- Star Trek The Next Generation Captain Picard promotes Wesley Crusher from acting-ensign to full Ensign. I sometimes cry when I see this. Wish the right people would done/saw the same in me. (From ending of episode Menage La Troi)
Развлечения
He got promoted faster than Harry Kim
+Peter Kalemkerides yup but new Kirk got promoted faster. You think with the mistake of Wesley Crusher Star Fleet would have learned its lesson by now. Don't promote before their time.
Peter Kalemkerides Harry never got promoted, till the last episode
Actually, Wesley's promotion was well deserved and thought out. It was part of the ongoing character arc that the writers screwed up at the end.
You are right about Kirk though - giving a barely graduated cadet command of a Constitution Class straight from the get go. After the first Abramsverse movie, give him a commendation and send him to a ship to actually start getting the real life experience as an officer. If I remember my original timeline Kirk correctly, this included cargo officer on the Republic, tactical officer on the Farragut, Second officer on the Constitution, 3 turns as first officer, and command of 2 other smaller starships before getting the Enterprise. The original Kirk learned his craft right and to quote Abramsverse Pike "respected the chair".
Daniel Haire Can you ask where you read about Kirk's other captencies? I had never heard that. Thanks.
Daniel O'Donovan His career was referenced in multiple novels authorized by Paramount in the 1980's. Also, Kirk was tactical officer on Farragut when it encountered the gaseous lifeform that killed several crewmen (TOS referenced).
Wesley was told to put on a proper uniform. Meanwhile, the ship’s therapist who outranks him still dresses in a catsuit.
Yes. She does. :)
@Koulnis Not entirely accurate. Captain Jellico demanded a certain sense of professionalism on his bridge. We can all thank that great man for getting Troi into a proper uniform befitting her rank and position.
The theory was that a military officer in a uniform might be seen as intimidating. But Troi should have worn a uniform while on the bridge, since she was serving a non-counseling purpose.
there was an episode where she said she carries the rank of lutenant and in 1 episode captained the enterprise
@@aaronrichards2842 Probably an error. I think Troi was always a LT Commander, until S7 when she attained Commander rank. Given that he was third in command, Data probably should have been promoted to Commander as well. I mean, if Riker hadn't been so reluctant to accept his own ship, he'd have been first officer long ago.
One of my favorite moments in any Star Trek show. Wes TOTALLY rocked that uniform. Plus, it was cool to see all eight primary cast members on the bridge together, to celebrate the occasion.
georgi in his standard arm configuration - lol
So true 😂
I was was just thinking what are they all gonna do or talk about on such a mundane trip. But now I realized they were there for him.
I think the uniform went to his head.
Nearly everything Wesley did after this was a disgrace.
ya but it dosent make sense for him to have to go to the academy with a field rank seven didnt have to
His "mum" sitting there looking like an absolute goddess as always with those looks she always gave. I never hear him talking about will and gates relationship on the show.
After hearing what a rough time this was for Wil, and how the Trek crew were his true family; this scene means all the more.
One of my favorite tear jerk scenes of the series. This and when the little boy who lost his family is on board the Enterprise. He tells Picard he feels alone, and Picard assures him that "No One is alone on the Starship Enterprise." Also when Data saves that alien, whose planet is falling apart around her and he beams up with her and holds her hand.
also when picard says "what did you say?" to the borg drone who refuses his orders and later when that drone takes a last look at geordi
@@pseudopulk3478 yes, the Borg episode involving Hugh. Incredible writing, perfectly delivered. This show is such a treasure. I know a lot of fans resent Wesley, but growing up with this show as a teenager, made this adult show more relatable. Made me feel that a young person, if precocious enough, could find a place on a starship and explore the grandeur of space..
Gods I miss this show, what a grand television family to have grown up with.
Its on netflix
Love TNG but DS9 took Star Trek to a whole new level to the point we start adoring the Ferengis.
TNG were literally a family travelling the cosmos which we love but DS9 were literally the ballsy, unsung, underdog heroes of the franchise which envies beyond! Made me love O’Brian and Worf even more as a characters and even Keiko lol
Well your in luck a remake is in the works based on the kelvin timeline
Yes..besides DS9, last great ST show!! Greatest of all time!! Even better than TOS!
Oh you don't like the insanity of cultural marxism infused into every show possible and everything being also made into bisexual porno? Lmao
People watch the new Picard series and say "Picard Missed out on the experience of being a father" --- did you not watch The Next Generation????? The relationship between Picard and Wesley was father-son. Fans seem to forget that Picard looked after Wesley, taught him, nurtured him, was strict with him, and on some rare cases showed him respect and recognition. That is what a father does, he prepares you for the world, he doesnt coddle you. Despite all of his flaws, Picard always gave Wesley a chance and that was all he needed. I personally liked his character. Some hated him being whiny, but he is a teenager he looks at life through a different perspective than Starfleet guidelines. All the hate that Wil Wheaton got for his portrayal of Wesley is undeserved, I am glad that he turned out so well and avoided any scandals in life.
Wesley was one of my favorite characters on TNG. He deserved to be promoted to Ensign. Beverly must have been so proud of him.
So true! And you can see her beaming 😇
Me too
Sure, just make the teen without a diploma an ensign. 😂
The women were so Proud of him🤩looking sharp in Starfleet threads doesn't hurt either. Decorum wouldn't allow Riker to smile back, but the way he he tilted his head, raising his chin towards Wes seems to express Well Met, Ensign Crusher, welcome to the bridge at your Full Rating.
@@epaminon6196 He was also among the most talented humans ever shown in the series, capable of keeping up with senior officers in multiple fields. His time at Starfleet Academy was likewise exceptional, disconsidering the reprimand received by the events leading to the death of cadet Joshua Albert.
Patrick Stewart always put so much effort into the nuance and complexity of these one on one Ready Room scenes.
I will never forget that moment when Wesley steps onto the bridge in his uniform. It was AWESOME!
I was happy not to have to look at that dumb gray jumpsuit anymore. Plus, he looked good in the uniform.
only to be demoted to cadet once entering the accademy
Yeah, with that swelling up soundtrack.
So true, @QS. I don't know why people hated on Wesley so much, because I always loved episodes where Wesley was a main character that had scene time.
"Aye, sir. Course is set."
"Shut up Wesley."
"Lwaxana Troi has beamed down to the planet's surface Sir."
"Good, get us out of here, Maximum Warp!!!"
😂
"Warp 10! Hell, go to Warp 11, just get me out of here!"
ENGAGE!!!!
Is that going to be fast enough?
@@oddish4352 with warp 10 you would be everywhere in the universe which would include being next to Mrs Troi
"It's about time!"
2:08 Brent Spiner doesn't have any lines but remembers to do his head tilt towards Picard that he always does. Then he continues his jerky but precise movements as he works on his console. The dude was great.
And to think he was a hillbilly in Night Court! 👍
Whatever your opinion of the character Wesley Crusher, you have to admit this is a very nice, "warm-and-fuzzy-feeling" kind of scene.
Well, yeah. I never had any problems with Wesley, though I think they carried the "kid saves whole ship" way too far. Maybe have him do it once.
Jake Sisko and Naomi Wildman were much better handled as child characters.
On the dam show.
I don't know why people hated on Wesley so much, because I always loved episodes where Wesley was a main character that had scene time.
I love how proud of him they all look, its heartwarming.
This scene always makes me cry 😢
Even his mom :D
He doesn't brag about it either. He stands there for a moment or two, letting it all sink in, then proceeds to his station silently after a brief nod. Definitely a favorite, impactful moment after how hard he's worked to get to wear the red and black suit.
"Did you shine those shoes with a candy bar, Ensign? Do push-ups 'til I get tired...engage!"
After the promotion. Wesley: "Can I call you Jean-Luc from now on"? LOL
Love Wesley's smile seeing him in his ensign uniform
I was just about Wesley's age when this happened. Felt like Picard was promoting *me*.
Yes. The producers of the show undoubtedly wanted to target the teen demographic. That's why Wesley got the amount of focus he did.
@@oddish4352 More of Gene Roddenberry living vicariously through the character. For fun look up Gene Roddenberry's middle name.
Campbell Cutler I learn so much about this show through youtube comments and reddit posts. 😂
@Darth Giggity Wesley Crusher, for all his faults and foibles, DID make significant contributions to both ship and crew during his service on the Enterprise.
This episode (though most episodes on Wesley also count) and STO are really good at connecting you directly into that universe. The writing even makes you feel like you helped and you made decisions and that without you it would have all failed. Even the uncomfortable ones where Wesley is at the academy and accidentally kills a peer are engaging.
After all of these years this still brings a smile to my face!
Not even 18.
And here he is, piloting a mighty *Galaxy Class starship.*
And not just any Galaxy.
The *Flagship* of the United Federation Of Planets.
Wesley is cooler than any of us could ever hope to be at his age!!!
That's the same as one of our teens sitting right seat for Air Force One. Or at the Helm of a Nimitz Class carrier.
My God.
In my country you can join the Reserves at 16 with Parental consent.
Once that is given you are looked at no different than a 16, 20 or 30 year old.
As long as you pass the required training and meet the standards, age is not a factor.
There may be a teenager at the helm of Nimitz right now.
Sure, and in the Kelvin universe, Cadet Kirk gets promoted to captain, (let's see, skips over five ranks to become captain of the Federation flagship) and heads out on a five year mission.
You do get the "fiction" part of science fiction?
not that piloting a galaxy class star ship is hard to do considering their current AI, but yeah, no need to get too picky, he did quite a bit of other things lol
You know this show isn't a documentary, right?
my husband and I got to meet will wheaton he is sooooo sweet took pictures with us talked with us was so cool
Tears still well up when I watch this scene so many years later.😢
0:27 I always loved Patrick Stewart's subtle acting skills.
He really picks these scenes apart.
Military officers promoted the classic way: showing what you can do on the field instead of just what you can study in academy.
Troi still comes to work as if it was casual Friday.
Jellico put an end to that
At the strip club
if she came to work in a teddy in high heels i don't think anyone would say anything.
Morgan Grey I would say thank you.
Gotta show some bod to the fans.
So awesome. This means even more coming from his captain.
This is what I learned in star trek. If you work hard on your dream job. It becomes real.
I’m the same age as Will Wheaton - hard to believe I was that young looking when this series was first broadcast!! 30 years has just flown past….
Wesley was bright like seven of nine and Wesley had a different captain. The whole crew watched him grow up. Janeway advanced members of her crew she noticed and liked. I didn’t noticed Harry Kim showing himself to advantage except at his post. He could show ability in other areas but he never gained enough to transfer to a different area like engineering or the Astro physics lab once they opened it. Harry was smart too but very modest.
Imagine discovery was as good as this and you can sit down with your family every week and watch a new episode.
Imagine people ridiculed TNG as much as they did Discovery, and Star Trek never made it past TNG S3....
Discovery is just pew pew pew and michael burnham
Ironically, this is considered one of the WORST TNG episodes. The fact that it's better than the majority of DSC really says something.
@@Blue84Stang People did ridicule TNG as much as they did DSC. And DS9 got it even more. The latter is generally regarded as pinnacle Trek nowadays.
Discovery IS good.
Those who hate on it for no good reason are not TRUE trek fans.
Everyone is beaming with pride. They all watched him grow up and played a part in hus raising.
I really like the last shot. Great Family Photo moment. Music is pretty good, too.
You don't often see Worf smile. I love it.
He’s just glad he won’t be called Mr. Woof again for another season.
I wonder what the cast thought when filming this scene, were they all proud to see Wil in the Starfleet uniform? Marina Sirtis seems to have a very genuine smile 😀
After his character's promotion on the show, Gene Roddenberry gave Wil Wheaton the second lieutenant bars he earned in the Army Air Corps (second lieutenant being equivalent to an ensign in the US Navy).
The cast all spent very long hours together and were very close. Gates McFadden has a podcast now and Will was on it, and they start off the episode calling each other "space-son" and "space-mom."
I feel that Troi could sense his pride and happiness and it only added to her own. She was an empath, remember.
Anakin would be like. “Why can’t I be a captain?!?”
That one scene.....Better than the entirely of Discovery.
Hm...No, no DISCO has moments that trump this.
@@jeremydale4548 April 1st was awhile back mate.
That look on his face when he walked out of Picard's office! "Finally, out of this wardrobe malfunction and into this slightly less wardrobe malfunction that at least everyone else is wearing!"
...How were any outfits in Starfleet a wardrobe malfunction?
@@jeremydale4548 You've never seen them adjusting their outfits on screen? Or the time Picard wore slippers instead of shoes/boots with his uniform?
That music! Gets me all the time. It almost emulates a movement from The Planets by Holst.
One of my most favorite episodes scenes
Harry Kim is losing his mind somewhere.
Looks like a kid in a candy shop. I wish I could be as happy as Ensign Crusher
So Wesley out ranked every cadet at Starfleet Academy.
Not necessarily, it’s a field promotion which would have been reversed when he went to the academy.
I may be wrong but thought I’d comment
@S P In the book, Harry Kim was given a field promotion to senior ensign when Voyager returned home but it was reversed to ensign 5 minutes later just because.
The best part of this episode was Picard racing the Enterprise around at Warp 8 the whole time in search of Lwaxana. However after securing her safe return and her making advances on him, he orders the Enterprise to Warp 9 which is normally for emergency situations only. 😂
Actually it was Warp 6
Amazing how easy and simple it is to maneuver that enormous ship!
Do you think Picard made him a red shirt hoping he’d be a casualty on an away mission? 😂🤓
That's what he meant by "all the commensurate responsibilities". If you make it back from an away mission as an ensign, you are immediately promoted to petty officer of the cannon fodder.
Ouch
LOL
I had hoped so.But girlie man survived.(DAM).oh well.👽👽👽.
But when that moment finally came, Picard ended up being the casualty and Wesley ended up saving his life.
Someone has actually mathematically proved you stand a good chance of surviving if you're in red.
I always liked how the Next Generation ship always engaged as it just went whoosh.
TNG is just simply Amazing. None of the other series after really ever hit that good in compairison
😊
Gene Roddenberry gave his real Ensign bars, Gene was in the Navy, to Wil Wheaton as a gift when this episode was made.
Man I wish they’d had him in Picard season 2 or 3
".....and shut up, Wesley"
That's Ensign Wesley!
I was so happy when I first watched this. It's a shame they messed up that character so much. I always wanted to go into space and explore and wanted to be Wesley Crusher. To be that young and have the chance to be a part of such a good crew of a starship that can go to so many places.
The good old days of television 😊
He looks damn good in a proper uniform.
People do not dislike him for what he did but rather what he was. Only so many occasions did he receive preferential treatment (allowed to visit bridge, become acting ensign etc). He was also unrealistically brilliant- why does he need to go to the academy when he can outsmart Geordi and even Data on a couple of occasions. Finally, now this is my opinion, when young people watch TNG, they want to see these heroic figures doing awesome things but when they see Wesley, they might relate to him and think, ‘Maybe I’m not one of the heroes but actually Wesley.’
I wish life was that easy
Wesley is the son that Picard never had.
Great final shot of the whole cast
such a proud moment. for all of us :)
And this time Dr. Crusher is on the Bridge to see this moment. Picard must have learned his lesson the last time he promoted Wesley without telling her.
this was one of the best moments from TNG
"I hereby promote you to full ensign"
*goofy smile, walks out without saying anything*
they really wrote Wesley like a clumsy golden retriever.
Data looks over and is like Dam I didn't even have that happen to me
Happy Mother's Day Dr. Crusher
Wesley was so excited he forgot to say, "Thanks, space-dad!"
I dont understand why people hate wesley so much
He's what's known as a Mary Sue; he has a tendency to be able to get out of almost any situation. I personally don't hate him as much as most people do, but I can see why he's not very popular.
+Amanda Grace He really was such a nauseating goodie two shoes. His every appearance made me cringe.
+Hammy Hog Just because people fail to live up to ideals so often, doesn't mean we shouldn't still strive toward them. I think his character was a truly noble and honorable one, and something/someone to be looked up to - not dismissed just to make one feel better about one's own failings.
+fyrestorme123 I like many star trek fans just could not stand the character. I like many fans was delighted when he was written out in the 4th season, so did we all dismiss him just to make us feel better about our failings?
Hammy Hog
perhaps
One of my favorites.
Ensign Crusher was such a Handsome Young Man.
even though Picard wasn't Wesley's father, he still acted as a father. I also notice some differences with this scene of Wesley coming in with the red shirt uniform as newly promoted ensign compared to Jack in ST: PICARD, where he's pacing about in his uniform trying so hard not to spoil the surprise of the refit of the USS Titan into the USS Enterprise G.
What a special moment with the boy
One of the proudest moments on the show.
All it takes is the good word from a being beyond time
I had a ***MASSIVE*** crush (no pun intended) on Wesley! He was only a few years older than me, and originally, I thought I just liked him like the older brother I always wanted but never had. But as the show progressed, I started having thoughts about him like "Wow! He has really great hair!", or "Jeeze, he looks kind of built under that uniform!" And it was the day I noticed what a "cute butt" he had that I realized what I was **really** thinking about Wesley!
The kid forgot to say "Thank you, sir!".
That was a cool moment on the show...
I liked it because it was goodbye to that dumb grey jumpsuit.
Of course when Picard said Ensign Crusher, that made sure everyone knew he was promoted to Full Ensign, incase anyone had any doubts.
Have to hand it to Ron Jones for giving us what is essentially Wesley's theme.
according to some of you, Chakotay was not promoted to Full Commander, he was actually a Provisional Lieutenant Commander. If you looked closely at his Pin, it was 2 Stripes with a Black Stripe indicating Lieutenant Commander in the Provisional ranks. Cavit was also a Lieutenant Commander, i see it as Ships with 100-300 Crew have Lieutenant Commanders as XO and smaller Ships can have Commanders and Lieutenant Commanders Commanding such as Defiant when Worf was technically Commanding at times. Voyager was a smaller Ship so the ranks were more Crewmen/Petty Officers than actual Officers. on such smaller vessels Ensigns can run a Department and Harry Kim screwed up alot too during the show so he was passed up due to that.
entire First Season has costume mistakes i head Cannonize as "something happened after end of Season 1 but before Season 2 that got Tom, Torres and Tuvok demoted" as they each had on pins indicating they were a rank higher than the rest of the seasons (Tom = Lieutenant but actually was Lieutenant Junior Grade, Torres = Full Lieutenant but actually was a Lieutenant Junior Grade, Tuvok = Lieutenant Commander but actually was a Lieutenant)
as for wesley, i rather he didnt go with the traveler and come back during generations as a Lieutenant Junior Grade on the helm, maybe he would have been the dramatic bridge death instead of kirk (change kirk story to him just retiring nicely in 2293) and wesley trying to help picard.
Wesley Reminds Me OF MYSELF AT THAT AGE IN JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL.
Cuz he's white?
It always amazed me, an organization as massive as the Federation & StarFleet, and they can only pick one "candidate" for the Academy (Coming Of Age) or that someone couldn't go there mid-semester (Ménage à Troi)
Classic scene !!!!!!
I love Wesley so much he really deserved that ❤
Wesley DESERVES that promotion!!! Ge' my favorite character EVER!!!!! I absolutely love him :) No "shut up Wesley"'s but more of "speak UP Wesley!" :)
“We can’t afford to send you to the academy, but we’re gonna give you a new shirt in the meantime.”
1:24 That smile says “You mean I can ditch this creepy craptastic uniform?! AWESOME!!!”
why is it creepy ?
@@lylenipshank2338 I just thought it be funny to say
Bravo Wesley!! I like you!
If Wesley was at genius level, he should have started Starfleet Academy when he was 10 years old and finished in half the time.
I don't know why people hated on Wesley so much, because I always loved episodes where Wesley was a main character that had scene time.
Weasly crusher my favorite character. Mind you I was a kid so I kind of idolized him.
I loved bit where he came in all proud to be in his red uniform
I love the kids smile!
Great scene!!!
thought I was watching little house on the prairie, for a moment, it's so twee.
Hey, Convoy1971: I unknowingly spent my last 11 days I the USMC as a Corporal (E-4) 'cause I was on _terminal leave_ at the time, exiting the Corps after 4 years if active duty. I feel your pain. . .
I don't understand the hate for Wesley either, I loved the character!
The episode that really made me hate Wesley was "Hollow Pursuits", when Wesley makes fun of Barclay. He really turned into a jerk in that episode.
He's Roddenberry's self-insert character. If you were a teenage boy wanting to be a space cadet yourself, you loved him. If not you loathed him.
The reason I don't like the character was because he was a little too perfect. And when I see him on the bridge all I can think of is all the other Conn officers. In their place I would be rather peeved that I was being passed over for a teenage kid.
Wesley crusher is the sweetest girl ever.. stfu haters :D
He's a boy XD
you know your in the future when star fleet uniforms have a “turtleneck option”
"just one more thing... shut up Wesley"
It's always seemed crazy to me that the literally freshest recruit on the ship always gets control of the ship and navigation.
Crazy.
Like....how do you not have one of the most seniored in charge of the helm at all times? Especially on the flag ship and again especially on a ship that goes to the craziest/hostile places with no room for hesitation.
And Deanna Troy sensed great happiness on the bridge. She was uncanny.
1:46 a great warm and fuzzy scene from TV history
