My name is Bre. I took two years of small engine repair at the local college. When I left school, I fell into a wonderful job at a local small engine shop where I worked the counter for a couple years. In 2010 my husband and I opened up our own small engine shop in central Arkansas where I am able to work alongside my family and best friends. We see over 2,000 pieces of small engine equipment every year, and answer 1,000's of small engine questions. I agree, says the guy still mowing with a 1987 John Deere 212. I will say, I'd like to see the 1987 boat head down the road because that got replaced.

Yeah - I bought a Murray 20" , rear bagger (didnt run) ( bought a used troy built bag for $20 ) for $ 50 at Salvation Army in 2007 still tunnin strong - bought a 1999 Murray 12 hp 30" rider from a neighbor in 2007( didnt run ) for $75 then bought exact model ( runs ) for $75 from a newer nabor in 2020 for spare parts - bought a 1992 Troy Built Chipper Vac , Tecumseh Engine , 4 forward , reverse, nuetral and park tranny at flea market for $200, looked new but neglected , its a workhorse - have to keep it tip top for one pull start because it's a bitch to pull start and I'm gettin old.. love this shit !
I like working on older stuff so as it doesn't go to the landfill. Worked on my push mower because it quit. Took the tank and carb off to clean. Found one of mounting bolts was loose. Cleaned them up and reinstalled. Starts and runs like a champ. My brother has one he bought back in the early '70s. Still runs. Keeping them clean and serviced they'll last a long time.

I am a mechanical engineer based in the UK trained by the Army and we ran old equipment but the secret is. Inspect regularly and Keep Well maintained. Making broken equipment run agin is always a win and I think your ethos and videos are fantastic. Well done
Hello Chickanic. I bought a power mower from a major retailer last week - won't say who, but it's the place where you see a lot of orange vests. The darned thing won't run. So I decided to break out the old fashioned push mower from my shed. I consider pushing that thing around the homestead my favorite form of exercise. Nothing like recycling what I thought was trash from my shed into treasure. Keep up the good work and thank you for sharing all the great tips.

Great work there Bre. It is comforting to hear someone else following the same patterns to check a free mower out, and then to get it running again. I've been doing this almost exactly the same way for a while now. Good money as long as the problem isn't too severe. Love the videos.
My experience has been a mower with out the blade will pull back on you. The blade acts to give the engine enough inertia to spin. I found this out when I put a aluminum flywheel briggs on a out board. I ended up using a 5.5 honda off of a pressure washer which has a cast iron flyweel. It now starts easy.
Your 💯 correct the blade act's as part of the flywheel and they will kill you trying to start them with out a blade . 👌👌

I wish I would have seen this video 4 months ago, I might have been able to save my Husqvarna mower from the junkyard! I never thought about the flywheel sheer pin. This fairly mechanically inclined old fart really enjoys you sharing your knowledge!
My neighbor is in the pre owned mower business. He does pretty good for himself. He cruises yard sales, looks at sale sites and sometimes people just give him mowers. If he runs into a problem he'll call me for advice. Now, if I could just sell the two trimmers and self propelled Scott's mower...Nice work Bre.
Some tips from 40 years ago when I worked on these as a kid. We didn't have console games or smartphones back then so we actually did things.
During grass cutting season in LA (lower alabama) I had to work on B&S mowers every day after school as a pre-teen in the early 80s. The male half of the old couple I lived with on my grandaddy's farm did this as a side gig. There was an abandoned mower graveyard just across the street a ways, maybe 50 mowers. So as my side gig I started bringing them over to rebuild them (down to honing the cylinder and lapping valves if needed) and managed to get lots of them working to sell. By far, most were just carb jobs replacing the diaphragm or flywheel key. I didn't just get them running, but total refurb. Definitely pull the head and lower cover and clean the valves. By the time I was 14 I was able to buy my first motorcycle. I noticed today's mowers need much much less maintainence and repair.
Back in the day there was a ratcheting cup with ball bearings with 2 ears. We'd bang those with a 6" bar of lead and hammer. and used the same bar of lead to hammer the top of the crank to pop it off...we never pried a flywheel off as it can warp the crank. 12:20
For setting the coil clearance we used a strip of old paper grocery bag, I suppose a piece of 1000 grit sandpaper would work since they don't make those big brown grocery bags anymore.

Put the nut back on the crank shaft. Take a screwdriver under flywheel put a little pressure on it take a hammer and smack the end of the crank shaft. Flywheel will pop right off. I have never broke one yet.
I have done that several times. Works well and quick.
I work construction, but collect power equipment throughout the year. When construction is slow in the winter, I spend time in my workshop getting things running. I usually have a dozen or more mowers sitting in my front yard for sale. I find it relaxing and it helps keep the lights on .

it's pretty clear to see the mulch cover got pinned back against the muffler, and that's what burned the hole in it.
YEs, I wired them up intentionally before to blow the clippings out the side on wet grass. Chuckle!
The pointers on the flywheel were useful. I have never seen it pulled before.

I picked up a used push mower for $80. A Husqvarna! It's a beast! I needed it for a vacation property. Best $80 I've ever spent.
A free-to-me walk behind John Deere was my first actual foray into small engines after I bought my house. It had sat for a few years, and the previous owner couldn't get it to start from just yanking on the pull cord, so it was offered to me since I didn't have a mower yet. That was the best thing that could have happened, I think. It was an easy fix and a quick learning experience. I had to replace both cables running up the handle, and since I didn't know squat about a carburetor, I ordered a new one -- they were like $20 for a replacement, and my time replacing it. I Added some fresh fuel, followed the instructions on the handle, and she started right up. It hasn't given me any problems since.

I think one of the first parts orders I made when I got set up with the different parts suppliers I ordered a bag of Briggs flywheel keys and a Briggs starter clutch remover tool. I used to fix so many Briggs engines when I was a young kid replacing those flywheel keys.
I bought 10 of them yesterday
I never had much problem with the Briggs, Tecumseh were the ones I had lots of problems with the flywheel keys. Mostly they would shear because the flywheel bolt wasn't Torqued enough

I love your videos. I have a good mechanical background but I small engines are fairly new to me and I've learned so much from you. I maintain a small fleet at a golf course and the education has been invaluable.
I've pulled100s of mowers out of the trash, fixed and sold them. It's a descent side hustle.
Neat! I had an uncle who use to bring home old mowers from auctions and I use to work on them and get many of them working again. A couple were kept for the yard, one was given to me, as I took that as payment for some odd jobs, and the rest were often sold at his garage sales and I would get a percentage. Just fun times working on them, and often finding out that most just suffered from being exposed to the elements and needed lawnmower 101 to get running again.

I always enjoy your videos I've learned much from you! My photography business tanked from the pandemic so in order to make rent I started repairing and flipping lawn machines in my neighborhood. Now my wife allows me to stay here, LOL. Thanks again for your hard work and sharing your knowledge.
I was thinking about doing a small side hassle when I retire. Lawnmower, snowblower, trimmer tune up seems like a causal laid back job.
Totally get this is a repair channel, not a cleaning channel. And a fantastic one too! Just wanted to give you the viewers' perspective; we *_love_* to see a 'transformed' machine, and kinda assume (wrongly) that when the repair's done and the video ends, that's what the customer's gonna get. I guess we've been spoiled by so many RUclips tool restoration channels! Just a quickie shot of the 'after' would go a long way to helping with this, as I for one long to see just how well a machine cleans up.

I garbage picked that exact type mower that(according to date of manufacture) was only 4 MO OLD! Wouldn't run and had no air cleaner. Changed plug, checked compression, put a little gas in and it started right up. Didn't want to buy an air cleaner before I knew it ran because they cost around $20. I got halfway thru my lawn when it died and wouldn't start again. After much trying I figured I had flooded it and it wouldn't start until I dried off the spark plug. Pulled it out and found a piece of grass clipping had got sucked thru the carb with no air cleaner and created a dead short across the plug. Cleaned it off and after that it started right up. Bought an air cleaner immediately and have been using that mower for the last 4 years.

I am a bit older than you, those were $100 mowers in my memory. The clean one probably has a bent crankshaft. Nice flywheel removal. I use the pry on both sides with wife hitting the crankshaft on a piece of wood with a 4 lb. sledge hammer. Not pretty. But works.

All my lawnmowers came from the trash when one breaks I take parts off it then find another in the trash and use it till it breaks you save a lot of money by finding them in the trash
we love free stuff ....we also have a few scrappers that bring us stuff at the shop...selling free stuff makes me warm n fuzzy inside ... ur a supa star girl !!!!! great show ~!!!

My favorite old manual push mower with high wheels (bicycle spokes). I wish that I could get one of those.
Need to have the blade mounted to the crankshaft. The weight of the blade helps to finish the stroke.
Physical harm can occur. It is also possible to shear the key.
I have experienced near shoulder dislocation due to no blade on a walk behind.
that throw start kind of makes me cringe, too. I've found over the years, that pulling faster just stresses things more. - and one online mechanic pointed out that with some newer models of recoil, throw starting can blow out the starter.
@@kenbrown2808 Don't get me wrong, I was not criticizing her by no means. She is great at what she does. I have been doing this for over 30 years. She keeps it simple and explains things very well.
I was only advising from experience. Her channel is the best I have found thus far.
@@delseckora5327 I occasionally watch a couple others. and yes, she explains things well, she just has a couple habits that I look at as things she might want to think about. the throw starting of push mowers is one. hitting wrenches with her hand to break a stiff connector loose is another. I actually need to get out of the habit of throw starting my saw. fortunately, there is no throw starting with my mower. it's too heavy to throw.

I pick trash and freebies for old mowers, blowers, etc. Most of the time they just need something simple and when they don't it's education for me. I make decent pocket money just doing this from time to time.
This is from my "Power Mechanics" high school class of the 1960s in which we got our hands dirty working on the Briggs & Stratton L-head engines of that era.
Back then, of course, you didn't have lawn mower blade adapters that would fracture in some manner if you hit a hard object while you were mowing, so the engine's flywheel key was your #1 line of defense against engine crankshaft damage in this situation -- and Briggs & Stratton's service instructions were that if you did find your engine's flywheel key even partially sheared or damaged, you should replace it with only a genuine Briggs & Strattion replacement key (which was made of soft metal), and never a regular steel key.
Years later, I was mowing a lawn with a neighbor's lawn mower when I hit a steel stake that had been hidden in the tall grass I was mowing, which caused the mower's engine to stop and not start again. However, remembering what I had been taught in that "Power Mechanics" class from my high school years, my purchase of one flywheel puller for her mower's engine and one genuine Briggs & Stratton replacement flywheel key for it got her mower running again!

I've gotten 3 or 4 mowers in the last 16 or 17 years for free and all of them I got running and one of them I'm still using and it's over 20 years old and the rest I sold for a good price. The one that I'm using is a toro super recycler with a 6.5 hp Briggs.

MUST have a blade on it to start, that's the flywheel.
More often than not you can start it without knife, but it needs a VERY had yank, or it will kick back, yes.

I had one of those Murry Mowers given to me when the neighbor moved. He said it didn't start, after he left it in his back yard for a year. The gas was green! I took the carb apart cleaned it out put fresh gas in it and it ran. It was surging and quit after I ran it for a little while. After watching another video I took the carb back apart and cleaned the main jet out with my torch cleaning tool. That cured the problem. There was a bunch of hard brown deposit in the jet.
I keep finding jems in the dumpster. 3 Stihl MS230, one cleaned the carb and ran like new, one needed carb rebuild and fuel lines replaced, third just a new bar and chain.
Echo gas string trimmer, carb rebuild and fuel lines.
Several cheap push mowers same as above and only one smoker with a bad knock, so parts. Kept the saws and one running push mower (plus the parts one) sold the rest. Easy$$$ and enjoying getting them running.
My pressure washer is an old pressure washer chasis with a harbor freight 212cc predator and a 3,300 psi triplex pump. It's actually a beast. Built it for under 400 bucks
When I was in the service, our dept bought a new snowblower. When I got back to the shop, the boss was trying to get it started. I asked if it had gas, and he never checked. He filled it up and went to start it, when I stopped him again with, did you check the oil? It was shipped dry. He was a good boss, but a lousy mechanic.
My dad would go to the local scrap yard and buy 25-30 mowers for the scrap price. He would make 15-20 working mowers out of them then retrun what was left and buy another 25-30. It's what he did in retirement.
Whatever happened to Tecumseh engines?
@@cabman86 Tecumseh closed its engine division in 2008 due to financial issues they still make compressors for refrigerator and air conditioning units. Peerless was sold to Husqvarna. Then Husqvarna sold Peerless sold to certified parts group.

YES! A woman backyard mechanic giving advise to people to run their engines dead if a fuel shutoff valve installed. I do the same with my Tecumseh powered snowblowers because rotten fuel is always the culprit of them hard starting, and not running correctly.
A little tip for fitting the new key (on the B&S engines) once the old one is removed, is lay the flywheel back on the crank and then just push the new key in from the top. Then bolt it down. 👍

When resurrecting or repowering an old lawn mower I’m a big fan of Briggs & Stratton I/C engines. (industrial/ commercial) engines.

Unfortunately they are becoming a rare bird.
Old school Tecumsesh engines are my second choice, vintage 1970 ‘s.
When I worked for a dealer, I would have worked 7 days a week instead of 6, if she would have been at the shop ! You are better looking than a new tool box and we all love your personality !!!
Started right up and no puff of smoke. Worth 125.00 for sure. I remember they sold for 99.00 at k-mart. the engines were 125.00. separately. I would buy the mower and swap the engine. They all had the same bolt pattern.

I bought a new walk behind self propelled last year, went to small engine place for fuel line for an outboard I’m restoring. Glanced at mowers, the one I bought was 120.00 more!!!! I did something right for a change buying last year👍
The scratches/scraping marks can also be caused by the engine brake.

Most of the time, if you try to start these cheap push mowers without a blade, it WILL shear that flywheel key immediately! The blade acts as a part of the flywheel system since the flywheels are made out of aluminum and not heavy enough on their own. I have seen MANY of these do just that. I am sure that you know that, but a lot of your viewers may not.

Good vid for newbies when putting flywheel back on you have to have it clean where attaches to crank or you can shear key trying to start it key is only for timing
Actually, kind of a bad flywheel installation. Torque specs are important for any flywheel installation, either automotive or small engine. The flywheel key in a small engine is meant to shear if the engine is very suddenly stopped in order to keep it from breaking the crankshaft. The torque spec allows that to happen. Tightening with a impact is not the way to go, too loose and you shear keys all the time, too tight the crankshaft breaks.

@Daniel Dominguez The engine needs the blade on it, the added weight helps the flywheel. It's starts much easier then.
A note on the flywheel puller. An old steering wheel puller works much better. They're hard to find anymore. Mine will pull that flywheel off with no problem. You just have to find the right bolts. 🐀🐾
Hey Chickanic I just found your channel a couple of weeks ago and I have been watching a bunch of your videos you do a heck of a good job with that equipment, there is one thing that I do not understand, you said that someone made a remark about the way you put your makeup on and my first thought was that you have got to be a very busy woman and therefore you look great, keep up the good work on everything.
I’ll be keeping my Quantum engine Craftsman that I bought new in 2005. I always have used NE fuel and run it dry at the end of the season . Hand on the Bible, I have never been in the carb or engine before. The control cable has been replaced but that’s it. It doesn’t even burn oil.

LOL, I flip mowers every day and when buying\finding them I always look for red mowers, a good looking red mower will sell in 2 days where a gray\black\green one may take a week or 2 to flip.
i been lawn mowing for 14 yr's + one thing i did notice NEVER tilt or lift a lawn mower by the handle's on that angle it will do more DMG etc

I just bought a PB-9010H. I would not have purchased Echo except for you. Toss up between the Stihl Kombi and Echo version. The local guy had no Echo mowers and the Xmark is over $1,400. Wow.
