1300 hours in 53's both CH and MH with HC-4 out Sigonella, Sicily back in the day. Flying dump trucks. When they quit leaking hydraulic fluid you knew the reservoir was empty. Maintenance nightmare for sure, but man what a rush. Army boys take note. This is a grown ass man helo. Choppers are for kitchens.

That was our everyday sound back in school of infantry. You’d be sleeping in the field and hearing those machines flying over. They become the daily norm, just choppers up there....

Now you know why engine mechanics and helicopter crew chiefs have hearing loss. Apply for your 10% disability as soon as you get out.
BUT if you want more have your hearing tested just before getting out. You had a bass line done on your first physical. Get copies of all tests and it will be easier later. You don’t even realize how bad your hearing is until later. This is a fact!!
I wish someone had told me this before I got out. I have an appointment with the VA doctor for hearing loss tomorrow
That's why we were issued headsets in the Air Force on the HH-3E flight line. Glad I wore mine!

I always felt safe in a CH -53 back in the 70-74 timeframe but always felt uncomfortable in a CH-46. The CH-46 shook so much I felt it was going to fall apart ( none ever did ).
Back in '67 we called the Sea Knight "twist and turn, crash and burn". They got a lot better with the D and Super D models.
53E Crewchief in early 90's - happy to say I never had to fly in the eggbeaters!

Didn't know the CH-53E is Diesel-driven. Sounds like it at the beginning, when the choppers are approaching😉.

CH-46- 44 feet(fuselage length) and 15,000 pounds empty
Ch-47- 50 feet and 24,500 pounds empty
