    The Authorization mechanic gets easier to swallow if you mute the dialogue and instead imagine that Samus is doing a low% run to piss Adam off.

      That would've been hilarious as a plot device.

      if you compare both games. there on one point away on meta critic, both share the same score on Ign amd other reviews. the only defining difference(besides the user score) is if Samus was Sylux this game would have been Herald as a classic. both games plots was terrible but for some reason people have a harder time accepting that with metriod games. even the plot of those games have always been weak.

      The problem with the Other M plot is that the game focuses on it almost completely over the gameplay, unlike other Metroid games. Meanwhile Rising doesn't take itself seriously and is mostly about the gameplay

      MGR was okay because it was a spin-off and MGS had already super-jumped the shark by that point thanks to 4 and PW so that getting a good action game out of the MGS series' desecration was about the best thing that anyone could've asked for.

      People LIKE DmC though, even if every goddamn time Donte opened his mouth it felt like part of my soul was departing, out of sheer embarrassment that we were supposed to, y'know, basically give a shit about him.
      I actually wouldn't have minded the one they showed in like their first trailer. Psychologically challenged demon hunter who closes himself off from any society and fights mostly out of revenge? Edgy hero trope is overdone but I'll take it. But what did we get instead? A disastrous bastard of a character who will crack a dumb joke in one scene that makes you want to commit seppeku, then he goes emo for a split second, then goes back to his stupid trash talking that doesn't even deserve his own name.

      Not sure how much the claim that people like DmC holds true. It's sales figures were very underwhelming (making only just over half of what DMC4 made), there's still strong hate among the fanbase and those combined are why the franchise is in the position it's in now. Like yeah, there will always be people that like something but it has to be a minority with DmC, just like it is with Other M.

    As a side note, I feel like the "objective markers" in prime 1 and 2 were actually handled really well. The game doesn't hand you them right away, it waits a very long time, but they do eventually show up if the player takes too long to get anywhere. Its a great way to give a helping hand when/if a player is confused. On the same token, its a suggestion. The entire rest of the game doesn't shut down when one happens, Samus' computer is just like "hey, weird anomaly here, should probably check it out." Granted, I remember being a little annoyed a couple times it would spam when I was investigating something else, but it was so minor as to just open and close the map that it wasn't a huge issue.

    Samus as an avatar of the player also runs similar as to how Master Chief from Halo was an avatar for the player. Both are always in suits of armor and both are almost always silent so as to allow the player to characterize both of them however they want. Then Halo 4 and Other M came along and characterized them differently than just being silent player avatars. But while Chief's characterization in Halo 4 made sense to followers of the Halo franchise and actually made Chief more dynamic and tragic, Other M just confuses people who played Metroid for decades.

      It's not like there wasn't a foundation, while vague the monologues in Fusion gave you a good picture of what kind of person Samus is, her actions in the games, and her body language in Prime combined give you a building block to make something good.
      Not for Sakamoto tho, Samus has to be a weak, tiny waifu. Contradicting everything established when there is already so little is an accomplishment.

    • @seantaylor2683
      @seantaylor2683 8 лет назад +2

      But the Master Chief has had a voice since the first Halo, he didn't talk that much but he talked enough to establish at least a part of his personality.I love both series but the Master Chief established his character as more independent from the player from the beginning while Samus has been mostly silent for most Metroid games. I think it was much less surprising when MC's story got expanded

    • @SanvelloSerapiega
      @SanvelloSerapiega 8 лет назад +1

      Except A) Samus has had lines of dialogue and official characterization since super Metroid
      b) other m contradicts those characterizations
      c) Nintendo deliberately pushed the image people got out of her pre other m in all pre other m characterizations. Seriously just read the Nintendo power thing for Samus if not skipping Fusion or the manga they made where she punches people in the face for acting like Adam or just plain out ignores them

    • @SanvelloSerapiega
      @SanvelloSerapiega 8 лет назад +4

      HolyknightVader999 except
      a) different appearances aren't the same thing as a consistently pushed image of how a character interacts with the world around them. The (I was referring to the players image of her personality)image people liked about Samus was one that Nintendo themselves and the games pushed as her character since before Super Metroid. It has been her established character for over 20 years and that has been mostly consistent even if it was shallow similar to master chief. It would be like if chief forgot how to soilder and was an incompetent pascifistic idiot for no reason is basically what they did in other m. For examples of how Samus is OOC she was consistently portrayed as lets just say "awful" with orders that she would disagree with. Not only is this just told to you in fusion, the plot ends with her becoming a galactic criminal by ignoring them. Then there is the canon manga where she does stuff like ignore orders about the resolution of a hostage situation or that she became a bounty hunter so she could have more liberty in her actions and so she could ignore security protocols. People complain about that stuff is because that is stuff she wouldn't have done.
      b) wearing different clothes or armor isn't retconning their personality. Heck changing the color of clothes in one game doesn't even neccesarily change her appearance of her clothes in the other games. She might of just decided to wear a different undersuit under her armor. Neither is retconning how armor or appearance is displayed according to the games art style like from halo 3 to 4. Its simply them changing almost entirely cosmetic gaming aspects to fit the games cosmetics best. Especially considering her actual physical appearance effects like zero elements of say the atmosphere(its not like say height or size a tool used for imagery to denote power which actually is an entirely fine thing to complain about because that actually means something which was also fairly consistent in the games but got retconned here) or setting or the actual game and has like zero bearing on the plot.
      C) This argument that changing appearances no longer applies like at all to metroid after Zero Mission since they finally had made themselves a well established template for her appearance at that point anyway and didn't have to worry about technical limitations or other problems caused by multiple creators working on a ridiculously unimportant aspect no really would care about especially considering world building consistency only really became important to series at the introduction of Super Metroid.
      D) People wanted the same Samus to be given more depth in Other M. Not for there to be a completely different Samus for no reason as people already liked what they wrote even if it was shallow in the EXACT same respects to the character of Master Chief
      E) Her hair was brown in Metroid. Red in Metroid 2. Every other appearance was blonde or noncanon. Her green hair was just a gameplay aspect that occurred when she acquired the varia suit because they wanted a visual cue for it. Similar to how link in a link to the past is actually not pink haired but was an error they just decided to not bother changing and left it in despite the fact he actually has like blonde or brownish blonde hair. And Metroid Original got rewritten anyway to be better connected to the rest of the series so she has had a different hair color once in a game that actually matters and it still is unimportant.
      F) Complaining about a hair color change for someones hair wed see for like a couple minutes at most isn't major at all. Heck it is more minor than retconning in a friend in. No one complains about the fact she is friends with Anthony or say Rundas or Gandraya or Adam or Ghor even though they all got retconned in on games to promote development of her character in some fashion. At worst they complain because they complain because the new friend is shallow and unimpactful(pretty much Everyone but Adam and Rundas) or they are acting OoC from their characterizations and thus don't get why Samus likes that person(see people complain about the perfect military mind of Adam)
      G) Retcons have a place as a tool to promote the creation of ideas and to create story oppritunities that needs to be used sparingly and correctly the problem is Other M doesn't use them correctly.

    I honestly think the only reason Other M has better review scores than Federation Force is because when it came out, there was just so much denial about how bad Other M actually was. Meanwhile, Fed Force has come out at a time when all of the denial and just general negative feelings for the series has been festering for six years.
    I personally like Fed Force. It was made at the worst possible time that it could have been(and the DMCA against AM2R certainly didn't help it either), but I like it. I've wanted a game where you play as the Federation for a long time. I like that it's steering Metroid back towards the Prime series, and if interviews with Tanabe are anything to go by, He considers Other M to be not cannon at best, or a "gaiden" title at worst.

      Hate to break it to ya but judging by the rumors, they're not working on Metroid Prime 4.
      According to Emily Rogers, Nintendo accepted their pitch. If Retro Studios were working on Metroid Prime 4, they wouldn't even need to pitch it. Nintendo knows these guys already make stellar Metroid games.
      Retro Studios typically takes a year off in between development. So we'll see what they're working on in 2018 at the earliest.
      Hopefully, it's an original IP. They can do whatever they want though. They've certainly earned it.

      It's important to keep in mind though that even if Retro Studios is actually working on Prime 4 right now, that doesn't necessarily mean that it's the same Retro Studios who made the Prime trilogy. The vast majority of Retro's staff left in mass exodus after Prime 3. A lot of them went to Armature if I'm not mistaken, who were partially behind the game Recore that came out recently. So in other words the team that made the Prime trilogy is almost completely different from the team that made the newer DKC games and such. Not saying they aren't still good, mind you, but you just can't expect them to make a new Prime just like the ones we know and love, especially if they don't have the same artists and level designers and such. Fingers crossed though!

    I think the thing that REALLY rubs salt in the wound of "No backtracking allowed" is that the one time that you CAN backtrack in Other M (after you get the ice beam in the desert area)...the room permanently locks and you suffer from a gamebreaking glitch that prevents you from finishing the game.
    Literally, the one chance you get to backtrack, and it's because they forgot to program the door to lock after completing the room, resulting in the previous room trying to make you do a combat encounter you already finished. It's actually hilarious when you think about it.
    ~~~
    As for the graphics, for a game that came 3 years after Prime 3, I find it inexcusable. It's just...UGLY. Why does the Varia Suit look like its made out of rubber? Never mind the absolutely bizarre shade of snot-yellow its been painted, for some equally bizarre reason. The areas are bland and uninspired, and the same goes for the enemies. I mean, I guess this is more proof of Retro's technical know-how and prowess, but damn, Other M just so nasty looking.
    ~~~
    Also, I would have to disagree with the utility of the finisher moves. With the exception of bosses and some end game enemies, most enemies can only be taken out with a finisher when they're so weak that a charged shot will take them out. I don't understand the point of the mechanic. For a character that uses almost exclusively ranged attacks against enemies that almost exclusively use melee attacks, you have to leave YOUR optimal combat range and enter THEIR optimal combat range to do an attack that is as effective as just shooting them once (or twice) more...doubly so since they're going to be stunned. It's flashy, yes, but there's no real reward for it. Maybe if you got HP or Missiles from the enemies (think Zandatsu's from MGR:R), it would have a usage...but like most mechanics in Other: M, it just...doesn't.

      "Miselus Everything is cancer these days. There's several things about the story that are misunderstood." You cannot misunderstand anything in the world bad enough to end up with a story as terrible as OtherM. In fact, there is a misunderstanding: One among the writers thinking this was a shippable story. You likely do not have much knowledge about writing or translation, but if you did, you'd realize that OtherM fails even on a text level. There are grammar artifacts all over the game that you'd usually see in a VERY rough Relay Translation, before it gets actual editing. "A certain...", terms like "The Deleter" or the way the monologue keeps repeating instead of implying - the game is filled with cases where the writing fails even on a basic translation level, even ignoring the actual content they delivered.

      Fen Y Final Fantasy VII also had those issues, yet lots of people celebrate as one of the best game stories ever. There's a lot more to quality stories than just focusing on those details. I've definitely experienced much worse stories in gaming. The Thief reboot having one of them.

      Unshaved Malevolence Actually Fire Emblem is historically MUCH less popular than Metroid. In fact the only reason it seems to be more popular now is that they just aren't making anything serious for the Metroid audience right now. It only recently gained that 2 million popularity(which is actually like 1.8 million range which is around what the series left off on without OM or FF). Prime 1 and the Original sold much better than any FE game. Metroid has routinely sold over a million copies in all major installments getting over 1 million copies sold and only spin offs and remakes like zero mission not selling very much. Even then the Metroid Prime Trilogy remake sold as well as Fire Emblem 7 that sits at the high end of popularity for FE uptill the tone shift and casualization elements took a large amount of precedence. Nintendo easily could have been giving Metroid Attention and gotten sales with out having to change the tone or base nature of gameplay and instead just relied on the fundamental aspects of what made the game's popular in the first place easily instead of letting it die just because everyone hated Other M.

Because Other M was advertised as a cross between 2D and 3D gameplay, I picked it up and played it. And because of that I then became interested in getting the Prime Trilogy when I saw it available on Wii U download. I really like the 3D Metroid games now. The gameplay was horrible. Very little exploration. Too much hand-holding. Samus doesn't use her abilities when you want to. Being able to simply stop to recharge missiles whenever you want. Why do you need missile expansions when you can just stop to recharge them!? This makes the majority of upgrades you are looking for while exploring completely unappealing.

      Oliver Mattausch The manga did that already. It wasn't good but it wasn't nearly as bad as Other M. Also she wasn't submissive in the manga.She was a weaker person but she wasn't submissive. Although that was because it was an origin story so she was supposed to be different. Heck she punched her adoptive dad in the face in the manga for being a dick to nature. She would've wreckt Other M Adam for being a dipshit and ignored him like how she sorta casually ignores people ordering her in the manga when she feels it is the right thing to do.Heck if it was Manga Adam people would've liked him and this game a lot more. If you want to read it you can find a fan translation somewhere. Other M takes a lot of plot points from the manga and fusion but does them worse so if you think you want to read an origin story with some of other m's vibes just less terrible feel free to just google Metroid manga.

    It's like that sneaky shit some friends try when they crossed the line with a prank, so they try to hint at it and go "come on, it wasn't ALL bad" and sometimes hold a tool from that prank in your face going "see, it's okay, we're not trying it again". ***** Yeah, it really seems like Sakamoto was aiming to turn Samus into his personal wet dream - which may also explain why she's such a nonsensically monotone, yet emotionally fragile character in Other M. It's sorta reminiscent of "erotic" female announcer voices, except that the VA (I think it was Jennifer Hale) isn't really good at that, and it further diminishes Samus' orevious role as an unstoppable Determinator.
      Though I gotta admit, her Jet Stilettos are actually pretty cool, and they support her acrobatic capabilities - but I doubt that somebody could move that well in heels. Also, those are really Smash logic only, so I don't care.

      Yeah, bothered me as well. I think they're just using it because it's the newest one. Could be wrong though.
      I personally prefer Retro Studios take on her. Their suits are far more detailed. I love how they added and expanded her arsenal and universe.
      The suit Team Ninja did looks so old and outdated whereas the Metroid Prime suits still look great, far ahead of their time in comparison. That's a sign of fine quality craftsmanship, right there.
      I never liked Zero Suit Samus' design since Echoes. Her look just feels too unnatural. I prefer seeing her in her civvie clothes. I feel like Retro Studios should just do their own thing.
      I never really liked it when they reverted back to the older designs like her gunship in Echoes. The first Metroid Prime's gunship is my favorite. Those jets that swivel around look so cool. It's also fairly realistic if you look at the way satellites are designed.
      I also hate that in Other M, her suit can be magically conjured on and off. There should be a physical, tactile way to get the suit on and off. That way it's more believable. You would care more about her and feel every hit.
      It's like CG compared to practical effects. That'd be cool.

    Metroid Prime is a PRIME example of a series that did the jump to 3D incredibly well, hell, it's one of my top 10 games of all time, I could replay that shit over and over, the visuals still hold up since they were not only very good back then but also stylized in a very subtle way.

      Final Mission Resolve, when Samus continued with her mission after Adam's death, running down the corridor as parts of it were jettisoned into space, destroying all space pirates in her way. Desperate Struggle was quite good too, when she was remembering those who had died, and though she had less than ten seconds until impact, chose to get up, and try to destroy the Queen Metroid. Approaching Sector Zero is a beautiful buildup piece, and really feels like a climax is coming. I can list more
      The music is for the most part atmospheric. That type of music isn't inherently bad, and personally I found it did its job well, and brought more life to the areas. Some of it included weird breathing sound effects, that made it seem like creatures were round every corner. It's subjective. Not iPod material, and I will agree it is not as memorable as some other Metroid soundtracks, but while playing the game it works well enough - and there are some tracks that were memorable

    Here is an idea i had for the autorization thingy, let us say that the station has security measures to avoid the use of heavy armaments, and because of that Samus is forced to power down while Adam work to lift the security, that can be worked to the hell run scenario, let us say is something similar to fusion where the station is on risk of detonating and Samus has to go trought the fire zone and in the end adam disables the security enough for the varia armor to be activated

    When I heard Other M's powerups would be authorized by some Federation C.O., I assumed it would be a sort of situation where some stick in the mud doesn't trust Samus (she's a loose cannon, hand in your gun and badge) and forcibly locks her suit functionality down and he only begrudgingly unlocks certain functions when it becomes obviously necessary. While this wouldn't have fixed the setup from a gameplay perspective, it would have made the narrative a bit easier to swallow.

    As a hardcore fan of the original games, I wasn't too fond of Prime's linear design, lock-on aim (which would normally be inexcusable for any other first person shooter) and the constant battle of 3rd/1st person that it necessarily had to based on Samus's abilities. But when I heard of Other: M and the fact that it was a direct follow-up to Super Metroid I was super pumped and bought it release day. Six hours of baby bottle ships, borderline-Oedipus-level obsession of motherhood and confused gameplay later, I'm fairly convinced Metroid is dead.

    Playing Bayonetta 1 and 2 with the Samus outfit feels more like the "Action" Metroid game they were going for than Other M. Pretty sad when a bonus feature in another game succeeds where the core game failed. Honestly, I wouldn't mind Platinum Games getting a crack at what Other M was trying to do (I'd even accept a full remake of Other M with Story and gameplay elements fixed/redone). Granted, I would also like to see a proper 2D Metroid game as well (an official remake of Metroid 2 springs to mind). Just a thought.

    Meanwhile the Prime series is celebrated and critically acclaimed with the best sales in the series, and its expansive lore is enticing for new fans. Prime 4's E3 unveiling was hype for everyone and now everyone is EAGERLY anticipating Retro's return to the Prime Universe.

    I honestly will find it baffling if Nintendo decides to put the entire Metroid series to rest because of Other M and Federation Force. One bad game and a spin-off title no one wanted for one of the most critically acclaimed video game series of all time, and they just throw in the towel on the whole thing?
    Nintendo, we want to see a Metroid game that follows its own legacy with the quality of level design, controls, and gameplay mechanics the franchise is known for. Do that and us players will be more than happy. Heck, I don't think people would have minded Federation Force if it had not been the first Metroid game in about half a decade, but it was not the time and place for it. Not with everyone wanting to see Metroid going back to form.

      I'm super ambivalent about the new god of war. As action games go... it was pretty shit compared to others, so i never cared at all to play them much. Also, Kratos was a total dickbag. When he showed up and wasn't "the worst person imaginable." i was incredibly surprised. I'm curious as to how the game will actually *play* and i don't want it to be some Last of us inspired punch-laser fest- i'd LIKE to see a good action game. But if it's just a pretty good game that simply isn't really an action game anymore, well, God of War isn't that big of a loss. It feels like some kind of funhouse mirror "Donte".

    Yeah when people shit on this game its always focused on the story. Some (maybe too many) frequently say that the story was really bad but the gameplay was ok or fun. I'm always baffled by this. Not only was the gameplay not fun in general but as a metroid game is was about as far as you could stray from the formula without being ludicrous.
    Heading down straight corridors, having doors lock behind you, being told exactly where to go at all times, no exploration or sense of discovery, does this sound like a metroid game to you?

  • @BenMan8881
    @BenMan8881 7 лет назад +3

    what everyone doesn't realize about the whole authorization thing, is the setting. First of all, Samus is a Bounty Hunter, but when she enters the station, the station is practically under Martial Law. Basically, this means that the area is under military law. Go against the law, and you could be considered public enemy #1. Adam's orders are clear, "You don't move unless I say so, you don't attack unless I say so." This means that if she does activate a weapon without Adam's orders, that'd break the law. Now, you could argue that Samus could go on her own, but that would not only be stupid for her, but out of already established character for her. It would be stupid because, even though she could kill all the soldiers that tried to stop her that are on station, but what about the rest of the Galactic Federation? Adam can see everything Samus can, so is she betrayed everyone, Adam could immediately alert the G.F. That'd be bad for two reasons. One, there goes her paycheck. Two, now every single soldier would be out to kill her. She's good, but not good enough to take out all of the G.F.'s forces. It would also go against her character as established up to this point. She has a good heart. She isn't going to just kill everyone or go against the orders of someone who means well. If you need proof, just look at the library of Metroid games. Most of the events within the games would not happen if Samus was a heartless character. Heck, some of the best games in the franchise wouldn't have even happened.
    We'll check each one and see why Samus started each mission, shall we? Metroid 1: Bounty and Revenge. Metroid 2: Bounty. Super Metroid: Distress call. Metroid Prime 1: Distress Signal. Metroid Prime 2: Bounty. Metroid Prime 3: Bounty. Metroid Other M: Distress call. Metroid Fusion: Bounty.
    Of these games, which one would the heartless Samus do? Metroid 1, Metroid 2, Metroid Prime 2, Metroid Prime 3.
    Huh... isn't everyone saying that Super Metroid and Metroid Prime 1 are the best in the franchise? If Samus was heartless, they would never have existed. Also, some events would have changed. In Metroid 2, Samus would have killed the baby Metroid at the end, causing her to die on SR-388 before the events of Metroid Fusion took place. Also, Metroid Prime 2 would only be about half as long as the only reason why she was on the planet in the first place was to find and rescue some G.F. troopers.

      If it's one thing Team Ninja is definitely weak at it's atmosphere. Completely the wrong fit for Metroid.

    Cool ideas GamingBrit. What bugged me most about the first person mode is that t was completely superfluous. You could've mapped the missiles to the B button or the Minus button (and made it a toggle system just like Metroid 1 and Super). Honestly, I think that the concentration system could have worked if it were more like Dark Souls where they were limited until you made it to a save point.
    For Example: Samus can only use concentration once. Once she decides to replenish her energy or missiles, that's it until the next save point or e-recovery tank. It would force the player to conserve ammo, and prioritize their resources. Do you replenish your missiles now, or save your one concentration until your in danger. Skilled players could afford to replenish their missles because they don't get hit.

    For the Metroid fans starving for a metroid title, here's an upcoming (and I do mean upcoming) indie game called Haydee. ruclips.net/video/mHHKD7QA3yg/видео.html
    Yes, the proportions are over the top sexy. But disengage those puritan, feminist goggles (it's a fucking video game), you'll see the closest attempt an old school Metroidvania title with 3rd person shooting, platforming, and action-adventure with a female protagonist.
    Long story short it's Other M done better and not like shit.
    Plus, I personally support it because sexiness and sexy women in video games have become demonized and shamed.

      I genuinly can't wait till Haydee comes out, the demo played great. Gotta love that peoples only arguements against the game are about Haydee being an "Over sexualized main character". Most of the complainers haven't even played the fucking demo.

      Nice try, developer of Haydee, but it's probably not the best idea to sell your game to the same fanbase that has the fully covered, bulky, amazonian Samus as their heroine.
      At least put your waifu sports shorts or some shit. The panties will take most people out of the game, and it has nothing to do with LE SJW BOOGEYMAN.

      The story of Other M was just such incoherent, cringey weebshit, that I'd honestly prefer more Federation Force (though ideally they'd get off both shitty sub-franchises and give us another REAL Metroid game).
      Other M's story and characterization of Samus made me temporarily embarrassed to be a Metroid fan, whereas Federation Force largely flew under my radar and was at least inoffensive from a story/character standpoint (because it hardly had any).
