    Good to see this. My brother was a CH-53 crew chief in the Nam. My son is now an USMC Captain and pilot of an MV-22B. Life is a circle.

    One of these pulled us out of our FOB during a tactical withdrawal at nite and there was absolutely nothing tactical about it 😂 it's like an apartment block landing outside, but it got every one and everything on board in one go, such a great machine

    I remember leaving Camp Leatherneck on one of these things...sat down, port side, very last seat by the ramp. Reached for the seatbelt...
    Nothing.
    I remember thinking to myself as I stare out the open ramp, "well...hope we don't hit any rough air!" lol

      Yeah, they have tethers and you dont want to be the guy dangling from one out the back. You’ll never live it down. So hang on at all times. Says a former 47 SpecOps crew chief I know.

      @@HQBergeron Yea, that's called the gunner's belt...usually the crew chief or whoever is manning the gun in the back is wearing that. (Hence the name.) Got to do that in an Osprey on a training mission aboard 29 Palms...got to hang my head out the back, looking under the bird for UXO...it was friggin epic.
      In AFG though?...as a passenger?...you're SOL.

    My old Stallion the H-53E... HMH-464 MCAS New River. Bless it be to God that we didn't have cameras filming back in the late 80's! I would probably still be in prison-LOL

    Flew on 53’s at night in Fallon, NV. going to an F-14 crash site. We had to clean up the debris and remains back Jan. 1993. VF-1 Wolfpack 1989-1993 USN RIP LT. Jones, LT. Waldinger

    I was stationed at MCAS Tustin from 1993 to 1990. Many hours in an Echo. Magnificent machine. I received training on the M-2 and M-19. I would respond but I can’t hear very well anymore.

      1. If it ain't leakin', don't go flyin'.

    I’m always amazed at how we came to lift something that massive and heavy off the ground.
    Like, I thought the chinook was large, but this?
    Omg the tail alone is as tall as my house, and it can carry as much people as a c-130.

    My first time on one was over the Pacific I asked the crewman are the hydraulic lines supposed to leak he said its when they stop leaking you gotta worry.

    Okay! It's time for some CH53E trivia!
    What is the device called that is located in the cabin overhead just beneath the MAIN gearbox and aids in folding the blades giving the aircraft proper positioning of the main rotor to do such a function?
    '53 maintainers should know this! OOH RAH!

    Hey Fellow Crews, Can anyone in the MC tell me why the Corps seems to always fly with Gear Down... I mean your's retract right, like the NAV's Birds?... So is there a reason why they don't fly with retraced gear?

      IchTrommle lots of problems with the retraction and extending system resulting in mishaps I crew 53s currently and they are way past their expected life time SOP currently is always gear down just less problems and maintenance

      @@JohnDoe-ct8ig I was aircrew on 53E's back in 1984 with HMH-464 and we would retract our landing gear when not lifting any external loads. The 53E's were brand new back then, sorry to hear they are having so many problems that you just don't retract your gear anymore.

      I was told it was mission specific. Situation dictates. Keep it simple stupid.
      The more use they get in desert environments can cause failures due to "moon dust" sand. Unless you really need the little extra speed then they stay down so they simply cannot fail.
      Besides what else would the Afghans hold onto?

      No, it's a bit bigger, maybe not in rotor diameter because the chinook has two main rotors but it's still got some size on it

      Remember the 46 and 47 are similar just the marines used the smaller one and the blades fold up as do the stallion's . The army uses the 47 as their heavy and its still in service and the blades stay put cuz they dont pile into a boat. Marines like to be compact and moveable. Course the marines took the impossible osprey and re tooled it to their liking . Just like marines tackle one impossible task to the next.

      It's 17 year and two drink take on the 6173. lol 6173 is the actual MOS for a CH53E crew chief/plane captain. The Marines loaded into the back were, more than likely 0311s.

    Great Bird. Makes us Proud to be AMERICAN. my Uncle Coley Leon Andrews was killed on 12/19/66 Crew Chief on HUEY. 173rd ARB. & 1 of the Casper Aviation Platoon. Second tour he had Volonterd for Both. & My Brother worked on Chinooks. & My Nephew is a E7 in Coast Guard. He has his 3rd or Master's Degree in Aeronautical Engineering. He is a Flight Engineer on both the Falcon Jet. & The HH-65 Daulphin Hello... he is on his Twilight Tour. Now. So this Video is Something I am Proud to see.. these are the Guys who Come to get you if you are a Downed Pilot or what ever the case may be. They are ready to give their lives to Save Others. Can't be more Proud. For that is what our Uncle Leon was doing when he was killed.

      The designation is XM-218, the aircraft version of the M2 fifty caliber machine gun. It is the same receiver with an air cooled barrel. It is basically the same gun used on all American fighter and bomber aircraft during WW2. The XM-218 designation means it is an experimental version from1918. The gun was so good the experimental designation number was never removed. Anyone who went through aviation gunnery school would know this. From a former USMC CH-46E crew chief.

      After the older Sikorsky H-53 models which were designated "Stallion" as in Work Horse. The CH-53E has an extra engine over the CH-53D and can lift 1/3 more, hence the "Super"
