Extreme poverty in China: poorest village hopes for change

    Xiaoguancheng village in Hebei province is among the poorest in China. The yearly per capita income of its residents is below 3,000 yuan (US$475). The village has been targeted as part of President Xi Jinping’s campaign to wipe out poverty across China by 2020.
    SCMP visits the village to assess its current condition and will return in subsequent years to see if and how the government’s poverty alleviation scheme is working.

      That is why villages are shrinking and cities are growing and she might have moved to some other place like Beijing or Shanghai for a better opportunity for High School.

      @@aloomilk6326 oh it's not that easy to move to cities if you come from a village, you need to have a permission of residency that you have to ask from authorities and it needs money and job. You can't get a job without that authorization...

    a lot of the poorest families are those with disabled family members, a great way of fixing the problem is to have a proper system where mentally ill or disabled people can get proper care.

      obsidianstatue You do know those doctors need money as well, not just from the government. If that were to happen everywhere, the governments would soon be in debt. I don’t disagree with you as I am a British doctor working specifically for the NHS, all I think is that the government needs to find an efficient way to balance out expenses and income.

      Here in Brazil we have a law that obligates companys with more than 100 employers to fill at least 5% of the hires w/ disabled people, plus the public health system that take care of the needs of these ones

    My grandparents who were born 1910 had pretty tough lives, no electricity and walking to school in pitch black cold darkness. And doing chores and working at home. Watching these documentaries gives a slight hint of how it was. Also some hope that it will be better for the ones present.

    to be honest and I know people will argue with me,
    - they look clean.
    - they have food ( may not be enough)
    - nobody does drugs
    - no gangs
    - village seems very tidy and clean
    If you have ever seen Detroit poor people and Indian poor people, they are not too bad.

This family faces a very different issue from the poor people in Detroit or other large American cities, so I don't think its even fair to compare them. Imagine the mental stress that poor girl is under... it terrifies me.

      The gap is far far far worse in the US then anywhere else on the planet, and the lowest gap betwen the rich and the poor in the world is in China.

      @@rakshitraina3203 lol, sorry but you cannot compare these conditions. But in most countries there are huge gaps between rich and poor (not all). I'm lucky as a scandinavian we are pretty much same but of course some are rich and some are poor. A "poor"person still have 100 times better conditions than 3rd world countries. I live in Philippines and there it's huge difference between rich and poor as well but when I go to US it can't be compared.

    At least, in China, poverty is not accompanied by violence. They only struggle to get better in life economically. In the US or Latin America, the poor places are flooded by violence, drug trafficking and homicides.

      Ya, I was just going to say the same thing ! My wife is from China and as soon as I seen that, I called her over and showed it too her. I said to her if the average yearly salary in this place is less than 500 bucks a year, then how is the girl able to afford a pair of brand new Nike shoes that are probably worth at least $160 !! She said that someone probably gave her the shoes. I seen another video about these supposedly very poor people living on top of some mountain in China somewhere, and the man they were interviewing had 3 or 4 gold teeth in the front of his mouth and his wife was wearing rags , chain smoking cigarettes and had big gold ear rings in her ears !! If they are that poor and hard up, then how are they affording that stuff?? It's quite obvious to me that a lot of these people choose to live like this, either that, or they have their priorities totally backwards.

      You should look at the wealth gap in America and compare it to that in China. The maximum wealth gap in the wolrd is in North American region, and the least in China region.

      They have “dibao” which means low income insurance that gives each applicable person about 100usd a month, which is not a lot but it definitely helps. the family in the video probably can get around 300 to 400usd a month

    We believe that President Xi Jinping will wipe out the poverty all around China as soon as possible. As we have seen, recent years, many many villages and countrysides have been stepped out from poverty and these farmers have been felt a sense of happiness. Because of the policies that President Xi promulgated and he took actions to ours life and more. Thank to our dearest President Xi.

      @@joeyliu4443 This is not propaganda. Many families living in extreme poverty in remote mountainous areas have been relocated to cities to get free housing and to teach them job skills. Some of the fake news online about muslims being sent to concentration camps is actually job training for illiterate muslims.

    This is why family units are so important... I find it interesting how in China poverty seems to be a lack of modern technology, and in the UK poverty seems to be a lack of food... However, In China the poor are surrounded by food to sell, and in the UK the poor are surrounded by iPhones and smart tv's, ai systems in the home, new tech, old tech, you name it, we've got it... So my question is, how does THAT work!? And WHY are we (the chinese and uk poor people) getting deeper in individual debt because of it all!?

      @@sandeepsanghera1069 I agree, people are corrupt. In Capitalism everything counts. At least in China there are dozens millions of companies as well. Opportunities are still vast. Unlike in bigger countries with bigger salary like here in the US that are outsourcing their work out leaving many local "talents" without jobs, but China is a capitalist country too. Eventually they might outsource to smaller countries too.

      That's the difference between absolute and relative poverty. Then there's the subjective aspect of poverty to be taken into account: a person may feel poor or be considered poor even though their basic needs are being met simply because they can't afford the latest gadgets or fashions.

      flower school is well equipped in china because of government investment and private funds but teachers think computer class is not so important to primary or high school students in some remote rural schools

    The poverty is due to the disability of the rural family members. The government has the basic subsides to these kind families which ensure their schooling , food and medicals.

      supermotokev As a Chinese, I would say It’s quite normal for poor(and extremely poor) people in China to have land and home(and the land has no tax itself & they can own the land like forever). Chinese government does this to ensure they won’t starve to death. But the problem is that they are POOR and their income is very low

    Okay so the dad can't work full time due to health issues but he can certainly help with laundry so his daughter can focus on school work. Also maybe he shouldn't be wasting money on cigarettes and help his daughter more.

    I have got emotional bcoz we are in same situation before 2008 but somehow father got job now we have owned house and poverty is there in our country due to overpopulation and less national money and resources

    I see a very decent family and lifestyle. Compared with my country Argentina where the poorest ares are fill of violence and drugs. I think China has dignity, its a culture with integrity.

Old slum concrete buildings are being dismantled and new modern buildings zones are being built in replacement. That in sichuan. Chinese say themselves they are poor but in fact chinese are working so hard and very active to get rid of poverty. I have seen this by my eyes. New subways and new high speed train lines are being built madly. If a person visited china 5 years ago that person cannot say what china looks like today. Quick changes.

    why doesn't this man go to the nearest poultry farm and buy a hundred laying hens? five hundred is better. it is much more profitable to feed corn to chickens and sell eggs than to sell corn. maybe I don't understand something? the Russian peasant never sold grain; he fed it to pigs and to his beloved cow - nurse. after that, he sold pork and milk at the market. grain costs a penny, eggs, milk and meat are rubles.

      China pulled 600 million people from poverty in last 30 years, but still millions and millions who needed to be saved and that will take a time.
      Nowadays things goes wild in China, one day you woke up you see technology, day after day brand new technology comes while you sleep, how crazy is that???
      And one more crazier thing is famous brands and those brands sold so fast.
      approximately 100 million users than entire Europe in China.

      I lived on the border with China in 88-89. I remember what he was, and I see what he's become. Yes, China has come a colossal way.

      想想文革期间没高考那一辈人... 1966年要高考的人现在已经老年人了,还有一批大爷大妈即将进入老年,也就基本要退休了。这一代的老年贫困地区问题... 唉

    People talking about this not being extreme poverty.. how? They barely have enough to eat. In china there’s no rent or tax for owning land. If there were they wouldn’t be alive. And school is free. Just imagine yourself in their situation. You can’t. Because you’re behind a phone or computer screen
