- Texas Songster Mance Lipscomb (1895-1976) plays and sings his rendition of this blues standard written and introduced by Bessie Smith in 1927 and subsequently performed by countless others. While some live recordings of Mance's take on it have surfaced online, this recording-which originated from Mance's first field recording sessions with Chris Strachwitz and Mack McCormick at his home in Navasota, Texas, on August 13, 1960-was published only on Arhoolie's 1961 anthology 'Blues 'n Trouble' (Arhoolie F1006) and appears to be one of Mance's few Arhoolie recordings never reissued in digital format.

The guitar playing is deceptively simple. Only these great old blues men have that style, that something, call it nuance, that is unique, and utterly American, and expressive of a culture going back to the 19th century and beyond.
Blues authentique du vrai
As a brazilian, i can tell you we have almost the same origin with Samba. I mean, Mento in Jamaica, Bolero in Cuba.
Unique and utterly brought by africans and mixed with indigenous and european music. Imagine music today without west african influence.
The guitar playing is amazingly simple. All these great young blues men, have this style, that something special, call it sauce, that is everywhere, and udderly with a cow, expressive of a culture that goes back thousands of years.

Thank-you for sharing. It is very good sound quality!
Nice post, thanks! A recent discovery for me, had seen his name, but had never heard Mance until recently.
Love this music. So down to earth !
Blues minha alma agradece👏👏👏🇺🇸.
This guy is so good that it's ridiculous. I believe three were hundreds of great black players in the heyday of country blues .....the 1920s and early '30s. Only a relatively small% were recorded.
I Fully agree with but would go further and says a good few thousands

@@jamesbradshaw3389I'm still around but I've never been discovered.🎸🙈🙉🙊
@richardmindemann6935 not only that, back in the the day a lot of music was recorded on steel records, a lot of it got melted down in the war effort.
And that's a fact. Researching music there is commonly associated to white folks in all Americas you easily discover that none really are. Even tango in Argentina come from black slaves.
C'mon, come to a point that we can say mainstream music exist because Africa. Otherwise we get Polka, Waltz and Fado.
Thanks for posting!
