    Welcome to 'wheel world' of studio space. I built mine this way 3 years ago and added ceiling suspended bars which has made a massive difference to light stands, cables and other tripping errors. i find it much more productive and the ability to swap out cheap chinese printed backdrops a great way to give the same space a different look.

  • @mtmccornack

    They sold the building that my studio was in. Two months later, I moved to another city, and now all I have is a small workspace in my new laundry room! OMG, It looks like an epic stack of tuperwate bins from floor to ceiling. My stack of tripods alone is ridiculous, even with the rolling flight case they live in!

    Totally impressive studio setup! If you want speakers that are high enough rich sound quality but don't break the bank, I use Logitech Z207 multimedia speakers for less than $100 from Amazon. Other creators have also recommended these. Or if you prefer your headphones go with that. I like your Savage colored paper for creating product images, so far I only use white, I may have to get blue and pink now after seeing this. The 53 inch rolls work with a C stand, however I like your 3 roll setup on the wall which is convenient. I like your workbench on wheels which can store lots of equipment.

    The one thing about your space compared to almost ever other studio is how bright it is. As far as lack of Sound treatment have you thought about the rolling dual sound blanets that Caleb Pike designed? Just a thought.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  27 дней назад

      I've thought about the sound blankets because they would help A LOT, but I honestly just don't want to have them take up space. I've noticed more reverb since moving things around, so I think I'll definitely need to tweak the sound treatment a bit more.

  • @AndreSjoberg
    @AndreSjoberg 27 дней назад +1

    Oh, one thing regarding turning on and off the power to those tubelights:
    I recently bought a set of four individual wifi-controllable power outlet sockets/smart sockets, and put them on my keylight and in a couple of other places, and since they are supported via google, alexa and siri I can now turn on and off single power outlets/single items , cutting the power to them - so even if I have a powerpad with multiple outlets in it, I can then put these single outlet controllers in there, and control the power for each single socket, by voice or action buttons on my phone.
    It’s also possible to group several sockets so they can be controlled by a single command as well as individually, just using the phone with either voice commands or ios shortcut buttons.
    That could maybe solve the problem of turning on and off the tube light in the corner ++ effectively cutting the power to the tubelight if that’s what you want.
    Yes, it’s an addition step for *just* turning on a single light (if it’s off at the socket), but at the same time, by grouping these sockets it’s possible to turn off everything you *want* to not have power all the time with just one button/one voice command, saving on battery health.
    I think they are just called «smart sockets» or «smart plugs» on Amazon, I only just got then so I’m still figuring out how to best utilize them -but since one of my next videos is gonna be a proper «youtube studio light setup figuring s**t out for me and the background/set» type video I’m deep diving into *really* figuring out how to utilize them properly :)

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  27 дней назад +1

      I really like the idea for grouping everything together! The tough part with the tube lights thought is that since they have batteries, once they're on they stay on until the battery dies, and they'd have to be left on for the remote to have an effect. There's zero reason for Nanlite to include a "bypass battery" option, but dang, I'd sure like it! 😁

    • @AndreSjoberg
      @AndreSjoberg 27 дней назад

      @@tombuck … but … with the wifi smart plug you can then turn them off with the remote first (which I guess is standby mode?), and then turn off wifi plug to cut wired power to the lights so the battery doesn’t charge unless you want it to - that way it won’t constantly charge, which is what kills the battery over time … or am I missing some additional button on the tube lights?

    Really nice and well thought out setup! I know it took me awhile to get my setup and after watching this I see I have several efficiency improvements I can make! I do have the two angles I can setup pretty easily, which is nice. A hand crank standing desk would be awesome, currently using an L-shaped desk now - which works, but no standing feature.
    And now I have to look at rolling toolboxes! I actually have a spot in my recording office where I could swap out the table that is there now and put in a toolbox and suddenly have way more storage, but still a clean look.

  • @jonathanramsey
    @jonathanramsey 27 дней назад

    I did a thing. I sold my RCP2, last week. I’ve been using an Allen & Heath CQ12t. Is a pound heavier, and the XLR jacks input and output are all on top instead of on the back -making me have to unplug and re-plug when I scrub and set up. But! It has a smaller footprint, and I don’t have to have an outboard rig for occasional duo and group shows. Plus, it has auto gain control and intelligent feedback control. I have designed a 10-button MIDI foot controller for my lights and video, so I can change things during songs, in lieu of the RCP2 smart pads.

    Having that standalone, dedicated «filming»-desk/surface area is sooo key for a well functioning space - I do something similar in my filming space, although I have a big workbench on wheels with shelves and storage in the middle of the room for filming, it does do double duty for projects/crafting my RUclips-gear as well, *and* for mounting Roller Skates, so it does trippel duty and sometimes those things crash - but I then *always* have my separate working desk available for putting my laptop on and do some computer work, which is also where I have my audio card and monitor speakers set up.
    I often end up sitting at my workbench with my laptop though, just because it feels nice and all my stuff is within easy reach - so not perfect, but *way* better than having just *one* desk :)
    And of course: everything on wheels is a must :D

    Another very inspirational video Tom. While I’m just limited to a space at the end on our dining room that’s open to most of the house you did give me some ideas I can use. Moving my camera/teleprompter setup to a stand with wheels similar to what you have is a possible start. I’ve already looked into making that change after watching that video. I’m already planning on buying one of those Husky adjustable height work tables. I’ve seen those on several different channels. I even have my wife’s approval for the expenditure. It will be a great improvement over the desk I’m currently using. Unfortunately my space doesn’t have space a second desk/table setup like you’ve moved to but I could add a lot of different angles for my shots just by making those changes.
    Thanks again for your channel and all your efforts to help those of us who are trying to create videos.

    LOVE that everything is on wheels and modular. For your camera/mic setup on your work desk, I've been using the Viozon 6-in-1 desk stand that clamps to my desk. It currently supports my A7IV with a teleprompter, a small mic that I boom overhead, an Aputure MC that I use for a little fill light and a lightweight15" monitor that I use as a multiview so I can see myself or my overhead when filming. It's nice because you can push everything out of the way when I'm just working (95% of desk time). The included mic boom arm is one of the trash $15 ones you can get, so I replaced it. Just gotta find one that fits in the same hole on the mount.
