- I BET YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN BOOKS LIKE THIS BEFORE!!
Tim welcomes a friend of his to the Grand Illusions studio - Gerard Darby - who has an amazing collection of unusual books, books that have been 'altered' in one way or another, and who has brought along some wonderful examples.
A book that now has a window in the cover, since you cannot open it anymore, and inside the pages have been cut away, revealing a whole collection of characters. With a bit of imagination, you may be able to work out a story that will connect them all. A lovely way to bring your characters to life!
A book about wild birds that has an internal viewing window, and a collection of feathers on display.
' The Art of Angling' book contains - a three dimensional cut out section that looks like a reservoir. And sitting on the side is a tiny figure, hoping to catch a fish.
A Slovenian artist has created two internal worlds inside a book - the pages have been cut, and she has also drawn on the pages. There seems to be a little figure in a red cloak in one of the scenes - could it be Little Red Riding Hood?
A book about wolves contains some paper cut outs of wolves. Very delicate work!
Then a very large book - The Lord Of The Rings! A artist who creates jewellery has made a ring, with hobbit writing on the inside, and has made a hole in the pages of the book where the ring can be stored! Can it be the One Ring To Rule Them All? Tim tries it on and... vanishes! So maybe it is!!
Gerard commissioned the design inside next book. It is an old atlas of the UK, and on the double page that shows London, an artist has used a fine pen to draw lots of black lines which show - Charles Dickens!
The next book has a spooky forest inside, and nestling between the trees - a haunted house. A small adjustment at the back of the book, and... the lights have come on in the haunted house - someone must be at home! Quick - run away!!
The next book in Gerard's collection of 'altered books' is actually the very first one he acquired, it contains two 'fore-edge' paintings. Strangely enough he was inspired by seeing a similar book on a web site called... 'Grand Illusions', many years ago.
Finally, a book called 'Phoenix Rising'. Inside is the phoenix, rising from the fire - lots of the pages seem to have been singed! This is the one book that can't be closed. Наука

Absolutely beautiful.

Yeah
You can now play as Gerard Darby
Man, that 14-year grind was brutal.
Didn't expect a guest, nice to seem Tim spend time with others that share similar interests.
Wouldn't mind to see Tim compare Nick nacks with other toy collecters
He was a Great Assistant in the Grand Illusions Vanishing Act ;)
Can you do more of these guest episodes? it's great to see some curios from the friends of tim
Glad you liked it. We did film a few more videos with Tim and Gerard. They will be appearing over the next month or so.
It was kind of nice to see him have a conversation with another guy in one of these videos
Quality editing for that gag, Gandalf!
Can't wait for Tim's playthrough of Elden Ring
@Santow Megaph no way you actually think that you old lmao. dark souls came out in 2009, i think people still know what that is ;)
@Santow Megaph I'm amazed it's still relevant now- given the shelf-life of online games.
Elden Ring IS a souls game.
Dark Souls was 2011, you're thinking of Demon's Souls coming out in 2009
i absolutely love when people who arent artists can sit together and discuss the artistry behind something, it actually almost made me tear up. an artist wants nothing more than for someone to speak of their work with this regard
That was fascinating, thank you. I so enjoyed seeing that gentleman's collection. His books are all so beautifully done, bravo to the artists that created them. 😊👏
I need to start collecting pieces like these for my bookshelf! What a cool thing to show guests!
What a marvellous episode. Absolutely delightful!
It’s just pure joy from start to finish.
I remember doodling hidden words and pictures on the edges of my school books just because I was so bored. Nowhere near the Arabian Nights, of course, but glad to know somebody could make an art out of that.
LOL Tim vanishing was so unexpected :D
Tim is the Gandalf of Toyland! 😊💍
More like Smaug
More like Smaug
More like Smaug
More like Smaug
These pieces give me a certain type of childish joy and inspiration I couldn't compare. I am very glad I found this channel.
I died of laughter from the editing of the ring! Lol so precious!
Yay, now he got friend that collect fascinating books
What a delight, it's been a long time since Tim had a guest on, hope we can see more like this in the future!
I'm glad to her some of Tim's interest outside of toy, hearing talk about lord of the rings is heartwarming
What a fantastic collection. Tim should have more guests with interesting collections of their own.
It's amazing how this channel and the grand illusion team have inspired many more people to become collectors just like team. Big thank you to the guest and hope more will be making an appearance.
absolutely loved this one, amazing art, and honestly didnt see the vanishing act coming haha
Beautiful collection
What a wonderfully fascinating video, Tim and how lovely to see your friend show those altered books by those very talented artists.
I love when there are guests on show, it doesn't happen often but it's always so fun
That little red riding hood book looks so cool!
As a Slovene I must quickly make amends to our Slavic bretherin, before too many of them find out. The red book presented here "Slovenske Spisovatelky" by Zuzka Zguriška is indeed Slovakian, NOT Slovenian. 😂😂😂
the "curse" will never go away. First they mixed everything Slovenian to be Slovakian and now the otherway around 😅
glad to see I'm not the only prick from Slovenia watching this channel
@@zjan3421 Prick ziher nisi edini, hahah.
čak k bom podstreho odprl... bo vidla meditacijo. Hoarder Deluxe.
Ej, najlepše si opisal Tima, nekaj kar sam ne bi znal tako ubesedit. Otroška fascinacija nad igračam in tista odrasla želja po kolekciji, ki vrta nekje pri srčku hehe.
Krasno. Škoda da nas ni več takih.
oooooo! i like this take. i love seeing guest's on it to explain a bit more! i hope to see more like this!
What fascinating and creative things people can do with books forging such joyful experiences :D Thanks!
Absolutely wonderful! I have come across books which have the pages cut to hide something inside, but I've never seen this before. Fascinating! 👍
Amazing he just disappeared in front of our eyes
Thanks for this incredible videos Tim
Wonderfull episode. Like when you share passion with other collectors
What a marvelous book and the look of wonder on Tim's face is great.
"I'm a big fan of Lord of the Rings."
"Have you read it?"
"No."
Maybe just seen the film?
Just the one?
Real lovely one. This episode is AMAZING.
I’d love to see guests from time to time. Tim talks so much about his friends, it’d be cool to see them!
What a great collection and collaboration!
I loved the guest appearing on the show! This channel is one of my favorites!
Loved this video! The Phoenix Rising book was truly incredible, I have no clue how they managed to do the singed pages. Perhaps they got help from the servant of the Secret Fire, wielder of the Flame of Anor.
Gonna be honest it surprised me when Tim disappeared, I wasn't expecting them to do that
Ah, my dad would love that angling book. Great episode, GI team!
Great idea Tim to see others on your show letting us see different arts and collections look forward to next one
This was a fun and awesome video! I definitely got 'antique roadshow' vibes!
So if I get a cool collecting hobby I could do a cameo with Tim? Interesting... 🤔
Might be one of the Three or the other lesser rings :p
Beautiful. I especially like the one with the carved in forest scene.
I almost shit myself when the camera panned and showed the guest 😅... I wasn't expecting that
Cool!
Tim, when ever I watch your videos, they make me laugh, and makes my day, keep going, your making you make our days ☺️
These are truly works of art. I especially love the first one because it also works as a collage that resembles a movie poster or a novel cover.
I got David Brent/Micheal Scott vibes from Tim here, talking over him with "yeah yeah yeah" it was hilarious and all unconscious I'm sure. Books were nice too.
Awesome art books 👍
Incredible. The art really is magnificent
This was amazing! Please, more guests!
Podcast with Tim, Gerard and Michael Rosen. Make it happen.
Fantastic.
I lost it at 7:50
Wonderful
Splendid and interesting. A nod to some aged techniques of secret messaging among the fascinating art too. Marvelous.
This channel is an eternal delight.
Mr. Darby's quite a bookworm
So cool!!
I bet The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe would make an amazing piece. especially if they could make the book cover look like the doors to a wardrobe cabinet.
Amazing.
Outstanding! I enjoyed every word on every page! I really was only interested in the pictures.
I like him having a guest on
NICE. I am a book lover with my own small library. I don't have any altered ones. In fact, I've got a sort of pet-peeve about them: folded pages and/or writing in the margins and/or highlighted sections. I HATE THAT. But if I had one altered, it would be for the sole purpose of the art itself, not the book. :)
Amazing
I love guest episodes! I would totally buy a high quality print of that Charles Dickens piece, that's super clever and creative.
Superb. 📡👽🇺🇸 RUN!!!
Love reading. Love books. Gorgeous art, but this kills me. All of those books were in excellent shape and had decades of reading left in them if kept in loving hands. 😞💔
i shat myself at church
marvelous i gotta get onr of those ^^
That was facinating
Magnificent Tim
Amazing books
And awesome edit with the ring
Glad you liked it
Simplemente fabuloso. 🤗
I love that tims collabing now
I love you guys.
Interesting to hear from Tom and Gerald
Love lord of the rings. Fun story time, my father actually grew up with Elijah wood (who acted as Frodo in the films) in Iowa, USA. He tells me stories left and right about how they were a bit of trouble makers and also, his nickname was Woody.
Gotta say i love that intro
Just wow
pretty nice book
Books always teaching us they are forever
Want one
7:45 😲
That is a very interesting book
Interesting
7:50 Did not expect that :D
All makes sense now. Tim has access to one of the rings of power.
That phoenix is amazing
A new guy approaches! Tim has a friend(even though he knew him for a while lol)
A guest?! We have a guest!!! Get this man some Water from the Nile!
Wow
i neeed the necronomicon!
You can now play as Gerard Darby
We got a guest let's gooooo!
Tim loves the lord of the rings.
there is a wonderful artisan called Kit Davey who does great things with books
Tim has the ring 👁
i want a set of the LOTR books like that, each with a memento from the book
but like, i want the 6-book version wherein each book (fellowship of the ring, two towers, return of the king) is split into the two sub-books
