Man, love this content. Be careful in publicly admitting to buying backlinks. I just had a colleague who posted a similar video (different competition) and got the GMB taken down. Not a single mention of the GMB profile at all, but somehow not only did the site get deranked but the GMB profile also tanked. You can never be toooooooo careful with Google :)
Hmm... I can't remember in that video, but I'm pretty sure most of the top competitors were also listed on the specific site that was mentioned. I'm curious if there was another reason why your colleague was downranked? Like, did they dip severely, or were they de-indexed? 🤔 I do appreciate the word of caution, though, Mr. Local SEO Nerd (digging the new handle 😉), and you know I like keeping the convo going.
For people that come by later, this is the policy that is being referred above: developers.google.com/search/docs/essentials/spam-policies#:~:text=Exchanging%20money%20for%20links I suppose "buying backlinks" is a misnomer. I spent less than $20 to be listed on a high-quality directory - which is important to point out because paying to be listed on a low-quality directory is against the same policy: developers.google.com/search/docs/essentials/spam-policies#:~:text=Low%2Dquality%20directory. I used the term "crappy" in the video facetiously.
