Hi Kristen, I've been seeing for 60 years and still found your tips useful and, may I say, inspiring. Especially about bold colours. Clever you. Thanks, Laura, Sydney
These are all really great tips. Sewing is a definitely a journey and a learning path that can teach us precious skills for life in general with the added bonus that we can wear it.
I love this channel :). I'm a curvy person, very large bust, and have always stayed away from prints feeling they draw attention to unwanted areas but I absolutely love the fabrics you use. I am a brand new sewer, life long knitter trying for another skill, and you have really inspired me with the things you make and the prints you use. Thank you so much xxx
You really can wear any print you want! There are definitely no rules! Only clothing that you feel great in or just bored with. I always feel amazing in a bright print! I can’t wait for you to evolve in your sewing journey ❤️
I'm with you regarding colour and prints. I love them. I don't like black so I don't have it in my wardrobe and I don't have many neutrals either. Lots of great advice, Kristen. Thanks.
Hi Kristen just wanted to say a huge thank you for your Chanel. Since being introduced to it at Xmas I have gotten back into sewing & I’m thoroughly enjoying being creative again. As a senior I find it hard to find clothing I like, so I’m on a huge learning curve, re indie patterns, new types of knit fabrics & you tube channels. So much still to learn. Keep up the good work 💕💕
Hi Kristen, great advice that I needed to hear. I have been buying fabrics on sale to make my tops and dresses. They luckily worked out, but the fabrics were initially bought to learn on. I wanted to tell you that your inspiration to sew garments for myself has encouraged me many times. Buying fabrics is my favorite part of sewing. I can spend hours shopping for a small stash!
Omgosh, you so right about this topic. Just a bit of a confession... I have a lot of fabric in my stash, I have discovered a couple of great on line pattern companies just this year. I don’t buy too many rtw clothes.i find that they’re not made to last and sometimes they don’t last as long. Being able to create my own personal wardrobe just for me is empowering for my confidence in not only wearing but also sewing. Sewing my own clothes is very individual and I feel special wearing them because no one else is wearing the same outfit in my town. Thank you for sharing this with us. Keep up the Amazing work. Cheers from South Australia
2020 taught me a lot, like sewing what I actually need instead of dresses. There were some big gaps in my wardrobe. It's also very efficient to batch cut. Buying too many patterns is a huge problem here in the USA because the $1.99 sales are so frequent and Spending $ on quality over quantity requires discipline. Oh before I forget, you and Andrea (beyondthepinkdoor) are like my colour-sisters! I love, love, LOVE colour and prints. The brighter, the better!
Thank you Kristen! I related to all of your points! I have possibly learned the most from garments that didn't work out. Like you, I enjoy the one-at-a-time-start-to-finish approach.
How did you know all this stuff was in my brain? Sometimes when people speak you wonder how they knew what was in your head, and you are speaking to me! Such good, wonderful advice. Thank you my friend! ❤️🤗🌺
Great tips. My favorite is about making a pattern as many time as you like. 😂 I’ve made the sagebrush top 3 times and am looking forward to more. Thank you for all the great tips.
Great advice Kristen..my problem is the fit. I have no one to help with that. I tend to get a garment out that has a decent fit, and I measure that. So you have inspired me. I ordered a pattern I saw online today and will go fabric shopping when I get it.. thank you for the inspiration.. you daughters are beautiful as you are❤️
Brilliant advice. Thank you for the valuable messages. I tend to use the same half dozen patterns over and over, adapting them to create garments I am always excited to finish and wear. I never buy clothes now and feel very blessed to have this skill. As you say, there is a plethora of advice on adapting patterns.
Hi Kristen! I have been away for a while as my husband had a massive heart attack on 11/23/20 and needed much care during his recuperation time. He is back on his feet now, so I have more time to get back to watching my fav sewing vlogs! This vlog came at the perfect time as I am really needing to get my sewing started for my Spring and Summer tops. I have pants that I love and enough of them so now I will concentrate on the tops to go with them. I loved all of the advice you gave here and really needed the info on building up my confidence. I have picked out very simple patterns and have purchased some really beautiful cottons and silks to wear as camis under the lighter weight cottons. Thank you for all the advice! I needed to hear it all.
Peggy, I'm so sorry to hear that and I wish your husband all the best in his recovery too! You take care too because the carer always needs care too xx
Great advice. I’m so attracted to those gorgeous vintage tea dresses.. but in reality I don’t wear those kind of things as I mostly stay home! Really thinking about what ‘my’ style is and what I will actually wear. Thank you
Brilliant advice - I really took this on board Kristen. Stylish loungewear is definitely the answer for me, rather than dresses that I'm not wearing much. And using colour! Thank you once again!
Hi Kristen, it's such a pleasure watching your channel. Your sewing and personality are wonderful, and I enjoy your setting so much! Great ideas today:)
Hi thanks for the great ideas. I have been prone to buy cheap fabric but I am starting to change the way I approach fabric buying. I am going to sew through my stash as much as possible over the next couple of seasons. Also I am going to try to push myself out of my comfort zone and make a few trickier projects definitely a couple of summer dresses using stash. Looking forward to spring here in the UK. Keep up inspiring us.
Such good advice Kirsten. I’ve made a few mistakes with fabrics. I’m more selective now. I also prefer to start and finish one garment at a time. Sewing has certainly kept me sane over the last 12 months.
Love that 'fail' tip. I managed to sew 1 pocket upside down on a dress and didn't realise until almost complete, but i kept it as a little joke for myself. It still looks great on outside, so no one will know unless i tell them. And is also great reminder to self down the track how far i have come when future projects have 2 working pockets 😉
hi Kristen, I'm at the stage of buying fabric when it is cheap/novelty. Have a huge stack, more than I need! Using it to hone my skills lol. May have to sell some. Starting to see the value of having less fabric that is more expensive, but I would get more wear out of.
Great blog and I totally agree with your advice. For me it is all about the fabric and colour. I try to buy good quality in linen or cotton lawn. I have pieces I have been wearing for years and if you work out the cost per wear they are better value. I love the roses in your garden.
What a wonderful episode! One day I hope there will be a sewing meet up here in Australia, so I can get to meet you and spend time with your positive energy and lovely outlook on life and sewing! Thank you!
Today I spent the day organizing my space and the last part I need to do is the hardest part- honing the fabric collection. Thank you for your tips, just what I need as I really think about what I’m tackling!
Great advice . I just made the sashay shorts by pattern emporium . The material was patterned but I did not take much notice . I folded the material crosswise . So now I have one leg with leaves going up and the other leg going down . But they are lovely to wear and will wear them at home .❤️great pattern too.
Lots of things to resonate with. I think what I have learnt the most since taking up sewing again is sew my own style and go at my own pace. There is so much stuff out there it can be overwhelming - but thoroughly enjoying it!!! Love your channel
Hello Kristen, this is an amazing video, packed with great advice and information. I have been sewing for about 5 months and just getting know the different fabrics, quality over quantity is such good advice as I have found out!. Look forward to your next video. X
Love watching you Kristen, you always inspire me! I have been looking to buy the Lady McElroy print you are wearing & have not been able to make up my mind. I absolutely love the print but am concerned that it maybe too flimsy for a dress. Do you think it would require lining? Keep up the fabulous chat!
Colour and pattern is my joy for sure!!!! Ummm I am very guilty of having too many things on the go and far too much fabric....oops! Great tips and guidance...age and size should never be a barrier to being yourself xxxxxxxx
Great info. I just purchased linen in several colors to get a head start on my spring and summer wardrobe. Expecting 2ft of snow tomorrow so sewing spring should warm me up. I love fu ny clothing but mine's a taylored body. Discovered that the hard way years ago. Oh the pictures...

I've lost track of the times I've found some fabric in my drawer and it's not long enough to make anything with as never used to buy much thinking I was saving money. the fabric is still sitting there! I now try to buy more, but only if the price is good.
Thanks, good advice for newbies especially. I do save money by sewing! Part of it is fit, the last time I bought jeans that fit, they were $120 US. The denim and buttons and thread to make them when these wear out aren’t that much, to be sure. And a bra? I cannot even find a bra besides a sports bra, that fits - to the point of having minor surgery because of ill fitting wire bras. I’m a tad over 60, having sewn my own clothes and friends clothes in high school and even earlier, through college, and into a corporate career. As my disposable income grew, I relied on fast fashion. But something in me snapped when forking over that much for jeans, and I haven’t bought a single item of clothes since, going on 16 months. I developed a legging pattern that I cannot find in RTW at all. Priceless. Now sewing garments for grandson, a gangly 15 year old with long arms and really long legs. Parents have to shop or order special to accommodate him, I can sew him these things. At least provide him him with loungewear that fits. Which is basically a 15 year olds wardrobe. those of us with these specialty clothing needs, I can’t be alone, sew because to fit properly in clothes is to look your best. ❤️
Funny about fails, before I got back into clothes making, I had been quilting for years. I made a quilt which hangs in our stairwell. I didn't realize one of the small parts of the block was pieced incorrectly until about 4 yrs later my daughter called attention to it. She thought I had intentionally done that. I said nope. Oops. Well I decided to leave it be. I'm not perfect & that helps to remind me 😊 Still finding my own style here too. I'm finding that some patterns you can figure out to hack without buying yet another pattern. I have way too many but that's ok because my stash is huge too, they go together....lol
Hi Kristen. Thank you, enjoying your video's lm just attempting to make my first woollen tailored coat. I don't like the plain satin linings. Would like a colourful print lining. What can you use instead of the usual lining. Thanks. Bye
The reason for satin linings is so that the lining glides over the clothes underneath, which means the coat won't pull in strange directions as you move. I'd recommend using satin at least for the sleeve linings. You can get print satins which might help. If you object to the texture of satin, try to get something else that also feels smooth to the touch, steer away from things like brushed cotton or slubs as they will cling to your clothes. I know I'm not Kristen but I've just finished a coat using a lining I'm not 100% happy with, so I understand the difficulty you must be having!
@@thedahliasewciety @Ros Burke I've also just discovered the joys of cupro. I haven't made anything up in it yet but it feels like silk and I've read on the internet it is good for linings
Most important to me is to buy quality fabric. this is why I started sewing in the first place. I could not stand wearing all those grey clothes that they had containing too much polyester in the big box stores in the past years. I like what I make so much better even though it is a simple design.
