What a lovely painting, and so realistic. The girl in the painting is the spitting image of my great niece, Charlotte when she was eight. Thank you for your videos.
Hello Christine, well I finally got smart. A.) I subscribed to your videos. -I actually thought I already was. B.) I watched your painting on two devices at once. I watched one being completed and another as a finished painting. It really helped a lot, on knowing how you were going to add shading and color choices, etc. Thanks, another awesome lesson. I'll finally be able to dig my paint supplies out and try some of these techniques I've been learning from watching your videos. We finally found a house to buy. And it comes with an extra 'unused' room. Which I get, and it'll be my painting and sewing room. I cannot wait. Your videos helped to pass the time. Many thanks to ya.
Christine this is so beautiful ,she looks just like she’s about to tell you something funny as kids do..It has personality I love it..Thank You for doing a brilliant tutorial without long words and dye numbers ..I have learnt more watching you than most I have seen who baffle you with science lol..Such a stunning painting 😀
There were many instants where I thought you screwed up when adding a boldly contrasting colour, only to find out later you made a great choice. Love the result. Thank you for sharing your talent.
Wow, this is incredible. It is exactly what I need as I am a beginner just starting to use more mediums. I have learnt some great techniques and will go and have a go now. Thank you!
Just lovely. Really love the light you are able to convey on the skin and watching you paint hair is quite blissful. Your palette is almost identical to mine when doing portraits and although I'm fairly new to portraits in watercolour, I'm enjoying the colour mixing and underpainting a great deal. Great vid. Many thanks 👍🏻
Just beautiful! Thank you for showing the process and also seeing the mixing colours part. You’re very talented. Love watching this beautiful piece come to life!
Thanks for sharing Christine. I just got back into watercolour and I love portraiture, so I found you at the right time! You are so good at hair, I just can't do it - too impatient. I love your style - kudos to you.
Thank you for such a brilliant video. I paint in watercolor... have been painting about 6 years. I enjoy doing animals and landscapes. A neighbor of mine brought me a photo of her niece who had passed away and asked me if I would paint her. She's African -American and the flesh tones gave me a challenge to begin with and in the photo I don't even see eyelashes. I pretty much did as you have done. I'm at a point that I would have called finished a few years ago... now to begin the finish work.... Thanks for taking me through the finish that will give me the painting I need to give my friend and neighbor. This is my 2nd portrait... you make it look very simple. Much thanks! Your painting is gorgeous.
Thanks so much for your lovely comment, Joyce! I am glad this video helped you - I am sure your neighbour will love your painting! And yes, I like to do the lashes simple way, looks better in my opinion than too detailed. Happy painting!
Beautiful!! The child is beautiful and the painting is awesome. Can't understated how you can use such a thick brush to make the fine lines around the eyes, etc. Thank you. I'll never be able to do this.
Thanks so much! The brush is wide on one side and pretty thin on the other side, that's why I love it! With a little practice you can do it! I don't like to change too many tools while painting - disturbs the flow :)
i like that you have sub titles rather than speaking, much easier to follow. your drawing is so beautiful, i need as you said practice my drawing, thank you great video beautiful watercolor 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Beautiful painting and great that you told us actual time in description. Wish you could talk through the process it is more companionable, stops my mind drifting.
I am a pastel artist looking to venture further into another medium and after watching your videos I think I have found my new medium, thanks for the insrpiration. I have subscribed to your you tube channel..........
I learned so much from this but I wished I could have seen your reference photo. Did you work with one or did you create this 'on-the-go' with only your imagination?
You did a marvelous job of showing how good you are and how fast you can paint. However, I didn't learn a thing. I am not experienced enough to use that flat brush. I have worked out my pallet and it is basically the same as the one you use. I don't know which colors to mix as you don't tell us that. At this point I am using many layers thin paint to work out the colors I need. If it doesn't work I lift it. I don't know which colors to paint blond hair. I need to know about background. I have ruined several portraits trying to work out backgrounds. Lips is another area I struggle with. You did a beautiful job, but I don't know what you did.
Thank you, Carolyn. I am sorry to read about your disappointment. But first, please don't think I came to this point over night. I am almost completely self taught in watercolor and have ruined and thrown away enough paintings to know what you are going through. Try to have more fun when painting - do some painting just for fun as practice, smaller and simpler. Do some tests how the paint works, what happens - you will get a better feeling. I am sorry, I am painting for a long time, but have never taught painting, so explaining what I am doing (mostly intuitive) is not that easy as it seems. I am always trying to improve my videos, but it takes time as I am doing it as a side project between my full time job as an illustrator. Please check out my other videos as well, in some videos I explain more about which colors I mix. I just posted a new video about blonde hair, hope that helps! All the best :)
Carolyn, not all artist give free lessons. What I do is watch everything I can on the subjects that interest me and I've also purchased lessons thru places like Udemy and Craftsy. There are also some artist on youtube that offer lessons at a small price. You just have to look for them. Good luck and like Christine says, have fun.
I see why you may be irritated and I too learn a lot by watching speedpaints but you must understand that those tutorials are quite helpful to some people and the instructors are trying their best. You don't need to put one artist down to bring another one up. Have a good day/night :)
HI here. thank you for sharing. It fascinating I'm trying to do portraits myself. I take it is was all wet on dry? except where you laid down a wash to come back into once the paper had absorbed the water. Was the paper dry when you started?. How long did it take ? Did you complete in 1 sitting? regards ric
Hi Richard! Thank you! Yes, I started with a dry paper, wanted to keep it clean because of the light skin color and highlights. The actual painting time should be in the video description, don't remember it anymore :) Yes, I completed it in one sitting, maybe few small breaks :)
Beautiful work! Do you focus a lot on the color you choose? Or do you focus more on values and go for "close enough" colors? Thanks again, this is amazing! - Liron
Hi Liron! No, I think colors aren't that important - you can paint an incredible portrait with green and red if the values are right. I always paint the colors I see and not what's there :) Values are the key! And also composition - I often change/add colors and values to balance the artwork. Thanks so much!
you gotta prep the paper first, the paper itself gotta be around 300gsm (in my opinion) if you don't want it to warp as much , and finally tape down all the sides
My paper buckles a little too, but because I record it from above it's not that visible. And yes, 140lb buckles less, and taping down helps to keep it in shape as well. You can also use watercolor paper pads - makes it even more easier!
This is so wonderful. I'm a traditional pastel pencil portrait artist and I've just begun watercolor portraiture (they're total opposites!). I appreciate the realism of skin tones you accomplish here. Would you mind sharing the paints/brands you use for this one? (:
Very lovely head! A bit over-worked in the lips and nose ... but hypnotic and beautiful .... as those 'photographic' aspects still juxtapose exceedingly well with the abstract hair and background..
Loved it! Also thanks for the help because I want to make self portrait too with water paint😬 also I had a question what type of paper do you use to paint with watercolors?
Paint in the size you feel comfortable with until you feel comfortable to go bigger! There are artist they paint only small and there are artist they choose to paint large, both has pluses and minuses - find your way :)
Hi Christine, many thanks for your video. Is it possible for you to describe the colours of your palette. It will help me a lot...as a colourblind person:-)? Special the colour of the skin
Hi William! Hi Sue! I just posted a new video about skin colors, maybe it helps! Otherwise, the colors of my palette are listed in the video description. Here is the link for the skin-colors video: ruclips.net/video/-ge6z4Z3OV8/видео.html
Hay que saber cuando parar en la terminaciòn de un cuadro, los ultimos retoques de sombras, con todos mis respetos sobran, aunque me parece un buen retrato.
Just amazing! Well done! ❤❤❤❤😊
I'm blown away by how much of this you did with fairly large brushes. Wonderful to watch. Thank you
So helpful in understanding the patient work of layering gradually in watercolour and blending.
What a lovely painting, and so realistic. The girl in the painting is the spitting image of my great niece, Charlotte when she was eight. Thank you for your videos.
Ha-ha, Cris, that's awesome :) I used a photo of my daughter, but she doesn't look very much like her on the picture :)
Hello Christine, well I finally got smart. A.) I subscribed to your videos. -I actually thought I already was. B.) I watched your painting on two devices at once. If u r talking about thw brush in 12:52 It's pro arte prolene plus brown handle watercolor brush! you can find it on cassart.co.uk if u r in England.

Thank you, Nathalia! All info is posted in video description. I believe I painted this on Strathmore Watercolor paper 400 series.
Please mention the name of the colours you used.tnk

the bigger size of paper size, the more difficult the portrait to paint (for me).. any advice?
