- "More than anything, I'm focused on this lineage of work and consistency...that to me is more important than a particular project."
It's November 2017. Off-White is on its way to surpassing Gucci as the hottest label in the world, according to Lyst Index. Virgil will soon be named artistic director of Louis Vuitton menswear.
Following his tragic passing, HYPEBEAST looks back to late 2017 when Virgil Abloh sat down for an introspective interview for issue 20 of HYPEBEAST Magazine.

An absolutely tremendous loss, rest in peace, Virgil.
Big fuckin L man shit crazy
Rip. 28th november is a popular death date for celebrities. David prowse passed away on 28th november 2020 and now virgil passed away yesterday.
+1
He’s not dead he’s hiding. He’s connect to the Harvey case
@RUclips will be the next MySpace soon he was on the list of defendants with Lil wayne and young money on the winestien case
His creative process was so innovative. He was just simply so cool. Truly sad over all this. Rest In Peace Virgil.
@TUbIuyola wtf are u talking about
Always admired how hard this man works. The dedication to his craft and drive he had even tho he was at the top already. Long Live Virgil
Rest in peace to this legend. As others say he walked so many could run. He disrupted creative medium one after the other and will leave a legacy that will long outlast many of the fads of our generation that tried to imitate him.
Rip to Virgil a true legend changed the game forever
What did he do that changed the game? Just curious.
By stealing everything he could lay his eyes on
You kids obviously don’t know anything about streetwear, fashion, designer, and art
The world lost a real one... RIP Virgil, a true visionary.
Wow really explain his vision
im thankful for the impact he’s made not just in fashion but creation and ideas. he’s my generations basquiat. virgil’s name & legacy will forever live on.
He created nothing and stole everything
@@DoFeedThePigeons well he did a pretty damn good job
@Tito talks critically about music your inability to see their parallels reflects your lack of intensive research and understanding of a true renaissant.
@Tito talks critically about music never said abloh is just like basquiat. the same way basquiat evolved the interpretation on art for his era is the same way abloh did for mine. if you disagree, that’s cool. i’m just don’t think a large percentage of people in art culture would stand with you on that. good day mate.

These reseller sky rocketing the price not even 24 hours after Virgil passed away. Like it's so bullshit. This is why I don't go for resell cause of people like those who just sees sneakers as a business instead of art.
If you wanna appreciate someone's art in a sneaker just go for replicas instead of these people who don't care about the art
Fuck bro it hurt when I read the annoucement yesterday
I hope people can appreciate the artists that still bringing the change to the world. We already lost such a genius. Learn to be grateful, at some point we don’t need to agree, but at least we understand. Less hate more love. RIP Virgil
Changed the whole game and opened mad opportunities for us upcoming designers , R.I.P Virgil
@TUbIuyola don’t act like you don’t know designers get inspiration from other artists sometimes and put their sauce in
nah fr tho he is my biggest inspiration as a designer
he's gone through war without us knowing, rip v 🙏🏽
RIP a true leader and legend. If you were around the era of his uprising you know how painful the news was to hear..
Still hasn’t hit me, crazy. Unbelievable. RIP Virgil🕊
Remember he said he loves replicas
Rest in power abloh
One of my biggest inspirations just gone.
Thanks Virg for everything. Your legacy will live forever

A BIG BUNGALOW LOST Rip Ghanaian king 🤦🏾♂️🕊️🤍
We will miss you but your art will last forever Rip Virgil
Nothing but respect for Virgil, but all he said was "Let's talk about how to copy the same thing over and over again but pretend like it's new".
Game-changer mind, what a huge loss ... rest in paradise King!
RIP 🪦 “ⓥirgil Ablöh”
Virgil was a legend, thank god that his genious mind was recognized and valued while he was alive and will still speak to the world cause his legacy is forever.
RIP
It’s just a shame that people paid more attention to the words of Kanye than Virgil only because of Kanye’s antics. I never knew this man had this much to say because everything was always about how Kanye was Picasso and black people choose to be slaves, etc
rip to trashy designs. lv needs to be class again
love this. rest in peace!
Rest In Peace Virgil Abloh !!! 🕊 what a loss 💔
We lost a cultural commodity.
Abloh's really inspired me to start downvoting everything I like and disliking everything I upvote. I made a copy of my ego and act through that in an obliquely detatched way. I buy most of my clothes from a thriftstore and throw them in the trash with the tags still on, and that functions as my work and overall mission statement. I stare into the trashcan as my cameraman films me and the trash, and I tell people I'm a Genocide Artist. That's the basis for my first film. I work under an alias for the most part for safety reasons. Somedays I'm an Artesian Craftsmoker by title, and on those days all I do is criticise Balenciaga online. It's capitulation because it's done with reverse-psychology as a primary motive. People hate me and they hate my opinion, so it lends credence to the brand when I talk sh*t on it. This drives the competitors sales and hastens the apocalypse.I started making money producing nothing. I'm a Puerto-Rican Jewish American, and I call myself an anti-Semite white man. My name is also steeped in irony as a result. My Boricua name is concealed, and I don't use my minority status whatsoever for any advantage. You might think all of this is a joke, but it's not. I opened an art gallery in the middle of nowhere Pennsylvania and abandoned it on the one year anniversary. I discovered Virgil Abloh two years ago from Griselda. At that time I was already trying to build my brand with little to no resources, and had nothing to show for it besides concepts mockups.
This is the first year I've cleared six figures. My brand (which is a secret name) is in the black after the first full year. Virgil woke me up to working in a counterintuitive manner and now I catch all the big fish. Film director David Lynch paved the way to cross over to the otherside and reel in all the said fish I want. This does come at a cost. I'm wildly successful and no one knows because that's part of the deal. I can say whatever I want and no one will ever believe me, and I still don't even own a vehicle so I appear to be an unemployed lunatic. I actually have to confess these things regularly, which is also part of the deal. If nothing is working for you, then do it. In the other dimension that I was sorted out of by the Mandela Effect, I'm still poor because I'm trying too hard to force life. On this side I'm not trying, so I'm reaping life force.
I'm not going to say that this world isn't real and that everything ended in 2012. You should keep working hard if you want to succeed. Take note: If you're accepted by this world and you find your place in this world, that is your only reward. Don't listen to any successful creator, actor, musician, etc. They've all made a deal and everything just works for them. There's no reason for Hypebeast products to sell the way they do. That's the point. Dystopia. Start thinking like it and you'll get what you put in. Have you noticed anything particularly odd about Mississippi? Signs, symbols, and percieved values are the key. What is the weight of data? As data moves faster, the process amplifies the small amount of lost photons. They're all there for the taking. What makes a thing conscious? No intelligence is artificial. "Why?" is the only question you should stop asking. An algorthim is working harder than you are to alter your path at this very moment. Detach and connect.
Virgil is inspiring. @PeakingIndo is a small batch manufacturing group owned by two brothers living in Indonesia. Each piece is uniquely designed by our skilled javanese artisans.
RIP Virgil never bought off-white or anything but was still a huge inspiration to the culture regardless
Rest in piss
There’s a Ted talk talking about why things remain fresh. I remember him saying the word MIYA.
Part of the culture of today is taking what we currently know and transforming it into something new but still familiar. You have to understand where the culture lies today and how you can spark ⚡️ new ideas. We are all part of our own collective consciousness, where that be rap music, freedom, artistic expression, abortion, politics, design and so much more. As an optimist, I can choose to optimistically change the current culture, or I can use rebellion as an opposite approach but still change the current culture.
Rest in paradise to a goat 🤞🏼🙏🏼
My heart🤧....RIP Virgil 💫
“CHECKDIFIT” will take up where Virgil left off and bring a new meaning to street wear a more essential function. The idea is to make clothing more beneficial to human life while bringing modern creativity and swag to one’s fit clothing is more than just for covering ones privates, looking stylish, identifying cultural identity or giving someone high hierarchy status in society. It should have beneficial properties to make human life easier.

people may shit on this man for his "quotations" but you cannot lie on how much he has impacted street wear and changed the GAME
Huge fuckin impact man even Pyrex Virg was impactful he gave that gear to Rocky in Pe$o the way he had his hands in A LOT
Some could criticize virgil for not taking risks but he knew his demographic well. He showed many glimpses that he could make amazing clothing
