This band never got the recognition it deserves.
I looked up 'Welfare Xmas'.

I like it that way...
@staceykersting705 I experienced a few There's not much joy.
They were pretty famous in the 90’s
Hits different when you’ve lived in a homeless shelter. I saw and lived sad things. Saw addicts and sadness. Wouldn’t wish it on anyone. Life will beat you to your knees and keep you there in permanently if you let it. It’s all about the absolute ability to show up. I hope you all show up. Love to all.
I love you. Thank you for Gospel Truth.
♥️
I agree 💯 I have lived like a queen and then there were times like living in the car and being pregnant so I'm so thankful for the roof over my head
Thank you
I've lived in cars, slept on the street, crashed at my friend's house and now I have my own little house I rent so this song really Hits me every time
As a former foster child, I cannot tell you what your music has meant to me. Thank you a million!!!
same
Me too . The mother was a gaslighter and the dad didn't care about even his biological kids . Tough times.
God bless youu🙏
Same here. Here's to the healing from that dark time ❤
Love this comment section. Former foster kid here. With kids of my own, still trying to break the cycle, and I swear the process is almost complete. 35 yrs old now. 🙏🏻
This song always makes me cry. I remember being 4 years old, in a uhaul with my mom and brother, driving to our new home that my mom bought after my father died. She had won a malpractice lawsuit against the doctor that had poisoned him. His death had literally bought us a new home in the suburbs. I remember driving down the road and my mom and bro singing this song and they were crying.... I didn't understand the tears. 22 years later, I do. RIP dad, thank you for our new life.
Man that's sad 😔
As a father and son, I'm sure that he was happy that through his passing it gave you, your brother, and your mom something nice, and safe.
I'm not crying, you're crying
It is so funny how money drives so much in this world , yet can actually mean so little compared to what really matters.
Man that’s sad 😞 how did the doctor poison him?
It has been almost 20 years and I am still loving this song more and more
Pakden Agogo truth. Probably my favorite Everclear song.
That must be the best feeling 🙂
Fadzil this song keep meaning more to me as it gets older
No Days off Adderall🌀
There music is timeless. I lived in Hermosillo Beach when they were at the top of the game. It was an amazing time to listen to music. Sublime-early No Doubt.
Reliving my ‘90s teen years by listening to songs that I didn’t much care for back then, like this one, and gaining new appreciation. Nostalgia is a strong drug.’
Nostalgia used to be considered a mental illness
Sure is. Like you, I didn't much care for these songs when they came out in the 90s. (I was born in '68, raised on the glorious rock n roll bands of the 70s and the wonderfully eclectic music of the 80s.) But I realize now the 90s were an excellent decade for music, the last of the great ones. I would go back in a heartbeat.

"I hate those people who love to tell you 'money is the root of all that kills.' They have never been poor. They have never had the joy of a welfare Christmas." Are some of my favorite lines in all of rock music. As a kid who grew up in Appalachia and was raised by a single parent, it hits way too close to home.
I used to listen to this song every day, leading a military convoy in Bosnia. Today the song popped in my head on the drive home and I was happy to listen to it again.
This guy is a badass! Thanks for serving and having great taste in music
Andy Purcell my husband drove for convoys in Bosnia, he was a Marine, served from 1997-2001. Were you there during that time?
I was there during 2001

You got that right! It brings tears to my eyes, the friends lost to distance and time.

Words of wisdom
I walked to work and the grocery store for the past three years. I weighed my vegetables at the store. I portioned my dog's food. Now, I just bought me an Audi a4, moving to south florida, going to buy my family what they need, and it feels real good.
Don't give up on your dreams.
My ex-husband dedicated this song to me. I loved him so much, but drugs took him, I had to get our boys away from that. Yet I loved him so much, he died a year later, at 27 from a massive heart attack... This song makes me think of him. I will love you forever.
Sorry for your loss 💖
My God. I'm so sorry. Drugs destroyed my childhood. Took my father from us. Died from his addiction too. Sending love to you.
My bf and I met 3-4 years ago. He use to do drugs back in the day.. now he is in his late 30’s. He also dedicated this song to me. Because of his past, his heart isn’t good. He’s been in and out of the hospital the past year. What’s hard. I never believed in soulmates until I met him and I’m worried.
My husband tortured me with Art’s music. He died of Crohn’s disease.
So sorry to hear this...😪🙏❤
They have never been poor. They have never felt the joy of a Welfare Christmas. Brings back a lot of memories of life after my dad left mom back in 1970. Obviously, the singer is scarred by a really impoverished childhood. That line resonates with me. It creates a "survival drive" that affects every facet of your life in good ways and in bad ways.
This. So true.
Same with me, but my dad didn't leave, he died
Art Alexakis, the lead singer, had a bad childhood. When he was 12, his brother committed suicide, when he was 13 his GF at the time committed suicide. When art was 14, he himself tried committing suicide. When art was a small child, his father left his mom leaving them poor. Sounds pretty awful to me.
My dad died he didnt want to leave my mom their mairege was perfect 1994 david Michael rawdon served in the air force during Vietnam and people think im crazy when loud gun shots make me laugh soothes my soul must of been the salute to his service at his funarel when i was 8 either way its been a good life 70's im sure he would of knew all about it im a 90's baby myself freaking mtv and computer robot aliens dude every one wants to be a comidian im a writer cratiec with a divine taste for riches in life i dont spell to good or write perfect im just a bad man with a good heart
4 years later and you're spitting hard facts man
"i moved in with the strangest guy, can you believe he actually thinks that i am really alive?" this beautiful, insightful line describes exactly how i felt after a huge break-up many, many years ago. this album and this song gave me incredible solace...and stayed with me as i started to realize that i was, in fact, really alive. thank you, everclear.
+Stephen Velez that one always gets me, reminds me of a roommate that took me in after a terrible break up
It's "really a lie" not alive. The whole point of the song is that he's making empty promises, that's why it's ironic that he's incredulous that his roommate thinks he's a lie
i've listened to this song a hundred bazillion times...as far as i'm concerned, it has to be "really alive." if it's not--tho, i think it is--i still can't change it in my head and heart. "can you believe he actually thinks i am really a lie" doesn't make much sense to me. but that's the beauty of music and all art: sometimes we make our own meaning. to me this song isn't about empty promises, it's about desperation and heartbreak, and the feeling that one will do anything to get the love of your life back. i think when alexakis promise "a new house" he's being figurative: "i'll do anything for you, just please come back."
I've always thought it said "living a lie" which makes perfect sense to me given the context of the video especially.
It's "really alive"...frankly, anyone who interpreted that line any other way, "really a lie....living a lie etc"...is completely missing the whole message of this song. That line is perfection in it's melancholic simplicity and bare, honest self-awareness.
This song meant a lot to me when I was experiencing long-term unemployment and financial hardship. Comfort during times of despair.
My boyfriend didn’t have a good childhood, absent mom, family difficulties, addiction. He has grown into the most amazing man and strives to give us everything he couldn’t have. I think about him every time I hear this ❤️
16 YEARS , I MET MY HUSBAND ON THIS SONG , LOVE THE SONG HE USE TO SING , HES GONE , BUT U GUYS R NOT , GOD BLESS

The 90s was such a unique time for music. Especially alternative rock. Remember listening to the radio and almost every song played was awesome. Feels so fortunate to have my childhood in the 90s. Have an awesome day everyone!
Well, the fashion did suck…but culture?? PERFECT! The Soviet Union fell, leaving Russia in shamble but my family was much happier when communism was over

This song is helping so much rn. I grew up in the suburbs and now I’m struggling to find people I grew up with who have actual empathy to help me find a stable place. Thank you for this song!!!
Hate to admit this but this video gives me goose bump at the end...I can almost feel his emotion to her and her's back to him and it makes me happy she opens the door. It's about love and redemption, and I'm glad no one can see a big tough guy like me with a tear in my eye over how sweet this song is. Shhhh, don't tell anyone....
Secret's safe with me, pal!
Your secrets safe pal but, I would be remiss not to tell you that having the courage to admit this openly would make you even BIGGER AND TOUGHER!

My Mama used to pick me up and dance with me to this in the kitchen when I was little. 😭 Also came out during a time when we were very poor, but so happy to just have each other. I used to tell my Mama that when I grew up I would buy her a new life like the song. So many happy tears right now💖
No one took it. It will always be with you.
I play this song on repeat to silence my pain and broken heart. It's a bit bittersweet as a single mother who's doing it all alone. Wishing for some warrior to come by. This song is just so beautiful as well as the whole album god 🤗💙💔😥

There were threats of poison gas and physical abuse its all detailed in my book My Dad was a horrible person ....... Lol its a thankless job Morty
I hope his life is much better now. For the record $ does not equal happiness
Saw these guys in concert, the way they talk about their family and how their life is going, it seems like they realized things are goin alright. They have hearts of super gold! Thanks men for showing to Pittsbugh at Jergels. This is the best song of the 90s for this rythm, Weezer's Beverly Hills had the beats, but not the lyrics and the feels. Green day didn't swipe it right... This is the PERFECT version. Screw money, but lets work so we can use it to help others! AMEN! Love is eternal.
God, I miss the 90s
+Chrisander1606 It was a great time.
The 90's were a much happier time for the country though. The 70's to me was vietnam, the corruption of NIxon, and the general incompetence and bad economy of Jimmy Carter. Although not a fan of Bill Clinton the economy was strong for most of the decade and people had jobs.
I agree, F ankle socks and kanye west
Chrisander1606 the 9os music even when it was sad was still up beat. i feel todays generations music ia terrible and they are missing out on a lot of great music.
Andrew Nelson I know what you mean... 90's music was way more sincere than this auto-tuned generated junk that is only meant to appeal to the lowest common denominator

Promises, promises... these things don't mean anything to you.. but someone continually tells you you'll have them, but all you want is for that person to just be with you and take care of you and be there for you which never happens. Then you meet the one, the one who has struggled like you have, the one who has hurt like you have, the one you have no expectations of, and he does all these things for you and more..because he loves you completely.

I was reading about the lead singer, he's a really big sweetheart. He grew up poor and lived in a black neighborhood being the white kid. He saw what it was like to be poor and the struggles everyone had. So it influenced his personality and views hugely. ♡ His brother died from a heroin overdose, and his girlfriend committed suicide the same year. Poor guy is now a political activist and has campaigned for drug awareness policies. For someone who was both poor and a now sober opiate addict, I'm very thankful for people like him.
This song was released the year I was married. My husband would sing it to me in the car. Last month was 25 years, he’s made good on every one. We are finally buying (building) a new house, way in the west hills. 💜 That was his 25th Anniversary gift to me.
Congratulations!!
This comment brought me to tears 😍
My boyfriend actually sang this to me in the living room of our apartment, it really moved me because we've been through so much together and I am truly appreciative he sang such a beautiful song with genuine feelings. :)
Literally Denise Richards most beautiful role as an actress-- she seemed to pull something genuine and pure forward in her acting for this scenario. And yes, this song is one a lot of young women dreamed they would hear in one form or another from a loved one. An acknowledgement that we stood by you during the bad times, will you take us with you for the good times or "trade up?" So many beautifully, sad, profound, (and maybe a little toxic) memories connected to this song and video.

omg I never realized the "circle" around them was her looking through the peephole. I thought it was just "artsy" lol
Me neither!
I love this song. It means a lot to me.
They might make you think your happy, maybe for a minute or two, they can never make you happy the way that I do. My thoughts went to those words when my wife of 20 yrs Left me and took my kid for the guy she cheated on me with. ( Who has 5 kids with different mom's and was still living with his moma )! Those words cut me deep as well as this song to this day. To bad there some relationships that can't be fixed nor can the hart's and trust that have been broken.
I remember this song. Means so much differently now that I have a husband and a kid. Money isn't stable lately which is one of the things we fight about. He tries to hide the things that make me worry, which makes me more worry when I find out. But I know he's doing his best to make us happy and I tend to forget how I to appreciate the little things he does for me and the hardest things he does that I don't know about. He's not perfect but I know he'll do anything for us.
80's baby raised in the 90's, matured in the 2000's, experienced in the 10's. Hands down best music came out of the 90's, for all genres.
Can you believe he actually thinks I am really alive. Such deep and meaningful lyrics
Song makes me cry because in the 90s, I mostly remember my mom staying up late and crying into her hands - Dad wasn't interested in being with her, even though he fathered 3 kids. I kind of always felt responsible for the heartache (just my kid mentality). Now, I'm repeating the same cycle with my own kids (song hits harder then ever). #2021

I was obsessed with this album for a little while there.
This song reminds me of growing up with my parents arguing over money and being poor all the time. They worked so hard, both of them, but were so unhappy. I didn't mind being poor as much as I minded listening to them yell at each other. It isn't that money doesn't matter, I just wish they knew that I was fine being poor, I just wished they could have happier. They ended up getting divorced when I moved out. I sometimes wonder if they still would be together if they weren't poor. Money was what they argued over the most.
You said it perfectly. Same thing happened in my family
I hope you can have a loving and full life with a partner that puts love first.
Dang...i wish I was there for you. I grew up poor as hell but had good friends. I'd be there for you.
It's one thing to be poor when you're young - at least you know it's not your fault. Being poor when you're old - when you had at all before and bulloxed it up - that really sucks too. Just in a different way.
Sad I'm sorry I bet a million people have gone through that. Fucking money sucks
Love this song!
My new life is still lonely without you, even after all of these years. RIP Tom.
How can a band with so many hits have only 32 thousand subscribers on the channel? I'm 36 years old and I've been listening since I was 15! EVERCLEAR R0X !!!
