contains so many great dave quotes...
Thanks Dave for a few laughs before starting work this morning. 6 grounds to one spot on that pot, smh
But as the output jack was wired the wrong way they all became lives !
GSO... "guitar shaped object"
I would have liked to have seen a close up of the switch after you soldered it. But, I loved this episode. "..let a rat chew a hole..." awesome.
I love it when you say, "What could go wrong."
anticipation for the big news..... what a tease you are Dave :-)
Great stuff as always Dave. I'd like to request a video or two summarizing what to look for when buying a used guitar, I think that would be really useful info
Make sure it doen't have Fender writen on the headstock
Depends if you looking to play it, or collect and resale
Finally had time to watch it.

Epic - a Dave's Greatest Hits...
Davey Boy greetings from Ireland.it is definitly a potential SRV Project
Entertaining the $hit outta me. Keep up the good work man!
I see Uncle bumblefuck has been working on that poor pretendo Caster!Cheers Dave nice save.
The crummy headstock decal job was a dead giveaway its a crapbox strat.. nice " relicing" on the body lol. Dont blame you on not being jazzed to work on that guy. That morse code bridge is awesome !
that looks hurt. you can fix it super dave!!!! love the vids.
5:11 That"s A " BRIDGE PICKUP" LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL
I appreciate you doing what you can for these cheaper guitars. Guys like me try to get deals or can't pay good enough to justify buying a 2000 dolor guitar.but I'd like one.
lol! "Let's send it to Handy Dave! He'll fix anything!"
The Turd-O-caster returns folks... This time someone ran a truck over it, gooched the electronics and called it a day.. And then of course sent it to Dave.
I always just start over .....every time I run into a situation like this ....I just unsolder everything and just start over !
We agree just throw all that stuff out !!!
Looks like my pickguard except mine has alnico 5s cream covers and doesn't sound like that.
Bridge looks it's from a squire.
Hell , even the pickguard is bent ! LOL
Thanks for the clarification Captain Obvious . It was a joke . You should look into those on occasion .
smfh
Its never good when Dave says, Ya gotta see this.
What size allen wrench do you use to set pickup height? That's a handy trick.
"Dave to mission control....come in..." BAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA!!!!!!

Surprised you put that much effort into it.
AZWings I agree but he said it was a family member.
No he didn't. The person that wired it may have been a friend or family member of they guy that owns it and brought it to Dave to un-gooch

At last! A real Venter Strapocaster!
Loaded pickguard simply means that the pickups and knobs come pre installed all the soldering still has to be done by the customer
Thanks for the support. :-)
Those six holes are from the stock ssix point trem screws
Nice job sparky

Love the comment re putting it in a box and get a rat eating a hole. lol. great picture dude.

Yikes! I guess I am better at soldering than I thought!
Classic vibe is chinese and its top notch, its all in the seller and dont buy from the cheapest seller on aliexpress
cool vid gota love it when people play inside that shouldn't

Dave you should teach classes in toronto on basic guitar stuff.. I mean .. um
Wow! That will probably give me nightmares....
That's crazy work
Hey Dave, don't you always say that those Tremelo springs are screwed? Don't you always put them so the tension on each spring is even?
Fu?&ing hell Dave ! You could have a leased drop filled those small paint chips??...Great pronunciation on the word "SOLDER" cheersDave... Rob from England
In the garbage? You can send it to me, I fiddle around with crazy setups a lot. Could use the extra parts.
The strings shifted to one side problem might have been fixable by loosening the neck screws and shifting the neck in the neck pocket.
Reminds me of Borat when he’s learning how to tell a “not joke”... :)
Hey Dave i play bass in concert band for my school i use my own personal bass but its i don't think i have my hand in the right position on my fretting hand any tips when i play the the schools aerodyne jazz it seems to be much easier. Become a drummer.
Nice name James Allen
you should do a Dave's world tour of fun stuff and fix my gooched epi les paul
19:57 lol Dave. Was that a branded Fender? From an entry- level, chinese Fender kit perhaps?
Twist those long leads Dave so it’ll look cleaner inside of there 👍
Dave why did you not user shielded cable from the pickups?
New from Ronco....the Pretend-O-Caster!
Buddy didn't know how to salder on the guitar shaped object lol
"GUYS!!!" -soon available as a T-shirt
The wiring's just all gooched up. That's what friends are for.
"Electronicals"?? :) As soon as you exposed the wiring I noticed the wires were quite long and there was no shielding in the cavity. Near the end of this video you can see the strings aren't centered down the neck. That is another problem that should be addressed but is it worth the effort?
So was it a Chenda Slat?
Great work Dave 👍

Wiring and soldering by school for the blind. I had to shield my bass, it was all bare wood like that one.
I view any Strat with the pickguard screw by the 5 way moved toward the headstock is usually junk. The CBS headstock is another turn off.
Was it our friend Mr. Gooch?
Morse Code Guitar effects. Lol.
Would be good to hang on the wall as art? Maybe ask his friend to hang it? I'm sure he'd destroy the wall! 🎵🎸
Hey, don't knock swapping the earth and signal wires. That got me $50 off an SD Curlee bass at a pawn shop once.
Looking at, the pickup rout.
Is that a semi acoustic Stratocaster?
Or where the rats, really hungry!
A lot of cold soldering joints on this guitar
