While you're there be sure to follow us :)
you say pictures, as in more than one but there is only one pic. Oh well.
She's really beautiful under sail
Looks like your topping lift is still engaged. If so that's going to cause all sorts of problems with camber and twist in your mainsail and make it really hard to get a good shape, not to mention chafe across your roach every time you tack.
SV Barry Duckworth can you explain that to non sailors like me?
The topping lift is the line that holds the boom up when the sail is not raised. It goes from the end of the boom to the top of the mast. In the videos it looks like it is a tight straight line while they are sailing instead of being eased off a floating back a little.
If it is pulling up on the boom then the sail will not be full engaged in the triangle between the boom and the mast like it naturally should be much of the time. It should come down under its own weight or lift up when the vang (the block and tackle under the boom that pulls it down towards the front of the mast) isn't pulling it down to flatten it, or when the mainsheet & traveler pull the boom either straight down or to the side, depending.)
So if the topping lift is tight, the sail is not going to get flat, even when the vang or mainsheet/traveler are pulling on it in their various directions, depending on what you are trying to do. The only purpose of the topping lift is to keep the boom from falling down onto the deck when the sail isn't raised. It should be loosened off so it is just about flopping around when actually sailing. Some people have solid vangs under their booms that can both pull down and push up. Some of these make it possible to not have a topping lift at all since those solid vangs can hold the boom up when the sail is down.
The fact you guys are in your twenties and making this dream a reality is empowering. thank you for what you do. I appreciate this channel. The dog is also a great companion, barking on point for those crab buoys
I love that you keep a pfd on your dog. Another popular couple lost their dog at sea and it swam a mile to an island. After that they always use a pfd.
2% cutting it close! Happy Birthday Ryan. Feel better Kelsey! Glad you are all ok. Sail on!
That's what oars are for.
The sunset timelapse shot of the lighthouse was just perfect!
Nice lipstick bro :)
HAPPY BIRTHDAY CATCHIN UP WATCHING VIDEO'S
Stones...have had three...last one hit about hour after I got home from a boat trip. Off to hospital...sent home to ride it out; four days later, back to hospital and doc went in and got it...seems it had burrowed itself a nice snug in which to reside. DRINK LOTS OF WATER!
I feel for you! Theres no pain like and no position makes it better! Hope you feel better soon. Great video!
Happy Birthday Ryan, you’re looking more like a salty old sea dog every day! 😀 Kidney stones suck, hope you feel better Kelsey. Glad you guys got the video out this week. Your videos and the weekly flightaware email are like little presents that show up each week! Thank you for the work that you guys do, and I’m not just talking about the teak deck!
happy birthday! nice sail for a present :D hope you feel better and get well soon.
Shells at :45 - horse conch (looks like it has a tail) then a queen conch (these are the pretty pink ones- no tail)
the two shells are bleached out but retain their shapes
I'm actually not a sailor. I live in the mountains of Western North Carolina and paddle a whitewater canoe. She's 8-feet in length and a beam just a bit wider than ya' hips.
Love your story,
I'm from Tampa and a friend turned me on to your channel
11:05 crab pot advance warning system (CPAWS) is functioning well!
Mike Hagen 😆
I was going to comment about that too! Does he bark at anything in the water? If so, that's pretty damn handy.
Mike Hagen that is brilliant. Love the CPAWS Officer.
Enjoy! You worked for it!
Happy Birthday Ryan! Kelsey, hope you're feeling better! Great job Ru! Thanks for sharing. 😍⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵😊👍👍👍👍👍👍
Well done. I hope Kelsy is feeling better. Great video. Thanks for introducing me to that song. I'll be looking for more from DCL.
Hope Kelsey is feeling better. I've never had a kidney stone, but I've known friends and relatives who have and it is nasty bad painful!
Happy Belated Birthday Ryan! Mine was June 24th...the big 55! Hope Kelsey healed up perfectly. Streaming Peace & Love energy to yall. :)
Great vlog guys. Love the content and personalities. Get well Kelsey
Derek Semmence appreciate the support!!
get well soon! how is that torqeedo doing? we are going for torqeedo also on our dingy.
I passed a kidney stone when I was younger, very painful, so I know the pain that Kelsey is going through !
So sorry for your first mate having to go through an attack of kidney stones. I seem to grow them every 6 to 8 years and it is the absolutely worse pain I have ever experienced! My last episode was so bad they had to put me through a Lithotrypsie (sp) machine and break up the stone by bombarding it with sound waves. Luckily I had a morphine drip to keep ahead of the pain involved. Peeing through that screen really is the only way to catch it but what a pain that is! The dog was obviously having sympathetic pain for you and was very attentive! Hope by this time it is nothing more than a bad memory. Love your videos!!
oh man those stones are so bad. i have had one in my life and it woke me from a dead sleep. i had no idea what was going on but i was getting sick and passing out from the pain passed out twice calling for help that evil thing came out with some meat -_- never been put into ER that fast in my life after they took BP
I know how you feel I've had issues with kidney stones on multiple occasions. They are awful and can actually be worse then childbirth.
Man the only thing that concerns me about that outboard is the squeal it make gives me the feeling a bearing is about to explode somewhere.
Well done picking up the plastic. Some guys never learn!
Noticed your main sheet tackle is quite twisted. You might be able to stop that from happening. There is usually a small set screw that will stop the block from swiveling. See if that helps.
Bummer bout the stones ....
I saw the picture on Instagram and was wondering how you got it. That's so cool that he offered the picture exchange. Roo is doing a great job with the buoy. Glad y'all made it in before the kidney stone climax. I think it would've pretty much sucked if y'all were in the middle of your passage. Well, hope things are better. Fair seas to y'all
And a very happy birthday.
Michael DeNicola thanks!!
Put a life jacket on your dog and a tracking collar like they use on hunting dogs. If it decides go after SOMETHING or just falls overboard and you could see. It's hard to recover underway with even a small amount of chop. I knew some people that lost their dogs in Elliot bay that way.
Kidney Stones .. I have had them.. and I have been told it ranks up with childbirth in pain. So guys .. give your woman credit ... it bloody well hurts.
Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) juice made from flowers breaks up calcium oxalate into dihydrate that can pass in urine. Some citrus fruits also help, like oranges or grapefruit where citrate is accompanied by a potassium ion.
Glad your safe!
Why have you not fitted your windvane back on? You love sailing and that is the best way to go, no power needed and once you get the hang of it you will love it.
Brave girl. kidney stones are the worst pain ever. Like pissing dull razor blades through a salt water filled wound. once you get them you will never let yourself get dehydrated again.
Now that you're back to the States you should check out some filters for your GoPro for enhancing your underwater work.
it's on the list!
100% agree kidney stones are the absolute worst! Glad your better.
You two make wish I was young again.
A couple of things... No auto helm? How do you recharge the dinghy motor (I may be forgetting an episode on this...)? KEEP THE STONE!! (make a necklace out of it or something) haha! (Wait! Maybe on a ring?? Women LOVE rings!). I don't give good advice, BTW...
They recharge it with a cycler on either side of the dinghy ... oh wait, this isnt the cup, nvm.
Do you have to plan to be on shore for the puppy to do her business,,,, or is she trained to use a spot on the boat.
Kidney stones suck
I have had several before
Drinking acidic drinks like lemonaid and orange juice help to break them up and keeps them from forming
Hope you pass it soon and feeling better.
Was watching your sails and your windex and you guys can really head upwind well in that German Frers designed Hallberg-Rassy. Our old Rasmus doesn't do so well upwind like that. We'd be pinching pretty badly and crabbing to leeward with a lot of leeway unless it was very light winds and we could keep heeling to a minimum. Still, you got smoked by that ketch on the same tack...two sailboats going the same direction = race.
I have had several kidney stones over the years. Had to have one removed surgically. The surgery and recovery was horrible ! Hopefully you passed it ? Worse pain in the world, for sure !
... long time subscriber, first time caller.. Quick question ?
Do you follow, Bumbs on A boat ? Excellent adventures..
When that stone hits the porcelain you will be soooo relieved at the sound of it you'll want to fish it out and at least take a good look. They are gnarly looking suckers.
Awesome channel. Keep up the good work. 👍👍👍
But please please please untwist your main sheets. Its been buggin me last few episodes and im sure its harder to use like it is. If there is a swivel on either end take it out. Anyway just me being slightly ocd😳🤪🤯 about ropes and there use.
I'd forgotten about that awful Torqeedo squeal at high throttle... reminds me why I sold mine! They're a great idea that I really wanted to love but that just ended up disappointing. Hope you're still enjoying yours :)
Yew! Love the video. Stay safe
I had a 4mm kidney stone a couple months ago and was the worst pain I ever had!!! I screened for it for over a week and all I got was flakes and sand like particles.. So it either broke up or its still in my bladder. Needless to say now I drink cranberry juice every day and lots of water..
I feel your pain. I've been unfortunate, in that I've had SEVERAL kidney stones. They are never pleasant. Best wishes on passing it quickly! You don't want to have doctors have to get it out. That REALLY sucks. Trust me.
Ryan and Kelsi, next time you do a reveal episode about expenses, do you mind specifically “insurance” expenses, especially where insuring international passage. Do you have the ship fully insured, just basic dock liability? If full insurance, did you have to get a survey done once your refit was complete? Just curious. Thanks.
By the way, Kelsi. Apple Cider vinegar will help break up the stones. Just a capful daily is all you need. ;-)
Richard Ravarino talking about US health insurance can be a sticky subject because people politicize so much on YT. As for intl passages, we don’t plan on carrying any intl or travel health insurance. We’ve learned from other series and our own research that medical care outside the us is typically on par with the states and drastically cheaper. Sailing Uma had some procedures done in Mexico and I believe Sailing Zingaro as well. Both had a great experience. As for the ship, she’s fully insured. We will probably always carry hull insurance as well as liability. We had an in-water insurance survey ($400) done while living aboard in St. Pete. We’d recommend not doing what we did and always getting an out of the water pre-purchase survey. It won’t limit your options to just a few carriers as it has us due to ours being an in water survey. Hope these answers help and thanks for your support!!
Apple cider vinegar is good to prevent them too. Have to use the kind with mother, mutter, whatever. I squeeze a lime in the water too. It takes some getting used to but has multiple good health benefits. My kidney stone occurred just before getting married. Morphine did not phase it but God bless the person who invented dilaudid.
Sorry to hear about the kidney stone. Painful. I have had four separate sessions with kidney stones. Rated as one of the most painful experiences you san experience. Hopefully no more in your future.
I love that the pup barks at the crab pots! That’s how I feel about them. It’s a minefield out there :(
Ouch! Kidney stones are no joke. I've passed one, and it took two doses of morphine. Don't attempt the filter; it's much easier to catch it in a large container, then filter it out... IF so inclined. Love your videos, though. Keep them coming, and fair winds to you!
woot woot, happy belated birthday bro, get well soon captain beautiful great video guys :-)
Always the first crew!
Just love your dedication to old style sailing and feeling and wanting to be with mother nature ...it shows not all young people believe in the system sell ...loved every video ...watched them all tonight ....like a great book you can't put down 😊😊...keep true to you .
Happy Bday Ryan! Lookslike the gray hair has been creeping up on ya in the last year! Lol. Hope Kelsey is doing better now
Hotrod Hog had the greys since 18! Well, they’re really white not necessarily grey. As long as I have hair I’m good haha. Every guy in my family went bald by 25.
Hey BTW, I call mine silver hair because it's worth more than gray LOL. Have a good one
it's called highlights or frosting & costs extra @ the salon ;-')
In German, it is called the Metal Age(s): silver in your hair, gold in your teeth, titanium in your hip, and lead in your ass (the last idiom means it takes you forever to get your ass in gear)
Your outboard sounds like it needs new bearings
Ughh.. Kidney stones are brutal. Had one when I was 20... couldn't pass it and had to have it surgically removed. I'll spare you the gruesome details. Fortunately it was another 30 years before I got another... just a few months ago. Luckily I was able to pass that one. I feel your pain Kelsey... litereally. Hope you pass / passed it quickly! -Donnie
Those are lobster pots, or (crawfish pots) either way they are pain in the butt pots!!!
Your a beautiful and tough young lady Kelsey !! All the best to you !!
It's all the vocal fry that brought you bad luck.
Stupid question Kelsey, how did you know that ks was the problem and not, say, a burst appendix. (Honest question...I’ve never had either)
At first, I (Ryan) guessed kidney stones because I've had a friend go through them and saw my uncle firsthand have them. But a trip to an urgent care plus a CT scan confirmed my incredibly unqualified diagnosis haha. Didn't film the trip to the urgent care which sucks for the story but we have no desire to have the camera on us 24.7
I have had eight (8) 12:57 Since 1972 😩😳🤭
And Five (5) in the summer of 2005 😢🥵👎. But none since then
I found/figured out every time I had been drinking a Lot of Gaitor-Aid before
Them... Never ever drank Anymore, And NO more kidney stones 🤓😎👍✅
back in 73 woke up in terrible pain finally passed it the next day peeing in a gauze covered pitcher
2% ? Crikey!
I’d be trading that loud thing for a gas powered outboard.
Clickbait title
Enjoying this videos. Just caught up. You said you were planning coming across to the UK to visit a friend. I assume you will also visit the boat's last owner, Jim? Whereabouts in Scotland was he from? He sounded local to me. I would recommend the west coast of Scotland as a great cruising area, if colder than what you are experiencing there.
I'm 64, and had my first kidney stone about a month ago in Saigon. I actually had three stones, as shown by the ultrasound. It was very painful, and the French doctor who was treating me at the clinic stated that, passing a kidney stone was more painful than child birth. He saved me with a shot of 10 mg of morphine. His recommendation was, drink more water, a lot of it, especially in a hot humid climate! I've always been a fan of consuming water, but it still wasn't enough!
How is the Rassy going astern? I have a Gulfstar 41, an almost similar hull. Gotta say, my boat is a real bitch backing up. :). She is all over the place going astern. Good video’s!
People- there is more than one type of kidney stone. Your nephrologist or primary care Doc can suggest ways to minimize your specific type of stone (save your stone for analysis). Home remedies may or may not work- depending on a lot of factors. Love your adventures, by the way. Thx.
Have subscribed to you all's channel for a while but just now got caught up. Great work! Thanks. What size was old Luci and what size is Lucidity?
You have to watch kidney stones there are so many reasons why they happen. I had one, and it was likely from not staying hydrated. Mine was a about half the size of a number two pencil eraser head and shaped like a rock and a rusty red color. That is why I know what it was all about. If yours is one of the spikey ones then there is a completely different problem. It is important to keep it long enough to tell what the issue might be. You might have like a million in you from some issue, and not know it, if there is no follow up. There are things you can eat and drink which works to break them down. I like limeaid, it will grow hair and your chest, wrinkle your nose, and dissolve kidney stones! Well...one of those things is likely more useful than the others.....
Best wishes for getting rid of that stone quickly and as painlessly as possible. And that there should not be any more! On a different subject, what software are you using on the iPad for navigation? Looks very nice!
Are you two ready to sell your Hallberg Rassy, built on Orust Island in Bohuslän, Sweden ?
Can't imagine passing a stone while sailing. I had one last summer and it was tiny and kicked my butt. thank god for Morphine... tough girl!!!
Ouch. Can’t help with kidney stones but, a good remedy and relief for Portuguese Man of War is Accent Meat Tenderizer or Pee.
I had a kidney stone. Can't imagine anything worse. I feel for you. Doctor told me to drink lots of water with lemon juice to prevent future stones. I had surgery to remove it. No fun!
I had stones several times and is horrible. The last time was in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean when I was crossing it. Luckily passed it in 4 or 6 hours and then was over and I enjoyed the whole experience even more.
What a good doggie! What a great lookout! Can you train Kola & Sprite? LOL! WTG!
Yikes a stone, btdt -- not what "Abandon Comfort" is supposed to imply, gedda beddah.
an electric outboard! Really. Let me guess they think they are good stewards of the environment by having an electric motor. Pretty dumb to have an electric motor out in the ocean. Give me a good Mercury any day.
A well prepared kidney stoner knows to keep pescription pain meds on hand at all times ! By the time you give up and go to the hospital get diagnosed and given something for the pain the worst is over and you are out a lot of $$$$ Same thing happened to me , jumped off the boat onto the dock and ouch ! soon afterwards I thought I was going to die !
Sorry about the kidney Stones I used to get them all the time , the Pain was extreme .
I understand the life style you picked but I have to say that getting back to your boat with %2 of battery left is extremely dangerous . The size motor is a toy . I know this video is a year ago I just hope you have learned that sometimes you have to get what you need and then more . If you need a five horse power you get a ten . I really Pray you don't have to learn the hard way because out at sea you don't get a second chance .
Another great video, sorry you were in such pain. Thanks for sharing. Safe Sailing
Michael DeNicola a hard lesson on hydration! Thanks for the support and positivity 🙂
What did I tell you!
Cleaning up the beach...nice work!
I’m with ya on the kidney stones. Passed a few in my time. The first one and my last one were the worst pain I’ve ever been in and I broke my back 13 years ago.
Nice episode. Glad k-dog is doing ok. Beast mode on the stones girl!
Well done on the clean up! Leave it better than you found it. I still can't handle the squealing motor on the dinghy though.
Have done the ‘stone thing’. My sympathies and now.nobody ups you on pain in that regards!! This too shall pass
Abandon Comfort is having kidney stones, right? No comfort in that experience.
Please, go to the Dominican Republic or Costa Rica instead of Cuba! Cuba is a BAD idea!
Keep the stones. Send them in to a Doc. that specializes in kidney stones. They can help you avoid them in the future.
Hi guys, how do you put up with that horrible high pitched motor? I’m sure it must be a worn bearing or something as others don’t seem to be so noisy.
Nice to see you both cleaning up the beaches of all the plastic litter. I do the same thing when I am at the beach. It is hard to believe so many people litter these beautiful places.
Love your videos AC! Have fun, stay safe and enjoy life! Wish I could join ya'll on the seas, yet here I remain an overland traveler. Happy birthday!
Luke's Trucking Life overland has its perks! As long as your living your adventure that’s all that matters 🙂 thanks for the support & positivity!
Wow, I'm a little star struck that you three (cant forget Roo) actually responded to me! Thank you for taking the time to read my and all your other fans comments. I really appreciate it!
Luke's Trucking Life of course! We love talking with our crew and hearing about everyone’s adventure plans. It is the only reason we continue to share our journey 🙂
Great Video! I hope Kelsey is ok by now. I have never had a kidney stone, but a friend of mine went through it and he was hurting something awful. I assume you have paddles in that dingy just in case you run short on battery power. You definitely cut it close on that trip.
dspid2404 always bring the oars! We want to set the porta bote up to be a sailing dinghy as well at some point. Thanks for the support!! 🙂
After viewing the video a second time I realized you used the paddles, so stupid question. Sorry. Didn't notice it. Must be really nice having the fort to yourselves. Did you have to be off the fort island at closing, if there is one or was it open all the time?
Good on you on bottle pickup. The world appreciates!
Feel better, also very impressed with your dingy motor,
