    The red fog following the boy is obviously meant to symbolise the explosion that killed him always trying to remind Parvana who has blocked out the memory. Him sleeping and being in the middle of the red fog is also obviously meant to symbolise him being engulfed in the explosion.
    I also think that the red fog turning into a horse and the boy making friends with it and then later leaving it behind is meant to convey Paravana coming to terms with the memory, accepting it and ultimately moving on from it.

    I just saw this movie for the first time. It should have won many Academy Awards, there was serious drama in this movie and the Animation was excellent, you really got to know the characters, and the extreme stress that was going on in their country at that time, as the story built up, it just got deeper and deeper. I plead for a two- parter on this one. This was so well researched so far but I feel we didn't even scratch the surface yet. I haven't watched the movie in a while but I believe there is a lot more to say about the characters and true female empowerment in comparison to most modern cinema and how instead of giving a women masculine traits to show "women can be strong too" this movie actually bothered with exploring the complexity of it and portrayed characters with actual strong feminine traits. The wisdom to know when to hide and when to fight and and the skills to strategically navigate in such a society. Restraint , knowledge, critical thinking etc etc. Again I haven't watched it a a while but that's the themes that stuck with me.

    • @moviemonarch1617
      @moviemonarch1617  3 года назад +7

      I would LOVE to do a two-parter. In fact I had WAY more to say about this film than what you see. But while making this my 'Song of the Sea' video was slapped with a copyright claim (from a company not affiliated with Cartoon Saloon) and a strike was lobbed against my channel. I fought it but RUclips sided with them.
      Before the edits I was looking at analyzing the use of colors, the names, the cast, the crew, the books, gender roles, and the debate about whether or not this film is an example of cultural appropriation. But RUclips ruined my plans when it decided to pay someone else for my labor.
      So I really am sorry because you seem like a genuine fan. You deserved a hell of a lot better, but until I get a Patreon account this is all I felt comfortable sharing.

    this has been a really well explained video although i have to disagree to that part where you called parvana an 'idiot'. rather than that harsh description, i'd like to say that she is innocent for she is a child, she probably does not understand how or why that tragic war even exist. and i think that is one of the beauty this film possessed. we are watching the film in parvana's perspective and as grown ups like the adults in the film, they know parvana does not know anything of the tragedy that has been happening. she's a child who very much deserve a decent childhood but the circumstance that she is in, does not allow it. so yeaa,, what i just wanted to say is that she still is a child, pure and innocent wanting to bring baba (his father) back, not an idiot who just merely blinded by hope. :< but, overall, this really has been an insightful analysis! (sorry for rambling so much)

    Found out about this film on Film Week a LOOOOOOOONG time ago but then finally sat mah butt down enough to watch it.
    Film's sobering in three ways for me:
    1. I know shit about the Cold War. Most I could grasp my mind around are the banana republics in the southern hemisphere, Vietnam, and some bits and pieces of China and Korea. Took a video game series dropping a *lot* of Cold War info to finally piece together the drama of the Space Race
    2. Taliban's getting openly emboldened by the USA's troop withdrawal last I heard, and the part I hate the most, having understood more of what we've been doing since the 2000s, is that even ending involvement won't stop what those people are going through. Like, I don't really know enough facts to know how I *should* feel so I'm getting *all* the feelings of "FUCKER FUCKER FUCK NIHILISM IS THE TRUTH!!"
    3. NPR reported a study of Muslims represented in film in the last few years and they were only 2% of the characters, most were foreigners, violent and/or victims of violence, and 1 in 5 were killed. In all my memory, this is the only film I can think of where Muslims were treated like people.
    I don't care how evil Disney is if they make a decent adaptation of Ms. Marvel I'm buying a fuck ton of tickets. Hell maybe give 'em to a local mosque I dunno bored guilty white guy shit.
    Also I'm adding Wolfwalkers to my universal 'BDay/XMas' wish list.
    Glad to see you're doing more projects, and if you're even thinking of expanding to TV series I'd to see your take on Tuca and Bertie.
    Although I have to give a non-ironic, non-condescending trigger warning for that show

    • @moviemonarch1617
      @moviemonarch1617  3 года назад +1

      I promised myself I wouldn't do another TV series after the hell I went through doing Black Sails. But if I did, I would probably eschew anything bird related as I have a deep hatred for the fowl beasts (eh? see what i did there?).
      Anyway if I was going to do another TV series I would prefer one that is completed, as it would allow me to do the entire thing as opposed to a chunk that could then become problematic with additional seasons.
      As for how to feel about Afghanistan's plight...well there's never going to be an easy answer or a simple solution. Hell, just researching for this video lead to four breakdowns. Not fun. But I imagine it's a lot worse for those living it. Which is why I think the best path we in the west can follow to help those affected by our government's foreign policies is by doing the research and being informed. Vote for people who will actually DO something to help. Grass roots campaigns and aid agencies like doctors without boarders, the red crescent, water well programs, and educational programs for children that aren't sponsored by religious groups would be a tremendous help. So no offense to nihilism but I think Angel put it best when he said if nothing we do matters than all that matters is what we do. If there's no bigger meaning then the smallest act of kindness is the greatest thing in the world.
      Be that small act.

    I didn't catch all of the more political subtext that directly influenced the movie and the book, being from America I just vaguely understood maybe the US might've been involved. But I liked the idea of stories and how they're used, it's actually relatable in that I tend to tell stories for comfort. In fact, I have a family member who tells a lot of stories, perhaps it's how they cope with their past too, actually. Inter-generational trauma plus your own trauma from life would do that to you. Just replace Middle Eastern wars with American slavery, segregation, possible medical racism, etc.
    It's an oddly universal story in it's own way.

And what was the point of the Mujahideen may I remind you? To repel a foreign invader seeking to impose their ideology on that region? Seems a bit like anti-imperialism goes away when it's not America doing it. Pls Don't reply, I don't want this argument to continue bcs I recognize arguments with ppl online is dumb and frankly useless bcs we both know full well we can't change each other's mind, I just typed this bcs ...frankly i just woke up and my head ain't that clear so I forgot the rule to never reply to anyone and now I Don't feel like deleting it all. Have a nice day.

    You mean the U.S provided the Mujahedeen with Stinger SAM missile to fight against Russian Gunship that was practically massacring the Afghani people. The U.S. gave them a fighting chance. Of course, your Western narrative will ignore the atrocities committed by the other axis of power. We got involved, we gave a group of people a fighting chance to fight for their country, their families, and their culture. You would not get that.

      You're right. It's too complex of an issue for my feeble mind to grasp. Good thing you're here to educate me on one facet of one battle of a war that is so complex it's impossible to do it justice in an 8 minute video. Which, you know, I already stated. But like that matters. No, the only thing that does is that you're right I'm wrong, and by gum you're going to show me how with all the non sequitur facts you know. Whew! Am I ever blushing. Thank you. Thank you kind stranger for showing me the error of your assumptions on my education with the lack of yours. Eye opening. Truly. Have a wonderful day!
