I read on Wikipedia that he emigrated to Canada at 3 months old. I thought to myself “maybe he doesn’t have a heavy Korean accent in real life” so i came to this video. Initially he spoke in the accent, and then he switched to his real voice lol. I was fuckin blown away
You're a fantastic actor. I will admit i know you from Kim's Convenience. I absolutely loved the show and the whole cast. Hate that it ended. Best wishes for all your future endeavours
Kims Convenience is my comfort watch. It is so refreshing to see "us" just being regular stumbling people ( not doing karate etc.). I am Asian american, 66 born and grew up in the States. A lifetime of not seeing myself in media. It's getting better and hopefully will continue for the next generation. Also appreciate the Canadian sensibility....you all seem more down to earth then in shows from the U.S.
Congratulations Paul Sun-Hyung Lee on your acting successes. I admit I first saw you acting as Appa on the top notch TV series, Kim's Convenience. It was extremely regretful that the TV series was cancelled as it showcased the valuable and enormous contribution made to Canada by Asian immigrants. All the best to you Mr. Lee.
As a Korean American who grew up in the 80s you're absolutely right about the Asian characters back in the day. You and so many others have changed the landscape of roles for Asian characters and I'm so proud to be part of this community 🇰🇷 Also, Kim's convenience is a delight - my hubby and I are rewatching it LITERALLY right now!
I've only heard or the show recent, but when you said you immigrated in 1972 I was shocked you had such a strong Korean accent. You are very thoughtful. You remind me of what Raul Julia was about in his love of shakespeare. Also it seems more and more good actors are coming from Canada.
i will not lie,,, this almost made me cry. his message is so impactful and is really reflected in the choice of his words. paul we love and appreciate you so much.
I’ve never heard your “true voice” and am glad I heard it. Thank you for entertaining the world, and I look forward to seeing you on more adventures on the big screen.
I embrace you, Paul. Much love. Unfortunate that the show did not listen to any issues the cast with stereotyping your characters. Amazing cast. Good luck and continue success.❤️🇨🇦
I was actually surprised when he started talking with the same accent as the tv show.. was expecting him to be a character like that uncle roger guy.. am glad for the switch to canadian accent. more true.. more real.
I'm so excited to see Paul in his new upcoming role as Iroh. I fell in love with him through his role as Mr. Kim, and then his interviews and I'm excited to watch him grow as an actor and hope he continues to get great roles.
I think he's great for playing Uncle Iroh, couldn't be more happy with this casting choice because of the knowledge and wisdom that he has gained just like Iroh
I loved Paul in Kim's Convenience. I have seen him in a few other roles, though I don't remember the names of the characters off the top of my head. I am especially excited to see him in the live action ATLA show. He is the only one who can even begin to approach filling the giant shoes Mako left behind with the character of Iroh.
So well said. So eloquent but also so simply put that it doesn't feel complex even though it is. Just searched "Paul Sun-Hyung Lee interview" on RUclips after a couple of episodes of Kim's Convenience because I thought "That can't be this guy's real accent, I wonder if he actually has a (softer) accent irl or has no accent at all and it's 100% acting". Wanted to hear your real voice/accent, but got slammed by a therapy session on acceptance of societal expectations to embrace yourself as a form of healing and moving forward. Just wow.
I just finished watching Season 1 of Kim's Convenience & something prompted me to check if that is how you sounded in real life. I have to say I love Mr Kim's Korean voice
I had the honor of meeting him in person this year at a convention in Washington State USA. He even signed a copy of my last samurai dvd copy because it’s the only connection to Kim’s Convenience. He saw it and loved it. And signed it as Appa. What a cheerful and happy person he is. Thank you Mr. Paul Sun-Hyung Lee for meeting you at that time.
You're a great actor, Sir Paul Sun-Hyung Lee. I am watching Kim's Convenience a second time, just because I love your humor, the Korean family dynamics, and the episodes. It's a great show and I think even though the Creator is tired/burned out, he must hire fresh writers to keep writing, even make this a social media experiment where people who are truly fans of this show must be allowed to contribute and come up with original scripts. There should also be freedom to find producers who are willing to invest money into this show to make it profitable, and keep going for another 5 years, if possible. That's my 2 cents. But I doubt anyone will read this. Anyways, good luck with your career and your co-stars as well. Thank you for your wonderful acting and your co-stars all of them. Great cast. Thank you all.
I hope that you Paul can bring this kind of wisdom to the role of Uncle Iroh. Admittedly I haven't seen Kim's convenience, however seeing this level of wisdom from the actor about to or in the process of playing him makes me as a fan of the show feel very comforted. I can see why they cast you and look forward to your and the teams interpretation of the character
I knew they were going to take the live action Avatar seriously when they cast him as Iroh. Mako left behind tremendous shoes to fill and it was always going to be difficult to find someone who can represent what he helped create. Paul is the only person I can think of who embodies the strength, kindness and wisdom of Iroh.
I recently discovered Kims convience. And I love it , just watched an episode. But personally I never thought you were doing anything but playing a part. Or should I say all of you. I love the show because of the characters humor n the personality each of you have given. And your interactions w each other. I see you. And think you are all great.
I just discovered it on Netflix a few months ago. I'm on season 5 and knowing it's the final season breaks my heart because I love this show just as much as I did the office
I first heard of Mr Sun-Hyung Lee in his role as Carson Teva in The Mandalorian and other spin-off Star Wars shows, so actually when he spoke with a Korean accent on Kim's Convenience... THAT was a shock to me! I had the opposite experience of most people [I think]. I always assumed he was Canadian/American (and yes, I know the two countries are very different but even *I* as an American get the two accents confused).
I first remember seeing Paul in a regular role where the whole premise was the interactions of commuters on a train. I don't recall the role being Asian stereotyped. Probably not many people have heard of this show called Train 48. Actually when I next saw him on TV in Kim's Convenience. I was shouting that's the guy from the Train show! As an Asian and a Canadian. I wish him all the success.
Interesting talk, Paul. I came here after reading that you will be playing Iroh in the upcoming Avatar live-action series. I have such high hopes for the show. The original has a special place in my heart, at the centre of which is Iroh. Admittedly, I have not seen any of your work (yet). But that which I have seen and read of you has been encouraging. I wish you all the best in the role, and I'm sure you're going to nail it. You have his look, and I'm getting the vibe that you'll ably channel his caring, wise, and humorous personality. Bear in mind this story is one of the most loved tales to ever hit the small screen. And its fans are behind you. However, the original is not perfect, and the upcoming live-action show has the potential to expand on what made it great. Just know you have been cast as ostensibly the most universally beloved character in the story. It could be another career-defining role for you, just like Appa was. And I hope that is what it becomes. I wish you the best of luck and can't wait to see you play the smelly, tea-obsessed, loveable powerhouse that is the Dragon of the West :)
Paul super excited to see you as Uncle Iroh. Super happy for you! wish you the best of luck! P.S. you got me when you started to talk in Mr.Kims voice. i was like "wait, thats not his real voice."
In praise of myself ( which doesn’t happen often ) I didn’t think that you necessarily spoke that way in reality. I did wonder to myself what you might sound like in real life, was it Canadian or Korean or maybe even a French accent in Canada. But I can proudly say that I didn’t expect that to be your real accent. It did cross my mind that that was how you spoke, but it was part of a bigger thought process. I love Mr Kim and family, it has actually got me through some rough times, so thank you for your wonderful work. ❤
Very well said. I personally think that Appa and Iroh are very different characters and when I saw your casting announcement; I was beyond excited. I know you will bring one of my favorite characters from the show to life in a beautiful way. I thought they cast his role perfectly. Your talent is recognized!!
Thanks Paul for playing Appa, I really love the character and the show, because I saw a clip of the first episode the first few minutes. I enyjoyed the series and watch it more times over because I got you guys in Kim's convenient was my favuorite family. excellent work.
Kims convenience was a great show...I used to live on Bicknell street in Toronto in the early 80s and there was a Korean store there around the corner from where we live and this show reminds me of it. They were wonderful store owners who everyone knew in this neighborhood. Cheers 🍻
I have never seen Kim's convenience or the mandalorian so all these interviews are the only reference I have of him, and when atla live action comes out it will be my first time seeing him act and I can't wait.
I have to agree. I am an English teacher in Japan. There are not many opportunities outside teaching English over here. However, there is a chance to build outside that box if I make the right choices. Good video.
I actually learned about you from The Mandalorian. I heard of the show, but I've never watched ANY CBC original series. None of them were any good. I decided to watch season 1 of Kim's Convenience and loved it. My favorite scene is when Appa had to demo strate martial arts against that huge guy and Janet says Good luck Appa, and you say Goodbye Janet. I laughed so hard at that scene.
Me and my girlfriend loved seeing you on Kim’s convenience and am super excited to see you as uncle Iroh. We are so happy for you and are super excited for you
When you started speaking, I was surprised. I thought "wait - the Korean accent is real?! I know you are Canadian and I know you are an actor, so your "real" voice isn't a shock. I'm glad you're able to use it in other projects.
This show brought me such joy. The world needs more shows like this. Even my young children loved it, each actor was magnificent and I thank them for playing the roles of life roles of so many. ❤️❤️
Watched me Kim's convenience , didn't think That this actor actually had the accent until the first couple of seconds of this video. 😂 Was super confused and then he started talking in his normal accent. Also super psyched to see him as Uncle iroh!!! He made us love Mr Kim so much, We already love Uncle iroh now we are going to the character even more!!
A big fan of yours, Mr. Lee. You really add depth to your portrayals. It's easy to get type-cast, but even the iconic Appa of Kim's Convenience does not do that. You were just as convincing as Teva as you are as Appa. Say... can you get me Simu's autograph? LOL.
I love the show and I always get a great laugh out of you guys 😂, showing lots of love from the bay area, california coming from a filipino ❤🇵🇭 I love my korean folks more than a million
Kim convenience is one of my favorite show on Netflix and yes seeing this video completely blow my mind but good for you and I respect where you coming from

Good luck on your role in ATLA. Iroh is my favourite character of all of time. Can't wait to watch it.
Now, have u enjoyed ATLA live action yet?☺

@@yabada7866, did you like Paul as Iroh, at least?
@Infinite_Ethan03 not really. As a standalone character, he was alright, but I didn't like him as a reference to the original Iroh.
