In addition to annual costs, we cover the cost per hour and cost per mile to operate. We also cover key performance stats so you know what you're paying for.
Costs of airplane ownership vary widely from owner to owner. This video takes an average of the various expenses from existing owners and boils them down to simple to digest numbers. Your ownership experiences will be unique. Авто/Мото
holy hell the 340/414 commentary is insanely accurate. Loads of Cessna twins on the market for less than the cost of a Cherokee Six. Oh, sure, you've got two TSIO520s that need to be overhauled, and a leak somewhere in the cabin pressurization system, and steam gauges from the 70s, but you get a twin. Mmmm.
I fly an RV-10 my wife and I built, which is about as un-Colty as planes get, but always find your walkarounds delightful.
Thanks Dan, and congrats on the RV10, that's quite an accomplishment
“It looks like it’s a set of tundra tires away from having its own RUclips channel” hahaha. That’s an underappreciated line 😂
Would love one of these on an entry level warbird (T-6 Texan or Harvard equivalent, PT-13 stearman, etc). Surprisingly easy to get into with a license and a couple quick endorsements
Yes, do a T-6!
Yes, T-6 is long overdue.
Heyyy, doesn't surprise me to see you here
Honestly it's kinda impressive when you say the Colt is nowhere close to being a bush plane, but then you see Pacers with not that much of a different airframe being used for landing in the bush. One I'm working on even has STOL competition markings on the tires.
A friend just bought one of these a month or two ago for 10k USD! Had a fresh annual, plenty of hours left on the airframe and motor, he got an amazing deal.
I owned a Colt for 8 years and put about 800 hours on it, I bought a Bonanza which I still own 37 years ago, I had a Cessna C-140 for 30 years as well, the Colt was always a better plane than the 140 , more power, faster, comfortable, much less drafty and quieter, I’m ready to go back to a short winged Piper, I always enjoyed flying the Colt.
My first few hours as a beginning student in 1965 (Corpus Christi International) was in a Piper Colt and I loved it. Comments like, "it's like flying a brick" never bothered me, I was having way too much fun and at a price I could afford. Soon graduating to a Piper 140 Cherokee, but I always preferred the high-wing Colt, I know, I know, but it's a matter of personal preference and that's that! The only draw back to the Colt was noise, but wearing a headset helps eliminate that problem. Love the little Piper Colt! Wish I had one!
LOL "it definitely flies best when the engine is running"
I would love to see a video on the Ballanca Super Viking or the Citabria please
Keep up the good work 🫡
Just saw one for sale in my area for $15k. Good timing with the video.
"Al" brought me here. No interest in buying a Piper, or any aircraft, but enjoyed the commentary. Thank you!
"It definitely flies best when the engine is running." The fact that this distinction needs to be made is hilarious. lol
Could you do a sailplane at some point? Would be interesting to see how it compares to powered flight
I hope so eventually
I owned a 1961 colt years ago, fun little plane too fly, great time builder.
Love the content. Thank you!
Wow, Thanks again man. You just made my day. I'm glad you like the video 😀 ✈
LOVE YOUR CHANNEL !!
Even for any other vehicle !
👍👍👍
Great looking little aircraft too!
This is my favourite RUclips channel. So oddly satisfying!
0:53 Glide ratio is bleak, defiantly flies best when the engine is running
It would be cool to see a comparison between the piper pacer and Stinson 108!
Lets talk about that useful load. That seems enormous for a 2 place airplane with an 18 gallon fuel tank. 36 gallons with long range. That leaves around 450 lbs of useful load with full LONG range tanks. This would make a pretty good weekend getaway for two if they dont want to travel far.
Hooray! 😁
Good show! A quibble: the Clipper has room, if not payload, for four.
Yess
I wonder how it would compare to a ch77...
Maybe you should do a video on that :)
It's so cute o.o
this channel is gonnna help me buy a plane.
I had a Colt for about 7 years, put about 700 hours on it, great airplanes.
Can you do a Cost to Own on a Rallye 180 Commodore? Is there much performance difference between the Colt and the Rallye 180?
Will we be getting a video on the t-6 Texan, t-28 Trojan or t-34 mentor?
Yes
The old flying bar stool. Shes not a looker but seems decent enough.
Would you say something like a pacer or louscombe is a similar cost to operate?
Very similar
Could you do the maule mx7 or mxt7?
Take the costs from this video and double them, triple the insurance if tailwheel (quadruple+ if low TW time).
But I would still like to see him make a Maule video because I like the commentary.
Gyro please!
I love my Vegabond, Costs as much to run as a.snowmobile...but better.
Cost to own a space shuttle?
Please do a Sonex b!
I did 😀. All my videos alphabetically are here: completewalkaround.com/video-library ✈
seru sekali bosku
Wait is tipping your a&p a thing?
It sure won't hurt. Actually as of late we are happy if customers even pay.
Ya we have had a couple of deadbeats.
So this needs much more runway than say a j3 cub?
Yeah, a cruise prop, six feet less wing, and wider cabin make this one struggle on hot days. But it’ll still out run a J3 and you can solo from either seat!
@@WilliamWhitneyChristmasMD ok cool thanks! I want to become a pilot and this may be one to look into!
It’s a great first airplane! Can confirm!
@@WilliamWhitneyChristmasMD cool! I do want to as a taildragger. I’ll can’t wait lol
😬 Maybe not a good first taildragger. Short Wings are pretty squirrelly compared to others. Tailwheel insurance isn’t great and I’ve got plenty of experience. A nosewheel will help you cross the finish line to your license faster and cheaper, then you can graduate to taildraggers.
What are the odds a non-tiny size human can fit in it? I've found most planes I can budget I'm too big for lol
Pretty good vertically, like most high wing airplanes with struts (struts usually means no spar through the cabin). The same as a 172 for shoulders room.
I have one and I'm a fat boy. If you follow a specific procedure it's not too hard to get in and out and once you're in, it's pretty comfy.
I’m 6’2” and about 180lbs, fit in my Tri Pacer just fine. Same cabin dimensions as the Colt
just a suggestion, slow down with the narration. The presentation will be vastly improved.
you might call it a .. colt classic
My least favorite thing about pipers, no door on the left side
So when you said the channel will buy an airplane, were you thinking of this one?
Its in the right price range. I haven't forgotten about the channel plane. Lots of preparation going on
$174 / hour? Cheap? Cheaper to fly a Cessna 172
Where?
Your buying perpetual debt. Get another hobby.
It's funny you picked the cheapest airplane of all my videos to make that comment
I flew back years ago. Had 3 planes over the years.. Gas was 1.60 80 octane. Oil was cheap. Annual was $100.00 cash ELT batteries were a ripoff, and little stuff ate up money, tires, brakes Etc. Looking at your charts with all the expenses 100 hours at over $11.000 Are you really going to pay that? no way is it worth it. I bought my first plane for 6000 dollars. I flew several times a week. never had any engine or airframe problems. Remember once your machine developes any problem, even just a simple tune up, they gotcha! I had a ragwing cessna my first machine. Taildragger. Got in it, the seller sat beside me and I three pointed it on the grass several times and I was good to go. Never had any close calls. After a couple weeks started landing on cement runways. A bit tricky but got real good, used to land in 10/20 mph crosswinds. Scary at time luckily never wrecked or had close calls. Im old now and have moved on, Good luck. @@CompleteWalkaround
My dad had a 63 colt for years, was tons of fun.
