"Please, Dear" & "The Moment I Found You" by Buster Dees (1949)
Theron Moore "Buster" Dees (1909-2000) was born and raised in Midlothian, Texas, but he began his career as a singer when he moved with his family to Los Angeles, California, in the late 1920s. There, he sang with a number of big West Coast dance orchestras, including those of Henry Halstead (himself a Texan), Gus Arnheim, and Jackie Taylor. He also apparently had a small role in a short film titled 'The Doll Shop' with a young Ann Dvorak. By 1935, he had returned to Texas, where he worked as an insurance agent in Houston before returning to music. In the late 1940s, he recorded several sides for Bill Quinn's Gold Star label, singing much in the same romantic crooning style popular back i...

"Back to Santa Fe" & "Lee's Boogie" by Lee Hunter (1948)
Просмотров 915 месяцев назад
Like his more famous brother Ivory Joe, Lee Hunter (probably 1907-1972) was a highly regarded blues pianist, though unlike Ivory, he stayed home in Texas and produced only one record. Active in the Beaumont area, Lee Hunter recorded these two sides for Bill Quinn's Gold Star label in 1948, released early in the next year. The A-side, "Back to Santa Fe", is a slow blues number, and has been reis...
"Angel Child" by Mance Lipscomb (1964)
Просмотров 3447 месяцев назад
Two years following Mance Lipscomb's 1976 death, Arhoolie Records released the Texas Songster's final album, "You'll Never Find Another Man Like Mance", consisting of songs and monologues recorded in live performance at the Cabale in Berkeley, California, between the 26th and 28th of November, 1964. Most tracks on the album were later reissued on "Texas Songster Vol. 4: Live! at the Cabale". Ho...
"Benzedrine Blues" and "Mr. Man in the Moon" by The Texas Rhythm Boys (1948)
Просмотров 644Год назад
These two archetypal Texas honky-tonk performances comprise what is ostensibly the first record released on the "Royalty" label, a product of renegade record man Jimmy Mercer's Paris, Texas-based Swing Record Company. The Texas Rhythm Boys who provided us with this music are almost completely unknown and unidentified, save for vocalist and songwriter Alvin Edwards, who nonetheless remains a bio...
"You're So Near Me" & "Mortgaged Love" by B. Williams, His Guitar and Trio (c.1950)
Просмотров 634Год назад
Recorded in Houston, Texas, around 1950 and ostensibly the only release on the "Top Tunes" label, these two T-Bone Walker-style blues sides are about as obscure as you could get from a commercially issued record. In fact, I can find virtually no information about this record, other than references to its existence. Aurally, the enigmatic "B. Williams" bears an uncanny resemblance, to my ears, t...
"You Don't Mean Me No Good" by Mance Lipscomb (1964)
Просмотров 4 тыс.Год назад
Another one from the inestimable Mance Lipscomb (1895-1976) that has never been reissued in digital format, "You Don't Mean Me No Good" appeared only on the 1968 compilation 'Texas Blues Volume 2" (Arhoolie F 1017). Per Stefan Wirz's discography, it was recorded in Berkeley, California, on May 2, 1964, though Mance cut an unissued recording of the same song in his first session in 1960. Compare...
"Back Water Blues" by Mance Lipscomb (1960)
Просмотров 82 тыс.Год назад
Texas Songster Mance Lipscomb (1895-1976) plays and sings his rendition of this blues standard written and introduced by Bessie Smith in 1927 and subsequently performed by countless others. While some live recordings of Mance's take on it have surfaced online, this recording-which originated from Mance's first field recording sessions with Chris Strachwitz and Mack McCormick at his home in Nava...
"Bandera Waltz" & "That's the Only Way" by The Texas Top Hands (1949)
Просмотров 227Год назад
Here is the original recording of the Texas country classic "Bandera Waltz", a 1951 hit for Slim Whitman, and also recorded by such greats as Ernest Tubb and Adolph Hofner. On the San Antonio-based Everstate Records, number E-101, the song's composer O.B. "Easy" Adams sings the waltz, backed up by the venerable Texas Top Hands. On the B-side, accordionist Walter Kleypas sings John Currie's "Tha...
Tex Allen and his Electric Harmonica (full album, 1981)

Allen Ben Fischer (1926-2001)-known professionally as Tex Allen-of Grey Forest, Texas, worked by trade in the aeronautical field, but, as his brief discography will attest, his passions lay in good old Texas music. He was well-regarded by musical peers in South Texas for his skills on the harmonica, and demonstrated his skill on the instrument at venues such as Floore's Country Store. Ostensibl...
"Searching for You, Buddy" & "The Red Deck of Cards" by Red River Dave (1953)
Просмотров 122Год назад
Although these two numbers by San Antonio's beloved Red River Dave McEnery are among his better known titles, his versions released on the Decca label are more commonly known. While both records appear to have the same version of "Searching for You, Buddy", the original Tanner 'n' Texas record contains a different take of "The Red Deck of Cards'" than the Decca, and was recorded, presumably, a ...
"The Ballad of the Alamo" & "By the Silvery Rio Grande" by Red River Dave (c.1960)
Просмотров 160Год назад
This 45 by Texas' great Red River Dave-published on his own "Copyright" label around 1960-seems to have never made it onto the internet. On the A-side, Red River Dave sings his own tribute to the Alamo defenders of 1836, "The Ballad of the Alamo", which was recorded, according to the label, "in the Alamo shrine of Texas liberty, San Antonio, Texas," and is a different take than the one reissued...

On one of fewer than a dozen records released by Fred M. "You Better Change Your Ways Woman!" & "Christmas Blues" by "Cool Papa" Smith and Orchestra (1949)

These two slow blues numbers credited to one "Cool Papa" Smith comprise one of apparently only two known discs published on the "Uptown" label-an offshoot of Fred M. "Cool Papa" was evidently a pseudonym for boogie woogie piano player and singer Albert Lavada Durst (1913-1995)-also noted as the first black disk jockey in Texas-who also appear...

It was written by Christopher Smith and John Larkins and published in 1907. Bob Roberts made a cylinder recording of it the following year, which can be found on RUclips, and Clarice Vance recorded a version for Victor the same year that was not issued. I'm not aware of any other recordings, though that doesn't mean none exist.
