Def Leppard has more hits than I can count! Literally one of the deepest catalogs of hits of all time! They have several entire albums that have no bad songs !! Rabbit hole worthy!
Especially the first 4 albums, part of the 5th album and most of Retroactive, with a sprinkle of great songs thereafter
I was in 8th grade when this came out. Couldn't wait till class was over so I could listen to Def Leppard. Def Leppard was played on every station 4-5 times an hour. They had more than one song in rotation so you could literally spin the dial and hear it anytime you wanted.
8th grade for me, too. Our art teacher had us design album covers for bands for one assignment. She thought she'd be cool and name off a few musical acts for us as suggestions, like "Jeff Leopard. . . ." 🐆🎸🎶 Remember that guy? 😉🙂
Wow all of a sudden it's the 80s and I'm a kid hurrying from school to sit down and watch MTV all night long. Man I miss those days so much 🤔
Me too it was absolutely the best decade of music for me anyway we had some of the best music you could by a now album and love every single track on the album and now you can look at a now album and not like one single track on it and you can listen to the radio all day long and maybe hear 3/4 songs that you like and I guarantee that the 3/4 songs that you like are from the 80,s
The drummer is AMAZING! He lost his arm in an accident and COMPLETELY redesigned his from kit to enable him to play with 1 hand.

Was literally the greatest and most popular album of the early 80's. Impossible to describe how big Def Leppard was. I was born in 72, so this was literally my life when I was 11. The concerts sold out stadiums, 75,000+ people for years. Pyromania was top 5 is albums in the entire decade.
Def Leppard is a massive rabbit hole worth going down. “Pour Some Sugar On Me”, “Let’s Get Rocked”, “Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad”, “Rocket”, “Two Step Behind”, “Miss You In A Heartbeat”, “Hysteria”, “Promises”, “When Love And Hate Collide”, “Bringing On The Heartbreak”, “Rock Of Ages”, and there’s so many more

The song is about Marilyn Monroe. It’s basically saying she is an unrealistic fantasy and out of touch in real life. All he has is a photograph. The video plays with that idea, and adds the mystery element as to how she died so young. It could also be seen as a murder mystery movie and she’s the star. This was a huge hit in 83 in the early days of MTV.
i think you are making it a little simple, but i think its more any person realistic or not but all you have is a picture, nothing you can touch, and you want more.
She isn't the only person I think of when I think of the unrealistic fantasy part of it. If this was written in the 90s, it could easily have been about Cindy Crawford or Claudia Schiffer, minus the untimely death/foul play aspect. And if it was written in the present day, it could easily be about Kate Upton...again, minus the untimely death aspect of the song. I'm sure they could have come up with something great had they been faced with the challenge of writing that song in the present day. It's timeless. That's one reason why I think it still holds up today.
The song is about Marilyn Monroe but it's about deadly obsession too. Many people even up to now, don't believe she overdosed and that there's some kind of cover-up. Idk for sure or really care, she's before my time, but that's the stuff I've heard down the years.
Joe Elliot is on record saying it wasn’t written about Marilyn, it’s just that the video put that idea in people’s mind, to the extent that the band presents it as a song about her in live shows, even though it isn’t really. It’s about crushing on an unspecified celebrity.
He actually sang "look what you done to this Rock 'n Roll clown". She made him long for her. He only has a photograph but he really wants her. Side note is Rick Allen the drummer has both arms in this video. After this lp he got in a car accident and lost his left arm. Through the miracle and technology he helped invent a set of drums that he could play snare drum with his left foot, being probably the first drummer, certainly the first professional drummer to do so. His band stuck by him as true brothers would. Love your reactions. 👍
Rick Allen is amazing. There are drummers in other bands who's careers would have been over if they lost an arm.
yeah he played electric drums..completely changed the sound imo...but the band was awesome.
@@jeremybilbrey1133 don't know if I'd say it completely changed their sound because they were always guitari oriented with layers upon layers of guitar riffs not just lead and Rhythm you'd have two sets of scales going to Leeds going and then layering that layering that in different octaves and Rhythm very intricate .
That being said you could tell they were electronic drums half of his kit after the accident .
However the sound was an altered that drastically in Factory in the 80s a lot of bands took the plane electronic drums and again they were always guitar oriented the drums were in the back on that before going to begin with
When I was 15. We didnt have cable.... I heard about this new channel called MTV. Saw the commercials. I want my MTV. Had to have my appendix out... in the hospital. Watched this video for the first time. Def Leppard became my all time favorite band. From that moment on.... 32 years ago

I was lucky my dad always had to have the best tv, so I grew up with cable as soon as came to town in 1978, I saw MTV from day one.
Shilo since you might not be too familiar with Def Leppard the Drummer ended up losing one of his arms in a car crash. He still is their drummer.

Rick Allen never played on Pyromania or Hysteria. All drum machines.

Gen X story: MTV used to have something called Friday Night Fights in which 2 videos played and fans called in to vote for the best one. Photograph was in the first fight (forgot against which band) and won ... then won the next 5 weeks before getting beat in Week 7. This is an all-time song and one of the iconic early MTV videos.
I forgot about Friday Night Fights!!! I think it was.... Def Leppard VS. Quiet Riot, and yes... Def Leppard won! I only remember cuz I voted for Def Leppard (a few times)! Good times....

I had the same reaction back in the 80's. No video games, internet or cell phones. We sat around at night playing cards and games and listening to awesome music.

The band is from England and the spelling of their name is a nod to Led Zeppelin.
In an interview with Joe Elliott he talked about how he came up with the name. In art class when he was a kid he asked to draw a poster for a rock show instead of a fruit bowl /still life. He had an awesome art teacher that said go for it. He actually spelled Deaf Leopard but changed it when he got older. Great interview. He's such a cool, laid back guy.

I just love how your smile keeps getting bigger as you get in to the song. Let's just say, I was way younger when this song came out as I was working at a record store back in the early 80's. Only the lonely by the Motels should also be reacted to. I think the song is about a fantasy love for Marilyn. Candle in the Wind by Elton John (also done with Melbourne Symphony) is a beautiful homage to Marilyn, with the POV of a person looking back and wishing he had known her

It has to be said that very few bands bring excitement to their songs like Def Leppard could. BTW, if you're in the mood for an awesome power ballad, you should check out their song 'Love Bites'. Another song of their with a more mellow, dreamy vibe is 'Hysteria'. You won't regret it!

Def Leppard has created a lot of amazing music over the years. They probably peaked with the Hysteria album. The Pyromania album was my personal favourite though.
Welcome to the wonderful Rock world of my all time favourite and, in my opinion the best ever British, Hard Rock band Def Leppard.Most people like yourself maybe only really think of Def Leppard from their fourth album Hysteria onwards ie Pour Some Sugar On Me, Animal,Hysteria etc but this great song is from their third album Pyromania from the EARLY EIGHTIES FOR FLIPS SAKE and you as a new generation lady is loving it nearly 40 years later That's how good this band is.Like Hysteria there isn't a bag song on Pyromia.Ive seen them twice in Belfast over here across the pond in Northern Ireland and once in Dublin,Republic Of Ireland when they were supported by my favourite AOR band Journey. What a night that was.🎸🎹🥁

Hey, I saw them with Tesla in '87 up in Portland, Maine, I was 17 at the time. They killed it and Tesla was pretty good too! Seems like yesterday and then, out of nowhere, I'm 50!?!? Turns out.... time actually does fly!! Peace...

Mutt Lange is the producer. 1981, 2 years before this, he produced 4 for Foreigner. Mutt + Foreigner hired Thomas Dolby to play keyboards.
In 1983, Mutt brought TD to do the same thing for Pyromania including this song.
Both 4 + Pyromania have attributes of a Mutt Lange production: vocal harmonies, tight basslines, drum sound.

The song is about being in love with, or at least having a huge crush on, someone you can't have. Since the singer always liked Marylin Monroe, they used her in the video to express the idea of loving someone you can't have.

IMO, Def Leppard had the best harmony as a band. They are neck and neck for me with Zepplin, as my favorite bands, excluding Enigma. Great reaction and your hair looks very nice.

When they arrived in America and started touring and released their music, noone in the USA believed or knew they were English , they just assumed they were American because of the style of music and the way Joe sings 😂

Hey Shiloh...one of your videos showed up in my 'recommendation' list and I decided to watch. It may have been this one for Photograph. Two hours later I think I had watched about 20 of your videos. I really appreciate how you are adventurous to check out some of the classics from the 50's-the 80's. The song is about being an adolescent boy (they were barely out of their teens at the time) bombarded with images of The Hot Woman of the hour and coming to grips with the fact that no matter what feelings this might inspire you dont get to act on them just because you really want to, and you have to deal with that.

"Pour Some Sugar On Me" is another one of their popular songs, you might want to add that to your list. I always liked Def Leppard. I find a lot of music videos to be a distraction from the song unless it is concert footage.

This album, "Pyromania", had 5 or 6 hits on it. Thier next album "Hysteria", thier manager wanted to have even more. After touring during 1983 & 1984 for the album the band took a break before starting to record the next one. While on vacation the drummer Rick Allen was in a terrible car accident in his Corvette. The car rolled over and tore off his left arm, when he was found by the ambulance crew he didn't know what happened. They found the arm and it was reattached but failed to heal properly so they amputated it. While in the hospital recovering the band decided they wouldn't start recording without him. During that time Rick figured out a way to play one handed and use his left foot to do what his arm should've been doing. He had a special drum kit made and as they say the rest is history. It took over three years for "Hysteria" to come out and it charted 7 or 8 hits. My daughter saw them back in '05 or '06 with Foreigner and Cheap Trick, she sent me a text during the show "Dude the drummer only has one arm, I want to have one arm!"
My understanding is that it was a faulty (or defective) seatbelt that took his arm off.. 🤘🤘🤘

I suggested them when I first started watching your reactions several months ago and glad to see you like them. I've seen them in concert 3 times. They have many great songs but one of my favorites is off their 1st commercially available album in the USA, High and Dry called Bringin' On The Heartbreak from 1981. Technically had a 3 song EP in 1979 and an album in 1980 before I heard of them in the UK.
