When you're up that high in the register, it will be incredibly hard to hold pitch transitioning between the two (even for professionals), and it will be slightly drawn out. Instead Wilkinson opted to insert a vocal break to shorten that closing and add to the dramatics. @@jamescopeland8050 Any way you try to explain it, it's obvious it wasn't done perfectly and Colm probably knows this too. It felt a little screechy at the end, and probably could've been done better.
@@kenf333 - It's definitely a stylisation, though perhaps not to everybody's taste. The same way that he choose to go straight into a sustained vibrato from the first count, rather than holding a single tone and then gradually falling into a vibrato near the end. It all adds to the dramatics of the piece - but it's all intentional nevertheless. Does it sound slightly hoarse? Yes, but what he is doing is very demanding and for the most part he holds a perfect pitch which is usually where most people struggle when they're right up there in their mix register. Quickly applying a lot more breath while loosening the lock on the vocal chords is what is allowing him to make that vocal break, but it's a decision he made to shorten it.

I love both him and Alfie Boe, but I think I prefer Colm's more Broadway pronunciation, because Alfie has that very "opera" style when singing and it comes off a bit too structured for Valjean imo.
