Minors are always escorted to the plane by an airline employee and when the plane lands they are taken to a lounge area and that's where a parent or an assigned relative has to pick them up. This girl was not considered a minor.
She has Autism. Depending where she falls on the spectrum she doesn't have the capacity for any of this and something needs supportive care. That's why they had her on a direct flight.
She may have had meds at school and since it was supposed to be a short flight to Boston they probably planned for her to travel without it & just get it once she arrived at school…maybe she attends a school for special needs students…idk about the phone & I wonder why they couldn’t get her an unaccompanied minor designation or similar designation for the trip … but sometimes when you’re raising a special needs child things you do may not make sense to anyone else…I don’t think we’ll ever know all the whys but I’m beyond relieved they found her safe…

She did have a companion clearly you've never purchased an unaccompanied minor ticket the flight attendant watches them on the plane then they are supposed to be transported by company staff to the connecting flight but unaccompanied minors are supposed to fly nonstop which is what her parents got her so it's really the airline not the parents also depending on what her medication is exactly she may not be able to take it herself flight attendants do not administer medication and a 2-4 hour nonstop flight does not mean you need to have your medication on you especially if you only take it once a day

A minor is taken to a special area of the Atlanta airport (all airports) where the assigned relative has to show ID before they can pick them up.

You can see that her parents are elderly and may not know about airtags. She should have had a cellphone though for emergenciea. She must have propably traveled alone before and had no issues so her parents did not think of extra precautions. I don't where she is on the spectrum but she could have just been top scared to ask for directions in a crowded airport as most people with autism struggle with social interaction. The also struggle with change so the concept of a connecting flight woukd have totally confused her.

Everyone needs to realize at a certain age, it used to be 12, kids can fly alone. Between 13-17 I flew all over the US. Once I had my own State ID at 14 I didn't need an adult to check me in even. After 12 I never needed an unaccompanied minor ticket.
This case was different though. I assume you neither are autistic nor need mental health medication. Also, she was booked onto a flight originally intended to be non-stop from point A to point B. Instead, they rerouted her flight to point C for a transfer at one of the busiest airline hubs in the country. You probably have enough maturity to seek guidance or follow the airport terminal signage to make such a transfer successfully but an autistic teen doesn’t have your skills necessarily to figure that out. She probably left the airport thinking she had arrived at her intended destination city.
