@@roshnik5137 not true bro. Maybe 100 years ago. Now it can happen either way. the wife or the husband may decide this type of things. Each family is different
I think the tough part about being them is more about living life aimlessly It's not tough to find a spot to sleep, find some food to eat, or even afford some small luxuries like ice cream; physical survival is not the issue here The mental anguish though, is a totally different story; imagine waking up everyday and not knowing what are you living for, not knowing why exactly do you even need to wake up For most people, however small their goal is, there are at least things to accomplish everyday - wake up, go to work on time, do your job, earn your pay, so that you can pay your bills and afford all your stuffs; but for these people, it's just nothing I can't even jmagine how depressing that must be
You make a really good point here. It is indescribably torturous to drift from day to day without a direction, without a goal. But I don't suppose that it is truly like this for all of them. Nguyen's words don't strike me as of one who is insecure and aimless, but of one who is truly content and has found peace and a reason for living with what little he has. Yip, on the other hand, seems to be more similar to what you have described. The comparison I'd make is towards those who have decent or high-paying jobs, who work and work towards what they believe to be their goals, but cannot imagine or absolutely refuse to consider how they'd live, when they have nothing. If their goals are so fragile that they collapse under certain circumstances, I don't believe that they'd be very fulfilling goals to begin with. In contrast, the goals that drive these people under poverty to live are far greater than what many of those living in security can imagine, as they have withstood whatever trials they were faced with. It really makes us think, about what could be the admirable goals that drive these people forward, and what lessons we can learn just from observing their way of life, so that we ourselves may find the same fulfillment and satisfaction that they have.
You all sound like people who without going to work and making yourself believe feel fullfilled but you ar all rather confused lonely, and depressed lol. O lord i have no purpose what am i going to do? Lol weak minds , people go crazy with such thoughts. You think working you job everyday gives you any more purpose than these people? please. How bout you live for yourself and make that your purpose. Just live your life .
You underestimate the power of laziness. Some people will exert more effort to avoid working than to just do the work. They could easily get a job at a fast food place and give themselves structure and get an apartment to share with a roommate, but they don't want to. The problem with freedom is that it gives people the freedom to make bad and unhealthy life choices. If you believe in freedom, you have to give people the freedom to be useless pieces of crap, but the best thing you can do for them is to not enable them so don't give them food or money so that they are forced out of their laziness comfort zone to be a street sweeper or janitor or something at least to contribute to society.
Looks much comfier than the claustrophobia-inducing microscopic flats many of hongkongers have to endure (and pay costly for). Also, the place looks clean and the govt routinely feed them. The bridge is also underutilised. So its not quite so bad honestly
not everyone, and most people who are homeless aren’t drugs addicts. the few who are usually only become addicted after becoming homeless. so many people are homeless in america it’s almost impossible to keep it as clean as they do. the culture is different and the government isn’t as complete garbage.

liquidswordfish In general asia homeless tends to be cleaner n more orderly than the west. This is because many of the homeless are result of uncontrollable circumstances and not substance abuse. Not always but in general most homeless lose jobs or family n are put out on the street
Whenever I think about my problems, I would think of this saying "I was sad I had no shoes till I met a man who had no feet". We should be grateful for what we have, not sad with what we don't have.
Provocateur, in my hometown the homeless also break the law to go to prison. They call it "three hots and a cot". Sad thing is the prison is very near the Salvation Army homeless shelter by a few blocks, but the shelter is always overcrowded and those who can't get in go to jail because they're possessions are safe there and they tend to get a cell to themselves or with just one other person.

I think the real point is being missed here. The HK government is in the business of selling and speculating in land. That accounts for most of the government's (and the few property developer's) revenue. Even people who aren't on the streets are struggling to make ends meat, let alone buy a home. Meanwhile, the government consistently has budget surpluses of over $80billion usd every year, economists are calling it a structural surplus problem. It'd be quite trivial for the govt. to provide housing for all, once and for all, but they'll never do that, because it's in their interest to keep property prices as high as possible. How is it property prices are the highest in the world by far, but incomes are ridiculously low. Of course, they'd blame the lack of land in HK, but that is bollocks, as they could build bridges across the sea, smash mountain tops to fill in the oceans, with expedient efficiency for 'development' but solving social and environmental problems, never. Hell, there isn't even a grass pitch for kids to run around in the whole of HK. Oh and the higher ranks of officials in HK government have the biggest pay packets in the world. It's a blatant scam all round, but the idiotic sheep mentality of the people ensures the scam will continue to be more ridiculous with every passing day.
Good you brought this up... Unfortunately no one in Hong Kong wants a sales tax or to increase income tax ... so the government is reliant on land sales to fund what services it provides (which is relatively minimal for a city-state of it's wealth).
Lamma Bing, You are so knowledgeable. I admired your observation ! The 1997 agreement still made the British having the income from the limited land sale to support the economy in England. Solving the housing problem means the price of real estate would drop, the artificial beating up the cost of housing once no longer there, it means the income from Hong Kong is going down. Do you think England would allow this to happen ? Less money from Hong Kong for England ? Never, not until 2047 ! George Wu, ARCHITECT. A.I.A., NCARB 2018-9-16
I am only an architect, This is politics. It is beyond me ! My idea of using the shipping container to build low cost affordable housing is a very naïve one ! Just like years ago I designed (4) sky-bridges connecting (4) towers was a very naïve idea, after I found out that WTC7 collapse straight down like an controlled demolition ! Then , if 9/11 was an inside job, even there were (5 ) sky-bridges, still would not save any one ! George Wu, ARCHITECT, A,I,A,, NCARB 2018-9-16

1000 homeless people are not many for a wealthy country like HK. $500 for housing x 1000 people is only $500,000 a month. There are 7 million people in HK and if they donated 7 cents a month this problem is solved instantly.
Finding them a job is another matter. My idea was to give them housing. Then make them work. Lay bricks, clean toilets, something. If they are handicapped government still have to take care of them. Letting them stay on that bridge is not a sound solution. This is about lack of compassion more than anything.
+Eddie You are right it is not many. Which means they are doing far far better than LA or San Francisco, over 20 times better in fact when it comes to the number of homeless. The fact is there will always be some people who don't want to get their shit together or cannot. In that case they rely on charity or family. That's just life.
I live in Cape Town, South Africa which also has a problem with many people being homeless, estimated around 5 thousand. There are shelters in addition to many interventions by the city council yet the problem is growing especially given the impact of Covid 19. I believe more innovative solutions are needed such as utilising the areas under bridges which can not only be monitored but limited services such as ablutions, refuse removal, meals etc can be offered

It's a cultural thing. In places like Hong Kong or Japan it's unthinkable to leave mess for others to clean. It's a societal norm
Weird how clean and organized they are compared to the homeless I see in LA and the inland empire california
It is such a blessing to have a safe home and plenty to eat. Documentaries like these show just how much many take for granted. Thank you for sharing, and I sincerely pray that the people who live in circumstances that they don’t want to remain in are able to move into better ones.

The strength and dignity of these people is incredible. It's so important to make the most of what you have.😗
I love how they seem so civilized compared to the other homeless people in the world!!
I think the tough part about being them is more about living life aimlessly
It's not tough to find a spot to sleep, find some food to eat, or even afford some small luxuries like ice cream; physical survival is not the issue here
The mental anguish though, is a totally different story; imagine waking up everyday and not knowing what are you living for, not knowing why exactly do you even need to wake up
For most people, however small their goal is, there are at least things to accomplish everyday - wake up, go to work on time, do your job, earn your pay, so that you can pay your bills and afford all your stuffs; but for these people, it's just nothing
I can't even jmagine how depressing that must be
agree, living aimlessly is the worst nightmare i can think of ....i will commit suicide
That's why now i rather stayed in Shenzhen instead of HK.
The environment makes people depressing
You underestimate the power of laziness. Some people will exert more effort to avoid working than to just do the work. They could easily get a job at a fast food place and give themselves structure and get an apartment to share with a roommate, but they don't want to. The problem with freedom is that it gives people the freedom to make bad and unhealthy life choices. If you believe in freedom, you have to give people the freedom to be useless pieces of crap, but the best thing you can do for them is to not enable them so don't give them food or money so that they are forced out of their laziness comfort zone to be a street sweeper or janitor or something at least to contribute to society.

This world is so hard for so many people out there. Makes you appreciate what you have.
Looks much comfier than the claustrophobia-inducing microscopic flats many of hongkongers have to endure (and pay costly for). Also, the place looks clean and the govt routinely feed them. The bridge is also underutilised. So its not quite so bad honestly
it's NGOs who fed them, not government
that's why there are so many of them there

These homeless people are better than the ones in America. Their clean & by the looks of it not drug addicts
not everyone, and most people who are homeless aren’t drugs addicts. the few who are usually only become addicted after becoming homeless. so many people are homeless in america it’s almost impossible to keep it as clean as they do. the culture is different and the government isn’t as complete garbage.
It's because by the looks of it these ppl in Hong Kong lost everything due to bad luck. While the homeless in USA and Europe are usually homeless due to drugs or alcohol.
Not all people's walk the same , so you can't justify putting them in the same place, some of them have excuses that are understandable & none of them were born to live like that, to have nobody , no safe place , its a ouchie problem , it hurts you to see them struggling like that , every where , 😥

It's better than live under high way bridge which is very noisy !

@@Morisu-Chan Hong Kong isn’t a country, bro. I’m an HKer
Some elderlies do clean yes, and some young people also clean.
@@coolspot18 that's right!

Finding home to 1k people isnt thw problem tho the problem is finding them a job
our culture is the people must work hard to take care themselves
Finding them a job is another matter. My idea was to give them housing. Then make them work. Lay bricks, clean toilets, something. If they are handicapped government still have to take care of them. Letting them stay on that bridge is not a sound solution. This is about lack of compassion more than anything.
+Roy Not simply "your culture" it is life itself that says that. Success is based on work.
