► In this video I will show you how I take care of my Mixed Carpeting Plants foreground in my IAPLC 2019 60x50x40cm scape.
Micranthemum tweediei 'Monte Carlo' can be a weed and will easily overgrow other carpeting plants, specially such as slow growing Marsilea crenata or hirsuta sp.
To maintain a nice looking mixed carpet and not just everything Micranthemum Monte Carlo, you have to do some maintenance once in a while.
Watch my video to learn how I remove excess Monte Carlo from the Marsilea section and which tools are best for Micranthemum Monte Carlo Care.
Cheers
Jurijs

1:17 "it doesn't float up" while plant in tank floats up 🤣👍
Very nice scape and good info, thank you.
"it doesn't float up" meaning it doesn't have a tendency to detach when left to grow a thick carpet
@@rponce78 I'm sure that floater was from his trimming but the timing was excellent..
haha yes man perfect timing and well spotted!! must be a random trimming or a single leaf from background plants floating around
Did not have much education on carpeting plants. Saw this at my local store under a different name. At first it was hard for me to tell if it is that or not. But now after two weeks, it just grew a thin, yet beautiful carpet and it definetly is this species. Love this plant.
There are quite a few plants that look very similar while in juvenile stage
@@JurijsJutjajevs the carpet is now around 1.5 cm thick and all the new growth looks the same. It was sold under the name Mircanthemum Mircathemoides, which grows vertically. Mine grows flush to the substrate with roots coming out from each node, creating a strong carpet. Does not look like dwarf baby tears either.
Thank you very much!
Really helpful for me! I have a Marsilea Crenata carpet and I wanted to get Montecarlo to! Now I know how to do😍🙏🙏🙏
Thank you very very much!💪💪
its not easy to keep them both apart, but its possible and now you know how to do it
@@JurijsJutjajevs That's true! Thanks for the tipps🙏
Thank you for coming back and letting us know everything about this hobby, my support from México
Thank you for your support
Great tip and will love to see a dry start video.
My latest nano aquascape tutorial is kind of a DSM tutorial
Hi Jurijs, thanks for the tips !
Showing my support from Morocco 😉
thank you, appreciate your support
Great tip video! Where ya been Jurijs?! Glad to see you back making videos! Thank you!
summer vacation, legal issues, what's important - now I'm back :)
Well I’m happy your back and doing well! Can’t wait for future stuff! You do great stuff for the aquascaping field and have a talent most in the field dream off! Keep it up my friend!
nice video. Love to see a dry start set up.
it now runs for 3 weeks as a DSM, I will however make a dedicated DSM video
First I want to say thank you for your informative videos! I love you aquascaping style. I am having a tough time deciding on what to do for my first carpet. I was sold on just doing 100% Monte Carlo for a my foreground, but I am likening the idea of having some dwarf hair grass around my hard scape.
Better use Helanthium tenellum
I like the look of just monte carlo. I need to try that in a tank at some point. It's cool to see how thick your carpet and how it took a heavy trimming.
Monoculture carpets are great, but they become boring quickly ;)
Micranthemum tweediei 'Monte Carlo' and Marsilea crenata is a mouth full ;)
Thanks for the tip bro.
haha, I have changed the title now
@@JurijsJutjajevs lol xD
wow nice timing jurijs, i’m 2 weeks away from starting my first mixed carpet (dwarf hairgrass and monte carlo) so this video is extremely useful for me!
great content as always =)
I wouldn't use MMC and hairgrass again. MMC will overpower it easily. If you want to mix hair grass - use HC, if you want to mix Montecarlo use Sagittaria subulate or helanthium tenellum green
ok i'll try using the tenellum instead of hairgrass =)
thanks so much for the advice i really appreciate it...
if i please ask one thing though..?
how long would you use powersand special and amazonia before replacing it? i'm rescaping my 60p after 18 months and just wondering if i should keep the substrate or replace it? (was previously a "medium" tech scape, c02 but pretty low/medium light)
no carpet just crypts and very pink h'ra in the back.
(2 litres of powersand special and soil is about 1 1/2 inches deep in the front and about 4 inches deep in the back)
thanks again jurijs
I would definitely replace the soil, the PowerSand you can reuse if you want to keep budget low. If you can afford, replace both
thanks again for your advice Jurijs i will replace them =)
one last question?
last one i promise!
will the nerites, amano's and cherry shrimp i currently have in there be ok during the first week or so while the soil is leeching ammonia and with the tank lacking biofilm?
thanks again so much for your advice.
its hard to tell, some people do this if they have use mature filter, but I would give the tank a couple water changes and some water testing prior adding live stock
Hi Jurijs, now that's a great tip, thanks as always for sharing.
You welcome Terry always appreciate your comments
This is something so simple that it had not occurred to me as a way to the MC at bay. Regarding DMS, yes please! I think that could be very useful not just in aquascaping but in Wabi Kusas, as well.
I did a LDSMB test recently with several different carpeting plants, they all worked :) will make nice video about it soon
As usual, great pro tip ! Thanks for sharing my friend 😎
Thanks Dan and welcome to Germany ;)
Dry start method; "Lazy" dry start method; and proper GLOSSOSTIGMA ELATINOIDES planting+triming. That sounds great contents for upcoming Videos.
Please do. Cheers from Portugal
Yes that one has to go viral if I can make a good video!
One day, I'll do a carpet tank. Thanks for sharing.
what holds you back of doing it now?
@@JurijsJutjajevs Time. I work full time as an IT manager. Managing 20 tanks takes a lot of work. But I plan to get a 32 Gallon Fluval Flex for the Holidays. Might be a good project to do a carpet tank.
Great tips sir what is the ideal water condition for Monte Carlo
hi just started a 20g monte carlo Iwagumi tank with diy co2 injection on a rich aquasoil. i just bought 500ml of micro and iron/potassium ferts. how much and how many times do i need to apply the ferts? thanks!
Subbed :) Very nice content, very laid back, nice to listen to.
I would like to see a video on dry start method. I actually have some seeds I bought and was going to try it, but any advice from a pro aquascaper would be much appreciated.
Forget the seeds, they are not carpeting plants.
Aquatic plants don’t produce seeds
Hi jurijs. Would it be possible to make the same type on video on glosso. I don't believe there are enough videos out there to show how to properly maintain and plant glosso. Love you videos by the way! Keep on doing what you're doing!
yes will do, when I have a scape with glosso
I've had zero luck trying to grow this stuff, love the look you have managed to create Jurijs and crazy to see it that tall! Not sure if its just incompatible with Seachem Flourite
Never used this stuff, but you should try tropica aquarium soil
@@JurijsJutjajevs Is it easier than Cuba?
You have tons of patience.
Great video
What was the substrate used in this video? The marsilea I have doesn't grow at all, it is healthy but its growth is limited.
Very nice!
Where did you bought the trolley please? Thank you
Ikea 😉
Thanks, this was a really help full and interesting tip.
You welcome
Sir, some of the roots of the monte carlo is outside the soil, is it okay?
it depends
Very nice Juris. What are those fine too tweezers? Can you please link them?
They are linked in the description
@@JurijsJutjajevs thanks Juris. Yea... ADA ones are spectacular...but was hoping for something more palatable price wise . Lol.
素敵な水景ですね🐠😊

Do I have to bury the monte carlo under the gravel for it to grow or leave the top half above the gravel
burry as much as needed and as little as possible 🙃
Thanks for tips! Will be interesting to see video about dry start! By the way, what fish live in this tank?
Too many to mention here 😆 I have to make a video and show them all
@@JurijsJutjajevs Video - it's will be perfect!😁
Can monte carlo be grown on gravel without fertiliser
Hey Jurijs I have a quick question if you don't mind answering. I'm currently growing a Monte Carlo carpet, well working on it. I got a pot from tissue culture and while I see a lot of new growth, some of the old growth from the pot is not doing so well. Should I trim away the old growth or let it be? Thank you for the video, can't believe how thick Monte Carlo get XD It's kind of ridiculous
I couldn’t believe my self that it was growing this tall and I’ve been able to trim and rescue the carpet. In your case its depends if the new growth is already well rooted. Trimming loose parts can uproot the new growth
@@JurijsJutjajevs Thank you for the advice! I will do that, but first wait a bit to be sure the new growth is well rooted :)
good choice ;)
Hi Jurijs - saw the part of your video that you have so thick of montecarlo. May I ask how do you manage to clean the detritus beneath?
No need to do it when you have aquarium soil
@@JurijsJutjajevs Thank you very much👍Lastly, do you have any advice what do i need to do for me not to experience montecarlo floating? At first, they're very good. For about 6 months but when i start to trim, they start to float on other ends..Thank you very much in advance.👍😊
DRY START!!!YES!!!
Thanks a lot for this! Really useful tip!!
you welcome FK I take many techniques for granted but then I think - someone might find it useful! Glad you like it
is it okay if i use monte carlo for my low tech tank without co2?
Im thinking about doing a dry start for it but i dont want the plant to brown after
Monte Carlo can survival without co2, but it is hard to grow a full carpet in a lowtech tank
Thanks Jurijs! Unfortunately I have not been successful to get Monte Carlo to grow and spread,,,, snails seem to ride over it and the MC seems to get up rooted repeatedly.... I need the snails and shrimp for algae control, but my MC sees to get very fragile the longer it is submerged..... ideas?
do you have soil substrate? enough Co2? soft water? enough nutrients in the water?
Awesome tweezers!
my favorite, I'm using this exact ones already almost 10 years!
more plant technique videos please.
Great video 💚🌱
thanks Sam!
Jurijs Jutjajevs Your Welcome 😃
I just got some marsilea hursuita and Eliocharis Acicularis 'mini' in an attempt to finally get a decent mixed carpet. I took out some of the dwarf saggitaria to make room for them (oh, how I wish I'd never planted THAT little thug! 🤣), but I've left a bit because it's sent runners ALL OVER my tank and I think rather than ruin my entire scape I'm going to control it with frequent severe haircuts! 😁
Yes you can control everything with frequent trimming
@@JurijsJutjajevs I could do with some *really* long scissors (18"). I have an aquascaping 'multi-tool' with interchangeable heads which includes trimmers, but it's quite awkward to use. 🤔
I don’t like the multi tools for this reason, they are not good at anything
Why my montecarlon now growing and propagating properly, like yours ?
I already send you a details in your Facebook messenger. I am hoping that you will reply me.
A good tutorial. Thankyou
you welcome John, what other tips I should share?
Give us tips on how to turn the Rotala H'RA plant red. Because it is very difficult for beginners, even though they have followed the tutorial on the internet
noted. actually it is not that difficult at all. Hra will turn red under intense light and low nutrients. but also with high nutrients it will turn red
@@JurijsJutjajevsAnd the lights should also be reddish (but I use DIY lights, because factory lamps are quite expensive). I have tried all the methods on the internet but have not gotten maximum results (bright red). It turns red, but the leaves are yellow in color. I hope "jurijs" can discuss these tips in the future
What kind od water u use ? Tap water or RO water + remineralizr
RO water and minerals powder
@@JurijsJutjajevs what kind of powder ? brand u can recommend
What is the micranthemum umbrosum
Yes please
The H.araguia is lovely brown
that was before it melted..
@@JurijsJutjajevs thats odd
Can montercarlo still life without co2 inject ?
yes and no, it depends :D good answer? all plants do better with Co2, without injected Co2 it depends how much natural Co2 is in the water and how much light/Nutrient is available - all variables need to be in balance
Thank you 🙏
YES dry start!
See my today’s video 😉
I do the same haha. Genius brains meeting 😎😜
what else you Genius do? ;)
@@JurijsJutjajevs same as you, eat, sleep, scape, repeat... 👀
Eh. I still can't grow monte carlo at all. It always melts even if I've a base of Tropica Soil. I find glosso to be *much* easier to grow than monte carlo. For me it's mostly eleocharis parvula (pussila) and glossostigma. I've had very little luck with other carpets. At least when it comes to fast spreading carpets. Marsileas sort of trudge on in my tanks but never spread that much. Same with lilaeopsis species.
what about your water parameters? most plants do better in soft water and with Co2 Injection
@@JurijsJutjajevs I've a TDS meter with EC switch that says 136 microsiemens (or 68 ppm on the TDS side but that's Na calibrated) so it's quite soft. GH is about 3 or less but I'm using seachem equilibrium to boost it slightly. My CO2 is stable but I don't have accurate measurement of it. Still it's enough to grow glosso nicely in Tropica soil tanks.
Can it grow in sand only?
If complete dosing over water column yes, works a lot easier with soil substrate
What is the best temp to grow MC?
21-24°C
Thanks jurijs! Big fan, love from India.
Ist monte carlo tatsächlich pflegeleichter als hc cuba?
ja viel einfacher! braucht weniger, wächst besser, und vor allem immer flach
Did you use CO2?
Yes, almost always use it
dry start? why not?
I like dry start

Jurijs turkhish langue please 🙏🙏 love you Man✋✋✋
Hi my monte carlo is getting white in colour
nutrient deficiency
Well this is a full time job for my 300L aquarium...
hire someone :D :D no seriously, dont look at it as a job - its therapy ;)
@@JurijsJutjajevs Yeah, I know, I try to enjoy it as much as I can, and sometimes I choose plants based on maintenance too. If it's a hassle to do maintenance and I feel like I don't have time or energy for it, I better let it go and do what I enjoy, let the rest for nature.
the right plants choice is very important, I think its worth a video on its own .. (taking notes)
@@JurijsJutjajevs Yeah, maybe you can do it, I had some notes about that too, but I have a hard time posting on my Aqua Garden channel.
I have the same mix😂❤️
I’m struggling to get Monte Carlo to grow for me and your issue is that it grows too well for you! First world problems! 😆
Most plants are easy once you meet all their needs. Most plants prefer soft, slightly acidic water, nutrient rich substrate, CO2 injection and decent light.
@@JurijsJutjajevs thanks Jurijs 🙏 I have all those ingredients and have been trying for nearly 3 years, but somehow can never get the right balance! I’ve had the tank looking semi-ok for some periods, but then it goes through another phase of algae or melt down. I’ve resorted to getting rid of the stems, turning the lights down and sticking to Java fern, crypts, and anubias!
2:16 hey what the heck?!
10CM tall? hold my beer ...
Montecarlo can hold your beer 🍺 🤣
@@JurijsJutjajevs there's a challenge there somewhere
I'm sure with enough beer and montecarlo we can make it work ;)
@@JurijsJutjajevs can montecarlo grow in hienekin ?
Get rid of the MC all together and you won't have any problems lol.
haha :D but I like montecarlo a lot, its just a weed thats needs some trimming from time to time
Whatever pure publicity. Nothing about the plant.
