In the japan exclusive sequel Pipo Saru 2001 all the monkeys have been imprisoned in time warps made by the professor and spike is pulling double duty as a prison guard and sanitation officer. Equipped with a powerful vacuum cleaner he chases down every monkey and forcefully removes their pants to clean them in a big washing machine. If the monkeys try to reclaim their pants, Spike can use his vacuum cleaner to attack and stun them. This game was promoted in McDonald's Happy Meals with a modified demo version of the game that included McD food items. Specter is there as well and attempts to impede Spike's abuse of his fellow monkeys, but is always defeated. The professor's rationale for this whole scenario seems mostly a cruel victory lap.
Hes also forcibly stripping them both of their acquired dignity, as well as the very stratums of their shortlived interpersonal identifiers. You literally scrub them of their identity
Wish I saw this 6 years ago. This is incredible. Now I'm wondering why there hasn't been an indie spiritual sequel with this kind of tongue-in-cheek philosophy and humour.
Glad to see people finally analyzing the rich lore of the Ape Escape series. While I don't think the other games ever did a take on class consciousness again, some of the spinoffs have some darker lore dealing with poaching, including tragic backstories and character death. The Professor remains a kind of closet villain throughout the entire series, and Katie/Natalie works behind the scenes to correct a lot of his mistakes resulting from his negligent genius, including ruining the lives of his coworkers and providing backdoor access to hackers allowing them to disrupt global infrastructure. The anime also retcons Specter's origin slightly to give him a friendship with Katie/Natalie. Also the fact that The Professor modeled his personal robot servant after a teenage girl is kind of sus.
We dont even get into Jake? The human boy from the same societal class as Spike, but who Specter is able to reach with his powerful rhetoric (Peak Point) and sway to his side, who uses his societal power to aid the apes in their quest for social self actualization? Who then you, the alledged best friend of Jake, upon seeing the way he has defied the social restrictions and regulations applied to their class, immediately decry as evil and beat (in races) to submission and realignment with their social caste, a tragic tale of peer pressure and caste violence perpetuated to keep EVERYONE down?
"Your technology made for war destroys theirs made for liberation" christ, gave me goosebumps. Gg man, I always thought this game had something deeper to it and I'm glad to not be the only one who thought so
I laughed, I cried. Sometimes both at the same time. Very well done video. I've been reliving my childhood by replaying this game in my off time, and now I'll never unsee that I'm actually the true villain of the game.
I've always shyed away from political talks, mainly because I didn't understood them. But this video somehow got me to understand some of it. And, damn... if that wasn't the most interesting video I've watched today.
jacob geller mentioned this on his swordstream the other day and it is wonderful. thank you for reframing a beloved piece of my childhood into a brutalist, yet befitting viewpoint that absolutely COULD NOT be have been an accident. beautiful stuff
Aww memories... in 1999 with the original ape escape, my older brother who was 13 years old rented the game from blockbuster and got an ape escape sticker that he put ontop of his PS1 Disc lid. One winter afternoon my older brother was playing ape escape in our parents dark bedroom and he had to go do something so he left the game on. I remember being 4 years old walking into my parents dark bedroom and looking at one of the games tutorial levels.
I actually named my DA account after Specter when I first got introduced to fan art, and then this video makes the story of the original Ape Escape more pop-out and deeper, and darker, WELL DAMN, I GUESS WE ARE THE BAD GUYS INDEED, AND I FINALLY KNOW WHY I LOVED SPECTER MORE THAN THE MAIN CAST LOL
Well here I am, it's 2023 and I didn't think I would be so invested in this kind of take on Ape Escape. But I was! I don't think I'll be able to look at Ape Escape the same way again haha
This video is sort of inaccurate - i looked up the final cutscene wnd it seems that Spectre isn’t fighting purely for liberation and equality but has ambitions to establish a society where apes are dominant and control humqns through the state. I think this makes the conflict significantly more morally grey than you give it credit for being
This is the best dang video
second best behind who's afraid of modern art
Hey Jacob, maybe this notification reminds you of something you wish to remember. Darn love your videos
Ever
@@id.1706aww thats nice
It the man hinself 🫸😮🫷
Could the very name "Specter" be a reference to the "specter of communism" that Karl Marx talked about?
SPECTER DID NOTHING WRONG
On god
I'd just like to comment that the video thumbnail is a thing of beauty.
I dont know why the algorithm decided to show me this now but im so thankful for it
This video has aged incredibly well it seems. I wish that more people would see this. Very great job!
Can’t tell the ratio in this of shitpost to earnest analysis which makes this even better.

THATS FXUCKING HILARIOUS
If I was a smart monkey I would ultimately be appreciative if someone tried to clean my pants for me.

Holy shit, someone who not only remembers Ape Escape, but uses the PAL version names for the cast! (And all within a thoughtful video essay, too.)
I can't express into words how much i love everything about this

I love Ape Escape representation. This take on the narrative is hilarious. And also, I need that thumbnail on a shirt. Asap
i thought this was mostly a joke at first until i realized it's totally accurate
Liked and subbed. Some genuine laughs in there, top notch.
high effort shitpost

masterpiece video. thank you for mentioning monkey football/monkey soccer at the end, it deserves the recognition.
Brilliant video, never looked at the story with this much scrutiny, but it totally adds up! Poor monkeys.
I am the monke

More games teaching class consciousness!!
Have u seen the new 3D Platformer Bolt Bot Screwy Viruses?
Anyone remember the MGS3/Ape Escape crossover?
Holy shiz! I remember you from my Kongregate forums years!
"Jake" is the English version of the UK name "Buzz".
It's a good watch. Your voice is a pleasure to listen to (even if said voice is casually mixing sinister game themes and socialism together).
I really wanted to get into today but I just can’t get around using the d-pad to control the camera
This is brilliant!
Mikey Wilson you should watch my other one, it's even better! :D
This is fabulous!
At the beginning of the video, why did you show a picture of a Dreamcast when you were talking about PlayStation?
Masterpiece
this is good

I love you
Haha funni monkey game
That was so good! Ahaha!
This game seems incredibly fucked up. Jfc..
