    So, even at the beginning, Microsoft tried to buy their way into the market by acquiring giant gaming publishers? Why am I not surprised?
    Also, nice choice on the SmackDown 2 menu music!

    • @nick6var
      @nick6var Год назад +1

      In the end, Microsoft did buy a number of game developers, like Bungee and Rare, to ensure that they had enough quality games to supply their hardware with the games needed to keep it alive.

    • @ShanetheFreestyler
      @ShanetheFreestyler Год назад +1

      @@nick6var That just made me think of something. What about some of Microsoft's existing franchises at the time? Where was the Xbox version of Monster Truck Madness? The only console versions were on the N64 and GBA respectively.
      I'd also ask were was Motocross Madness, but I think at this time Rainbow Studios were already working on ATV Offroad Fury for PS2, so that probably wouldn't have happened unless they had a different developer like they did for Midtown Madness 3 while original devs, Angel Studios went on to develop Midnight Club. (And in both cases, I consider ATV:OF and Midnight Club to be the true sequels to MXM2 and MTM2 due to same devs.)

    The only thing Nintendo did wrong was that they made the Nintendo 64 a cartridge based system instead of a CD-ROM system.

      @@maroon9273 Capcom, Square, Enix and every other third party that worked with them during the NES and SNES era, begged Nintendo to go to the CD-Rom format. Konami at the time was the only company that weren’t worried about what Nintendo did.

    • @Maikeru722
      @Maikeru722 Год назад +1

      They should have released the 64DD sooner. I've read that the system was ready, but Nintendo wanted to sell more n64s first.

    • @StreetsofATL_19
      @StreetsofATL_19 Год назад +2

      @@Maikeru722 The 64 DD! I have one of those. It probably would have helped a little but the CD-Rom format was the way to go! It had the storage capacity to fully optimize the full potential of the N64’s 64 bit abilities. N64 games should look better than they do!

    • @SuperSaiyanMusashi
      @SuperSaiyanMusashi Год назад +3

      @@StreetsofATL_19 And while not worried per se, Konami certainly favored the CD format. Metal Gear Solid, Castlevania Symphony, Dance^2 Revolution, Suikoden, and many others all skipped the N64 in favor of the PS.

    Just as Microsoft tried to partner with Nintendo, Nintendo tried the same thing nearly 20 years earlier with Atari!
    Nintendo wanted to release the Famicom in the US and tried to partner with Atari, Inc to brand it as an Atari system. The shifting fortunes of the 1983 game market, the in-development 7800 system, the firing of Atari president Ray Kassar, the lateness of the successor, Atari's false outrage at the Coleco Adam computer seemingly violating an agreement with Nintendo over Donkey Kong's computer rights... ALL OF THIS happened to leave the deal to fall apart.

    You say Nintendo hasn't embraced VR yet but that's not 100% true. They did Labo VR for the Switch and even updated some of their AAA games with VR support. It's not a full on VR system but it's not like they are ignoring VR entirely.

    I'm not 💯 about this, but I have a distinctive memory of a hotel tv that had a Nintendo console built into the tv that allowed you to put your game into the tv. It was in the states somewhere. I don't have a passport. It might have been a N64 even but it definitely had the ability to read your cartridges from home.

      I own one, have had it since 2001. Here's an apt analogy of the situation in 2002: 4 countries sent their armies to fight each other, Sega got there first but immediately failed as a nation before the army was fully supplied even. Then Sony rolled in like the ww2 red army. The DC competed in the 6th Gen just as much as the Jaguar (jag-wahr) did in the 4th (or 5th?)

    OG Xbox sold maybe 20% more consoles than the GameCube at the most. I think it's actually closer to 15%. That's hardly "obliterating" them. GameCube may have sold more software units; they certainly had more Million-Sellers.

    The Sega talks happened before the Sony-Nintendo reunion. Infact, it was the announcement of the latter that took place on the day Sega released the Sega CD, which of course happened without Sony when all was said and done.
    And Sony being painted as victims was hypocritical. Lets face it, they were parasites. They were basically Starro from the DC-verse. They owned the means of production, and the SuperCD, which was already being used as an e-book format, would have meant another media format to print money from had it succeeded. (This is why they tried so hard with Betamax, miniDisc, Memory Stick Pro, Blu-ray, etc.)
    Also, the XBox went way against Nintendo's, and Japan's for that matter, aesthetics. People may laugh at the "lunch pail" design of the Gamecube, and it didn't do many favors in the west aesthetically, but the XBox was basically MS burning money to get into the industry (they lost hundreds per unit, it was made of off the shelf parts that were incapable of die shrinks), and Nintendo wouldn't have fared as well as MS with it, much less better. They would have lost money and would have had to learn to develop around another company's hardware. Nintendo's been vertically oriented to the point their hardware teams work in symbiosis with their software teams. (If only Sega had that degree of unity.)

    • @maroon9273
      @maroon9273 Год назад

      Lack of unity sega had got them out of the hardware market. Plus, led to saturn failure and dreamcast short lifespand.

    • @nick6var
      @nick6var Год назад +2

      @@maroon9273Sega essentially evolved into a two-headed dog in the mid-1990s, with Sega of Japan and Sega of America both fighting over which direction to take. SOJ went too far in exerting their power over the whole company, undermining SOA and also weakening the entire company to the gaming community. The Saturn was successful in Japan, but the failure in the US and the 32x failure globally killed Sega's momentum. Bridges were burned, and when the Dreamcast was doing it right, it was simply too late.

  • @iampoch01
    @iampoch01 Год назад +3

    IIRC, Nintendo do not sell their hardware at a loss. Sony started that trend, as it was the only way for them to make the, at that time, technologically superior Playstation. For third party publishers, it was still a big win because publishing their games on their platform is still cheaper overall because of the CD format.

    • @greenkoopa
      @greenkoopa Год назад +1

      Sega should've done so much more with the Sega CD!! Make a Saturn-looking console in 92 with the GeneDrive cart slot to play those, and also as a memory card slot. Update it in 93 with a double speed disc drive and make it cheaper...what ifs

    • @ericp631
      @ericp631 5 месяцев назад

      That and Sony offered way better terms for third parties at the time, basing their model off how the music industry handled cd's while both Sega and Nintendo kept terms the same as they always had
