I like this scene between Picard and Wesley because Picard was always not being very nice to Wesley and would treat him badly. I don't understand why fans dislike Wesley. Is he really that bad as a character? The Next Generation novel, it was revealed Picard was actually in love with Beverly Crusher, but he was bitter when he learnt Beverly had married and had a son - Wesley. Maybe that could explain why Picard treats Wesley the way he does. "Shut up, Wesley!". Before you all tell me to shut up, I want to understand and trying to understand.

There's a trope about children in science fiction which causes draws the ire of some fans, too. Science fiction which indulges in children too much tend to focus on them as precious and overly gifted and elevate their value over others on the show. It was to the point that a notable science fiction TV show creator, J. Michael Straczynski, had the slogan "No Cute Kids, No Cute Robots. Ever!" on set. While the handling of children in science fiction has become much more nuanced over time, back then it was a trope, and not a welcome one.

Ok. I'm going to say something about this scene. This scene served no major artistic purpose. It didn't contribute anything to the story, what it did was reveal a little bit about Picard's character, as the show has done over the years in showing his less-than-disciplined past. Other then that, it was a pleasant discussion that let us catch up with Wesley.
And yet, I found myself more interested and engaged - watching a mentor and his protege enjoying some tea, listening to Picard reminisce about his youth - then any scene in Star Trek Discovery. This is what Star Trek is, not wall-to-wall action and drama.

    Picard did not hate Wesley.
He was in love with his Beverly but could never be with her because she was married to his best friend Jack.
Picard also always wanted children but chose a career in Starfleet over settling down.
His initial reaction to Wesley was out of not knowing how to deal with children, for a man so confident in his abilities, to find himself unsure if something would be hard to deal with.
He got so much better with kids as the series went on, even living an entire life as a family man and learning to play the flute :p

Just a little thing that doesn't make much sense here - why would Boothby not remember Picard? Obviously that's totally normal if Picard was just one of the many lower level Starfleet officers or something but Picard is one of the most highly decorated and famous starship captains in Starfleet.. Boothby would have seen his picture and articles about him and so on many times working at the Academy...

As early as season 2 Picard has intimated that he really regretted NOT having a family BUT at the same time he was lady crazy. If I had stayed in college another semester and studied two German classes (and I would have included Japanese), they would all have been electives, but they would have given me a minor in German along with my B. S. in Zoology. No small thing considering I was a member of the German Honor Society: Delta Phi Alpha.
I was taking the next Chemistry class after Organic -Physical Chemistry -and a classmate of mine boasted he would get a Chemistry degree and a Medical degree at the same time as a double major. I asked him how was he going to do that; full - time semesters are like full - time jobs and more. He said he'd do it.
I did poorly on a number of the tests, but I went to the professor and he was delighted to help me understand what I got wrong.
And then every test, the boasting guy came up to me and asked me to explain it to him. I, having little grasp of it myself, told him to ask the teacher, that he'd be glad to help. He didn't seem to like that answer. But still he boasted about his double major, up to the point when he dropped Physical Chemistry.
I struggled through math and science. And I succeeded. And these were my favorite classes. I asked for help; he didn't. I passed with a C. He dropped the class.
Just because someone takes a course doesn't mean he'll pass it, even English 101.
