Fast forward to 2024, and this guy is killing it the majority of his stuff is anime-themed and I'm glad he listened to Virgil about focusing on one theme because based on his pitch this brand was very convoluted
Virgils main point In the conversation (if you were listening) was the concept of 'hyper focus'. The kid has a billion random ideas and references that could be used each as their own brand. Regardless if he picked anime, military, accessibility etc it seems he decided to focus on a concept and follow that hyper focus advice. Fan or not, seems to be working for him
@@stephaniecarter2592 I understood that after I watched the entire video but in regards of anime Virgil was touching on the actual cuts and design of the garments within the anime. It just seems like he went overboard on that 1 piece of advice. I like the stuff shown in this old video more than the current brand. Its literally just screenprinted anime clothes.
@@randomperson4942 agreed, regardless of how its designed it still follows the concept of hyper focus. Its no longer a combo of different things, only anime which has its audience. Could he expand and go deeper than shirts or the concept of anime from a black & white perspective? Yes 100%.

Fr, the kid’s like “oh yea im definitely steering away from anime now and aiming for a more serious style” just to see his brand now is exclusively anime lmao
I’m most impressed with how patient Virgil was with this young man. He has drive and talent and just needs a good mentor. What Virgil is telling him that he’s doing a bit much and there should be a bit of mystery behind what he’s doing.
@@AlexSkyZ8 he is a kid so I wouldn't judge his brand not when he has determination you know many times creative people change and evolve their creations most people dont even want to put the game controller down to be successful this kid is devoted to his grind
Great video. Very thought provoking. This kid's mind is running at 100 miles an hour. He talks a lot but isn't saying much. lol. It's great that Virgil's main point is to bring it back in to a more focused vision. The worldwide concept is cool, but I feel like he could push it further. It looks like he is mostly just putting some flags on blank garments. If I were in his shoes, I would consider making up my own flags that then influence the garments. Also look at other "world" designs like the UN logo or old olympics logos for example and pull design elements from that to create new graphics. Could also look at designing his own "Olympics" logo when he is focusing on a specific country.
He's saying alot but whats the story behind your brand? What is the purpose? He's young and could still be finding his way. Sometimes less is more. Just slow down and look for inspiration within your self and not always on the outside. I still believe he could do big things especially since he was able to speak with Virgil. Will follow the young man and support.
I’m still learning myself with my own brand. Everything is a process. I had to change the name 3 times to get it right. And the story had to come natural to me. Sometimes you have to take that leap and change up some things for the better. Take the time to stand back and analyze your brand as a whole. But this kid is one of us and the fact that he has a big following and to be able to meet Virgil the Legend is truly a blessing.
A lot of the youth/ kids have a similar mindset to the young king. Often, we have so much ideas that we don’t know what to focus on. Virgil is telling him/us that “less is more” & it’s okay to have subgroups when you have a main brand. It’s sad that you have a bunch of people with no avatar tryna bring this kid down when you won’t even say a sentence if u met your idol! Lol
I can tell, kid was nervous and he's done enough to get the attention of this group to get him in front of Virgil. I can tell the first time I presented a starting brand in art school, ive had a history of hating public speaking but I had to learn. I was terrible in my first presentation, but with practice, and continuing to speak, and slowing down i was able to articulate my ideas better to where the audience could get an idea of what I was suggesting. This kids on the right path, he'll get better with each time he does this.
richard tuan ok I’m not the biggest fan of off white, but he is an incredible influence on fashion culture, a creative director for Louis Vuitton and ACW. You may call his stuff garbage but he paved the way for streetwear to merge with high fashion. Also Kanye designed a unique and well made high quality shoe that I think is pretty fascinating, not only that but Virgils ideas may seem simple and that’s why people call him “unskilled” but at the same time the simplicity he’s achieved is unlike anything that’s been done in fashion
Y’all in here going on him but he has a very successful brand. He was very young here. But he didn’t quit now he has contracts with your favorite anime brands 🤷🏽♂️
Funny, Hypland now is one of the best anime clothing stores! Dude found is avenue if he sticks with the anime collabs, shit sells out like Supreme fast lol
crazy that this boy is getting ANY hate. I like how the boy approached it and totally loved Virgil responses, which also show me that he was liking it too. The boy did a decent pitch, and Virgil did drop amazing gems. If you are only interested in what Virgil has to say, just do the 10s fast forward (you’ll be going back to the boy bc Virgil was actually praising what the boy is doing, and you’ll want to understand the whole context). Beautiful video. Thanks for posting and let the GOAT RIP
I can def respect where this kid is coming from. But improving upon your craft also comes from listening to constructive criticism. I think Virgil here pointed out a lot of good things for his brand and why it should head a certain direction with more cohesion. Hope he takes some of the advice.

Little bro talk too much, take a breath, when people talk this much you really loose intrest in what he's talking about because it becomes overwhelming, he should have been picking virgil's brain more asking more questions instead of talking a mile a minute
For sure. It almost came across as if he didn't back/believe in himself. Definitely should've used the opportunity to have a discussion WITH Virgil Abloh
this video was released in 2016 & looking at the 'Hypeland' website now in 2020. i've seen growth of this brands audience . however, i don't see the growth in his pieces / clothes. he didn't really take Virgil's tip with creating different themes for every season. instead the kid jus makes tees or jackets with anime on it. which i honestly see a problem with, if he wants to be "high fashion". i can only visualize his brand in a zumiez or pacsun if we are being honest.
astrowrld I ... shout out to you for not hating and actually critiquing correctly rather than negatively. I think he started doing animated pieces because he got a license with the actually creators to use their shit. Also it be selling out almost instant so why not make free cash I guess

488k on insta now!!!! Hypland is now massive, weird to think a few years ago he only had 16k and making the designs by hand. He really specialised into a niche and then became that niche. Massive respect for him for that.
Everyone forgot the title of this video is what it is and what it embodied. They just met and kid wants to express himself in a short time coz he's nervous and excited?...The kid presented, Virgil listened everything that the kids has to say that's #GOAT level and thats the reason hes there and where here watching and learning...I suggest watch the video again and see how everything has unfolded and learn from it instead of highlighting negativity that i noticed but quickly dismissed because of Virgil "REALLY" spoke and mentored this kid, i admire for his demeanor no non sense no drama straight "im here to help". WE need more of him
You can tell Virgil is a real one because although it seemed he wasn’t interested, he held what he heard from Jordan and gave great criticism!! Wish I had him as a mentor fr
Well his brand has over 100k followers on instagram now. Say what you want but this kids is way smarter than 99% of the people shitting on him in the comments.
Jay Reality that’s not the point, or impressive really, what’s bothering me is that he did not take the advice and better himself or his brand, shit look at the crap he’s producing now
Andrea Tosini This dude is a child. Have you seen virgils early designs? Very trash street wear. I can bet my life that in 10 years this kids design career will be way further than all you kids tryna shit on him. You know why? WORK ETHIC. Everyone starts somewhere remember that.
Jay Reality sure but you could see the vision w virgil and there’s a big diff in the cloth that virgil is cut from compared to this dude.. virgil was around dudes like don c, taz arnold, kanye and ibn jasper he had no choice but to be this great
He knows the market well being the age range of his target demographic. His anime pieces always sell out for HxH and Naruto which havr huge fanbases. The sad part is, it’s very quick trend and statement pieces rather than classics. The materials are generic feeling. Ive ordered a couple of pieces from his site. I think he needs to go more into the design incorporating his brand and anime more in a better collab rather than having cut out of the character and his logo on the same shirt. Like do a military camo pants with the colors of the camo being an anime character and have subtle hints of their characteristic on there. He has a good approach, and I wanna see his brand grow honestly. Got potential. Just needs experience and exposure to more streetwear and fashion
It's all in the Name! Building the brand around that. You should also add a logo at some point. Lastly add a slogan for your brand. That's what I did with my clothing brand 25 years. The name still holds it's weight by itself. When you can strip your brand down to just your name your on to something. If your going global the name must sound global!
I've seen ppl being very hard with this kid and yeah, maybe he's doing some things that might be annoying and aren't the best; but hey, just keep in mind that he went out by himself so maybe he's learning as he goes. It's very hard to figure things when you're going by yourself. Not everybody was born as Virgil.
This kids brand, not that he's a kid anymore is actually doing pretty well. he got the best naruto merch on the market and I'm not a naruto super fan but I do respect anime, The website now looks pretty dope.
Man this kid makes what could’ve been an incredible experience to listen to Virgil and soak up every nugget of real world knowledge, experience & wisdom from success & failure but all he wants to do is talk his product, which needs a ton of work obviously
@@nimouh9816 I like the Dior shit but his own brand seem to gothic to be considered high end or luxury to me. Just my opinion. Were does he make his clothes?
Everybody loves to talk ish and not uplift, but in anything you do there's a learning curve the trick is to take heed when jewels are dropped and continue to push and grow.
I don’t rock wit this brand cause it’s not my style. Just because it’s not for me doesn’t mean it’s not good. He has taken already existing styles and infused his own personal influence into it. Most brands fail at doing that and just recycle what’s already been done. People need to stop hating. This kid is onto something. Think about it, he got this far without formal training. He has a lot to learn and I think he will and in the future you will see great things from him.
@@rashidtaylor1290 If this interview was yesterday then I might have to give you the benefit of the doubt. But this interview was filmed in 2016, and I checked his brand page in 2020; bottom line is it hasn't evolved at all. I disagree that he adds his own influence into anything. A hoodie with flags on it isnt really adding any personal influence. I'm not disparaging his character or anything, but to be fair his designs are basic and are meant for pacsun. Is that bad? Depends on what your goal is. No hate, just my opinion ^_^
Rashid Taylor you have no idea what you’re saying. This brand is the definition of unoriginality, having no personal influence spun into the project. If you walk into your nearest Zumiez you can find dozens of ethik pieces that look exactly the same and are better made that plaster identical designs, to the hypland ones (not to mention they were around way before hypland), all throughout their pieces. Get a grip man, the only reason why it’s relatively successful is why all Zumiez brands are successful and that is the fact that there is a demographic of weebs and “skaters” out there that actually think they’re cool wearing this garbage of screen printed anime characters and embroidered flags.

Hypland today is 100% anime merch. Don't know what he took from Virgil's advice.
Yes 100%.
takes time to change the designs, seasons and to produce it.
it takes time to develop a brand + he already got the rights to put a bunch of anime references on clothing.
I thought Virgil was ripping him in half until I saw the comments in here 😂 if you're reading this my guy you're making money and Young. you got time and got it good
Paul Vass thank you someone not hating, them fuck boys mad his shit sells out instantly and that he didn’t take any of virgils advice good cause virgils an overhyped ass nigga foreal
This video was originally recorded in 2016. This kid is now 23 years old and has a fairly successful brand.
Sure it's heavily anime influenced but Virgil did recommend him to focus on one particular theme.
fast forward 1 year later from your comment and Hypland as a brand is picking up steam like mad, this kid really figured his business out.
R.I.P Virgil.
Fr, the kid’s like “oh yea im definitely steering away from anime now and aiming for a more serious style” just to see his brand now is exclusively anime lmao
@@moosemeat300 The kid in the video, Jordan Bentley, is a multi-millionair now
@@ptg6202 if that what he loves then that’s fine and his brand is super successful now even had a collaboration with Hello Kitty which is a huge brand
488k on insta!!! this brand is now highly successful. Some how this guy has built this massive company.
Totally insane
I’m most impressed with how patient Virgil was with this young man. He has drive and talent and just needs a good mentor. What Virgil is telling him that he’s doing a bit much and there should be a bit of mystery behind what he’s doing.
Facts. Kind of like constructive criticism
@Chance Wilson
Absolutely sir!
Thanks for your comment and enjoy the weekend.
How old is this kid he is out here making moves while clowns out here being negative
he make money that cool but the brand is trash lets be honest
@@AlexSkyZ8 he is a kid so I wouldn't judge his brand not when he has determination you know many times creative people change and evolve their creations most people dont even want to put the game controller down to be successful this kid is devoted to his grind
Frfr
He'll succeed he shouldn't mind the goons
@@tygur23 Bro is 23 and has a good brand with a devoted niche fanbase to his anime shit, he's doing good from what I can see
Great video.
You already know it ain’t different just by the name HYPLAND
To be fair. He said he started the brand 8 years ago
Canned Bread yeah but still he’s older now he should know that name is corny as fuck
Jude Marino the brand has improved like crazy
Aluhx ngl, hypland is being carried by their anime design, not that it’s a bad thing but I think it’s what gave them more success
Alfonso Wow yeah and there stuff ain’t half bad, I own a hxh tee and it looks dope
@Aramis Ponder
Great summation!
Lmao this video is really old. Look up hypland now
@@32afsdf the brand still looks the same if you go on their website
it's strictly anime
I’m still learning myself with my own brand. Everything is a process. I had to change the name 3 times to get it right. And the story had to come natural to me. Sometimes you have to take that leap and change up some things for the better. Take the time to stand back and analyze your brand as a whole. But this kid is one of us and the fact that he has a big following and to be able to meet Virgil the Legend is truly a blessing.
Facts bro
What’s your brand?
TNP _ Its called IOBWOC you can check my work out on my instagram @iobwoc

VEE ANON yeah I totally agree with you about off white
Ha generic people like you
@@stopcryingalready If he didn't acknowledge supreme I think he could've pulled off the bogo thing.
I feel as though any other designer would have treated the interaction with this kid as a waste. Virgil sounded and treated him as a creative person.
What’s his brand btw?
A lot of the youth/ kids have a similar mindset to the young king. Often, we have so much ideas that we don’t know what to focus on. Virgil is telling him/us that “less is more” & it’s okay to have subgroups when you have a main brand. It’s sad that you have a bunch of people with no avatar tryna bring this kid down when you won’t even say a sentence if u met your idol! Lol
It's ironic seeing the comments now kind of roasting this kid, cause HYPLAND is actually very successful now.
yes exactly! good for him
virgil is dropping gems
he dropped a gem on em
I can tell, kid was nervous and he's done enough to get the attention of this group to get him in front of Virgil. I can tell the first time I presented a starting brand in art school, ive had a history of hating public speaking but I had to learn. I was terrible in my first presentation, but with practice, and continuing to speak, and slowing down i was able to articulate my ideas better to where the audience could get an idea of what I was suggesting. This kids on the right path, he'll get better with each time he does this.
Another problem is that for example the H as a logo just makes all of his items look like Huf to people who don’t know. Especially the hats
I swear you could just go to Pacsun and buy a Huf hat and anime shirt and you'd look the same haha
Thats a good point about the logo
Yeah this a bad look for abloh
Simular to like helly Hanson tooo it’s dead the H needs switch that one up
LOLOL.. I HOPE HE LOOKS BACK AT THIS AND PUSH THE V " VEHICLE" HE met virgil and he picked and helped the garments.
This was painful to watch. I applaud Virgil for keeping his composure.
“Uh hmm” STFU
I agree
This is my opinion from the beginning he had no real concept and was just stealing ideas from other people
richard tuan ok I’m not the biggest fan of off white, but he is an incredible influence on fashion culture, a creative director for Louis Vuitton and ACW.
"moving away from anime" bruh just dropped two naruto rugs and 2 naruto hoodies wym
People can change their mind, who cares
He matured and focused his brand all his clothes somehow reference anime now
Facts yo. Lmaoooo
worst part is that the naruto graphic made the hoodies go from alright to unwearable it was totally unnecesary
He needs to drop it, it's played out
THIS IS FANTASTIC! I LOVE HOW VIRGIL IS GIVING BACK TO THE YOUTH OF TODAY AND GIVING THEM GUIDANCE AND ENCOURAGEMENT TO CREATING HIS DREAM.
He’s doing pretty great for a young man especially if Virgil is talking to him about his stuff. Good for him.
This takes me back to my early days in architecture school, trying to present to my tutors lol. The vibes here hit too close to home... 😅
Y’all in here going on him but he has a very successful brand. He was very young here. But he didn’t quit now he has contracts with your favorite anime brands 🤷🏽♂️
it pisses me off how this kid isnt taking anything in.
agreed, he needs to stop rushing to talk again by saying mmhm after every dam sentence when virgil speaks
i agree. NO follow up questions or going deeper for details. I wish he dug in more
He is showing or telling his success instead of asking questions or guidance. Lost opportunity.
How would you know
Funny, Hypland now is one of the best anime clothing stores! Dude found is avenue if he sticks with the anime collabs, shit sells out like Supreme fast lol
I just don’t like brands that look like other brands. This looks like a knock off Huf with the H
enocvargas it really does, I also feel like he should change the name too. If he feels the need to.
Huf literally would write huf on a jacket in either print or embroidery and sell to you idiot fucks for 60-80$ for 3 letters haha. Yeah totally.

I'm pleased that he went with the Anime theme, as he already has a huge fan base; I do like the mentor's explanation of understanding quality at a higher level.

That’s some solid advice. Keep it concise. He seems to be doing good for himself now. Shifted to more of anime. Refined his demographic.

Jay Reality He can have 100k followers but his product and his designs are shit bro. You can find the same design in a H&M or Bershka store.
Yall Really wanna see somebody at they lowest meanwhile his brand is huge as we speak🤟🏾 keep it up jordan

It used to be good
@Wolf "hypland" with anime references and japanese writing. Every brand in zumiez does this lol.
