Our justice system requires that a person has a right to legal counsel for a defense. If you accept the job, you do your best to help the defendant or else. I don't know how someone could be strong enough to to do such a job, but our legal system couldn't function without it.

@@genkatqltr737 I agree. The defense lawyer is there to ensure the accused understands the process and is able to present their defense. The main purpose is justice by enabling the court to hear both sides and ascertain the truth. Especially in criminal justice it should never be about winning or losing, it should always be about truth, justice and fair trial. If we deny people the right to defense counsel because we assume their guilt before their fair trial we would undermine the whole concept of a fair trial.
I would have no difficulty in acting as defense counsel for anyone accused, whether they are innocent or guilty. The job is ensuring the trial is fair, that all evidence is heard, and making sure the verdict can not be questioned due to failures of due process.

Finn here. 12 years is not automatic release, it's the minimum they have to serve, if they get sentenced life in prison. At that point they can get in front of the judge and possibly be paroled. If they are deemed not fit to be let go they will stay in prison. Right now there is a prisoner serving life who will most likely never be released. The dude is a literal serial killer, who has killed more every time he's been released. Latest sentence was life and it's very unlikely he will ever get back out because he has proved that he will just keep on killing people.

In the UK what you call Life Without Parole we call 'A Whole Life Order' but they are rarely given out. A double child killer who's motivation was sexual still only got 40 years. That said, the chances of parole for such a criminal are very remote and he'll almost certainly never get out. There are still people in prison here many years after they have completed their minimum terms. There are currentley only something like 200 prisoners serving whole life orders in the UK that range from crimes of killing multiple police officers to serial killers. But in real terms many more who aren't on the list will never get out.

She's incredibly lucky he survived being shot or she'd have been convicted of murder. She and her Mom apparently believed that a plea agreement meant she didn't go to prison which is why they freaked out like that. Lawyers are required to defend the accused regardless of whether they like them, believe they should go to prison or are getting paid. Due process I believe it is called... without it nobody would go to prison as all the sentences will be invalid.

I had to deal with an out of control swearing aggressive child who was destructive and clearly has issues, and remaining the adult in that situation was hard but even if the child you have to look after is a literal demon - you have to remind yourself that you are dealing with a child, an unfinished person that is fragile emotionally and physically and you are the one with the real power in this situation not them. Take a deep breath, pass them over to their actual parent and get out of there. If you can’t control your reaction to their actions, you shouldn’t agree to babysit.

Sentencing someone for life for the crime of murder is actually more heavy. The murderer gets to stay in jail just waiting for the time to die.

An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind. Death row is almost an achievement for most prisoners.
They get treated pretty well on death row till their execution date.
If you get sentenced for life, it’s worse because you have to be in jail for decades

@@emrig exactly. Just sitting in jail waiting for your life to expire. I'm not sure but in the US is it true that they guve an execution date? While in Japan they don't tell when.

I think a life sentence is able to be negotiated/lowered over time. If the judge wants to for sure keep anyone in prison for the remainder of their life, they could just sentence them to something like 100 years or so
