- Two United States Marine Corps CH-53E Super Stallion helicopters of squadron HMH-461 “Ironhorse” make a stop at Tri-Cities Airport for hot refueling of their aircraft. The pair taxi out together and take off simultaneously to the West. Also includes American Eagle Embraer ERJ-145 takeoff.

My first squadron flying D model 53's in the early 70's. The raw power and majesty of the Stallion/Hawg/Schitter is incredible.
The sound of the CH-53’s sitting there is so calming to me. I could listen to it all day.

Very impressive. I was attached to an A-6 intruder squadron back in the '70's. That was fun. Served aboard the JFK CV-67 and we broke in brand new the IKE, Dwight D Eisenhower CVN-69. So love military anything that flies. Thanks for sharing this. Memories last forever

I could listen to these behemoths turning on the tarmac all day. Nothing else sounds like the Super Stallion / King Stallion. Love flying in them while deployed with the 24th MEU.

The CH-53 series unfortunately holds the award for most accidents for a US military rotor aircraft.

The company I used to work for serviced the MH-53s. Whenever you were aboard one, you had to watch where you stepped. It was either oil or hydraulic fluid all over the place.
I was assigned to HMH-461 back in the mid 70's. We had the 53D models

I was lucky enough to work in the Prod Flight Hangar at Sikorsky AC back in the late 80s early 90s and I got to maintain and fly as a crew member in not only CH 53 Es but also MH and SM 80-1s [Japan] man that was a real happy period In my life and something i never took for granted, as we had the best of the best on those programs.

When I was at Vincennes U. Aviation, the Government wanted our 53 Super Stallion back so they traded for a Boeing 737 ! I’ll bet that this is where it went! This thing is a beast! This thing has air to air refueling capability from a C-130!
Those are some cool helicopters!
My mother and other family members worked at the plant in Stratford Ct where these beautiful birds are made.

I was at El Toro when I believe it was HMH 461 that made the non stop flight back to new river from California. Refueled in flight several times. The CO said something like it was always claimed to be possible so they did it. I believe it was 6 aircraft

Cobra Gold 1988 was static man on recovery team, red patcher with 15th MEU, when a 53 lifted a F-18 at Utipa, the parachute was held to the very end and released which kept it from spinning.
I flew from New River to Philly in a shitter aka 53. Middle of winter . We were sliding the whole time
Rode one after it wrecked in front of my stick at night . Wonderful flight.

Does anyone remember the problem with AFCS of the CH53E around 1985 that some Marine called morning sickness? On damp mornings a few of the Super Stallions would get SAS caution lights. If you turned on the heaters and waited about 15 minutes the problem would clear.

Mark, It's mostly just luck of the draw. Military helicopters rarely show up on ASDB. So I just rely on listening to the Air Traffic Control feed at the airport. Plus I'm lucky to work in the flight path for TRI, so sometimes it's as simple as they fly over and I see them. Thanks for the question. Cheers!
Aircrew conduct cross country missions to a; get their flight hours for the month, b; practice Nav and occasionally shuttle parts around. I am talking late 70's Intruders.

I live in California and I’ve seen those helicopters flyover my house. Question, is the landing gear on those retractable or fixed? ( I’ve seen them down a lot when they flyover).
The CH-53 Super Stallions do have retractable landing gear. However, it appears that they typically fly with the gear extended. Speculation has it that they don't want to deal with any gear retraction issues. So they just leave them in the extended position. The extended gear do not affect the flight operations, so no issues with them being down.
I do know that they keep the CH-53 helicopters running during refueling stops in order to not have any break down issues or to have to re-inspect the aircraft prior to flight.

Both the East and West coasts have Heavy Lift Helicopter squadrons! Here at MCAS New River, NC is HMH-461 (Ironhorse), HMH-464 (Condors) , HMHT-302 (Phoenix) and the sadly recently sundowned HMH-366 (Hammerheads)!

The two turbines attached on either side of the two main turbines up top? Are they also feeding into the gear drive for the rotors or what is their function? They look like designers added them on as an afterthought
The CH-53E has three main engines! There are two on either side and one just above and slightly aft of the left side engine. The things hanging off the front of each of these engines are EAPS, which are essentially to help filter intake air among other functions, I think you may be referring to those. And you're correct, they're kind of an afterthought. The CH-53E models were designed with them, but they're essentially a modification to the D models, I believe. The intake cowling underneath the EAPS looks almost identical to the A model engine intakes!

Couple of reasons I have heard via Air Traffic Control. Airport traffic is busy and ATC does not want the helicopter to overfly any other aircraft or personnel on the ground (ramp hands, grass mowers, etc). Another is that the helicopter crew want to take off into the wind and the runway is the easiest path to take. Hope this helps explain things. Cheers!

US should develop a 10,000 shp turboshaft engine. Therefore only two engine required instead of the complicated 3 engine layout.
I'm betting the designers of (and the crews flying) the CH-53 series of helicopters like having that third engine available for redundancy when one of the engines fail. Regardless of how complicated the arrangement is. And since speed, agility and looks take a back seat to the Stallions main function - Lifting heavy stuff - It's sorta surprising they didn't slap a fourth engine on the other side just to beef it up some more. @@AEROWEPHILE Why need 3 or 4 when two is already good enough. Look at Mil Mi26 only 2 engines. Btw I came across a RUclips Comment where this man work as a mechanic for merlin helicopter of 3 engines. He told us the complexity of repair and they found it easy to maintain the S92 if having two engines. Beside now airplanes are switching from 3 or 4 engines for a 2 engine air liner.
With nowadys technology turbo engines are very reliable and hardly break down.

I don't believe there are many (If any) CH-53 in civilian use. They are essentially used in a Military capacity. But a quick Google search found this info on costs: Stratford-based Sikorsky Aircraft has been awarded a U.S. Navy contract of $878.7 million to build nine heavy-lift helicopters. Tennessee is centrally located in the Eastern US. So a stop here for fuel and they can pretty much fly directly over to the coast in one hop where the MCAS helicopter bases are located. Cheers!

I just realized these units, have what appears to be 4 engines... If that is correct, having qty of 4, what is the least amount that one of these heli's can use as a last ditch effort to safely land to save the occupants and the heli itself? or how many can it use for continuous service? Beings the Military demands redundancy for safety. really neat to learn this today.
It has 3 engines and an Auxiliary Power Plant.

I did look into this and did learn that there is 3 power plants.. but does not explain any of how they work together. Thank you either way. really clever machine.
@@drubradley8821 The #1 and #3 engine drive a gearbox that feeds into the Main Gearbox. The #2 engine powers the Main Gearbox directly, 2 engines is usually the minimum it can fly with, but you always fly with three engines in Training environments. What you thought was the 4th engine is just a giant oil cooler for the main Gearbox and the #2 engine. The Auxiliary power plant is used during startup and shut down to provide electrical and hydraulic power when the main rotor isn't spinning.

@@charleshetrick3152 I've not heard that specific problem with them. So I can't confirm it. But I was told they suffer from "Shut Down Break Down". Which explains why I've never seen them shut down when they make a stopover at TRI. Cheers!
