- Who am I? Who am I? 24601! Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean is just BRILLIANT! Do you think that Hugh Jackman kept up with one of the greatest musicals of all time? What do you think about his vocal skills? Is Hugh Jackman actually a good singer?
DID YOU KNOW that the June Rebellion took place between June 5-6 in 1832? And to celebrate its anniversary, this week on Screen Bites it is going to be full of ''music of a people who will not be slaves again!''
Les Misérables (2012) SYNOPSIS: After 19 years as a prisoner, Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) is freed by Javert (Russell Crowe), the officer in charge of the prison workforce. Valjean promptly breaks parole but later uses money from stolen silver to reinvent himself as a mayor and factory owner. Javert vows to bring Valjean back to prison. Eight years later, Valjean becomes the guardian of a child named Cosette after her mother's (Anne Hathaway) death, but Javert's relentless pursuit means that peace will be a long time coming.

"If I speak, I am condemned. If I stay silent, I am damned." This was brilliant!
It's actually "If I speak, THEY are condemned..."
mine is better
@XVeganDaveGodFreeX in the musical its "I am condemned"

WHO AM I?
"My soul belongs to God, I know. I made that bond a long ago. He gave me hope when hope was gone, He gave me strength to journey on... WHO AM I?!?!?! WHO AM I? I'M JEAN VALJEAN!" Such strong lines OMG... chills!
("my soul belongs to God I know, I made that *Bargain* long ago" 😉)
In French, these are the lines:
"If my soul belongs to God alone,
And none can claim it as their own,
If this is a trial God sent me,
Then it is decided for me.
What to do? There's nothing to do!
I am Jean Valjean!
Here is the truth at last, Javert,
An innocent was tried in my stead!
Who am I? 24601!"
24601!!!
The whole moral struggle, and then the way Jackman BELTS OUT "24601" is absolutely stunning.
Beautiful!!!
This scene is literally more than 4 chapters in the book
Isn’t it three times the size of the Bible?
Wouldn't that be 5 chapters?
@@samuelbarber6177 yeah. Les miserables has 1,462 while the Bible has around 1200. But les miserables has 655,478 words in the original, while the Bible has 783,136- 807,307 words( depending on the version). So yes it’s a bigger book page wise but has less words.
If you read the novel by full chapters (every book in the five volumes has at least six or seven chapters with the exception of the one titled Javert Derailed, which depicts his suicide), then yes, it does take up four chapters. Actually it takes up five if you count the one where Valjean confesses.
No
I like the actor playing the false Valjean. His part is so so brief, but he completely sells the idea entirely, he has almost the same look that Jackman had in the beginning of the film, what Javert would have remembered him looking like.
It’s the same actor
@@Dara.308 talking about the guy in the courtroom who they think is valjean
@@OldCouches ah okay, you’re sctuslly right
In the novel, the man was named Champmathieu.
“Who am I? I’m Jean Valjean” maybe the most powerful words in the whole story.
Tony Stark takes notes from Les Mis 🤣
@@mcsawyer because Tony Stark learns from other performers
Hugh Jackman's singing is not as good as the originals. But goddam the way he delivers the lyrics is really passionate. His acting in this is amazing
@Noah Veatch
Dude, seriously...sure he’s not as talented vocally as Alfie Boe or someone like that. That said, his depiction of the internal struggle that Valjean is going through at this moment is absolutely flawless. It’s really beautiful.
The whole show is like that, it is good on an acting level, not so good on a musical level.
Well they also had them sing live so they had to keep doing retake after retake. Vocal fatigue is real, especially for demanding songs such as these. That's the problem with doing a film version with a director who DOESN'T ACTUALLY UNDERSTAND the ins and outs of musical performance. You should hear Hugh in Oklahoma!... he's quite good. :)
It’s prob cause he went on a water fast for multiple days before the recording like a dumbass
Nah, believe me, it's so tiring to become a mutant after leading a circus.
Don't get me wrong, vocals wise i'm sure there have been better, but acting-wise - he 100% sold the lyrics. That little break in his singing with the "How can I ever face myself again" was brilliant.
“And so your honor you see it’s true… this man bares no more guilt then you….” Love this line.
This was a solid vocal performance. Hooper converted untold numbers of people into Les Mis fans, imperfect as the singing was. And the raw quality suits the narrative well, unlike a polished prerecording
Then he directed cats
But here’s the thing about that. Cats sucked to begin with. So I personally never expected much from that movie adaptation.
Les Mis is one of the greatest stories ever told. So each version brings something different to the table.
The novel version is literally one of the hallmarks of world literature. The numerous stage adaptations, but specifically the Claude-Michel Schonberg compositions, etc. bring a whole new perspective to the story. And this film adaptation, while it has its flaws, also gives a face to the tale and the musical. I love it.
@@calebhaber7256 He *inherited* Cats. That movie was doomed from the start.
yes!
Tom Hooper's direction was one of the worst aspects of the movie. A lot of the credit is undue. The production value was the real star of the movie
2:26-2:30 is 1 of many earth shattering moments from this film, and y im so happy it was made into a movie. The camera zoom, the hair, costume, lighting, courtroom, the drama...it captures so much that can't be included in a stage production. Hugh Jackman delivers.
This was made into a movie before this ...
This is actually the second movie of Les Miserables
I will forever be disappointed that they didn’t have him confess to Javert though
“My soul belongs to God I know I made that bargain Long ago..” that one hits hard
“He gave me hope when hope was gone. He gave me strength to journey on” hits even harder
Thank you for this comment. And the one that followed
This truly defines the character. He may be a criminal but he is a man of morals and ethics. He's faced with a terrible catch 22; as he says, if he stays silent, his soul is damned but if he confesses to being Jean Valjean, he's condemned. He violates every promise that he made to God if he chooses to let another man suffer in his place. Jackman does a fantastic job in conveying this moral dilemma.
I know it sounds corny, but this man...Jean Valjean, is a man's man! Even tho', at the beginning of this, he is excited at the prospect of his freedom, there was never any doubt what decision he was going to make. His whole journey is filled with self sacrifice, strength, courage, etc etc. Hugh Jackman was well cast and did a fantastic job
The look of confusion but relief on the innocent man’s face….love the little details
I like the symbolism in this scene. Jean had an opportunity to flee, and take the "easy" way out. Yet, he chose to walk down that aisle, "straight and narrow", to do what was right.
And the candles almost look like wings on his shoulders.
He gave me hope when hope was gone
He gave me strength to journey on
I appreciate how Hugh Jackman develops this song from speaking to singing. In a way the more melodious his voice becomes the more he reaches a decision and acts upon it. So yes there might be versions that are more agreeable to listen to, but I like the approach....
That is an excellent observation which you expressed beautifully.

A beautiful song of internal struggle and redemption. Thank you for posting it, and thanks to Hugh Jackman for an incredible performance.
Great stuff from Hugh, who always gives an honest performance.
This is an example of true courage that stems from a commitment to honesty to God and self. That is more powerful than the powers that govern the world today and yet God offers it so freely. Thank you whoever shared this clip.
Such a powerful vocal performance from Hugh Jack, he literally hits all of the right notes! 🎶🎤
Not really, it sounds more like talking than singing. I’ve got the sheet music in front of me and his pitch isn’t matching the 16th notes.
This was by far one of Jackman's weakest vocal performances, largely because they did long days of takes, so by the time they finished, the actor's voices were all knackered and verging on permanently damaged. If you listen to recordings of Hugh singing, such as in Oklahoma, and compare it to the Les Mis film, he's so much more solid in those. He is a very good singer, but this film definitely isn't him at his best, not to mention they had to move the key of several of his solo numbers down so that he could sing them, he's more of a high baritone than a tenor, if he was a proper tenor then he's be able to reach the top B at the end of this song, same in Valjean's Soliloquy.
Sorry but he was a horrible valjean.
He literally doesn't though
Hugh is one of the legends!
When he confessed, he really was a saint, he even carried his daughter's lover from the barrier
Watching this in February 2025; stilled astonished and amazed with Hugh Jackman's acting and voice, performing what a real man is...thank you, thank you, thank you ❤
Valjean: That man bears no more guilt than you!
Judge: So guilty then?
Valjean: *w H a T !?*
lawl
Ha!
French version:
He thinks that man is me,
This could be my chance,
I have nothing to do
Other than to remain silent.
But I have struggled for so much
Built and invented everything,
Only to give it up to a stray remorse.
If I stay silent, I am damned
And if I speak, I am condemned
And all those workers who work in the factory
And who believe in me. Can I abandon them?
I would be sending them back to nothing again.
If I stay silent, I am damned.
But if I speak, I am condemned.
What to do? Betray this man damned by error?
Let him fall into the depths of misfortune?
This innocent who bears my face,
Who goes to judgement in my place,
What to do? Refuse to walk back into hell
Because I created my paradise on Earth,
Cross out my past forevermore
And hide in oblivion.
What to do? How can I look in the mirror and see
The face of a man who dared not look back.
My soul belongs to God alone,
And none can claim it as his own
If this is a trial God sent to me,
Then it is already decided for me!
What to do? There is nothing to do!
I am Jean Valjean!
Here is the truth at last, Javert,
An innocent was tried in my stead!
Who am I? 24601!
It's great!!
@@marianthi2003 It's better than Who am I?
That final note delivered like a Nolan Ryan fastball.
This scene is my favorite part of the book, talk about a man battling his own soul.
As a christian, this scene hits the hardest for me in the entire musical.
He could not have made the right decision without his faith, and the rest that he has in God.
And often in my life, I could not have made the morally correct choice without knowing that I am secured in God, whatever the outcome.
He gave me hope when hope was gone.
Amen brotha
I'm glad your faith keeps you right. But you are wrong. One who strives to be moral would make the right choice regardless of religion. No good and honest man would let another take their fall.
@@user-bo3mp8un6c You are kind of right. The trouble is, no one is good or honest. To be good is not just to do good, but to love good for it's own sake, not for personal gain or to make yourself feel nice inside. People have no earthly reason to sacrifice themselves solely for the benefit of others. Plus, in a godless world, who's to say what "moral" is? Jean Valjean tries to convince himself that the right thing to do would be to stay out of it for the sake of his workers, but deep down he knows that God wants him to be honest and does it for Him.
2:02 The way he says these lines and the smile on his face conveys that he knows he has the strength to endure prison again, which is what he would rather do at this point then allow an innocent to suffer in his place. All of this because he knows he's not alone. He has God in his life.
I have a theory...... If you pause Les Mis at any moment Hugh Jackman is on the screen, he'll look like he's in pain.
Simply impressed. Jean Valjeant is one of my best book character, he nailed it!
Without Javert present, he must have looked a right fruitcake barging in like that and yelling "24601!" 🤣
i cry listening this, always
It definitely is moments like this where you have to decide who you are
If I apeak I am condemned, If I stay silent, I am damned. - NYC, 6/3/2021
HUGH JACKMANS PERFORMANCE IN LES MISÉRABLES WAS AMAZING👏👏🔥
"Better that 10 guilty men are free, than one innocent imprisoned."
That a line from a book?
Sitting here at work and in pops the idea "next time someone asks us who we are let's hit em with the "who am I? 24601!"
I doubt I will do that, but the idea cracked me up
The building of this scene is amazing 👏
Now that's what I call a voice
2017, the Holidays I was watching this clip. I just invited the local Mini-stop cat to come home with me (he had pleaded with me the day before and chased after me when I was on my bike). I knew the first thing I needed to do was get him to a vet. I thought he needed a name. When Hugh said "I'm Jean Valjean" I knew by boy was Cat Valjean. He had a rough time on the street, but he was going to clean up like Hugh! Almost 5 years later (my Valjean was estimated by two vets to be about 5 years old when I got him), Valjean is my sweetheart and handsome boy (maybe a little fat, and he only has 4 teeth left).
keep in mind, jackman went over these songs for literal hours ( as did the rest of the cast ) because of the director. he also went dangerously without water for the first part of the movie. both of these affect the voice greatly and could have seriously did damage to him. if u wanna hear his actual voice listen to him in the great show or anything else hes in.
Beautiful, I too have felt this way about my sins and past mistakes.
Incredible. A good week to remind us of are ethics.

Great voice
Why do I love this so much?
When he was talking to God in the middle part, I got a "TRY NOT TO SING!" suggestion popping up in the upper right corner of the video, but I'm on mobile, so the title got shortened to "TRY NOT TO SIN..."
Oddly appropriate.
Jackman does his best, and acts very (!) well, but Colm Wilkinson in the original Broadway cast recording is head and shoulders above all comers. This is not to denigrate Jackman, but Wilkinson was born for this role. After 35 years, Wilkinson
(to me) is *still* the embodiment of Jean Valjean.
Couldn't agree more.
Just love this song!

Get goosebumps
Valjean doesn't confess with his name but with his prisoner number. In other words, he confesses to being the man, the criminal, that they all remember him as, not the man that he's turned into.
No capmy favorite scene
*Please can we see Hugh Jackman play in The Phantom Of The Opera next? He’d make the perfect Erik/The Phantom!*
I can agree that Hugh did not give his full vocal potential (it is reasonable that his voice was worn out by so many hours of filming and that he was dehydrated, I think it was a serious mistake by the director to record the songs live, especially those of Jean Valjean and Javert who were the ones who sang the most) but there is no doubt that Hugh gave everything with his performance, before seeing this version of Les Mis I saw the one from 1998 and personally I think that this version gives more depth to his characters, you leaves you emotionally destroyed.
In the Live opera versions, this is a B4, It's an A4 here, so it's actually 2 semitones lower.

Anyone know where I can find the video of the German cast of Jean Valjesn where he screams 24601?
Best High Note Is Hugh Jackman
It’s sad knowing innocent people go to jail for crimes they didn’t commit all the time!
"Can I condemn this man to slavery, pretend I do not feel his agony. This innocent who bears my face and goes to judgement in my place"
+ later in the end:
"to love another person is to see the face of God"
=
do we see how we condemn others in our silence, our complicity? can we see our prejudices? our limitation?
Can we have the strength of Jean Valjean who recognizes that innocents are placed into situations that others could get us out of, but we don't because we care more about our own wants.
Would LOVE to debate ABOUT It!
So this is where the song of lobster in a diner came from
