Like, read your comments out loud while looking in the mirror and ask yourself whether you're describing absolute reality or if just being full of sh*t right now. And be open to the latter, which you'll find to be the case. Don't get offended, just trust me on this; make being consciously honest with yourself a habit and come back to this in about a year. A really tough concept to wrap your head around. Far better to meditate to a point where it becomes an observation of your awareness. But, the first step is to destroy the false notion. Being taught by Rupert that the way we are seeing and believing is the product of a mass belief system, helps to clean the slate, and start anew. His help is invaluable.

    The "materialist" paradigm vs. the "Consciousness" paradigm and their alternate impact on the future of humanity - love it! Non-Duality is more than individual spiritual liberation, but truly the science of human existence. The socio-political ramifications, alone, are worthy of academic research by universities across the globe. But, I wonder if it's an either/or scenario? I wonder if there might develop a transitional or interim paradigm that will be more accessible to the masses.

    The arguments are specious. Of course when we talk of "matter," it is a shorthand notation of certain sort of experiences we have. In that sense, we do experience "matter." There is nothing to be gained by the distinction.
    What is useful is that each of of us has a mechanism for interpreting reality - that is a flexible thing that we can mold and warp (to some extent) to our desire. That give power.

    • @owl6218
      @owl6218 6 лет назад +2

      he has not negated it. It exists, but forms out of consciousness, in it. Modern physics realizes that matter is formed out of excitation s of a quantum field, which is not a substance in the usual sense, it cannot be grasped, felt etc. Only thing added here is that that basic field is self aware - the purest form of self awareness which does not need to have any personal memories, perceptions, feelings to be aware of...matter forms out of consciousness, and then our bodies etc, and then comes a consciousness that bound to personal image etc, i.e.; the mind. That is how i understand it

    Rupert your heart is in the right place, in your body! There is no reality beyond body... The body is sitting on that chair, please, suffering is real, poverty, war, and on and on! There is no consciousness outside the body! Visit a hospital or a home for old people, I worked in them, I know! I was with my mum when she died, consciousness vanished with the body! Matter is the biggest part of our experience.

    • @Sydebern
      @Sydebern 9 лет назад +3

      I didn't recognize my grandfather when he had passed away because indeed, the consciousness/soul had left the body. But because you've seen the essence disappear from a loved ones' body is not enough to absolutely state that there is no reality beyond body. Reality doesn't work that way. Life/consciousness operates on many levels, of which the physical realm is the lowest. You only base your statement on that physical realm. The physical realm is only conceptual. You don't know on that level, you only believe.
      Did the love for your mother also vanish at the moment of her passing? That's the place where you have to put your attention.

    • @markbrad123

      Matter is energy vibrating that is just physics. Ask Einstein.

    • @Sydebern
      @Sydebern 9 лет назад +1

      optizap The definition of matter is a substance that occupies physical space. Matter as it is understood is composed of particles with size and weight. Matter is understood as being there, also when not perceived.
      What you describe is not matter, but that which quantum physics describes as waves, more precisely probability waves. These waves are dependent on the perceiver and thus confirm a reality of consciousness instead of matter.
      Believing what other (smart) people like Einstein say/said instead of your own experience keeps you in the realm of concepts/belief. Einstein was very smart, but you don't need to be able to do complicated calculations to know reality. Knowing reality is simple. Actually it is the most simple "thing" in existence. Creating theories about reality is complication and actually takes you further away from reality.

      Sydebern You want direct experience. Burn some wood - no belief required.

    • @ernestweber5207

      The root of the word matter means to measure. So, from that perspective, is our being strictly a matter of measuring what is, or is there something to the direct experience of perception itself? That is something you can check on and investigate for yourself.
      The perspective of non-duality may seem deep and even complex, but that is only because its utmost simplicity is not evident by way of occlusion and we begin to apprehend the layers of concepts and tangents of thoughts we find ourselves immersed in.
      When you consider that awareness is not measurement and that it permeates all experiences, as wetness does water, then you may realize that it has "nowhere to go". Having nowhere to go, where would it come from? Whereas, the patterns of experience change, come, go, appear, vanish. Does that negate the experience of them? Would any "experience" be possible if their were no dynamic involved? If everything came, but did not change or "go", then we might be living in one dense block of "stuff" as static as a Universe-sized boulder.
      in the case of the ceaseless change, when you contemplate that the "body" as you are thinking of it in relation to "matter" its components, (cells, atoms, sub-atomic particles) are never still, in fact, there is a tumult of motion, in that sense. If that body exists, then a definition of existence is in order. Let's say that an object should be permanent, self-contained and self-sustaining in order to actually "exist". To investigate that yourself, do you find that the body or your collection of thoughts and ideas of yourself and others actually fit that criteria? Does matter itself fit that criteria or are you experiencing a slow-motion, stripped down view of it that is functional and useful, but nonetheless an appearance of solidity and stability? After all, time is very useful to keep everything from happening at once, yet it is merely a measurement and relative.
      Non-duality can be approached basically and simply as I said, but being all-inclusive, vast and luminous, investigation into these matters is also possible and maybe useful in order to glean insight and illuminate our understanding.

    Well if I was able to ask a question I would want to delve into the existence of physical pain. Many people experience it on a daily basis with chronic conditions and I don't think it would be productive to try to talk somebody out of their Pain by saying it is an aspect of your consciousness. Yet it is entirely subjective. Doctors will tell you the level of pain of one patient is completely different than another. Unquantifiable as much as they might try. Psychic pain on the other hand such as might lead a person to suicide is a whole nother thing.

But here's the thing- you cannot be matter bound and think non-duality at the same time, i.e. matter is only a projection of the mind and such it doesn't exist in reality... now let's mine the Arctic before the Russians do it...

    How can we say with confidence that the nature of evil could not be a qualitatively different consciousness in “some way” and on this level of experience also? I do experience awareness as a primal force that all else appears in and out of. However, I also experience life with an intuition about a difference in the life forces (not forms) encountered. There seems to be a marked difference on the felt consciousness level of different people as typically confirmed by observed acts of harm to human beings in some way. And why does the infinite consciousness warn us? Theses are very interesting and mysterious ideas to consider.

    If the physical realm is only conceptual, why do wear clothes, eat, lastly, live in separate houses (homes)?

    • @Sydebern
      @Sydebern 9 лет назад

      Because without clothes we get cold, without food we get hungry. There is such a thing as common sense. And as long as the body is there, it is subject to the laws of physics.
      I don't deny those things. They are there, but they are there relative to consciousness. Concepts are very useful and even necessary for many things. But what i'm saying is that we create those concepts. They don't exist out of their own. We give the label 'body' to a certain part of our perception, yet our experience only is the knowing of perception (and thoughts/emotions). As Rupert pointed out in another clip: concepts are not a problem, absolutely believing in concepts is a problem. If you don't see that this is a problem, fine. That however doesn't change the fact that absolutely believing in concepts is the root of all problems and therefore the suffering that comes with that.

    • @d1427

      Sydebern i try to put non-dualism to an imaginary test [a real one would be really undesirable]: how would 'enlightenment' survive the circumstances of a concentration camp or other 'survival' circumstances, when the scarcity of food, clothing and other basic human necessities pushes the human psyche to extremes, changing people from 'homo to lupus'.
      The true test in these situations would be dealing with a consciousness that precipitates into the everlasting misery of a body-mind ridden by the pain of the flesh and suffering of the mind. Perhaps the individual suffering would be easier to take if if wasn't for the agonizing transformation of others around. It would seem to me that a truly 'enlightened ' individual in these circumstances would not have a chance to survive and wouldn't even care about it but i wonder how would he/she take the suffering of those body-minds while denying their reality and abiding in awareness...

    While not commenting on the veracity of the content, the reasoning is flawed. Subjective consciousness - finite minds - are what we ascribe to collections of sensory phenomena to explain them.
    We see a mouth moving. We hear words. We string them together and the phenomenon of 'someone speaking' is experienced. But we don't observe 'someone'. We see a mouth moving. We hear words. We perceive speech. The finite mind we hypothesize as being behind the speech is an attribution of cause; in the same way a force is a conceptualization of the relationship between two moving objects colliding and changing each other's behavior. Neither can be observed, except as a causal attribution.
    We may not observe mass, either. But we attribute mass to the body, in the same way we attribute mind to people, as an explanatory concept, an attribution of cause. It is simply how the finite mind receives, processes, and represents information.
    "In order to experience matter, we would have to find something outside the mind." In order to experience another mind, we would have to find something outside the mind as well.
    It is wholly possible that many finite minds exist. It is also wholly possible that they each perceive the same phenomena from many different angles, and colored by their individual structures. But there is nothing to suggest that it is so.

    Put that way, it makes mental sense... Not trying too detract, but we live iseparate abodes... Which give to the natural embodiment, expressive drives, sexual, possive and fidelty... How do we fit non duality into the bedroom......

    • @Sydebern
      @Sydebern 9 лет назад +2

      But the thing is that non-duality is impossible within the mental 'realm'. You can only go so far in mental/intellectual "understanding", which is actually only conceptual knowledge. At a certain point, one has to let go of the urge to understand and just be. It is only then that real spontaneous understanding can come. But true understanding cannot be grasped, you cannot hold onto it. In other words: you cannot put it into memory and retrieve it from there at a later time.
      It is not a question of 'how do we fit non-duality into such and such', because a 'person' trying to accomplish 'something' already is duality. The person cannot do anything, because the person is just a thought. How can a thought do anything? If there is a true yearning for non-duality, one has to transcend the person. There is no way around it.
      By the way, you can reply to specific posts. That makes it a bit less cluttered and more clear to read. ;)

      ***** Yes, that black hole seems to be the same "thing" as what we call 'deep sleep', which is that where thought can not go. Too bad McKenna focussed so much on phenomenal things like entities, worlds, etc. The 'black hole', that which seems to be aware of even consciousness seems to me where IT is at.

    With respect, Solipsism is the philosophical idea that only one's mind IS SURE to exist.
    The existence of an external world is regarded as an unresolvable question rather than actually false. There’s more to this if you care to look at it without bias. You inherited this wrong ideas from Francis L .

    The more I listen to Spira, the more my head hurts and the more confused I become and the more questions I’m left with. To argue that his whole convoluted theory of reality is self evident and experiential is really not true. I don’t have a problem with the concept of non duality, it’s the level that Spira takes it to to explain everything and with such certainty. I feel like he’s overreaching much of the time

      The experience of the body feels real and it is a real experience however the nature of it is not.The only reality is awarenss which has been localized to the body-mind.The same goes with children-its like you are watching a film on Tv where the actors feel themselves as real and they are also having children that the experience of it feels real in the film,however the only reality there is,is the screen where everything is projected on.

    • @ernestweber5207
      @ernestweber5207 9 лет назад +3

      That is understandable. One could say that the body is given a very deep pocket of change in duality, though.
      In order to emphasize awareness, it might seem that the body is de-emphasized. However, that can come full circle when you realize or experience awareness as the entire spectrum of experiences that awareness encounters and then view the body as a constriction of that entirety or a temporary structure of being. We could say that body and mind are a tight mesh of experience itself within awareness without deprecating either or casting them as only dualistic in nature. It is really the nature of our own experience that then determines if the body and intellect are merely secondary to something or integral and holistic in a reflexive sense.
      With rest and relaxation into the body mind itself, what does your experience reveal to you, especially if you find yourself free of labeling it and thinking about it? One requires comparisons in order to emphasize one aspect over another and non-duality points to direct experience itself in an all-inclusive light, which you are right now. That leaves you to explore the nature of relationships in a general way where an emptiness of concepts opens into a very spontaneous essence and a unity that is beyond an idea of oneness.
      Excuse me for being so detailed in responding to that. Simply, the body is a perfect manifestation of pure mind, just as it is and the patterns of beliefs and concepts about it are what determine the relative experience of it. With keen investigation into that and an open mind, it virtually deconstructs itself into pure awareness and a total presence that is definitely experienced leaving no doubt.

    Matter cannot exist for two reasons. On the macro level the universe is suspended in infinite space. The universe would have to have come from nothing. On the micro-level the smallest particle must always be made of something. And even if that something would ever be found it would have to have come from nothing. There is only one condition known to man where something is created from nothing and that is a dream.

    The running engine has simply drawn to itself from the illusion of having been a non running dead engine. The reality is actually the running engine. We need to stop our old habit of looking at a dead engine being the actual essential element to be there for a running alive engine to exist". Is it getting thick in here or what? :)

    Dear Rupert,
    I have been happily enjoying many of your talks here. Now, for the first time I disagree with you on the point you said "Solipsism is madness". Actually the whole universe with its all living and non-living objects is a creation of our mind - according to Advaita Philosophy. I really believe you approve Advaita Philosophy (Ramana Maharshi, Nissarga Datta, etc). It means my world is a projection of my mind. If this being the fact, then each and every individual I come across in my life should be illusory creations / images of my mind; right?. And this is the true non-duality (Advaita).
    Non-duality clearly says by realising ones true nature, by attaining enlightenment one understands that everything experienced in the world is consiousness and what exists is only awareness.
    Now, if your argument of billions of localisations (finite minds) were right, then how can the other localisations be images in my finite mind? and how will an individual (finite mind) disappear if he dies (the image vanishes) from my mind as he is a separate localisation and hence has independent existence from me?
    Kindly correct me if I am wrong or misunderstood you!

Try jumping out of an aeroplane without a parachute and saying “everything will be fine, matter is an illusion, the concrete ground doesn’t really exist “ 🤷🏼‍♂️ This kind of thinking is pure nonsense.
