Going into the 1992 Breeders’ Cup, at Gulfstream Park, Baffert was an unknown to everyone but Southern California racing fans. Having branched out into thoroughbreds just a few years before, Baffert had yet to win a grade 1 race, and had just one Breeders’ Cup starter up to that point. Thirty Slews, his lone starter at the 1992 Breeders’ Cup, was 18/1, off two straight stakes wins in California. This video kicks off our Breeders’ Cup in Florida Series. Thirty Slews was huge! I mean maybe the biggest horse I'd ever seen ! I was watching morning workouts that year at Del Mar, (still dark) And this horse comes out the gap, I knew who he was, Baffert saddlecloth, big grey) I was standing at the rail, he was walking on the outside, literally 3 ft. Away. And I had a Seabiscuit moment! He looked at me like what are you looking at, who the hell are you! A few months later, I'm in Vegas getting track odds, 19-1 I have a $3 exacta box with Sheik Ala abdou, they're showing he was acting up a bit, getting hot. Meanwhile, I'm looking at the form, and noticing there's no speed in this race! Meafara was the only speed! I was gonna change my ticket to a box with her, but it's 2minites before the race, there's a few people in line. So I decided not to change it! That was back when Exactas really paid 2 double digit odds horses ! Still, I had $40 to win and $10 to place o Thirty Skews, my biggest payout ever to that point..
Really! I don’t remember, lol!
Meafara... One of the best fillies not to win a BC. Twice second by diminishing margins. So fast!!!
The horse moved poorly before race and at that time apparently the jockey couldn’t report that and have the horse scratched.
I loved Rubiano! Now, it’s been decades , but wasn’t he better at 7 than 6? When he was good, he was great!
Remember this horrid break-down well. RIP poor Mr. Brooks. No one mentioned it yet?

I remember giving my father $20 to put on Mr. Brooks for me (I was 12 at the time). Still my most gutting gambling loss. RIP Mr Brooks.
