another example of "LOOK AT THE GRAPHICS OF OUR GAME. IT'S MADE ON UE5 SO IT LOOKS BEAUTIFUL" devs. just because you're using the latest game engine, and makes the graphics of your game looks nice and shiny. doesn't make it a GOOD GAME. you can have the most realistic graphics in your game. but when the gameplay is trash, then your game is trash.
the character animations, not only the grandmother, looks overly exaggerated and inhuman like. its like it was animated by an AI into what it thinks humans move. this is the video game equivalent of Birdemic. this is a showcase of an amateur tinkering with UE5 knobs and dials but dont know anything beyond that.
None of those are even the biggest issues. The biggest issue is that someone in charge okay'd this. "Yep that looks good for release" No matter what the reason for such a decision (greed, delusion, hubris, laziness, ignorance etc), its concerning
Great review. Short, straight-to-the-point, and less than 15 minutes. I always appreciate this. However, you mentioned a lot of bad dialogue but you didn't even demonstrate it to us like in 5:19. I was expecting to hear some of the gameplay VO after you said it but didn't. A good back and forth between your commentary and the game's audio would be much appreciated in future game reviews.
It's so janky on Series X.. Walking inside the house was a nightmare not because it was scary but because everytime I walked near ANYTHING, the camera would go nuts like shaking/twitching. The forest level was tedious. I typically like going different ways before going where I need to to check if there're items/collectibles but there wasn't really any point in this one. You just get meaningless jumpscares and notes of a small story you won't really care about. Then the combat. Having to press the aim button again and again if you run away to give yourself space or reload is annoying. Usually just hold it down and it re-aims in other games.. Then I encountered the first boss. Ugh lol. Ridiculous. I had to stop after defeating him. Game was annoying me more than anything.
I'm curious about the developer.. This would actually be pretty freakin impressive if it's like a single dude's first real game release.. Or even a small studio just getting it's feet wet.
He worked for Bloober Team and tried making Death of Rose. He also developed a prior demo called 'Cold World' but deleted the demo when it didn't bring in money.
Have you played Alan Wake 2? It has a lot of the same aesthetics and is actually a game. Would strongly recommend looking into it if you haven't. 20 hours in on hard mode and still going with the end seemingly still a ways off
@jarg8 Alan Wake 2 is kinda shitty until episode 3 😂 Lots of bugs too. And actually I've experienced the same bug that was in this video in Aw2, picked up shotgun ammo several times and it just didn't count I guess. Weird voice acting moments and not so great writing as well.
@@clockworkNate I loved the opening. It took the time to tell a story and being us back into a world we hadn't seen in 13 years. It really committed to the slow burn horror in a way that few games achieve despite that being a huge part of the genre. I've been playing for 30 hours and aside from the occasional audio glitch due to quick resume or one bug with flashlight animations, its been smooth as butter and the writing is brilliantly quirky, ambitious, and twists and turns very nicely. Very self aware and creative. Especially with the surrealistic fiction quality it has to it. To each their own, though.
@jarg8 I've had a lot of issues on ps5 eith ut, even a shitty raytracing bug that makes everything indoors look like it has glitter all over it. And the Nightingale fight was the worst. Annoying ass fight that just lasts too long, and he teleports right beside you and can take you fown easily with a hit or a stupid choke. And on top of that after I shot him enough times and he left the area, I was still grabbed and choked by an invisible Nightingale. And the Alan Wake parts seem like they were just tossed into the game because they made the entire game with Saga as the main character but knew fans would be upset if they didn't make Wake playable, so they're like screw it lets just put him in his own side crap and people can just play it whenever.
@@clockworkNate it seems like you aren't into the survival horror genre. Its all about patience, staying aware, playing conservatively, and persevering. Its a creative choice. Nightingale's fight is a call to step up and fight for your life. I loved that fight a lot because it told me what the game was ultimately going to be asking of me from that point on. I've been playing on hard and it took 6 or 7 attempts of learning and understanding how to navigate him with limited injury. Alan's sections are excellent due to their nightmarish, winding, and disorienting qualities. The enemies are also terrifying in that you must remain calm and move slow so as not to notify them of your presence. Having that added layer on top of the twisting, winding world is exhausting in the best ways. Its truly not for everyone and I can understand the frustrations. I am someone that doesn't like souls games so I know the feeling. But I love the slow pace paired with the increasingly intense and evil world. Both Saga and Alan have their place and I love how they gently connect with one another. They are bonded in suffering. But again, to each their own. For me it felt like the perfect sequel to make 13 years on. A culmination of everything they learned from Alan Wake 1, American Nightmare, Quantum Break, and Control. I'm very happy with the result personally
I thought Daniel would only start seeing the monsters in the playground because in the demo, he needs to find a gun and that demo takes place in said playground. And he acts like he never saw a monster before that point.
I never got the Faster shooting upgrade because it never triggered martha to get it from the interrogation room haha. but still the most annoying part for me is that you always have to release and press the aim button after reloading or getting hit, in most games keeping it pressed would make the character aim again. I had more trouble fighting with the bugs and lazy coding than the actual monsters in the game
The PC-Demo was underwhelming control-wise, with annoying enemies and cheap jump scares. At least the developers weren't lying about the overall product. :D
